I have just heard from a Mr Brian Holman of Leeds, Yorkshire.

He is anxious to contact any dependents or relatives of a George Golder who was born in Kingsdown well over 100 years ago.

George was the Master of a coastal steamer called the William Hope which floundered off the coast of Aberdeenshire.

They are celebrating the bravery of some of the locals involved in the rescue attempt. If you can help, please Phone Mr Brian Holmans on 01274 560.

A group of school staff were invited to participate in the audience of The One Show. The programme featured a show called Taskmaster the source of inspiration for some of the activities we use on our annual Thinking Day. As an accredited Thinking School we love to get the children thinking and problem solving in fun ways to enrich their learning experiences.

Kingsdown and Ringwould CoE to received UK ‘National Nurturing Schools Award’ from national charity On the 16th May 2019, Kingsdown and Ringwould Church of England Primary School received the ‘National Nurturing Schools Award’.

This prestigious accolade is awarded to schools who demonstrate exemplary practice in embedding a nurturing culture Rose Cope throughout their school, enhancing teaching and learning by focusing on the emotional needs of children and development across the whole-school.

The National Nurturing Schools Award is awarded to schools who successfully complete the National Nurturing Schools Programme. This is a two -year programme to develop and embed a nurturing culture throughout the school.

Speaking of the Award presentation, Head of School Mrs Cope, said: "Our school holds the well-being of our children at its heart. The Annual General Meeting of the Ringwould with Kingsdown Parish Council took place on Monday 13th May followed by the Ordinary Meeting.

Cllr Clark welcomed everyone to the meeting and then reflected on the recent passing of Cllr David Bucknell and a minute silence of remembrance was held by all in attendance.

Cllr Siddans proposed Cllr Wilson as the new Chair, this was seconded by both Cllrs Eddy and Deschamps, and the motion was carried, Cllr Deschamps proposed Cllr Siddans as Vice Chair, this was seconded by Cllr Wilson and all voted in favour.

It was agreed that Cllr Wilson will remain the Ringwould Village Hall Representative and Cllr Siddans the Kingsdown Village Hall representative.

At the ordinary meeting of the Council members of the public addressed the Council regarding the Kingsdown Toilets and the recent news article. The chair explained to members of the public that the Parish Council had not contacted the Mercury to publish a story, that this had been initiated by a member of the public and that the Parish Council do not own the toilets and were only asking residents for their opinion on whether the Council should continue contributing to the maintenance costs of opening and closing the toilets in the summer months.

Cllr Wilson has been liaising with the Ringwould Allotment Committee and things are moving forward.

Cllr Eddy will be liaising with the Kingsdown Conservation Group and the Kent Wildlife Trust regarding the Freedown Tree Management Plan.

Sarah Gleave will be joining Ingrid Dodd and Valeria Trewartha as the third voluntary Tree Warden within the Parish.

There have been many recent issues regarding Freedown Wood and anti-social behaviour. If you are using these woods, please clean up after yourselves, do not use illegal substances and remember air rifles are not permitted in this vicinity. These woods are for all to enjoy so please respect the area. If you see anything suspicious please dial 101, or if you see any criminal activity taking place dial 999.

Cllr Siddans is still looking for volunteers for Speed Watch, please contact the Clerk if you are interested.

The newly elected Parish Council are already working hard on Parish projects, but there are still seats available on the Council for Co-Option, so if you feel you have attributes that will benefit the Parish Council, please contact the Clerk on the above details for a ‘chat.’ The next meeting of the Parish Council takes place at Kingsdown Village Hall on Monday 10th June 2019, all residents are welcome to attend.

Starting a new garden, I am particularly intrigued, if not a little anxious, to find out if some of the new perennials have made it through the winter.

One of the early plantings I made was of Salvias, which fitted in with the style of the garden and with the growing conditions. The majority have survived and are coming out; some are early, these are the small flowered ones such as ‘Hot Lips’, which is red, and lovely white ‘Moonlight Serenade’. ‘Royal Bumble’ and ’Peter Vidgeon’ seem to be next, finally the glorious ‘Salvia Amistad’ with blue flowers. I think Amistad will be the tallest above a metre but the others are shorter. These will continue to flower well into October.

Incidentally, I usually buy my plants from the offers made in magazines, or from the RHS. I like garden centres but try to avoid fully grown plants because of the expense so May and June are the best time to visit, and grab the half grown perennials.

Salvias go particularly well with roses, apparently their aromatic smell keeps the roses free of fungal diseases and prevents the need for spraying. I am certainly going to try under planting, when I get mine!

This year we have decided to combine our AGM with our annual social to which we hope to invite all the newcomers to the village.

It will be on Monday 15th July 2019 at the Kings Head. Having delivered on some of the Green Ideas that arose from last year’s competition, we are interested in knowing what projects members would like to see delivered next. So we hope members and interested non-members will want to come along and contribute to the meeting and enjoy the social. We only have five members on our committee at the moment and really need a few more people to help. So if you are interested in nature and in looking after our beautiful village, please get in touch.

Pop-Up Cafe and Information Hub The first visit of the Pop-Up Cafe and Hub to Ripple took place at Ripple Village Hall on Monday, 20th May. The visits will continue during the months of June to October. This is a free event organised by Action with Communities in Rural Kent. All sorts of local information will be available and it will be an opportunity to meet and chat with friends over a cup of tea and a slice of cake. Organ Recital

George Sharman gave another Organ Recital in Ripple Church on 17th May with a programme of ‘More Jolly Organ Music’. The recitals will continue with a concert of organ and cello music on Sunday,16thJune featuring the cellist Hannah Chappell. The recital will commence at 3.00pm. Tickets are priced at £10.

The Church of St. Mary the Virgin (Cornilo Churches) The Spring Bazaar was held in Ripple Village Hall on Saturday, 18th May with the usual attractions. Our thanks go to all those who helped and attended.

From June, the service of Morning Worship held on the first Sunday of each month will now start at 11.15am. This means that all the morning services at Ripple will now start at 11.15am.

Highlights from Parish Council Meeting 9 th May 2019 Election of Officers: The election of officers took place, results as follows, Chairman – Mr Keith Morrison Vice Chair - Mrs Angie Ray Footpaths Officer – Mr Chris Danican Tree Officer – Mr Andy Muir

Traffic Calming: The Parish Council are working on a HIP (Highway Improvement Plan) for the village. One of the measures is to look at what can be done to slow down vehicles on the approach to the village from Crooked S road. KCC carried out a site visit and we are working with them now on what we allowed to do and the costs.

KCC Member - Councillor Manion came along and gave us a brief report. He told the Council that there is additional funding in the budget for road resurfacing and pot-hole repairs Ripplevale School Community Week – Post 16 students will be busy in the community carrying out small repair projects in the village at the end of June.

The next Parish Council meeting is on Thursday 13th June at 7pm in the village hall.

Members of the public are very welcome to attend. Do come along if you have anything you would like to say or share with the Parish council; you can join in during public speaking time. Or you may just like to pop along to find out what is happening in your village and meet your Parish Councillors.

The Arts Society (formerly known as NADFAS)

The Arts Society is both a membership organisation and a national charity which operates through a network of 391 Member Societies with nearly 90,000 members. One such society is the Dover Deal and Sandwich Arts Society which meets at the Sandwich Guildhall at 10.15am on the first Tuesday of each month (except July and August). We are a strong society with over 200 members drawn from the area described. They can listen to prominent speakers on a wide range of subjects, socialise over coffee and meet new likeminded people. Other activities include short breaks and outings to places of historic and artistic interest, such as the Watts Gallery near Guildford and The Pavilion at Brighton.

To meet our charitable objectives we are involved in projects to introduce and support young people in the arts, not just painting but drama, sculpture, and dance to mention a few. We also fund trips to museums and art galleries for schools. We get involved in church recording, and our most recent project produced a detailed report on St. Nicholas Church at Ringwould listing its historical artefacts and links with the local community. The report is now held in the V&A Museum and British Library.

On June 4th the lecture is on The Ash Can School of painting, an artistic movement in the US during the early 20th century portraying scenes of daily life in poor neighbourhoods of New York. On September 3rd the talk is on The Field of the Cloth of Gold.

Notes from the meetings on Tuesday 14th May 2019 held at the Church Hall Studdal

Notes from the AGM Barbara Merriman was elected Chair for the coming term and Graeme Akhurst was elected Vice-chair. The Council welcomed a new member, David Willet. There is still one vacancy as Ron Little and Charles Hogben both decided not to stand again for this term.

Notes from the Ordinary Meeting Defibrillator The Defibrillator has been installed at the Church Hall. Final checks need to be carried out prior to the defibrillator being registered with the emergency services. The Council hope to organise a defibrillator training event for local residents as soon as possible.

Rural Roundup The Treasurer from Rural Roundup attended the meeting to give an insight into the financial position of the local magazine and to request an increased donation from the parish council. The Council were very interested to hear what the treasurer had to say and decided to revisit the topic at their next meeting.

Litter Pick The Chair gave a short report on the recent litter pick. Although there had only been a dozen participants, the litter pick had been very successful with over 40 bags of rubbish collected and taken up to the Whitfield site. Several local residents had already cleared the roads adjacent to their properties. The suggestion was made that this may be the way forward to try and combat the problem, to persuade local residents to 'adopt' the area around their houses and to keep these free from litter.

Review of documents The Council carried out their annual review of documents. It was noted that the Portable Electrical Appliance testing (PAT) needs to be carried out as per the Risk Assessment. Clerk to action.

Planning The planning log is up and running on the website for parishioners to check local applications. The Planning policy is to be discussed again at the June meeting.

Highways The Councillors discussed the Willow Woods Road and Beacon Hill junction as there have been three recent accidents at this site. The Highways log is only showing two minor accidents here in the last few years. Highways to be contacted to bring this to their attention and to ask what can be done.

Highlights from the Meeting of Walmer Parish Council Meeting held on Wednesday, 15th May 2019 at 8 The Strand, Walmer at 7.00 pm Elections: Cllr Mrs Le Chevalier was elected chairman for 2019/20.Cllr James Murray as Vice-Chairman for 2019/20. In the absence of the Chair, Cllr Murray took the chair for this meeting.

Welcome & Introductions: Cllr Murray welcomed everyone and new members Cllrs Eddy, Lonsdale and Symons introduced themselves. The Clerk handed out a sheet outlining very broadly the powers of local councils which she advised everyone to file in the new training packs with which each councillor had been provided.

Members were appointed to the council’s various sub committees and as representatives to outside bodies. A full list will be available on the website, New council administration: The Clerk reported that all councillors, with the exception of Cllr Gardner, had signed their Declarations of Acceptance prior to this meeting.

Members resolved that Cllr Bill Gardner, being absent from this meeting, be granted permission to sign his Declaration of Acceptance no later than 30 May 2019.

Members were invited to examine training possibilities.

Members agreed that committees will be asked to look at their strategic documents and amend them to reflect updated priorities.

Co-option: Members discussed how best to co-opt a fifteenth member an unfilled seat in Lower Walmer (Wellington) Ward and, after discussion, resolved that Dr Alan Bailey be co-opted.

Councillor Surgeries: The next councillor surgery (to which the PCSO will be invited) will be Saturday 1 June. Cllrs Heath and Thompson will attend. All other councillors are welcome. The following surgery will take place on Saturday 6 July. Cllr B Pitcher and one other will attend.

Planning Committee resolved to co-opt Mr Richard Styles to the Planning Committee in the new post of Conservation Warden.

Report of the clerk Members received and considered two emails from local residents concerning a local art installation and resolved that, since the council has no legislative power to intervene on private matters, the Clerk will write to the residents informing them that the artist is an approachable person who may well be able to explain more about the exhibit Private motion: Members received and considered a proposal from Cllr Thompson in which he suggests changing the signage at the Drill Field to reflect the fact that the sports facilities are open for all to use. He also suggests that the sign on Cornwall Road is ill-placed and needs resiting and that all signage throughout the site ought to be uniform. Members resolved to refer the proposal to the Amenity & Environment Committee for closer scrutiny.

Walmer News & Events The Parish Council offices were full for the Annual Parish Meeting of Walmer Parish Council at which the council delivers a ‘state of the nation’ report to its rate-payers Among those attending were newly elected councillors, and winners of council grants over the last year.

One of the conditions which the council imposes on those it gives cash to is that they report back to tell everyone how the money was spent.

There were a wide variety of interesting reports ranging from funds to support local air cadets, who have built a flying simulator to teach cadets the rudiments of flying in the shell of a Robin Reliant car, to support for the legal campaign being fought to save the Goodwin Sands from further excavation and funds for tennis court markings which are already generating high quality tennis players.

Star of the evening was Roy Stone who was awarded the Kent Association of Local Councils award for local people who have demonstrated an outstanding contribution to their Parish. Walmer News & Events We thought you might be interested to know a little of what goes on behind the scenes at the Walmer Parish Council Annual May Brocante which is attended every year by a growing number of visitors and for which every stall is booked long in advance.

The work is done by two groups: The Events Committee, led by Councillor Mrs Marguerite Beard-Gould, sorts out all the practical details such as how many stalls, where visitors can park and, perhaps the most vital of all, where the Porta-loos should be situated.

The second group is the office staff led by Parish Clerk Kirsty Holroyd who take all the bookings from stallholders, make sure that all the equipment such as Porta-loos, posters and ground marking paint are ordered and make sure that local people know the date.

Both groups come together a day or two before the event to double check last minute details and then mark out the areas where vehicles and stalls will be parked in the different size plots, small and medium cars and large vans or vehicles with trailers.

The really hard work begins at five o’clock on the morning of the Brocante when a dozen volunteer councillors and staff arrive at Walmer Green to welcome stallholders and show them where to park.

This takes about three hours and then the volunteers visit every stall to make sure that everything is in order.

By now hundreds of bargain hunting customers are arriving and another nine volunteers - many of them the same people who arrived at five – supervise the visitors’ car parking and set up the popular antiques valuation operation in the memorial bandstand.

Customers continue to arrive and depart all day and the volunteers are kept busy ensuring that everyone can park without blocking others in until about four o’clock when customers have mostly left carrying with them hundreds of bargains and the stallholders begin to pack up and head for home and a well earned rest.

But for the Councillors and other volunteers there is still work to be done and a dozen or so people can be seen marching up and down Walmer Green collecting litter so that the site will be left pristine for the enjoyment of local residents.

All in all a successful day – but for Walmer’s Councillors and office staff a long and busy one. Now it’s time for Marguerite and her team to start planning for next year’s Brocante.

Walmer Lifeboats Walmer lifeboat volunteers battled through rain showers, strong winds and hail storms to wash a record 144 vehicles and raised £1,315.39p.

A special presentation was made to two Walmer lifeboat volunteers following the car wash. Dawn Whitbread and Ann Austin were awarded the RNLI’s Excellence in Volunteering Awards. The certificates noted Mrs Whitbread’s efforts in the Walmer shop and launching and running the Institution’s Betty’s Pots fundraising scheme which has so far netted over £2000 since its launch ten weeks ago.

Mrs Austin’s award celebrated her work in the Lifeboat shop and her initiative in organising new fundraising events such as the Bangers and Mash and Ploughman’s lunches and building engagement within the local community.

After returning from exercise on April 21 Walmer crew aboard D Class Duggie Rodbard II relaunched to rescue two people and a dog in danger of being cut off by incoming tide at Ness Point near St Margaret’s Bay.

We would always recommend coastal walkers to check tide times before setting off to avoid the risk of being cut off by incoming tides.

New conservation warden for Walmer Walmer Parish Council has appointed a conservation warden who will help preserve the nature and character of Walmer by working with theCouncil’s planning committee to inspect planning applications in conservation areas.

Mr Richard Styles, who stepped down as a parish councillor at the last election, and is the Town Clerk of Ramsgate and who lives in Walmer, has accepted the post.

He told Rural Roundup: “Walmer is a wonderful place to live and I am delighted to have been offered this opportunity to help preserve its unique character.”

Remembrance Service

There was an unexpected special moment during the evensong service at St. Mary’s to mark the 100th anniversary of the departure of the last RAF plane from Walmer Aerodrome at Hawkshill and the closure of the field.

As the bugle of Mark Spratt, Royal Marines [retired] sounded and the final note of the Last Post floated up into the high ceiling to begin the one minute’s silence to remember those fallen in war, a baby began to cry.

At first members of the congregation were a little startled but then it seemed as if, somehow, the child was crying for all those who had made the ultimate sacrifice so that this baby could be born into a free country.

After precisely a minute the child stopped crying at the exact moment that the bugler began to play Reveille.

The moving service, led by Canon Seth Cooper and Canon [Squadron Leader] John Clapson of the RAF, included readings by the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Admiral of the Fleet Lord Boyce and the County President of the Royal British Legion Leyland Ridings and was attended by around 100 people.

Marguerite Beard-Gould The Walmer Sports Spectacular which will be held at the Rugby ground in Canada Rd., Walmer on Saturday June 22nd will be opened by Kingsdown golfer Robert Paul, one of the world’s leading golfers in the category of one armed golf and, until recently, the world champion.

Robert, a Kingsdown resident and member of the Walmer and Kingsdown olf club, will be able to offer golf tips. Tips from someone who despite using only one arm is still better than most golfers including those with both arms in Europe.

There will be over 20 other sports for visitors to try for themselves free and without obligation and opportunities to join local clubs.
