STUDENT SUCCESS One of the things that my experience has taught me is that if you are trained as a scientist in your youth — through your high school and college — if you stay with the STEM disciplines, you can learn pretty much all of the subjects as you move along in life. Your scientific disciplines play a very important role, and ground you very well as you move into positions of higher and higher authority, whatever the job is. DEFINING ENGAGEMENT IN THE SCIENCES AND HEALTH PROFESSIONS The sciences and health professions share a tradition of engaged learning that has three distinguishing, positive characteristics: 1) a problem-

centered approach in the context of professional practice; 2) an experiencebased learning model; and 3) a combination of individual and team learning.

Models vary considerably across disciplines and levels of education —

from laboratory research, fieldwork and capstone projects to internships,

externships and cooperative education or shadowing experiences, clinical apprenticeships and service learning.

Academic pathways define a well-structured and progressive series of increasingly independent immersion experiences, culminating with a practicum that offers students an opportunity to build on their area of expertise or experiment with something new.

Best practices integrate competency-based education with sequential

levels of mastery that are directly linked to workforce needs as defined by employers and the profession.

OPENING GATEWAYS The College is dedicated to building a community for mathematics

students at all levels. Math Corps engages more than 150 students and teachers from around Greater Cleveland for six weeks every summer.

This nationally recognized program helps students in middle and high school overcome academic hurdles while college students and young professionals learn how to become better mentors and teachers.

Founded in Detroit, Math Corps began replication in Cleveland with start-

up funding from the David and Inez Myers Foundation. At its core, Math

Corps is united by a simple but unwavering belief that all children have a

Dr. Domholdt left Ohio for college but all of

her siblings attended CSU during her father’s

tenure in mechanical engineering at the Fenn College of Engineering from 1967 to 1985.

After working as a physical therapist at Wishard Memorial Hospital in Indianapolis, Dr. Domholdt

spent 22 years as a faculty member and dean of the Krannert School of Physical Therapy at the

University of Indianapolis and 11 years as vice president for Academic Affairs at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, MN. Both higher

recognizes Bette’s service to CSU with awards to students who show academic promise in

their pursuit of a health profession, preferably occupational therapy.

TOP RANKING RESEARCH THE CENTER FOR GENE REGULATION IN HEALTH AND DISEASE Now celebrating its 10-year anniversary,

GRHD was established with a $900,000 grant from the Ohio Third Frontier Commission’s Research Scholars Program. It was quickly named a Center of Research Excellence by the Ohio Department of Higher Education.

GRHD capitalizes on its interdisciplinary nature with members from the biological, geological and environmental sciences, chemistry and

GRHD scientists aim to enhance and integrate research on the molecular mechanisms of health and disease, and the identification of therapeutic targets. Their research has

implications for the diagnosis and treatment of the most common diseases around the world,

including heart disease, neurological disease, infectious disease and cancer. Researchers have made seminal discoveries with the

potential to revolutionize treatment options.

Over the last 10-years, GRHD members have

been awarded more than $28 million in grants

from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, International Human Frontiers Science Program Organization,

American Heart Association and Department

of Defense. GRHD also has been successful in

attracting nearly $3.6 million in private donor support.

The GRHD Pilot, Innovation and Bridge Fund recognizes the challenges researchers face sustaining a laboratory in an increasingly

competitive funding environment. The fund was started in 2013 with a gift from College

alumnus John Vitullo (PhD, Regulatory Biology '84). It supports laboratory research between

grant cycles and helps researchers prepare for grant submission.

to be healthy and thrive. The project is made possible through a $699,960 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.

NEW FACILITIES The College understands that investing in infrastructure — our buildings, facilities, equipment and resources —not only

contributes to the recruitment and retention of

our faculty and students, but that environment impacts learning.

In 2016, the Psychology Department moved

to the Union Building, located at 1836 Euclid

Avenue. Originally built in 1905, this eight-story historic building was redeveloped through a public-private partnership with CSU. The

building also houses the Counseling Center, Financial Aid Office, CSU Foundation and landmark pizzeria Rascal House.

The College also embarked on a multi-

phased project to make much-needed capital improvements to the teaching and research

laboratories in the Science Center. This statesupport project totals $13.7 million and was

broken down into multiple stages to minimize disruption for our students and the research enterprise.

In Phase I, eight teaching laboratories were transformed into collaborative learning

environments for physics and the biological, geological and environmental sciences.

The College also carved out a welcoming

new student lounge on the CSU InnerLink.

Phase II kicked off in Fall 2018 with new laboratories for organic chemistry and

instructional research, where our students actively engage with peers and faculty.

STATE-OF-THE ART EQUIPMENT The Center for Gene Regulation in Health

and Disease (GRHD) has many state-of-theart pieces of equipment such as a CCMI

DeltaVision deconvolution microscope and a Nikon AI multiphoton-ready confocal

microscope with Perfect FocusTM and real-time video imaging.

Recently, GRHD member Bibo Li was awarded a Shared Instrument Grant (S10) from the

National Institutes of Health for a digital laser scanner biomolecular imaging system, the

Amersham Typhoon 5. This next generation

laser scanner is designed for versatile imaging and precise quantitation of fluorescent,

colorimetric and radiolabeled proteins and nucleic acids.

A common theme for many of the research experiments performed in the GRHD labs

is to measure various changes in cellular

macromolecules (i.e., DNA, RNA and proteins)

during development, aging or under diseased

conditions. The Amersham Typhoon 5 has the

specifications required for GRHD researchers to study gene expression regulation.

SCHOOL OF HEALTH SCIENCES CSU is collaborating with Cuyahoga Community College and Lorain County Community

College to address regional workforce needs through the addition of equipment required for education and training of future and

incumbent workers to fill in-demand jobs in the biomedical and health care sectors. It is

projected that we will need more than 10,000

workers annually through 2024. State-of-the-

art equipment is used for the development of contemporary high-tech skills for students in speech and hearing, and physical and occupational therapy.

The Speech and Hearing Program is adding Fiberendoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) equipment to prepare students for the growing practice area of evaluation

and treatment of swallowing disorders. State-

of-the-art simulation of this invasive procedure,

which represents the best practice in the field, is typically limited to medical facilities. Thus, this is particularly important for students aspiring to compete for jobs in hospitals, clinics and

skilled nursing facilities. Approximately 70% of speech and hearing majors work in these

medical settings after graduation. The College’s continuing education programs to train

practicing speech-language pathologists on

the latest equipment is also in high demand.

DIVERSITY COUNCIL The College is dedicated to applying the

principles and practices of diversity as tools for inclusive excellence. Our Diversity Council was

established with the College’s founding in 2003 to promote awareness, accommodation and

appreciation of differences among students, faculty and staff.

Each year, the College Diversity Council leads a project designed to empower faculty and staff to develop and leverage knowledge,

skills, resources and networks; ultimately, transforming university culture.

In 2017, world events and discovery of

campus hate literature were the impetus

to shift the College’s focus to experiences

of international students. After developing and field-testing a survey, 308 majors and

graduate students in the College were invited to participate. The survey revealed that the

majority of international student respondents (80%) find Cleveland State to be a welcoming and supportive academic environment, but we can do more to create opportunities for

positive interactions and socialization among students. Areas of concern included a lack of

family/non-CSU friends, language differences/ difficulty communicating, different interests/

values from other students and a tendency to be overlooked by other students. In 2018, the

College is playing a leadership role in rallying

fellow Vikings across the University to address this challenge.

PASSAGES CAROLINE ROBINSON BRAYLEY On February 29, 2016, the occupational therapy community lost an ardent supporter and dear friend. Caroline Brayley, PhD, OTR/L, FAOTA, earned her Bachelor of Science degree in

occupational therapy from the University

of New Hampshire, her Master of Education degree from SUNY Buffalo and her Doctor

of Philosophy degree from the University of Pittsburgh.

Dr. Brayley was the director of the Occupational Therapy Program at CSU from 1976 to 1982.

Under her leadership, the program was initially accredited by the American Occupational

Commission on Accreditation in 1976 and grew from a small cohort of students to classes of

25. She was instrumental in the passage of the Occupational Therapy licensure law in Ohio in

1978, having served as the president of the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association.

When she was recruited to the University of Pittsburgh to become the founding chair of the occupational therapy program in 1982,

her students cemented her legacy to CSU and the profession with the establishment of the

Caroline R. Brayley Scholarship in Occupational Therapy. The act so touched Dr. Brayley, she endowed the fund through her own giving.

students who exhibit academic excellence, have financial need and participate in professional organizations.

RALPH GARDENER-CHAVIS Chemist and chemistry professor

Ralph Gardner-Chavis, PhD, was born on

December 3, 1922, in Cleveland to Vivian Hicks

Gardner, a teacher and housewife, and Clarence Chavis Gardner, a musician and government worker. Dr. Gardner-Chavis was educated

in the Cleveland Public School system and

graduated from John Adams High School in

1939. He went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of Illinois at

Urbana-Champaign in 1943. He completed his

graduate studies at Western Reserve University, earning both his master’s and PhD degrees in chemistry in 1952 and 1959, respectively.

During World War II, Dr. Gardner-Chavis took a job as a research assistant on the Manhattan Project, which resulted in the United States

developing the atomic bomb to end the war in

1945. Immediately after leaving this position in 1947, he was unable to find a job as a chemist 52

years.

Dr. Gardner-Chavis took a teaching position in CSU’s chemistry department where he

held a full-time faculty position from 1968

to 1985. As a professor, he had an interest in early childhood learning and development

and started a program with his students that

advocated reading to babies. He fought for the inclusion of black studies and multi-racial

courses in the curriculum at CSU. Dr. GardnerChavis went on to hold emeritus status in the

CSU chemistry department while continuing his

research on catalysis and molecular technology.

Throughout his career as a chemist,

Dr. Gardner-Chavis published numerous

research articles. He became a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity in 1942 and

the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) in 2001.

Dr. Gardner-Chavis passed away on March 27, 2018, at age 95.

ranking African American administrator in the university’s history and led a restructuring of Stanford’s student services during her eightyear tenure at the university.

Dr. Edmonds arrived at a time that Professor

Condoleezza Rice (who became provost in 1993) remembers as challenging. Stanford was still trying to rehabilitate facilities damaged by

the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake. The campus faced budget challenges and an ongoing

dispute with the federal government over

research costs. “She was implacable. She was capable. She was elegant,” said Rice, now a

professor at the Graduate School of Business and a senior fellow at the Hoover Institution.

Edmonds “embraced Stanford and was a role

model for students, staff, faculty and a leader in the community.”

After leaving Stanford, Dr. Edmonds returned to Spelman as special assistant to the president.

Dr. Edmonds is also remembered for her

leadership outside of the campus confines.

Her obituary notes that she “had leadership

roles in over thirty organizations and received over 20 honors and awards for her service, including two honorary doctorates and

highest honors from the American Physical

Therapy Association and the Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education.”

MARY MCKINNEY EDMONDS A native of Cleveland, Dr. Edmonds graduated

from Spelman College with a bachelor’s degree in biology. She was class valedictorian.

She later earned a master’s degree in health

studies and a doctorate in sociology from Case Western Reserve University. She practiced PT

in Cleveland before joining the faculty of CSU

in 1972. From 1976 to 1981, Edmonds served as

Dean of CSU’s College of Health and Community Services and was the founding director of the physical therapy program.

Later, she served as vice president of student affairs at Bowling Green State University.

She was the first African American dean at

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI ANN M. FRANGOS Ann M. Frangos (MS, Mathematics ’77) retired from AT&T as assistant vice president —

credit and collections. She was responsible for accounts receivable management for

commercial accounts worldwide and oversaw

operations in seven call centers across the U.S. and in three international centers.

During her 36 years in the telecommunications industry, Frangos held a variety of positions

in credit and collections, finance, accounting operations, budgeting, long-range planning and operations research. She also served

as director — human resources, where she was responsible for directing the EEO and

Affirmative Action programs. Prior to joining

AT&T — formerly Ohio Bell — she taught high school mathematics.

PASSAGES

A native Clevelander, Frangos’ interest in higher education was sparked when she

attended a summer math camp at CSU as a teen. She earned a bachelor’s degree from

Baldwin Wallace University and a master’s degree from CSU, both in mathematics.

She supports CSU’s Math Corps program.

A Westlake resident, Frangos serves on the Board of Trustees of Cuyahoga Community

College and the YWCA Greater Cleveland, where she holds the position of board chair.

KRISTA FREEMAN, PHD Krista Freeman (BS, Physics Honors ’11) graduated from CSU as the University

Valedictorian in December 2011, earning a

bachelor of science (Honors) in Physics and a minor in Mathematics. While at CSU, she was an active Society of Physics Students

(SPS) president, spearheading many chapter

activities, most notably, outreach efforts at the

Campus International School, now in its eighth year. She went on to pursue her master’s and doctoral degrees in physics from Carnegie

Mellon University, where she recently defended her doctoral dissertation on the physics of viruses. Dr. Freeman is currently working

as a postdoctoral research associate at the

University of Pittsburgh, where she studies the function, structure and mechanisms of action of viral coat proteins. Dr. Freeman’s ultimate

goal of becoming a physics professor is driven

by an appreciation for the many professors who helped shape her trajectory along the way.

Dr. Freeman continues her involvement with CSU through interactive Physics Fridays

outreach lessons at the Campus International School run by SPS. She recently shared her

insights with CSU students and faculty during an invited seminar.

being the first therapist owned Medicare agency in the U.S. Missi and her husband also started Total Rehabilitation Specialists, a therapy

contract company, and created a research scholarship for the occupational therapy

students at CSU as well as the Dick Bonacci

endowment fund in the athletic department.

As a proud graduate, Missi has also committed her time to CSU. She has served as the chair

and member for the College of Sciences visiting committee, interim Masters of OT program

director and is an adjunct faculty member.

She is nationally recognized for her knowledge on health care policy, home health care and

reimbursement. She serves on several national

boards and is a consultant in the field of health care. She has received the Ohio OT Association highest honor, the Award of Merit, as well as

numerous national awards. She has published

multiple articles and chapters on home care, health care policy and ethics in the health care arena.

GEORGE B. DAVIS AWARD FOR SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY CHRISTINE D. MORAVEC, PHD Christine Moravec (PhD, Regulatory Biology ’88)

has provided outstanding service to the College and the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences (BGES) since

graduating in 1988. Recently she was integral to launching a full-time, paid internship program in which CSU undergraduates are paired with a principal investigator at Lerner Research Institute for an immersion and research experience.

Dr. Moravec is an adjunct faculty member in CSU’s BGES department, serves as head of

adjunct faculty to BGES at the Cleveland Clinic

and is a standing member of the BGES Graduate Committee on Curriculum and Academic

Standards. She also works with CSU clinical

chemistry and applied biomedical engineering students at the Cleveland Clinic.

In 34 years with the Cleveland Clinic, Dr. Moravec has earned respect in numerous positions of responsibility. She recently was promoted to

assistant dean for basic science education in

the Lerner College of Medicine, where she also serves as director of dual degree programs.

She holds a research staff appointment in

molecular cardiology and is director of the

Center for Research Education and Training, both in the Lerner Research Institute.

Dr. Moravec was included in CSU’s first group

of Fascinating Alumni in 2015 and received the Distinguished Alumni Award for the College of Sciences and Health Professions in 2008.
