Detroit, cold, and hard as seen from an outsider. But what most do not know is Detroit is a city on the rebound, positive change everywhere one may look. The paths represent the emotional journey I experienced while traveling through Downtown. The paths are all curved with no hard angles, acting as a more open minded view of Detroit. The base shows the distinct districts of Downtown, the elevation represents the amount of attention given to a specific area, the highest being the riverfront, and the lowest being the western half. Detroit is a forever changing city, a very dynamic city that has many secrets and hidden treasures, and with a new perspective on Downtown, everyone can experience those.

Exploring A Void

Space is sacred, I wanted to create a space where young and old, the sick and healthy can interact in a safe, protected space. The spaces reach out in both directions pulling each audience to the space, also wrapping over the building to bring each abandoned space into one place.

Weaving was used to create a coherent whole. The weaving used was intricate, tedious, was used to bring two abandoned spaces together and to fill a void

Located on the street, but almost seems like they are found in a hole. Ignored and walked around in the daily hustle and bustle. Used and abused then left for the next user. Their purpose and meaning often lost in the world. They are forgotten about and seem lost, but this does not mean they do not have a story. Their story, the basis of their abandonment, time and money gone, unfortunately lost, no longer provided and life slowly slips away. Abandonment simply put: forgotten about, deserted, and given up on. Are these objects belonging somewhere? Dwelling: safe, sacred, solitary place to escape from the real world’s use and

I came across a half used book of matches I began thinking, what do matches, much less fire, do for us. Fire lights our world, provides fuel and power, warmth and comfort. I decided to explore the last two. Fire to me has always been sitting around a roaring fire with my dad up north. We can both just sit there, no talking, no movement, no awkwardness, and we feel completely at peace with ourselves. We are removed from the everyday world, whether we choose to think about the challenges we face or not, fire still brings a sense of calm and peace. With the structure, I created a path lined with fire leading up to the space of reflection located on the roof. I chose to go on the roof to incorporate more than fire, I wanted to include the night sky, and the downtown skyline. The space includes two separate areas, one creates a “fire from the downtown skyline, and on the opposite side an actual fire, to warm our bodies, heart and soul.

12x12 Urban Dwelling For A Musician

13

With the 12x12 urban dwelling, I wanted to express every part of Corktown that I believe makes it what it is and has been for over 100 years. From the history, nature, residents, they all play an integral role in keeping Corktown alive and thriving. A fiddler was chosen to pay homage to the history in

Each side of the clay block has its own meaning. 2 sides work with each other to push and pull, showing the hard work the residents put into the area and the positive that is the result. Another side shows the abundant nature present, other side shows the historic nature of the area and one side brings in Steven Holl’s idea of designing with light

Acoustic Arena

Acoustics shape this world. They affect lives in many unexpected ways. An acoustic arena is a space that captures the sounds created by the environment and puts them in a showcase for others to experience.

Acoustic Arena

The acoustic arena is an exhibition of sound. A place where local artist can show their work, and the patrons will have a continuously changing experience every time they visit. Sound, light, and media installations all have their own place in the arena.

The sound installation was created to have visitors interact with the art and sound. The noise makers are out of site where the visitors will pull levers to create the noise.

Tuned City

Challenge: Create a plaza, where classical music can be introduced into a new concept. Songs from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons will link the plaza together. Spring Allegro II used as inspiration for the dining portion of the DCMP. Starting with visualizations of the music, I explored different forms based off the different heights created.

By using an installation, I was able to illustrate the different platforms and how I was exploring many different levels in my building. The Installation also helped me understand the song Spring Allegro II

The Trajectory not only played a role in the different levels developing, but also played an integral role in “transforming the exterior and interior spaces.

Transforming Experience

Tuned City

Dining at the DCMP is a new concept, blending classical music and fine dining; all under one roof. This space will create a transforming experience for all of its patrons, through the song by Vivaldi. The song is very loud, quick, upbeat and can be considered the finale of spring, and the transformation of the earth into the next season.

The DCMP as a whole will be a new entertainment venue in Downtown Detroit. The undulating plaza is an expression of the group’s trajectories and the multiple levels we all incorporated into our buildings.
