COMMUNITY SUPPORT

SAYS IT ALL

We feel deep gratitude for the support we are given from you, our stakeholders. As we stabilize our business postpandemic, we are consistently excited about the level of engagement from our community. Great ticket sales, solid donorship, steady event revenue, and a growing list of tenants are proof that the services we provide matter to our community.

We continue our conversations with the City of Roanoke focused on a sustainable capital maintenance plan. We remain hopeful that these discussions will elicit a sturdy and responsible solution to ensure continuation of our mission. We know that the City and our community value what Jefferson Center provides and this is our moment to concretize terms of a better plan. Your support furthers the message to the City of Roanoke that our community values our efforts.

As you will see in this report, we are differentiated by the breadth of our mission. We have our own diverse programming of course and we also support hundreds of other events annually. We provide leasing space to small

businesses, both for-profit and not-for-profit. We impact academic outcomes through our unique education program. So, whether you’re here to be inspired by an artist presented by us or you are engaging in the work done by other community partners, Jefferson Center is facilitating that experience.

Our historic building has played a key role in the lives of so many. We continue to entertain and educate as a center for culture in Southwest Virginia. With your belief in our mission, our trajectory is only up. We will keep you up to date as we reach our potential to do good.

A MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR 5

PERFORMANCE SEASON: 2022 - 2023

A RECORD BREAKING SEASON

Jefferson Center would like to thank our patrons for a record-breaking year of attendance!

Our season began with a spirited set in Fostek Hall by Shaun Martin, a member of the well-loved jazz ensemble Snarky Puppy. It was a homecoming of sorts as we began our 20222023 programming and welcomed his return. The first show of our Jazz Series, Javon Jackson with Nikki Giovanni, was an incredibly special evening that drew a diverse crowd of all ages. Many students stayed after the show to meet Nikki, have books of her poetry signed, and take pictures with her. As a nationally renowned poet who taught at Virginia Tech, she is a local treasure. Before the show, we held a reception with the local nonprofit Soul Sessions. Six of their most talented poets performed, and Nikki spoke briefly about her experiences as a writer and professor.

We kicked off the Star City Series with Punch Brothers, who played to a full house in Shaftman Performance Hall on October 12. Morgan Wade sold out the hall again on November 17. As a native of the area, fans have witnessed her career explode over the last few years as she was signed to Sony Music and gained representation through WME. It was truly an air of celebration as family, friends, longtime fans, and patrons who recently discovered her music packed the venue.

Immanuel Wilkins drew a great crowd for his Jazz Club performance on October 1, and Lenny Marcus sold out his CD Release Show on October 15. Godwin Louis Quintet’s Jazz Club performance on November 4 featured a Masterclass for students before doors opened to the public. The focus of their time together was to walk the students through the audition process and help prepare them for next steps after graduation.

The third quarter was our best yet! We sold out Shaftman Performance Hall for Shawn Colvin, Marc Cohn, and Sarah Jarosz Together in Concert on February 17, as well as Lyle Lovett on March 7, and Croce Plays Croce on March 30. All 3 shows embodied exceptional songwriting with an Americana flair. The evenings ended with standing ovations and impressive encores. Neko Case packed Shaftman Performance Hall on January 29, attracting 671 attendees with her unique contralto, over half of which were first-time Jefferson Center patrons.

Our Jazz offerings drew wonderful crowds as well, with Fred Hersch & Esperanza Spalding performing together on January 31, and Branford Marsalis returning with his quartet on March 9. Several students attended these shows, including 61 Hidden Valley High School students. It was refreshing to see so many young faces appreciating live Jazz in Shaftman Performance Hall.

We also sold out Fostek Hall for a Jazz Club performance by Goldings, Bernstein, Stewart Trio on January 28, as well as an evening with Folk legend Loudon Wainwright III on March 19.

Along with our usual performance spaces, we got creative and utilized the stage in Shaftman Performance Hall for an intimate performance by Violet Bell on January 13, during which the audience was invited to sit onstage.

Jefferson Center’s 2022-2023 Season ended with a bang! Father John Misty sold out Shaftman Performance Hall on April 17 and wowed the audience with his stunning vocal range and immersive light show. Fans ranging from teenagers to seniors cheered for an encore, with a staggering 80% experiencing Jefferson Center for the first time. On April 19, we welcomed Monterey Jazz Festival On

Tour to celebrate one of the world’s most long running and iconic events. The stage was filled with critically acclaimed artists and led by Tony, Grammy, and NEA Jazz Award winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Powerhouse vocalists Ruben Studdard and Clay Aiken took the stage on May 5 for Ruben & Clay: Twenty the Tour, celebrating 20 years of music and providing a fitting finale for our Shaftman Hall shows of the season. Our final performance was Camille Thurman for our Jazz Club series. Guests enjoyed light refreshments and the relaxed black box atmosphere while listening to a rising star with multiple talents (tenor sax, bass clarinet, and highly inventive vocals to name a few.) She was backed by the Darrell Green Quartet, who provided drums, upright bass, piano, and guitar. Ending the season on such a high note had us excited for what was to come for Jefferson Center in 2023-2024!

BARS, BEATS &

MASTERCLASSES

Throughout the fall and spring semesters, the Music Lab offered classes on Bars & Beats (hip-hop 101), songwriting, and music production. The students celebrated a year of hard work with an end of year performance in Fostek Hall.

The Student Performance Bands also had a public show at Martin’s Restaurant on May 13 with over 75 people in attendance. Six students were involved in 4 bands and performed their own songs and covers from groups like The Ramones, Fleetwood Mac, and Foo Fighters.

In addition, the Music Lab’s Gospel Band traveled and performed at the Quality of Life Festival at the RFK Festival Grounds in Washington, D.C. as part of a celebration of Black History Month.

Alongside the regular Music Lab curriculum, Jefferson Center offered a masterclass with saxophonist, composer, and Berklee College of Music educator Godwin Louis. During the masterclass, several students were invited to play with Godwin Louis and his band. Once they finished playing, Mr. Louis and his bandmates gave the students professional critiques about how to express themselves through their music and create a presence on stage when practicing and auditioning. This class was followed by two Jazz Club performances by Mr. Louis in Fostek Hall.

On February 28, Sammy Miller & The Congregation performed an interactive morning assembly for 150 local high school students in Shaftman Performance Hall. They delved into the sound of a young trumpeter Louis Armstrong moving to Chicago, the composer Duke Ellington moving to New York, as well as the concepts of improvisation, swing, and blues. That evening, they played a free show in Shaftman Performance Hall for 570 community members. Youths and older music lovers alike were uplifted by the energetic tunes and the group’s inviting stage presence.

CAPITAL NEEDS ASSESSMENT SUSTAINING A CITY LANDMARK

As stewards of the Roanoke City owned Jefferson Center building, in 2023 we enlisted Hughes Associates Architects & Engineers to complete a capital needs assessment on the building to give us the information we needed to ensure the building continues to be able to serve our community.

The building has not seen any significant renovations since it was saved from demolition in the 80s and Shaftman Hall was renovated in the 90s.

The assessment found that the building has $6,016,145 in critical needs recommended for remediation within the next five years. Critical items for remediation include architectural and mechanical systems repairs and replacements critical to safety, function and building integrity.

Examples include:

• Architectural repairs to seal up the exterior from water infiltration.

• Interior fixture repairs and improvements such as doors, signage, ceiling surface replacements, restroom repairs, and concessions space improvements.

• Improvements to interior finishes including flooring, plaster and wall repairs, and painting.

• Repairs and replacements to the outdated fire system for safety, including fire panel, smoke evacuation, and sprinkler standpipe systems.

• Replacements of old HVAC units for performance spaces/related support areas, split units in tenant spaces and air handling units on the Fitzpatrick wing.

• Replacing the roofing on the main building as well as the Fitzpatrick wing.

We are grateful to say the work of the capital needs assessment gave us important information we needed to begin conversations with City of Roanoke leadership to find sustainable solutions to make sure Jefferson Center thrives in its future.
