By creating a series of neighborhood “pocket parks” that are tied together via bike and walking trails as well as kayak and ferry, I propose to create a more equitable park system for the area. Portions of current parks will extend into the Freshkills site, giving residents a view of the beautiful mounds and allowing them to learn about the engineered site. The forever wild sections of the site will be limited by reservation, special occasions, educational programs, events, and theme days. This will keep the flora and fauna that have returned to the site relatively undisturbed and thriving.

In order to create a decentralized urban ecosystem, I chose to design a large pyrolitic kiln that could burn waste construction wood on site. The kiln burns at a high temperature and emits very little carbon dioxide. The resulting charcoal could be used to amend compacted soils in parks as well as in bioswales.

Harlem Stage is located on a tight corner of West Harlem. The theater had problems with residents and their pets walking through their plantings. I created a lush planting plan that would deter people and their pets from walking through the space.

GLASS BLOWING
Work with glass blower to create a custom vessel.
ASSEMBLY
Put the terrarium together (including layers of charcoal, fired clay pellets, sand, and soil). Plant the terrarium and watch over it until all plants are established.
AFTER
Visit the client weekly for two to three months to check on the terrarium and make certain they are comfortable caring for it.
