“The idea of the tower is something that speaks to the concept of seeing out — being up, seeing out, further. And the guarding tower is the apex of sight, extended in all directions, seeing further than before. That momentary curiosity bespeaks the word: tower.”
The most lonely, and the most powerful architectural symbol for me has long been the lighthouse, or the light — or watch — tower. This is, too, perhaps the most ancient expression as well — of the light seeker. The beauty of the metaphor of architecture, the deeper symbolism of the place, and making, will be about the construct of a world vision — what is a scene, seen, vision in the presence of the world.
The renovated shipyard is located in the beautiful bay of Yangcheng Lake, Suzhou. The departed factories nearby have been abandoned. The goal of this renovation is to awaken the vitality of the region. Therefore, in the process of transformation, we choose to draw lessons from the intention of the Lighthouse and sail, in order to bring warmth and memories to nearby residents and tourists.
Suzhou is separated from Yangcheng Lake by 28km, and the main scenic spot of Yangcheng Lake is about 30 minutes away by car.
The traditional handicraft workshops in Yangchenghu Town, which are family units, have been impacted by the rising private industry.
During the period of socialist transformation, the town built a lot of factories
In response to the call of reform and opening up, the original factories were closed by the government.
A large number of abandoned factories have been gradually forgotten.
Yangcheng Lake Town is central to the site. Yangcheng Lake Town's main scenic spot is located about 10 minutes away in the south.
It is adjacent to Yangcheng Lake and a large reed to the north. In the last century, many factories occupied the area, but they are now abandoned.
The traditional houses in Yangcheng Town were built along the river, and shipping was the primary mode of transportation at that time.
Gradually, due to the increasing number of ships coming and going, shipyards and docks gradually replaced some houses and were built in this small town.
In the 21st century, new roads in the area have made cars the main way of transportation, and shipping has been replaced.
Nowadays, the old shipyard has been forgotten by the people, and this land has gradually lost its former glory.
The lighthouse symbolizes home and hope as early as in Western literary and artistic works, etc The Old Man and the Sea & paintings by Giorgio de Chirico.
The original concept of factory renovation was to wake up the town’s memories by making the building shine again and guiding the ship like a lighthouse.

For the first time, the prison structure itself emerged as an important consideration, not only for prisoners’ health, but also as a means by which to facilitate supervision.
—PANOPTICON (Jeremy Bentham 1785)
The theme of my design is "Break the "Prison." As part of this program, the pentridge prison will become a vital hub of culture, creativity, and commerce connected to city life. In my concept, Pentridge Prison would be transformed into a vital hub from both a commercial and cultural standpoint. The site's south side, close to Sydney Road, will become a commercial activity zone. Near the lake reserve, the site's north side would become an exhibition and cultural activity zone. Using 'Panopticon' theory, liberate the urban "slave" from the hustle and bustle of modern life.
I proposed the concept of break the prison in my design. The initially closed and depressive prison would be transformed into an open exhibition space, and people who are depressed by city life are released into an open activity plaza.
I want to use architectural language to enclose a cultural activity plaza. Therefore, separated a single exhibition building into a central exhibition space with a series of outdoor exhibition spaces. These exhibition spaces scattered in the site play a role in connecting the cultural square and the natural lake reserve.

THE INTERACTION BETWEEN OLD BUILDING AND NEW EXHIBITION SPACES.
In the new exhibition space, there are no partition walls, and the space is divided into different functional areas through a frame structure. Translucent skin and frame structure make the space brighter and more open.
like the outdoor exhibition area on the prison's south side more. Posters and art pieces are on display.
The interior of the grand staircase is turned into a gallery. And the design of skylight is good, it can be linked to some artwork. The old prison's interior space now includes art galleries and study rooms.
Third and fourth floors are dominated by space experience. Display spaces are divided between an open space and a closed space to meet the display requirements of different activities.
The large staircase connects the building's second story to the outside city plaza. Following your visit to the main building, you can proceed directly to the Cultural Square via this entrance. Many people were sitting and relaxing on the steps.
The new exhibition space's second story is linked to the historic prison. While visiting, we may compare the scale variations caused by different space types—an exciting visiting experience.
The walking corridor will vary in height based on the terrain of the site and link to exhibition spaces scattered in the cultural plaza. There are various stay spots in the corridors, and we can see the outside world.
There are some exciting activity spaces between the outdoor exhibition space and the bluestone wall. Because of the terrain, these movable platforms have height differences.

Suzhou's old city has over a century’s history, and the form of the buildings has changed a lot in recent years. It is facing aging challenges, like limited household space, damaged facilities, and outdated life quality. Additionally, Due to the aging problem of the community, the economic ability becomes relatively low, and the community’s consensus declines. Therefore, the residents are less motivated to renovate spaces themselves and are less willing to cooperate with others.
Through this project, we would like to discuss, by using the micro-regeneration designs of twelve community sites, how to insert thoughtful facilities and improve the quality of public life with limited resources.
space, we want to provide a necessary living area for the residents, improve the quality of public life, enhance the sense of belonging on-site, converge the consensus of residents, and promote the joint effort towards a better life.
•THE PROTECTION AND REDEVELOPMENT OF RESIDENTIAL AREA AT HISTORIC BLOCKS
"Life" is an important feature of the cultural heritage value of historic blocks, and the residential block, as the main constituent type of historic blocks, becomes the focal point of the revitalization protection of historic blocks.
Most of the traditional residential historical blocks are located in the central part of the historical and cultural city. It not only serves as an important historical and cultural carrier but also provides spiritual sustenance and a sense of belonging in the hearts of people living and living in the historical district.
•THE LAKING SENSE OF BELONGING
The sense of belonging is in the category of psychology. The formation of belonging can make residents have a positive interaction to a certain extent, which is of great benefit to the positive development of society. The residential historical and cultural block is the main place for daily life entertainment and should be the source of residents' sense of belonging.
The primary school in this old community occupies a large space, with too many students, teachers and parents need to go to this school every day, it often causes traffic congestion.
We chose eight different kinds of courtyards residents to interview. We can find that because of the housing policy, there are at least 5 families living in each courtyard. And plus, there is also located an elementary school. There is no doubt that this old community is a kind of place where senior citizens, young migrant workers, and children live close together. With the narrow space and a large number of residents, it has faced a serious lack of basic functions for living.
Some old buildings in this community are under construction and ready to be developed into new businesses.
PROBLEMS:
1 The serious traffic jam caused by the students and their parents.
2 No parking space.
3 No activity space for local residents.
4 The narrow alley space in the old community.
5 The danger of privately built kitchen space
6 The lack of living functions
Due to the architectural space pattern or the traditional mode, the current kitchen still needs the external purchase of natural gas tanks, posing a safety hazard.
The internal space of the community is insufficient, and because of the storage space built by some residents, the internal space is very fragmented, the residents are independent of each other, and there is no communication and space for activities.

Distribute different functions in the alley between the community gables, ensuring the smallest space scale can be easily accessible to the elderly through electric tricycles.
The activity belt between gable walls forms a shared mode. Under this mode, more available space can be achieved while the living infrastructure of the residents can be improved. Plus, because of the unique spatial location, the sense of the field is also powerful.
THE PLAN OF THE SCHOOL AND COURTYAND SPACE
There is a large space at the back door of the school which should be handled by us for providing an activity space for students and their parents.
The design of the entrance space which connects the courtyard of each family and the public space can be seen in this plan.

FUNCTIONS: leisure space storage space parking space dumpster
SITE: the public space in the middle of gable walls

SPATIAL IMAGE
Considering the limited space of this old community, the functional box that needs to be placed is divided according to the uniform basic module size. Make the most reasonable layout of the space in the smallesr size.
The modular space usage pattern is too singular, so the variable surface structure that newly added can increase the richness of the space. Bring more possibilities for activities to residents. In addition, the curved space can also make up for the lack of the frame structure.
Jacobs recommends four pillars of effective city neighborhood planning:
To foster lively and interesting streets.
To make the fabric of the streets as continuous a network as possible throughout a district of potential subcity size and power.
To use parks, squares, and public buildings as part of the street fabric, intensifying the fabric's complexity and multiple uses rather than segregating different uses.
To foster a functional identity at the district level.

““Cities have the capability of providing something for everybody, only because, and only when, they are created by everybody.”.”
— Jane Jacobs, The Death and Life of Great American Cities
Regarding the community, the Chinese had the concept of tribes for 2000 years. This tribe gradually form the village and lasted for nearly a thousand years. This self-generated village has a strong community attribute and still maintains a lot of vitality.
Contrary to this, in recent times, due to the demand for industrial production and the rapid increase in the number of people, the urban form of Suzhou, which has lasted for 2,500 years, has undergone tremendous changes.
The ancient town of Luzhi is such a place, and there is a huge gap between the historical and cultural reserve in the south and the new residential buildings in the surrounding area. The focus of my design is how to deal with this fragmented feeling between new and old.

Height change of each residential group in this community
The north-south landscape axis closely links the residents from different residential blocks. And plus, with the commercial buildings in there, this landscape area will form an excessive space for new communities and old communities, and become the main leisure, communication, and entertainment space for residents and tourists.
The commercial complex that echoes the curve landscape enhances the quality of life of the surrounding residents, and plus, share the commercial pressure of the local traditional commercial street.

Our design of the outdoor platforms is referred to 99 Hudson Boulevard, a proposed 44-story office tower in Hudson. Yards.
The tower, by Henning Larsen Architects, features unique stacked glass boxes, separated by recessed and raised terraces. These recessed terraces are well integrated with the structure, dividing the volume and reducing the building's weight, while also providing a good landscape experience. So we used the concept of recessed terraces in our design.

WHAT'S NEW?
Photographed at the Sydney Powerhouse Museum.Aiyuan town in Siyang has a profound history of culture. The wood bench is not just traditional furniture in daily life, but also an indispensable and important production of Siyang festival culture. Dancing with the benches is one style in the well-known and distinctive Siyang folk dragon dance performance characterized by lanterns and benches. Our proposal BENCH THEATRE is to carry and inherit this culture.
The bench is selected as the essential design element in the plan, and the outdoor theater is constituted through the combination, array, and deviation of different bench sequences in site block 11 with the flat ground under the shadow of streams and pear trees. The constitution of wooden benches presents the natural and simple beauty of humanity in rural areas. In addition, to meet the needs of enjoying and participating in the performance event, the bench theater is also an important place for public activities.
Bench Theater is based on prefabricated principles to serve the purpose of ceremony and daily entertainment. It is not only a public art space but also a place that can be recombined into other variable functions. In daily life, it also can be distributed to every family. In addition, if it damages in the future, it can be easily repaired it by changing the unit. Except for the basic water tightness and anti-corrosion protection, we try our best to minimize the ecological negative impacts on the site such as avoiding building concrete floors and keeping the pear forest permeable. We try to integrate the design into the village without changing the original ecological environment.
In Chinese traditional culture, there is a saying: "The winding path leads to a secluded place, and then everything becomes clear."(曲径通幽,豁然开朗)
The picture depicts a person walking through a narrow winding path and finding an open scene at the end of it. In essence, this sentence describes the process by which people will finally achieve success after going through twists and turns and difficulties. In designing our pavilion space, we want to use this concept.
To simulate the mountain's trend, we first use Grasshopper to create a curved pavilion structure. Finally, wooden strips are superimposed to create the staggered curved structure.
Our first step was to design a stable support structure using small wooden strips. To create a curved pavilion, we need to cut different angles for each wooden strip. As the overhangs on both sides of the pavilion are long, we have to constantly improve the stability of the structure during the construction process.
There has always been a kind of structural aesthetic to Chinese ancient architecture. By surveying and mapping these structures, we will learn the principles and intentions behind their design.
Yuanxiang Hall is the main building in the Humble Administrator's Garden, with four fullyopenable facades. Bluestone is used as the foundation for its openable glass facades. An exterior circle of open corridors matches the surrounding landscape of water and mountains, creating a quiet artistic concept that combines architecture with nature.
The roof form of Yuanxiang Hall is an East Asian hip-and-gable roof, which belongs to the higher status of traditional Chinese roofs. It has a different internal structure than other traditional Chinese structures. The columns that support the building are essentially hidden behind its facade and within the corridors, making the interior space seem larger and more open.
