Rabbi Marci R.Bloch rabbibloch@cbiboca.org
I recently had the honor of speaking at this year’s Night of Inspiration, a program created two years ago by the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County. The first program included the Senior Rabbis of local synagogues, and our very own Rabbi Silvers was one of the speakers. This year’s program featured nine women who lead agencies, day schools and synagogues. It really was amazing to be amongst these women and hear their journeys, and to learn what led them to do the work they are doing in our community. The passion and commitment displayed by the other women on the panel was truly inspiring. Boca Raton is blessed to have such exceptional women leading our community and working to make a positive impact in the lives of our people. As part of the evening, we were asked to share our journey or what inspires us. Many people have asked me what I spoke about. In short, I spoke about something that is very Jewish—asking questions. The full text of my speech is below. I share it with the hope that it might inspire all of us to ask more questions and to love harder. His name was Josh. He was five years old and he was in the religious school class that I was teaching at Kehillath Yisrael during my freshmen year of college. It was my first time teaching religious school. My mom encouraged me to teach to earn some extra money and she told me I would enjoy it. I wonder now if she also knew how much the children would teach me in that year. One day while I was teaching a unit on G-d, Josh leaned over to the little girl next to him, Sarah, and said, "Miss Bloch, if I hug her, is this G-d?” I was overwhelmed to the point of tears that a five-year-old would ask such a profound question. As I attempted to answer Josh, I wondered, do I know the answer to this question? Had I known the answer to many of the questions these children had asked me? And who was I to be answering them? At eighteen years old, while my vocabulary was more developed, I still had so many of these same questions about G-d and life that the children were asking—questions I had begun asking as a child. In fact, my mother who is here tonight can attest to the hours I kept her up—asking question after question. Those profound questions about G-d and the meaning of life are what led me to rabbinical school—where some of my questions found satisfactory answers, and others did not—where I learned that there can be multiple answers to the same question—and where I learned that some questions bring us to ask more questions, to which we may never know the answer. Now, almost 25 years after teaching that class of five year olds, my life is still about those questions. I still look for their answers as I study, and still open my heart to try to grasp life’s mystery as I pray. However, as I have aged and matured, I have become more comfortable not always having answers to those profound questions. I am sure many of you think Rabbis have all the answers, but my experiences have taught me that sometimes—like when a family member gets ill or dies—there simply are no satisfactory answers. I have learned that, in those moments when other answers fail us, we must understand what Josh understood—that the only answer is love.

The season is in full swing here in South Florida and at Congregation B’nai Israel! So many things are going on, with opportunities for worship, community service, and socializing with your CBI family and friends. But there is one special experience I would like to share with you that I had on Sunday, January 17th: our Interfaith Service at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. As many of you may know (some may not), we have had a relationship with Ebenezer for over 31 years, when our Rabbi Emeritis, Richard Agler, began a dialogue that has enriched both congregations and the entire city of Boca Raton for over three decades. Interfaith relations, especially between the black and white communities, were strained back in the early 1980’s. Ebenezer, the oldest black church in Boca, was a willing ally to be part of the discussion about how communities could work together and see their similiarities more than their differences. Here’s an interesting fact: our first joint service was held in 1985, a year after CBI’s founding, and a year before Martin Luther King, Jr. Day became a nationally observed holiday! And each year, our CBI congregants and choir (and now the band), join in worship and song with our Ebenezer brothers and sisters. This year, we were treated to inspirational words delivered by members of both congregations and guest speaker Julius Jackson, Sr., the CEO/President of Millennium Group Worldwide, as well as with readings performed by students of both congregations. A delicious meal followed, with members of CBI and Ebenezer interspersed throughout the room, sharing and eating together. Such an amazing day! But the MLK joint service is not our only contact with Ebenezer during the year. We partner with them annually for Feed the Hungry, providing a Thanksgiving-style dinner for close to 3,000 members of the local community in need. And this year, we’re doing something new: holding a Community BBQ on Lori Sklar Mitzvah Day, Sunday February 28th at 1:00 pm. So come out, join me, and volunteer (kids, too!) and help CBI continue to build the beautiful relationship we have with Ebenezer and the entire community. I am so proud to be part of CBI, connecting people together for a common cause, the dream of peace, justice, freedom and love, that would hopefully make Martin Luther King, Jr. and our own Jewish patriarchs and matriarchs, proud.
It is a wonderful thing when you can feel pride not only about yourself and your accomplishments, but it is even more worthwhile when you can feel pride about your job and your workplace. On Friday, February 12, Congregation B'nai Israel had the distinct honor to host a lunch for 40 top Jewish professionals comprised of Rabbis, Executive Directors, Board Members of the URJ (Union for Reform Judaism) and other Directors from Congregations as far south as Miami all the way up north to Palm Beach. The luncheon was planned so that we would be able to listen and interact with Rabbi Rick Jacobs, the top Reform Jewish Leader in the world, and the head of the URJ. Rabbi Jacobs led a discussion about a variety of topics and issues pertinent to all of the attendees. I was particularly proud when many of the top leaders spoke so highly about CBI. They commended us for all we do for the community with our social action projects and our collaborative efforts with churches and other non-profit Jewish agencies in the area. Rabbi Jacobs spoke about the importance of collaboration and complimented us on all he heard we are doing. It was particularly gratifying when he mentioned that we were giving the Jewish community the wonderful opportunity to hear true musical genius as we bring in Neshama Carlebach and Josh Nelson in concert on Saturday, March 12. He raved about their spirituality and their major contributions to the Jewish world of contemporary music and even gave a plug to all the leaders there to attend the concert as a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness a magical experience. Thank you Rabbi Rick! So it is everyone’s duty to follow our leader and his suggestion, (tongue planted in cheek), and please purchase the remaining tickets for the concert and experience a great musical experience here at CBI. It is our largest fundraiser this year, and I thank the many sponsors who have already stepped up. We need more to make this a truly special and successful evening both musically and financially. As usual, I am always available to meet with you should you have suggestions, comments, ideas, complaints or compliments!

CBI Talks... NAGLE FAMILY JEWISH FILM FESTIVAL Fill the Void
Wednesday, March 16, 7:00 pm, VIP Cocktail Room Hosted by Rabbi Marci Bloch Fill the Void tells the story of an Orthodox Hassidic family from Tel Aviv. Eighteen-year-old Shira is the youngest daughter of the family. She is about to be married off to a promising young man of the same age and background. It is a dream-come-true, and Shira feels prepared and excited. On Purim, her twenty-eight-year-old sister, Esther, dies while giving birth to her first child. The pain and grief that overwhelm the family postpone Shira’s promised match. Everything changes when an offer is proposed to match Yochay—the late Esther‘s husband—to a widow from Belgium. Yochay feels it‘s too early, although he realizes that sooner or later he must seriously consider getting married again. When the girls’ mother finds out that Yochay may leave the country with her only grandchild, she proposes a match between Shira and the widower. Shira will have to choose between her heart’s wish and her family duty. Running time 90 minutes. No cost to members. Non-members $10. No RSVP necessary. Tickets are available at the door.

At first, the stories retained their original form (some even their original Yiddish!) but as time went on, Jewish humor in America evolved and took some of its character from its new environment. Let’s explore some of these stories and how Jewish humor developed in America in the last century. There is no charge for this program. All are welcome.

Wednesday, March 30, 7:00 pm Fates & Furies by Lauren Goff Every story has two sides. Every relationship has two perspectives. And sometimes, it turns out, the key to a great marriage is not its truths but its secrets. At the core of this rich, expansive, layered novel, Lauren Groff presents the story of one such marriage over the course of twenty-four years. At age twenty-two, Lotto and Mathilde are tall, glamorous, madly in love, and destined for greatness. A decade later, their marriage is still the envy of their friends, but with an electric thrill we understand that things are even more complicated and remarkable than they have seemed. With stunning revelations and multiple threads, and in prose that is vibrantly alive and original, Groff delivers a deeply satisfying novel about love, art, creativity, and power that is unlike anything that has come before it. Profound, surprising, propulsive, and emotionally riveting, it stirs both the mind and the heart. For location and information, contact Janet Kleinman, 561.499.6784 or kleiwrite@bellsouth.net.

After three years of intense negotiations, the Israeli Government passed an historic and unprecedented resolution legalizing and officially recognizing the status of egalitarian prayer at the Western Wall. It calls for a significant revamping of the Western Wall area to create a more unified relationship between the three prayer areas (men's, women's, and egalitarian). The existing egalitarian space will be enhanced by the creation of an expanded platform with more access to the Western Wall. The site will be open through to the main plaza by removing existing visual barriers and building a new, inviting entrance. Mark your calendar for Friday, November 11, 2016 as we have the honor and great privilege to host Rabbi Gilad Kariv, Executive Director of the Israel Movement for Progressive Judaism (IMPJ), who has our admiration and praise for his tenacity in advancing this cause. At CBI we must continuously keep in mind why it is so important to support ARZA and IMPJ. Please go to CBI website www.cbiboca.org and become an ARZA member, or make an additional donation if you already are an ARZA member. 9

I have been a member of the Congregation B’nai Israel family for as long as I can remember. My older sister, Emily, became a Bat Mitzvah here in 2009, and ever since then I’d been looking forward to my own Bat Mitzvah. It started out as excitement just about the party, but as I started going through the process, it became more and more about ceremony and the achievement as well. The whole experience helped me to realize how lucky I am in ways I never thought of before. We learned how the Jewish people throughout history have suffered through persecution, slavery, hunger, and much worse. We also learned about the importance of tzedakah and how big a part of Judaism that it is. I have been very fortunate to have never gone hungry or had to worry about basic needs or had to worry about being who I am. I was surprised to learn that many people in Boca Raton, and even people in the CBI community, struggle with affording basic needs. One of the effects of this is that they can’t afford to put their kids through the Bar or Bat Mitzvah experience that has been so significant to me. I decided that I wanted to do something to help. I asked Rabbi Silvers and Kim Beame if they could help me find a family in the CBI community that needed help to have their child become B’nai Mitzvah. After several discussions, we decided the best way was to establish a scholarship fund that would help these kids and, hopefully, through future donations, continue to help those in need to become B’nai Mitzvah. Congregation B’nai Israel has agreed to establish this fund, and to encourage all future Bar and Bat Mitzvah kids to donate a portion of the gifts that they receive. I decided to lead the way and donate 100% of my Bat Mitzvah gifts to this fund with the hope that not only can I help kids in need today, but that other kids will be inspired to contribute as well and that the fund will grow and help other CBI families well into the future.

EXCEPTIONAL CULTURE
by Design
Culture is a rich word, with many meanings. It can be a way of thinking and behaving that exists in a given place. It can be the act of developing the intellect through education. It can also be a refined taste in the arts and humanities. At Sinai Residences of Boca Raton, our culture is all of those things. From the social, recreational, and educational programs we offer, to our celebration of family through our affiliation with the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County, everything we do is designed to create an exceptional culture that enriches all our lives.
