A Letter from the Principal Dear Families and Friends, Ending a school year and beginning a new one during a pandemic has its challenges and opportunities. A school board member recently shared a quote from scientist Edward Teller that I found particularly poignant at this time. “When you come to the end of all the light you know, and it’s time to step into the darkness of the unknown, faith is knowing that one of two things shall happen: Either you will be given something solid to stand on or you will be taught to fly.” This has certainly been a time to rely on faith while envisioning school in new ways, implementing changes that ensure a safe and healthy learning environment for all. After much preparation, we opened on campus August 10 to a student body who were excited to be back with their friends and teachers. Likewise, school parents have been a positive support from home, expressing appreciation that students could attend school in person.

The school-wide annual theme of “Fortitude” was wisely chosen by the faculty to promote strength and courage in a year when this cardinal virtue will remind us to be patient with life’s obstacles and stay true to what is good and just. I see examples of students’ fortitude each day in their perseverance at tasks, their willingness to do what is right, and their integrity in the face of peer pressure. I also see fortitude in teachers who adapt their instruction to current circumstances and who’ve added new digital tools to their repertoire in anticipation of change, modeling for students the courage to be pioneers. One veteran teacher commented that last spring’s remote learning provided the best professional development ever! Adversity gives us opportunities to think outside the box and step outside our comfort zone in ways that enable us to grow. We will be better, smarter, and stronger because we are proceeding with faith and fortitude. Christ the King School was ready to respond to the needs of its families this year thanks to the strong encouragement and loyal support of our pastor, parish, school board, families, and friends. My heart brims with gratitude on behalf of the CKS children, faculty, and staff. Sincerely,

The Mary Ann (Neuhoff) Sullivan Legacy Scholarship, was established in 2018 in memory of Mary Ann ‘75, by her husband, George. The scholarship is based on exemplification of a Christian spirit, modeling Christ in behavior towards classmates, faculty and staff, both in and out of the classroom, kindness and gentleness, with a “spirit of generosity.” The recipents are also given a cross made from the original gym floor. The Thomas Greeley Scholarship is a new scholarship and was donated in memory of Thomas Greeley, grandfather of CJ ‘18 and Sean Meffe ‘20. It is awarded to a student who has shown strides in learning due to outstanding effort and a strong work ethic. The inaugural recipient for this scholarship is Olek Balinski ‘24. Our Academic Banquet and End of the Year Award Ceremonies were virtual this year, but were full of good news about our students. Seventeen students received scholarships totalling about $29,000. Students in 3rd-8th grades were recognized for honor roll and principal’s list status throughout the year, recognition of 4th-7th grade Duke TIP students, and Catholic Math League. We also recognized Brittany Francescon Meriwether ‘98 as the 2020 recipient of the Teacher Award of Excellence. The Karen Meffe Science Scholarship is a new scholarship donated by the Meffe family in memory of Karen Meffe, aunt of CJ ‘18 and Sean Meffe ‘20. It is awarded to a student who is enthusiastically interested in the Science field. The inaugural recipient for this scholarship is Parker Causey ‘21. Karen Meffe Science Scholarship - Parker Causey

We are proud to announce good news about John. John graduated on Friday, September 24th from Lincoln Memorial University School of Medical Sciences Physician Assistant Program with a Master of Medical Science degree. “The Class of 2020 has made it through what I would consider the toughest circumstances that anyone could have envisioned. As we navigate through a global pandemic they stayed the course, they persevered,” said Dr. Stephen Noe, program director for LMU-SMS Physician Assistant Program.

The physician assistant (PA) profession is one of the fastest growing health professions in the country and has been repeatedly named by Forbes magazine as the best master’s degree for jobs in the United States. A physician assistant is educated in the medical model. PAs are nationally certified to work side by side with both osteopathic and allopathic physicians in every medical specialty. PAs are licensed to diagnose illness, prescribe medications and assist in surgery. They conduct pysical exams, order and interpret medical tests and provide counseling on preventive health care. A PA has at least six years of education; a four-year undergraduate degree and the master’s-level physician assistant degree. PA students complete more than 2,400 hours of clinical rotations prior to graduation. John and his wife, Lauren, recently moved back to Tennessee. Nashville. Lauren is a Learning Specialist at St. Matthew School in Franklin, TN. John has passed his Boards exam and hopes to find employment in his new profession. Congratulations, John!

The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named Emily Phan ‘17 as a National Merit Semifinalist. Emily is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta (math honor society), the National Honor Society and the Cum Laude Society. Emily also won the prestigious Mary Catherine Strobel Volunteer Award for 2020 in the Direct Service category, for her commitment to The Little Pantry That Could and her dedication to serving others. Grey Wilder ’17 has also been named as a National Merit Semifinalist. Grey ‘17 is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society, and the Cum Laude Society. Grey is also active in service programs in the community, earning induction into the St. Vincent de Paul Service Society as a junior, and is a member of the Relay For Life Committee. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has named Sam Deckbar ‘17 as a National Merit Commended Scholar. Sam is taking five AP courses this year and completed four additional AP courses as a junior and sophomore. He is a member of the Mu Alpha Theta, the National Honor Society, the Chinese Honor Society, and Cum Laude Society. Sam serves as a Student Ambassador, participates in Mock Trial, and is a member of the American Sign Language Club and the Relay For Life Committee. Congratulations to Ben Strobel ‘17, who received news that he has been selected to be a member of the 2020 Macy’s Great American Marching Band in this year’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Ben, an alto saxophonist, was selected after Macy’s reviewed performances of high school band musicians from across the nation.

Weddings John Arnold ‘08 married Lauren Lombardi on July 13, 2019 at Cathedral of the Incarnation. Benjamin Barrett ‘10 married Kassidy Anguiano on May 2, 2020. Jackson Coursey ‘06 married Rebecca Butler on May 16, 2020 in the Christ the King Grotto, by Reverend Dexter Brewer. Jackson works for Price CPAs and Rebecca is a nurse at Vanderbilt. They live in the Nations. Aaron Goins ‘05 married Katelyn Hearne on July 29, 2020 (what would have been Aaron’s grandmother and parishioner Betty Ryan Howington’s 93rd birthday) at Christ the King Church, by Deacon Brian Schulz. Aaron currently works in Medical Device Sales with Stryker in their Spine Division, and Katelyn is a Sales Manager at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel. Aaron is the son of Rachael (Howington) Goins ‘74.

Sarah is the daughter of Chris ‘77 and Katy Holmes and the granddaughter of Phillip ‘49 and Sallie Holmes. Britton (Catignani) married Matthew Tallent Brown on October 17, 2020 at a private family residence in Nashville, TN. Britton’s father, Dan Catignani ‘70 (deceased) was born on that date. Britton and friends started a CKS scholarship in Dan’s name in 2016.
