From The Desk Of...

Rabbi Robert A. Silvers rabbisilvers@cbiboca.org

This month as we celebrate Presidents’ Day, I thought I’d share some of the most important and famous “Presidential-Jewish Firsts.” George Washington: First to visit a synagogue, Touro, in Newport. Thomas Jefferson: First to propose religious freedom for Jews in his 1779 Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom in Virginia (adopted in 1785).

James Madison: First to appoint a Jew, the irrepressible Mordecai Manuel Noah, as Consul to the Barbary pirates of Tunisia (1813) to negotiate the release of imprisoned Americans. Martin Van Buren: First to order an American Consul to intervene on behalf of Jews abroad. In 1840, he instructed the U.S. Consul in Alexandria, Egypt to protect the Jews of Damascus who were under attack because of a false blood ritual accusation. John Tyler: First to nominate a U.S. Consul to Palestine (1844), Warder Cresson, a Quaker convert to Judaism. Franklin Pierce: First whose name appears on the charter of a synagogue. Pierce signed the Act of Congress in 1857 that amended the laws of Washington D.C. to enable the city's first synagogue, the Washington Hebrew Congregation, to incorporate. Rutherford B. Hayes: First to designate a Jewish ambassador for the purpose of fighting anti-Semitism. In 1870, he named Benjamin Peixotto ConsulGeneral to Romania. Theodore Roosevelt: First to appoint a Jew to the cabinet, Oscar S. Straus (Secretary of Commerce and Labor, 1906). William Howard Taft: First to attend a Seder while in office (1912) as a guest of Colonel Harry Cutler, first president of the National Jewish Welfare Board. Woodrow Wilson: First to nominate a Jew, Louis Brandeis, to the U.S. Supreme Court, holding firm, despite pressure to the contrary. Warren Harding: First to sign a Joint Congressional Resolution endorsing the Balfour Declaration and the Palestine Mandate supporting the establishment in Palestine of a national Jewish home for the Jewish people. Calvin Coolidge: First to participate in the dedication of a Jewish community institution (May 3, 1925): the Washington, D.C. Jewish Community center. Franklin D. Roosevelt: First to be given a Torah as a gift—a miniature Torah from Young Israel and another that had been rescued from a burning synagogue in Czechoslovakia. Harry S. Truman: On May 14, 1948, just 11 minutes after Israel's proclamation of independence, he was the first head of a government to recognize Israel. Dwight D. Eisenhower: First to participate in a national TV program sponsored by a Jewish organization in 1954 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the American Jewish community.

From The Desk Of... Robin Siegal President, Board of Trustees president@cbiboca.org

Someone recently asked me, “What’s your favorite thing to do at Congregation B’nai Israel?” I replied, “How much time do you have?”

I could talk about how much I love going to services. Our Friday night Shabbat services are a beautiful way to end the week and welcome our weekly respite with prayer and song. When we have engaging speakers, like Rabbi Daniel Freelander from the World Union for Progressive Judaism, Robert Tannen, the Associate Director of the SE Regional Office of the US Holocaust Memorial Museum, and others. I am enriched by their words and their presence. Or perhaps I feel my Judaism come alive through music, with guests like Shir Appeal, the talented student a cappella group from Tufts University who joined us in January, or with our adult or youth bands, or the choir. Or maybe it’s Saturday morning Torah study, where I have the opportunity to contemplate the weekly portion, sharing and learning with fellow congregants. Or maybe it’s at Saturday Shabbat services, kvelling over the b’nai mitzvah and recalling my own children’s services with a feeling of nostalgia and pride. I could talk about how I love our CBI Talks programs, especially the Nagle Family Film Jewish Festival, which provides the opportunity to see seven different films over the course of the season this year, all with various Judaic themes, in the beautiful VIP cocktail lounge with popcorn and cookies! Each knowledgeable and interesting host facilitates a thought-provoking discussion, adding to the enjoyment of an evening I love to attend, which is both entertaining and educational. I could talk about how I love our Kantor Family Social Action initiatives. From our Annual Feed the Hungry at Thanksgiving, to our upcoming Mitzvah Day at the end of February, giving service to others is an incredibly fulfilling way for me to participate in synagogue life. And with the addition of our new Monthly Mitzvah opportunities, such as cleaning the beach or volunteering at the food pantry, this could well be my favorite thing to do! I could talk about how I love to participate in WRJ/Sisterhood activities. Whether it was our Women of Valor Luncheon, or Praying with my Feet at the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Walk, or our upcoming Wine and Painting Party, socializing with my CBI friends is way up there on the list of my favorite things to do! (And our Brotherhood does some pretty fun stuff, too!) I could talk about each and every activity here at CBI, and still not reach a consensus on what my favorite thing is to do. I welcome all of you to participate in any of these, or any other program we provide. The synagogue is here for you, to enrich your life with spirituality, Jewish education, community service, entertainment and social opportunities. And if you have a great idea for a new program, please contact our Programming Coordinator, Minda Shaiman at minda.shaiman@cbiboca.org. So come join me anytime and help me figure out my favorite 4

Steve Allen Executive Director

steve.allen@cbiboca.org

If I wasn’t convinced that our move to Florida 4 years ago was the right move, it was reiterated over the Martin Luther King Weekend by our frozen trip to New York. I guess once you live down here for a longer time it becomes commonplace to take the beautiful weather (including a cold spell of 60!) for granted. We, in the Allen household, take nothing for granted anymore!

We are extremely busy at CBI planning special programming events and speakers for the coming season while also maintaining our fiscal responsibility of creating a new business budget and making sure we abide by our decisions. There are many exciting events coming up, and I encourage all of you to please visit our new and excellent website to get details. I want to focus on one upcoming event that no one should miss. We have started to sell our sponsorships and tickets to our major fundraiser on March 12 starring the two hottest Jewish Rock stars, Josh Nelson and Neshama Carlebach, and they are going quickly. There are affordable ticket prices for students all the way up to our top sponsorship level with several perks included. For those of you who have been lucky enough to hear these two talented young performers exhibit their talent at a Biennial or a concert, then I am “preaching to the choir.” Nashama and Josh appeal to all ages, from 16-90 and beyond, and we know you will be inspired by their performance. It will be a great musical evening while also helping out the major fundraising effort of CBI. They represent a spirit and energy of the reform movement while performing many familiar songs written by Josh’s mentor, Debbie Friedman (of blessed memory), and Neshama’s world famous father, Orthodox Rabbi, Shlomo Carlebach. Please join us and purchase your tickets now! The evening will begin at 7:00 pm with a CBI showcase of our choir, band, Miss Susan, and other surprises who will get the crowd warmed up in the courtyard with their musical talents, and some wine and cheese This is just a taste of what will be happening here on campus to increase CBI’s visibility and stature in the Jewish world of Palm Beach County and beyond. As my third month of being your Executive Director ends, I am pleased to have met so many of you already, and I continue to encourage you to contact me and come see me with comments, suggestions, ideas, complaints and yes, compliments. Enjoy these fabulous winter months!

Join us as we discuss this subject by looking at actual examples and learn how to evaluate the power of picture and see through what is being portrayed. ADULT LEARNING: SPECIAL EVENT Jewish Humor: From Russia with Laughs

with Dr. Leonard Berkowitz Tuesday, March 8, 10:00 am, Joel S. Nadel Boardroom A funny thing happened on the way to America—we brought our humor with us. As Jews immigrated to America from Eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, they brought their traditional stories and jokes. At first, the stories retained their original form (some even their original Yiddish!) but as time went on, Jewish humor in America evolved and took some of its character from its new environment. Let’s explore some of these stories and how Jewish humor developed in America in the last century. Cost: $10 per person. Purchase tickets at: login.cbiboca.org/berkowitz.

Tzevet T'shuvah/Recovery Team

"I was terribly confused about the meaning of 'compassion' when I came to Al-Anon. I thought it meant making excuses for the alcoholic or covering bad checks. Al-Anon helped me to find another word for this behavior: 'enabling.' I learned that when I cleaned up the consequences of alcoholic behavior, I enabled the alcoholic to continue drinking comfortably and acting out without having to pay the price. A more compassionate way to respond to those I love might be to allow them to face the consequences of their actions, even when it will cause them pain. "How do I know whether a particular action is enabling? While this is not always clear, I find it helpful to look carefully at my motives. Am I trying to interfere with the natural consequences of a loved one's choices? Am I trying to do for someone what they could do for themselves? Am I doing what I think is best for me? Do I resent what I am doing? If so, is it really a loving choice? Sometimes the most compassionate thing I can do is to let others take responsibility for their behavior. "Today I will remember that I have choices, and so does the alcoholic. I will make the best choices I can and allow others in my life to do the same without interference. I must learn to give those I love the right to make their own mistakes and recognize them as theirs alone." Excerpted from "Courage to Change," page 5. Our wedding took place in Palm Beach. During the process, we met with Rabbi Silvers and immediately felt a comfort and connection with him. Although the wedding ceremony was not at CBI, we became members of the congregation shortly thereafter. During our membership as a newlywed couple, we attended various services at CBI and always appreciated how good we felt leaving the services. In 2010, I gave birth to our first son, Jake. When Jake was 10 weeks old, I began Mommy and Me classes at CBI’s Baby Center. During my time in the Baby Center, my child and I met many wonderful friends and developed strong connections to the school. It has always been very important for me to be as involved in my children’s education as possible. This was instilled in me at a young age, as my own mother was very involved with both my religious and academic education. I am very fortunate to have the time to dedicate myself to every volunteer opportunity that has arisen over the past few years. In 2012, we had our second child Sam, and was asked to join the Parent Organization Board of NCECE. I gladly accepted the position and gave the new role my all. I thoroughly enjoy being in a position to help the school and ultimately the congregation in a multitude of ways, while working with great board and staff members. In 2015, I was honored to become the Chairperson of NCECE. This position has enabled me to not only help NCECE, but to also move into a more integral part of the congregation. Having attended an elementary school that was associated with a temple, the Jewish education along with the academics has always felt very natural. I want my children to have the same strong Jewish values I learned during my formative years in elementary school. Over the past few years, my many roles in the school and temple have opened my eyes and brought me closer to the amazing things CBI has to offer. It truly makes me feel special to be part of a Jewish community where I have established many close relationships. I hope CBI continues to grow and flourish in the Boca area. I truly look forward to serving many more years in the school and temple, and offering my assistance in a myriad of ways.
