Committed to Earth-friendly product content and environmentally responsible manufacturing practices Maroma, our principal’s home in Auroville, India, was founded over 40 years ago on a once barren plateau that has since been transformed into a lush green region where a vital young city is progressively taking shape. Auroville is an international community dedicated to human unity and the advancement of society in a fair and non-sectarian fashion. The community now extends over 100 settlements inhabited by people from India and 30 other countries. The residents are involved in a wide range of projects including environmental regeneration research, organic farming, renewable energy, green construction technology, handicrafts and small eco-friendly industries. These activities have become a major source of fair trade employment for the surrounding villages. Aurovillians also work closely with these villages to improve their infrastructure, educational programs, and health care facilities. Maroma employs only adults (mostly women) from the local villages. To encourage schooling, Maroma ensures that prospective employees have completed their education before they are hired. Due to fair annual pay increases, salaries are generally higher than the local standard. Benefits include a safe and pleasant work atmosphere, reasonable hours, health care facilities, hygiene programs, and savings plans. Positions at Maroma are much sought after by the area’s residents and employees tend to stay with the company for many years. Maroma is the largest employer in Auroville and the biggest contributor. Each year, 40% of Maroma’s profits are returned to the community to further growth and development.
Maroma’s commitment to eco-friendly products & production practices Maroma’s office and manufacturing facilities are located in India, which is one of the most beautiful but densely populated countries in the world. As a consequence, there is a particular sensitivity to environmental issues and a dedication to help preserve the planet’s natural resources. The ingredients in Maroma’s products are naturally abundant or taken from renewable sources, and packaging is recyclable. Auroville is one of the first cities to completely offset its electricity usage by feeding into the grid wind-generated energy from captive power windmills installed by the Auroville unit Varuna. To further this conservation effort, Maroma also generates about 35% of its total required energy from its own solar panels. Waste is greatly minimized through recycling, and only materials with the least impact on the environment are chosen for packaging. Fragrances are constituted with natural essential oils. However, some synthetic-based fragrances may be used to help preserve natural or non-renewable resources. Of course, products are never tested on animals.
