David Driskill ’10 and Erik Lee ’09 walk-on for University of Oklahoma football program. Two recent Casady graduates, Erik Lee ’09 and David Driskell ’10, through hard work, dedication and determination were able to fulfill lifelong dreams of suiting up for the University of Oklahoma football team. Erik Lee just completed his second season as a Sooner football player. David Driskill has enjoyed his first year joining the OU football team roster. “Suiting up and running onto the field for the first time against Florida State University was a special moment for me,” Driskell said. Lee and Driskell were able to experience the excitement of winning the ‘Red River Rivalry’ and the Big XII Championship with the team this year. They will accompany the Sooner squad to the upcoming Fiesta Bowl in Arizona. Lee and Driskill both credit much of their success to Casady Head Football Coach Koby Scoville, Coach Marc Gonzaga, Strength and Conditioning Coach, and the Casady faculty and community. Lee said that attending Casady School made his transition into college very smooth. He has worked hard for two years and says he is not about to be discouraged by the fact that he hasn’t been rewarded for his hard work yet on the field. He learned at Casady that it takes time and patience to reap the fruits of your labor, and he believes that it is just a matter of time before he will be rewarded. He learned that you can do something with hard work and perseverance and you will always prove those people who don’t believe in you to be wrong. “Casady has prepared me in every way possible to put myself in the position that I am in today,” Lee said. Driskill said his first year at OU has been incredible. He also credits Coach Zaga with giving him an advantage in the weight room. Driskill believes that Zaga’s teaching techniques truly gave him an advantage on the field. Coach Scoville said “If you work hard, good things will come to you and people will notice you.” This proved to be true for Driskill. In addition to making it onto the football team, Driskill also has a 3.60 GPA. Lee also credits his success to the Casady faculty and community for providing him with preparation on how to balance academics and maintain a commitment to football. “It’s just a great structure for college in teaching you how to work hard and get things accomplished, which was huge,” he said.

Shanna Schuelein, class of 2011, has signed with Auburn University on a diving scholarship. Schuelein has been ranked nationally, with her highest ranking at 9th in the country. Schuelein also had offers from Stanford University and University of Kansas. She chose Auburn because of their ranking as a top five university diving program. Her mother credits Casady’s athletic and academic programs for Schuelein’s wonderful opportunities. Schuelein will be receiving an academic as well as an athletic scholarship from Auburn. Her mother jokingly said, “Shanna’s yearly tuition including her merit scholarship for college will be cheaper than her tuition from her Primary days at Casady!” She feels their investment in Schuelein’s Casady education was well worth it and has paid off with this wonderful opportunity for her daughter’s college education. In addition to diving, she is a member of Casady’s cross country and cheerleading teams. She maintains a 4.0 GPA and is an active member of the Casady choir program. Her signing with Auburn also marks Casady’s 200th athlete to move on to compete in college athletics. Her diving accomplishments include the following awards: * Three-time High School All-American * Seven-time Junior National Diving Finalist * Two-time Senior National Diving Semifinalist

MAKING A SPLASH Casady School also allows students to compete in rowing off campus as a club sport. Two Casady students will be attending college on scholarships for rowing. Max Blumenthal, class of 2011, will soon be signing his official national letter of intent with University of California at Berkeley. Dale Jordan, class of 2011, is undecided about which scholarship offer to take. His top three choices are Dartmouth, Northeastern and University of San Diego. He is also looking at Boston University and Texas Christian University. Blumenthal and Jordan are both members of the Chesapeake Boathouse Rowing Club. Casady School commends all of these outstanding student athletes both on and off the field. Their success stories inspire other students and also reinforce a strong sense of pride in the Casady School community.

Activities at Casady: Football Basketball Track & Field Cello

Favorite thing about Casady: “I love my teachers here at Casady. They make you work hard and push you to be a better student, and the campus is so pretty. The campus itself is what drew me to Casady.”

Most Challenging Course: “Latin. Getting the verb endings is very difficult and the pace of the class makes it challenging to keep up with. I love it though, because you’re always learning something new and Mrs. Winkle really tries to make it fun for us to grasp.”

Best Part of the Day: “I actually love the breaks we have after Chapel and lunch because it gives you plenty of time to get things done if you need to or to be able to just relax.”

CASADY PARENTS’ ORGANIZATION

The Casady Parents’ Organization is very active on campus. We staff and manage the Casady Cupboard, sell concessions from Jimmy’s Concession Stand at sporting events, and work with the teachers and division directors as grade representatives and homeroom parents. This year we will be involved in many activities on campus beginning with the Back to School Picnic and the Boo Hoo Breakfast for parents of kindergarten and senior students. Bingo Night is held in January and our Fat Tuesday Pancake Breakfast in March this year. Our fundraising efforts provide significant support to the faculty and students. As a Casady parent, you are part of this great organization, and we encourage you to experience the Casady community through volunteer activities at school this year. Have a great year at Casady! Middle Division

Winter festival Has Success In Its First Year Casady’s Middle Division sponsored its first Winter Basketball Festival the second week of December. The threeday festival included 7th and 8th grade boys’ and girls’ teams from Independence Charter Middle School (ICMS), Piedmont Middle School, Oakdale Middle School and Westminster Middle School. It was structured as a round robin format, awarding the championship to the teams with the best record in each division. “The festival was a tremendous success. It was a unique opportunity for the Casady community to watch great basketball, while at the same time maintaining and strengthening relationships with the local schools,” said Curt Foster, Tournament Director. Westminster won the Festival Championship for the 8th grade boys and both the 7th grade boys’ and girls’ teams. Oakdale Rockets were champions for the 8th grade girls.

funDAMENTALS THUNDER TEACHING

Casady School recently hosted two fall camps sponsored by the Oklahoma City

Thunder to help teach fundamentals for basketball. Casady has sponsored multiple

events for the Thunder this year, including Thunder camps during the summer, tryouts for the Thunder Storm Chasers, and the signing of Kevin Durant’s contract extension. The four-week Mini Dribbler camp for boys and girls in Kindergarten through 3rd grade emphasized the fundamentals of dribbling as well as teamwork, sportsmanship, respect and character building. “The ultimate goal for the camp is for the kids to have fun and to teach them the proper way to dribble the basketball,” said Tyler Blackwell, Camp Director. Rumble also made a surprise appearance at the camp to help teach the dribbling routine that was performed. The mini dribblers concluded their camp by showcasing their dribbling skills in front of fans at the Oklahoma City Thunder vs. Philadelphia 76ers game. The second basketball camp was for boys and girls ages five-16 years old. The sessions focused on fundamentals such as dribbling, passing, shooting and defense.

The sessions incorporated skill building and fun, replicating the “Thunder” atmosphere while the kids were able to refine their basketball skills and also have a great time.
