In this annual report, you will read about those families and the amazing journeys happening at The Arc Ontario every day, including a family of coworkers who have made the agency their home away from home. You will also learn about how our passionate and dedicated core staff have built their own work family after nearly 20 years together, and you will read about a young man and his family’s journey with the agency as they explore opportunities that will lead to gainful employment. Families are the compass that guides us. They are the inspiration to reach great heights, and our comfort when we occasionally falter. We are extremely proud of all that The Arc Ontario family has achieved together, and we are thrilled to be able to play a role in helping people with disabilities or other challenges nurture their uniqueness and engage in active citizenship. As we reminisce over this past year, it only reinforces the immeasurable impact our work continues to have on countless families living in Ontario County and the surrounding region. ere at The Arc Ontario, we take great pride in those who work here that have dedicated their lives to supporting others. We have a family of four who all work together at The Arc Ontario. Nearly 30 years ago, Laurie Carney joined The Arc Ontario as a member of the Residential Team, and she has worked at the same residential home ever since. Approximately 10 years ago, Laurie’s daughter, Ryan Burba joined the agency as well, and she was recently promoted to Assistant Director of Program Support Services.

A Family of Coworkers

“My father, Greg Carney saw all of us enjoying our work and decided to join The Arc Ontario’s Residential Department,” said Ryan. “My husband, Garret Burba was also looking for a position that provided him with more hands on work, and he joined the agency over five years ago as a Facilities Specialist,” she continued.

Ryan’s sister, Lauren also completed an internship with The Arc Ontario. Shortly after graduating, she became a direct support professional and worked in the agency’s Residential Department. Although not currently with the agency, Lauren still works with another chapter of The Arc family to this day. “I choose to work at The Arc Ontario because I enjoy all of the work we do for the people we support,” said Ryan. “I feel my personal values align with the agency’s values, which makes my work feel even more meaningful,” she continued. “Coming to work every day is easy.” The work/family balance has been incredibly helpful for Ryan and her family. They are able to spend time together despite having different schedules. Ryan has also made many connections with other staff members at the Arc Ontario as well, and many of them have become like family. “They were at my baby shower and my wedding, and I have attended personal events for many of my coworkers,” said Ryan. “It’s like having a whole other family. I’ve made so many special connections with different families that I’ve worked with in the clinical service department as well,” she continued. “It is nice to remain a part of their lives and get updates on graduations and other life milestones.”

The Burbas and the Carneys have made The Arc Ontario their home away from home. They are just one of the families who have grown with our agency over the years and continue to play an active role in making our community a better place. With many positions available across Ontario County, we would love for you to join The Arc Ontario family and help us achieve our vision of people we support becoming one with their communities.

A Family’s Journey

W

e are proud to provide services and supports to families throughout Ontario County and the surrounding region. We are lucky to be able to witness firsthand the growth and development of the people we support as they explore who they are. One such family on an incredible journey with The Arc Ontario is the Gerstner Family. Jack is a recent graduate of The Arc Ontario’s Project SEARCH at Eastview Mall program. He spent the last year completing internships at various establishments throughout the mall, honing and developing his skillset as he plans for future employment. Jack has flourished through Project SEARCH, and his family has seen tremendous personal growth during his time with the program. “Project SEARCH has been a great opportunity for me,” said Jack. “We all worked together to learn new skills, develop positive relationships with coworkers and grow as a team,” he continued. “We need to remember the skills taught to us, continue working hard, and remember to always be part of the team,” he continued. Working at Champps has been Jack’s favorite internship. The interest came naturally, as Jack completed a culinary program during his junior and senior year of high school and discovered how much he enjoyed kitchen prep work. While Jack was completing the program, the Gerstner family reached out to The Arc Ontario to begin career assessments to help Jack focus on specific opportunities that aligned with his personality, strengths and preferences. The Gerstners have been a part of The Arc Ontario family ever since. “With every opportunity and internship, Jack has developed great relationships,” said Tedra Gerstner, Jack’s mother. “Jack works hard and wants to do everything – the experiences have been wonderful,” she continued. “He now has many potential job opportunities moving forward thanks to Project SEARCH,” she continued. Along with his time at Champps, Jack has also enjoyed internships with Goodwill and L.L. Bean. Each organization provided on the job training experiences that will serve Jack well in any career he chooses. His time at Project SEARCH has allowed him to broaden his exposures and experiences, and his family credits The Arc Ontario for making their world easier to navigate. Jack’s plans don’t stop with finding meaningful employment. Jack also recently obtained his driving permit and will be taking his driver’s training courses soon. After graduating from Project SEARCH, Jack now plans to continue working with The Arc Ontario to identify other areas of interest as he explores career opportunities moving forward. “He may pursue another career coaching opportunity, or he may apply for a job and start working full time,” said Scott Gerstner, Jack’s father. “He has clear goals, and he will compete for them knowing that we are all here to love and support him,” he continued. “We have had a very positive experience with the team at The Arc Ontario. Everyone takes the time to get to know Jack and understand his needs and his ambitions,” said Scott. “We are excited to continue working together to provide Jack with the best path to be fulfilled, successful and independent.” Jack’s is just one of the amazing stories happening every day at The Arc Ontario. Your support allows us to continue offering new ways to provide innovative programs and services for the people we support to flourish and achieve their full potential. We are grateful for our community partners and the families who put their trust in us to help their loved ones succeed and become one with their communities. Check out more stories at

The Arc Ontario Family

t The Arc Ontario, we are all about families. From the families who receive services and supports to the family we have become as coworkers, we are always striving to provide opportunities for the people of our community to flourish and achieve their full potential. That is why many of our core staff members at The Arc Ontario have been with the agency for so long. With a staff of 500, many have worked together for more than 20 years. They have witnessed firsthand the tremendous impact our innovative programs and services have had on countless families living throughout Ontario County and the surrounding region. Having worked side by side for many years, our staff has grown into a family of their own, together dedicating their lives to helping others and making a difference each and every day. Many have come and gone over the years, however it is inspiring to see so many familiar faces still invested in our mission to foster lifelong fulfillment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities or other challenges.

Over the years, our tenured staff members have formed strong bonds with one another, and they have developed wonderful relationships with the individuals we support. They have celebrated milestones together and watched as the talented people we support grew before their eyes and became one with their communities. They have been there for each other through thick and thin, particularly over the last two and a half years. Though it proved to be a challenging time in our field, our work family banded together and grew stronger, leaning on our core values of integrity, respect, teamwork and commitment to overcome adversity and continue creating ways to provide new opportunities for the individuals we support. “It is wonderful to have such a committed core group of coworkers who have been through so much together over the years,” said Ann Scheetz, Executive Director. “We are incredibly grateful to have such a passionate and dedicated work family that continues to inspire each and every day. Their dedication is unmatched, and we are thankful to have them as part of our organization.” As you can see, The Arc Ontario family continues to grow in size and strength. With your support, we have amplified our collective voice as we continue advocating for increased funding and greater opportunities for the people we support as well as their families. It is amazing what families can achieve together. Join The Arc Ontario Family!
