Italy is rightfully known as the land of diversity. There is quite literally something for everyone. Its stunning architecture is equally as pleasing as the untouched natural landscape. Its unrivaled history encompasses religion, art, food, wine, romance, and culture.

Historical ruins are one of Italy’s major attractions because it’s a chance to witness history up-close and in person. Some of the must-see Roman ruins you should visit while in Italy include the Colosseum, Pantheon, and the Forum. The Colosseum is still partly intact due to its impressive Roman-style architecture and engineering. Built out of concrete and stone, this oval-shaped amphitheater was initially designed to entertain thousands of spectators watching animal ghts and gladiatorial combat. The Pantheon is another specimen of Greco-Roman architecture. Dating back to the 7th century BC, the Forum was Rome’s downtown district of temples and meeting spaces, arguably known as the social, political, and commercial hub of the Roman empire. The remaining structures to visit include the Septimius Severus Arch known as Arco di Settimio Severo, the meeting house of the Roman senate which was known as the Curio, the temple devoted to the God, Saturn called Tempio di Saturno, and the Arch of Titus, an honori c arch known as Arco di Tito.

Pompeii is the infamous ancient Roman city that was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Nineteen feet of ash and debris killed thousands of lives within seconds. Visitors ock to observe the morbid preservation of su ering that is now frozen in place, capturing the moment of death. The plaster casts were made from pouring material into the 1,700year-old volcanic shells formed around the skeletons of those left behind.

A World Heritage Site is a landmark legally protected by the United Nations Educational, Scienti c, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Italy has the distinction of having over 50 sites, more than any other country on the World Heritage List.

One of the remarkable things about Italy is that each area is its jewel in the crown. A person could visit one region and then have an entirely di erent experience throughout their next visit. Venice and Florence are vastly di erent, yet both possess unique culture, art, and architecture.
