WELCOME

Hello and welcome to my portfolio. I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, taking my first CAD course in the 9th grade. I have been drawn to architecture and design even sense.

My official educational journey starts at Metropolitan Community College, where I obtained a degree in Architectural Design Technologies and Architectural Documentation. I then transferred to Kansas State to start towards their fiveyear Master of Architecture.

This fall, 2021, I am studying abroad in Orvieto, Italy. I will be visiting many of the sites we have studied in history and taking writing-intensive architecture seminars. Upon my return, I will be starting my 30-week academic internship and complete my Design Research Project. My final year of school at K-State will be at the Kansas City Design Center, an urban response studio. There, I will develop strong ties to the civic community and design professionals while focusing on and promoting design innovation.

Autonomus Innovation Campus

The AIC research lab is where cutting-edge AI and building construction sciences meet. This Facility has researchers and robots working side by side to create new methods to improve the way we produce building elements on and off-site. There is a strong emphasis on how materials or elements are assembled on-site using robotic technologies.

This Facility provides a space for top researchers to develop, prototype, test, and display new AI building technologies.

NOHO ART MUSEUM

The NOHO art museum embodies a simple parti shown in plan and on the facade—subdividing this corner lot separating public and private spaces. The first three floors are open to the public, encouraging the use of the space while creating additional revenue for the museum. These floors are connected with a large atrium. The top three floors require admission and housing 4 different types of art. These galleries are primarily illuminated through skylighing in a double-height space with a mezzanine level inside.

MANHAT TAN FARMER’S MARKE T

The Manhattan KS Farmers Market has existed since 1979 in a parking lot just behind Pointz street, which serves as the main street of the historic downtown area.

This farmers market doubles as an open plaza with protected areas for the vendors to sell while also providing a multiuse public space. The market is occupying a portion of the site allowing plenty of parking for the main street businesses. It is essential to cater to all the vendors’ unique needs, so various stalls are provided. This allows vendors to carry in goods or sell directly out of a vehicle, trailer, or food truck.

ABSORPTION

We studied, analyzed, and modeled different stairs on campus and created a set of design rules using “ing” descriptors. My design focuses on blending and absorbing. Blending relates to how spaces interact and connect. There is a blending of natural light and artificial lighting. The lighting conditions in each space relate to the activities occurring in them. Absorbing relates to the moments created that encourage the occupants to stop and sit. Enjoy the view outside or watching activities of others in the space. There is an integrated bookshelf/ bench at the main landing. It is to create interactions between occupants. For example, you are sitting there, and someone wants a book under you, it encourages people to interact with each other in the space.

Digital Exploration This project was also my first attempt at using VR in designing a project and the final presentation.

It allows for one to develop a clear sense of the scale of the project. The critic liked the experiential aspect of the presentation.

I enjoy experimenting with new programs and technology. Since this project, I have taken a Digital Visual Special Effects in Architecture seminar, which piqued my interest in utilizing cinematography to convey projects. Using video over VR makes for a clean and impactful presentation.

Environmentl Design

The first year of my eduication at K-State was a hands on learning environment utilizing an abstract approach building an understanding of the core design principles. Exposing me to all of the different design majors before choosing a path.

Featured is my artist refuge project, Surinity, from the first year. A 500sf structure providing a flexible studio space for an artist of any type.

We went on many field trips. The next page features field sketches and a study of the Bachman Willson House.

CAPS TONE S TUDIO MCC NEB

The Capstone Studio is a collaborative project at my community college where students from all trades come together and build a house each year in a controlled lab. The challenge is the building must fit through a garage door. The solution is a modular design and an overhead gantry crane. The modules are taken to a site and placed on an ICF foundation then joined to a garage built on site.

My responsibility on this team was product knowledge. We are constantly pushing the envelope, ensuring future builders are familiar with the newest/ most innovative products on the market.

Currently, I am studying abroad in Orvieto, Italy.

This experience has turned out to be unlike any before. There are only nine students here when typically there are 30-55. So it is just five faculty members and us nine students. Because of this, our travels and workshops conducted with the locals have been very personal and engaging.

Additionally, many popular destinations have been practically empty from visitors, as you can with me standing in St Peters Square on a beautiful Saturday morning with few people in sight.

Immersing myself in a different culture has been eye-opening. Our seminar courses are also exciting, finally focusing on our senses and the neurological perception of space and place.

In just three weeks, Professor Coats has helped us reimagine how we can approach design utilizing his ideas of Deep Beauty in architecture with writing to describe the places we inhabit and are designing.
