What does it mean to be apart but not separate? Sicily, although it is part of Italy, is geographically apart from the rest of the country. Rather than thinking of the island as a separated, isolated entity, Tesserae Atelier is an artist residency that connects the rich history of mosaic art that is present throughout all of Italy by promoting and cultivating this artistic practice. In this working/learning community, external artists come to learn the traditional practice of mosaic making and re-introducing the craft in their own contemporary art. Artists are then able to showcase their work as as a fusion of the ancient and present with the community. It is intended for the mosaics to evolve and populate the site beyond the idea of the architect’s intervention as artists continue to live and create in Tesserae Atelier. By putting the true “final” design of the site in the hands of the visiting artists and the communit, the hope is that the design becomes a beacon of collaboration and growth that can be expanded upon for decades.

APART

The idea that two (or more) objects can get very close but can never meet.

Napa Valley, California

The Napa Valley Region is responsible for producing over seven million cases of wine each year. The wide array of soil profiles and microclimates allow for this area to be an ideal farmland for grapes. The project, Topography Vineyards aims to create a rich experience for the public to connect with the Napa Valley region and its wine. Grape vineyards which lead from the public road up to the project allow for visitors to learn about the creation of this alcoholic beverage straight from its source. The architecture is designed in response to the land’s sloped topography. Wine making spaces and more public spaces are distinguished by the different orientations, however, they are seamlessly connected throughout the building so that circulation can occur all throughout the project.

Edgemere is a neighborhood in Queens area with residents that are proud to be members of the community. While the area shows signs and further potential for strong community bonds, the flooding that has occurred over many years in the area have displaced and disconnected many people. Because residents outsource to other places in the borough participate in community events, a design research study was done to better understand how people engage with the arts and culture within Edgemere. A manifesto that centralized on community values was created to inform how we would approach the project. Further research served as a guide to find areas for design opportunities with the intention of centralizing community in order to strengthen, empower, and connect all people of Edgemere. Our intent was to design community scale interventions to promote community involvement and engagement in activating a vibrant communtiy-scape.

FIRE STATION NO. 7
Columbus, Indiana
Collaboration with Sarah Fellingham
Syracuse University School of Architecture Spring 2023 | ARC 409
Smoke, fire, toxins, chemicals. These are some of the many hazardous conditions fire fighters are exposed to regularly. After studying existing fire station typologies, we noticed that these unhealthy conditions are also reflected in the spaces firefighters live and work in. Fire Station No. 7 aims to re-evaluate the firehouse to prioritize wellness and the idea of reflecting and taking care of oneself–this includes mental, physical, social, and environmental health. In design, this gets executed in the form of a wellness “core” that intersects the working spaces. This core is emphasized aesthetically with wood material to contrast the industrial feel of the working spaces and houses programs relating to wellness such as outdoor space, sauna, recreational, kitchen, and dining. Firefighters using the space are encouraged to practice and prioritize their health and their wellbeing.

2021 - Present

Pursuing my undergraduate in architecture has constantly encouraged me to study not only the design of buildings, but also the many other artistic mediums. Hand sketching, painting, and photography are three unique hobbies I continue to practice to challenge and flourish my creativity and understanding of design.
