The Hogsmill river, a six-milelong tributary of the River Thames, rises from springs in Ewell Borough and is classified as a rare chalk stream. It provides a natural purification system as the water is initially filtered and cleansed through chalk, making it an ideal habitat for wildlife. However, the intersection of the A3 road with the river has disrupted its greenery and caused pollution.

During the summer of 2021, I was given the exciting opportunity to build a 1:20 scale model of a house renovation for artist Peter Dogi. The project was commissionedbyTakeshiHayatsu, who had been my studio tutor during my 4th year of studying architecture. The main purpose of the model was to conveydesigndecisionstoPeterandhis family, and to help them visualize the proposedrenovation.
The existing house was an old, derelict structure that had previously belonged to another well-known artist. The upper floors presented a particularly interesting challenge, as the previous owner had introduced arbitrary columns to support the roof. Therefore, the placement of these columns needed to be carefully considered in ordertodeterminethedesigndirection ofthisfloor.
COMMISSIONED BYHayatsu architects
The model I built was designed to display the relationship between the old roofing support and the new bridge. This bridge was designed as a playful element, and since the entire floor was intended for Peter's children, it would provide height and additional storagespace.
Throughout the process, I worked closely with Takeshi to ensure that every detail of the model accurately represented the proposed renovation. The end result was a visually stunning and informative model that successfully conveyed the design decisions to Peter and his family. This project not only allowed me to showcase my architectural skills, but also provided valuable experience in communicating complex designs throughmodels.

After completing my bachelor's degreeandfacingdifficultyinfinding employment, I decided to take on a project to occupy my time. This led metocreatea1:20scalemodelroom diorama, which placed heavy emphasis on capturing the essence of life within the space. The diorama depicted a simple room and was loosely based on the works of Studio Ghibli, who had greatly inspired my pursuitofarchitecture.
This project not only served as a creative outlet but also helped me discover new methods of modelmaking, which I was able to bring into my master's degree studies. Through this model, I gained an understanding of the key role of furniturein architecture.
INSPIRED BYJapanese Hanabira workshop
I learned how furniture can give architecture character and personality, andhowthewayitages canprovideidentity.
As I progressed in my studies, I was able to apply the insights gained from this project to my future work in architecture. It allowed me to exploreandexperimentwithvarious designconcepts, whichenrichedmy understanding of how furniture and other elements can enhance the overalldesignofaspace.
In summary, the room diorama I created after my bachelor's degree was a pivotal project that not only helped me past time, but also opened up new avenues of learning and exploration in my pursuit of architecture.
