Dutch researchers have developed a self-repairing coating that could also be used to eliminate the need to wash cars or remove fingerprints from touch screens – and the technology could be ready for production within six to eight years.

The team behind the coating, which was developed at the Eindhoven University of Technology, says it could be used to create a self-cleaning car that requires only the “occasional rain shower” to remove dirt. As the coating is highly water-resistant, water droplets “simply roll off the car, taking dirt with them”.

If this sounds to you a bit like another ‘snake oil’ type product then join the club. I cannot imagine any car staying clean and shiny enough to satisfy the average motorist never mind the enthusiast. I guess we will have to wait and see.

Maybe we could suggest researchers should turn their attention to the development of an anti-theft paint. Now that is a development we would all welcome. There is an article in this edition recounting the experience of one enthusiast who had a number of his treasured possessions (classic cars) stolen.

See his letter with its warning on page 23.

Anyway, I don’t know about other members, but I rather like washing my cars (emphasis on “my cars”).

In my opinion, there is no better way to get to know your car, with all its (her) little idiosyncrasies, scratches and blemishes as well as the sheer joy of admiring and caressing those seductive curves and shapes that we all admire in our Jaguars.

Yes, it sounds a little tragic I know. I suspect it is this kind of thinking and the hours I spend in the garage that prompted my wife to affectionately dub my S Type, “The Other Woman”.

On a different note, I want to thank those who have made a contribution to this magazine. Nineteen individuals, including Register Secretaries have made a contribution this month, ensuring the magazine has a wide appeal. Keep up the good work!

Letters to the Editor Hello Phil, Firstly congratulations on producing a superb (maiden) Classic Marque for the October issue. It was exactly what I envisioned 5 years ago when we started the journey!

I should explain a little further; the club had identified back in 2005 that change was necessary to ensure that we continued to grow and prosper. I was fortunate to be President during that particular period (2005 – 2009) and one of the major components of that “Revival” was to embrace technology. This necessitated rebuilding our Web site and reinventing the Classic Marque. They really go hand-in -hand. The end result financially was that fees were reduced by $10 pa and additional benefits provided.

To-date these benefits have amounted to $40,000 over the last 4 years.

Change is always a challenging process and will only proceed at an “ordained” pace. Further, it can only be achieved with the active members supporting this change and having a strong desire for their club to prosper over the long term (5 – 20 years).

This process can now be witnessed with the ACJC deliberations.

Therefore, all the Club’s previous editors, committee members and general members should stand proud of their collective achievement as it is a culmination of effort, thinking, debate and the desire to succeed.

Above all, our members have a capacity and strength of character to being the leader in our car movement.

So well done for completing that process with the October issue. I look forward to the JDCSA's continuing effort, thinking, debate, desire to succeed and ongoing leadership.

President’s Club Directory Report November 2012 A sea of Jaguars, what a spectacle! This is one of many ways of describing SA Jaguar Day, which was a great display of Jaguars and a fitting tribute to Di and her many helpers. I must especially thank Di. She put in an enormous amount of work behind the scenes to prepare for this day, which we tend to take for granted. Organising with the council, arranging food stalls, deciding on the layout for the cars, encouraging members to present their cars for the special displays. And so it goes on. I am aware of the many hours she has given to the Club to make the day a success, sleepless nights and a certain amount of stress.

One additional feature of this year’s event was the inclusion of a judged section for selected cars. The process was based on the JDCSA proposal for the National Rally, when we next host it. The intention was to gain a little practice with judging and to assess how our ideas would work. The main features were, the cars remained at their allocated positions, the point scoring was not rigid to the point of being pedantic and the concept of placing cars into decades rather than a class by model was introduced.

First impressions of the procedure are favourable, but I do look forward to member feedback. If you have any comments, please forward them to Di or to Alan Baker our Chief Judge. If you liked the judged section we will almost certainly have it again next year and “grow” it into a bigger event to better cover all decades to more closely match our vision for the National Rally.

Finally, I would like to thank Ian Webber, our newly elected Patron and his daughter, Julie for attending in the morning. Ian was keen to see the cars and to quietly learn a little more about the Club and its Members. I am sure they were both impressed with what they saw.

On a quite different matter, I have been very concerned with the number of comments made about E-

type owners not bringing their cars out in the wet weather. Each owner’s car, whatever the model, is rather special and the way it is used is the owner’s choice and should not become subject of poor taste comment. Indeed, in reality the E-typers have been very supportive of special Club events, when asked to be present. My concern, which has been in my mind for a while, was brought to a head by the anonymous verse in the last Classic Marque. In addition the same verse brought comment from a couple of members on another matter, “----the guys love a pleasant drive-------and the partners tag along doing what is right”. The JDCSA has always prided itself on being a family club since its inception so many years ago and has set out to be all inclusive, perhaps not always perfectly.

I do not wish to go down the path of political correctness, which can in itself, stifle member’s fun and enjoyment. Simply, please think about fellow member’s views and ideas and treat them with respect, even though they may be different to yours. Mutual respect is one of the keys to a happy club.

I look forward to seeing you at the November meeting.

ACJC MEETING REPORT– SEPTEMBER, 2012 The latest meeting of the delegates to the ACJC, together with the Annual General Meeting, took place on Sunday, 9th September, 2012 and here are some of the key points from those meetings.

Jaguar Australia In the absence of Kevin Goult, who was in the UK with Australian Journalists regarding the soon-to-bereleased F-Type, Andrew Chapman, Jaguar Product Manager, attended our meeting. Andrew advised that the last twelve months had been good with the TATA ownership and investment continuing to show benefits. The feeling within the organisation is akin to the highs of the 60’s when the E-Type and Mark 2 excited the world.

Technology is underpinning the changes being made with new engine plants, 24/7 manufacturing and great employment growth. The worldwide trend is towards smaller capacity, high-performance and economical engines and Jaguar are responding.

Both the 3 litre supercharged and the 2 litre petrol turbo will be in Australia at the end of this year in the XF whilst the 3 litre will go into the XJ series alongside the larger engines. It will also be available in the F-Type as an option along with the 5 litre engine.

The 2.2 litre diesel is doing well against the competitors and all this gives Jaguar a competitive start point in the $70,000 to $80,000 bracket. The XK will stay as a 5 litre engined car with several configurations including the supercharged version. The 6 speed ZF transmission will remain in place.

The F-Type will be first shown to the public at the Paris show on September 27 th and will be at the Sydney show on 18th October. The F-Type has been developed from the C-X16 concept and has been extensively tested in its camouflaged guise. It will be released as a soft top and is by all accounts a serious beast. Both the F-Type and the XF are being targeted towards the younger buyers and in this respect the Australian market is important for Jaguar worldwide.

Giving customers the option to ‘construct’ their car via the choice of many ‘customised’ options is a move which is showing benefits.

The ‘R’ Performance Academy is a worldwide initiative - driver circuit training and familiarisation. Whilst already in Europe and the USA, the first days in Australia were at Philip Island in August, and certainly fulfilled the aim of reacquainting owners with the Jaguar sporting heritage. The first intake was

Australia wide and included prospective buyers many of whom had previously done drive-days with opposition brands. More ‘R’ Academy days are planned in Australia.

Earlier this year the ACJC negotiated an arrangement with Jaguar to advertise in all Club magazines for a twelve month period and this has proceeded.

Another way in which Jaguar is supporting the Clubs.

National Rallies A Report was received re the Perth Rally held earlier this year. Whilst it was unfortunate that not many cars from the East were present, the Rally had been a success measured by the number of attendees, the events conducted and financially, generating a small surplus which has been put into the WA 2019 Rally account.

This Rally was the first for a long time held outside the traditional Easter period. Lengthy discussions have been held whether this is a desirable option.

Easter events are not cheap to run as venues charge high penalty rates and the ability to “do deals” is low. Conversely some believe that with two extra days as public holidays that is advantageous. An alternate view is that registrants usually make attendance at a National Rally part of an extended break and therefore the relevance of public holidays is not material. The Council welcomes the input of Club members in this debate.

The 2013 National Rally will be hosted by the JDCA in the seaside city, Wollongong. 2013 marks the 60th anniversary of the C-Type’s win at Le Mans using disc brakes which enabled the C-type to be the first car to exceed an average of over 100 mph for the entire race. Rally headquarters will be at the Novotel Northbeach Hotel where a very competitive room-rate, including undercover parking and breakfasts, has been negotiated. However the hotel will only guarantee rooms at this rate until 31 st January, 2013 so an early booking is imperative.

The 2014 Rally will be hosted by the JCCV whilst it is hoped that the JDCSA will host the event in 2015.

tions which take into account all aspects surrounding these valuable items.

Financial Report

Revised Concours Judging System

The Council achieved a small operating surplus for the year ended June, 2012 although the budget for 2013 indicates a small loss. Whilst costs of the meetings have been trimmed over recent years, airfares and meeting room hire continue to rise, whilst the costs for maintenance of trophies in a good state of repair is ever present.

Your Council has been cognisant of comments surrounding the scoring at the Concours events and the divergent views as to what should be done to ensure a level playing field. There is no easy answer to balancing a system that is as close to perfect as possible, fair and simple so that it encourages members who have previously felt disenfranchised to now participate. Consequently for two years a project has been underway to address the issues arising when attempting to judge cars built (using substantially differing technology) over a 75 year period. Clubs have been circulated with proposals and input sought. Divergent views still remain as to the best way to move forward but the Council has made a decision.

Privacy Policy At the time of the offer earlier this year by Jaguar of a sizeable discount to members on the purchase of a new vehicle, much of the opportunity was lost due to delays in communicating with members. Some Clubs have a policy that no personal information is to be given out notwithstanding that it might be in the interests of members to do so. It is recognised that strict controls would need to be in place but delegates have agreed to re-visit this issue with their respective Clubs to see if a policy can be developed to facilitate any future opportunities.

Independent Chairperson.

Longstanding practice has been for the office bearers of the ACJC to be elected from amongst the delegates representing the Clubs. One Club suggested that it might be beneficial to elect an independent chairperson. Whilst delegates agreed that in a perfect world this would be ideal, in the ACJC the Chairperson is not just the Chair of a meeting but also a communicator (with JLRA) and coordinator of ongoing matters. As such in-house experience and knowledge are important. The delegates had no concern that a conflict of interest arose and that separation of duties has been observed to work satisfactorily in the past.

For the judging at the National Rally 2013 a new system will be trialled. The aim of the new system is to make the process simpler and to remove the current disparities which exist between cars which were technically simpler but hand-built compared to cars which are more complex but have the benefit of computer technology in their construction. The Council recognises that any scoring system needs ongoing review but recommends to members that they embrace this development and provide constructive feedback after experiencing it in operation.

Trophies Maintaining the trophies for presentation at the National Rally is an ongoing responsibility of the ACJC. Many of the trophies have been in existence for a long time and the room for additional names of future winners is rapidly decreasing. The Council is aware some Club members are concerned that trophies do not “go home� with winners. The current policy was developed as a result of ongoing difficulties in getting back trophies from the prior year as well as avoiding any trophies going permanently missing as in the past. The Council will be considering alternatives for the future and is open to sugges-

A.C.J.C. Rick gave a very good detailed report as to where S.A. stands at the moment in relation to the transition of changes that could be in the wind. He also outlined the proposed new revelations that are on the way from Jaguar Federation. Neil outlined some of the requirements that are needed when filling out your Historic Registration forms with special reference to the Joint Membership.

He will table the questions at the next Federation meeting for clarification and report back.

Jaguar Club News Directory The Ones That Got Away Some Jaguar Concepts

Call them styling exercises, marketing tests, teasers or just the quickest way to get attention at one of the big international auto show, concept cars often offer a glimpse of what car buyers can expect to see on the road in the future. They are exciting to look at and don't fail to generate endless discussions on our forums and mailing lists....

Over the past few years, Jaguar has unveiled more concepts than in its entire history, ranging from existing models dressed up with body kits to breakthrough designs as well as fully road ready concepts to engine-less mockups... The 2000 XK180 was fully roadworthy and has been used at various Jaguar PR events, including track days and rallies. On the other hand the 2001 F-type, presented by Jaguar top brass as "a car Jaguar would be crazy not to build", remained engine-less and was cancelled.

JAGUAR F-TYPE MAKES ITS AUSTRALIAN DEBUT On Wednesday 17 October 2012, Jaguar Australia previewed the F-TYPE at an exclusive event in Sydney ahead of the Australian International Motorshow.

Ruby Rose (Australian presenter and DJ) hosted a gathering of more than 200 VIPs at Simmer on the Bay. In her most exciting DJ gig to date she curated a stunning soundscape as the background to the F-TYPE's dramatic Australian debut, set on one of Sydney's iconic piers.

Ian Callum, Jaguar's Director of Design, revealed the F-TYPE to the crowd that gathered on the harbour, all eager to see the new two-seater sports car. "The F-TYPE is instantly recognisable as a Jaguar," said Ian. "It follows the ethos and design philosophy of exciting visual architecture, with beautiful lines and pure surfaces.

What better place to preview the F-TYPE in Australia than against the iconic backdrop of the Sydney harbour."

Dodging the rain, hail and snow of the previous week, this year’s Jaguar Day was smiled upon by the Weather Gods, delivering a stunning spring day for us all to enjoy.

Over a hundred Jaguars and Daimlers, spanning build dates from the early thirties to a mere 6 weeks old were on display on Civic Park’s rolling green lawn. From the barely running to the recently restored, all cars were welcomed and enjoyed by the large numbers of participants and visitors. Di Adamson and her team have once again produced an outstanding day that was enjoyed by all. Thanks also go to Louise, Kathy, Gill and Imogen for running the regalia tent.

This year we dipped our feet back into the water by running a judged section and those cars and several others were paraded before Peter Clarke, who gave a detailed and sometimes choking (sorry Peter) commentary on a range or cars that represented Coventry’s finest.

While all of the cars were beautiful examples of their models, Karl Linder’s C and D-Types were a rare and exquisite experience; one not often seen these days.

Jaguar Day is always the pinnacle of our yearly calendar and this year’s event was the best yet. I can’t wait for next year.

Multivalve Hosting to Portland September/October 2012 Friday 28th September at 8.15AM saw 19 Multivalvers assembled with their Cats (8 Jaguars, 1 Daimler and 1 Toyota) at Myrtle Bank eagerly awaiting the start of the long weekend away to Portland despite the rather low temperature and a foreboding forecast.

All present were schooled to the very last detail of the run after receiving a 21 page, full colour itinerary meticulously researched by Peter Clarke and emailed out in advance.

On arrival at Portland all but one couple were billeted at Victoria House, a period two storey villa of nine suites built of the local dark grey stone so often seen in South West Victoria. Early arrivals took the ground floor suites leaving the upstairs ones, accessed by a quaint but very steep stairway, for the remainder. Dan and Jan Anderson set up in nearby Annesley House which they found to be very comfortable and spacious. Each night during our stay,

The first stage was the run to Keith for morning tea which allowed all to settle into touring mode and was remarkable in that John Castle in his newly acquired S Type, broke with tradition and actually kept up with the pack!

Padthaway was passed through next on our way to Naracoorte where lunch had been booked at the Kincraig Hotel. The hardier amongst the group braved the cold and blustery conditions to stroll around the town but the not so brave set out towards Casterton for a leisurely drive along tree lined back roads with little traffic, ideally suited to Jaguar cruising.

As we passed through Casterton we noticed that “Petrol Heads” were well catered for as there is a Drag Strip on a wide section of a main road on the edge of town, obviously well used and set up with temporary crowd protection barriers.

Happy Hour was held in the elegant lounge room in Victoria House, cosy with a roaring log fire, but of course noisy as are all such social gatherings enjoyed by our Club members. Dinner that evening was held in the bistro at the Richmond Henty hotel, (This report continued on page 26)

There is a rumour going around that there will be a special event in Mid January 2013.

A one day event, we believe, aimed at mustering as many XJ Series 1 Jaguars as possible in one place.

Probably taking the format of a Sunday run in the country for lunch somewhere.

Obviously we will need to track down the source of this rumour and get full details to all our Series 1 owners.

But for now feel free to spread the rumour as far as possible.

Of course we want all other club members who don’t have the pleasure of owning an XJ Series 1 to feel welcome to join in the fun.

The New Event Area. Echunga Recreation Ground.

Where? Between the School and the Golf Club at the Echunga end of Echunga Road which runs from the centre of Hahndorf to Echunga.

What is it like? This is a multi purpose sports area including tennis courts, net ball courts and two Ovals end to end for Football or Cricket. These playing areas are surrounded with various types and quantities of Australian trees and scrub. “All British Day Australiana”?

Who are our hosts? The local sporting clubs and service groups are the occupiers of this Mount Barker Council owned land. Our huge off site Public Parking area, adjacent to the Recreation Grounds, is land owned by the Echunga Golf Club who have kindly made it available to us.

Will there be catering? The local sporting and service Clubs will be doing the catering for the event. We are planning a large outdoor eating area attached to the Club Rooms plus food stalls alongside the second Oval. There is a large club lounge area in the Club Rooms where there is seating and tables with a Bar at one end for those who might like a small drink with their lunch.

Will there be a market or similar activity? Moves are in progress to have a Country market within the actual Recreation Grounds which we will combine with our usual event associated traders.

Children’s Entertainment. The Zoo, Face painting, Punch and Judy and the school is arranging for a Jumping Castle.

Entries. November 30th postmark will be the cut off date. No late entries will be accepted at all.

All entries received after this date will be refused and returned to the sender.

Entries received before November 10th will go into a lucky draw for 3 prizes of free entry to the 2013 All British Day valued at $15 each.

Members noted with approval the new look Classic Marque and were reminded that the ongoing success of CM will rely on the submission of letters, technical articles and reports of events.

ACJC: Recent discussions have been encouraging.

Jaguar Australia: A recent report suggested that Jaguar generally is in good shape compared with some of its competitors.

Air conditioning technical talk. Four people expressed interest in the talk now planned for early 2013.

Peter outlined arrangements proposed for the Club’s December general meeting. 20 register members said that they will attend.

Events: Members were reminded of final arrangements for Jag day.

Updated Register contact list will be circulated by email.

Peg reminded members that the Register end of year lunch would be on Sunday 2 December. It was agreed that some Register funds would be used to purchase meat.

A Personal Request and a Warning from a Fellow Enthusiast Dear Car Club / Spares Supplier / Fellow Enthusiast, I am writing to you to let as many people know as possible about the theft of my Jaguars and Humber car from Ferntree Gully, Victoria. I would expect the cars or parts would be offered for sale eventually and if anyone out there can help me locate my vehicles, I would be most grateful and gladly pay a substantial reward.

I have listed the story below for car clubs as I hope this could be put into the clubs magazine not only to provide assistance to myself but also to advise others that your cars are not always safe, and if you think your car is so rare that no one would possibly steal it, there are obviously people out there who don't care.

BEWARE IT MAY NOT BE THERE! Keeping a small cachet of classic cars in a locked garage is not as safe as one thinks. The near 'terminal' 1950 Humber Tickford convertible has rested in its garage for the last 35 years and needs major restoration.

Over the years the Humber has gained a few bed mates being a Jaguar Mk.II with a hot Ford V8, the Jag being in good order but needing a rest. Joining the Jag soon after was the older Mk I Jag with body and mechanicals fully restored and awaiting my retirement to finish it. To compliment this trio was another Jaguar Mk II mint rolling body shell was also crammed into the garage.

Recently we decided to renovate the house and I left the cars in the padlocked metal garage. There was no one living in the house at the time. Everything was OK when I visited a coupe of weeks ago, then a

couple of days ago I discovered all the cars were gone.

This must of been a mammoth undertaking to sort out the cars (flat tires etc) and to load them would have taken a team of blokes a full day. I have chassis numbers etc and if any fellow enthusiasts knows or hears anything please contact me or Knox Police (senior constable Church) as I believe the cars will be offered for sale or broken up into bits.



Humber 1950 Tickford Convertible, needs major restoration, spare rolling chassis and body panels. Color is pale blue (this is 1 of 2 in Australia)  Jaguar Mk I sedan in grey primer, restored body shell with rebuilt 3.4L and 4spd, there is no interior or instruments or doors (these are safely somewhere else) the car has bolt on wire wheels  Jaguar Mk II sedan, white with a Ford 289 V8/ auto trans. Car has excellent red vinyl interior and is lowered. Previous Victorian reg 69-309  Jaguar Mk II sedan, charcoal metallic grey, rolling body shell (no interior, engine or transmission) with new suspension and wiring.

It is a 1969 series 2 red with black leather interior and has been done from the ground up, The engine has been done to VSE2 standards with all parts being replaced with new. Sounds great and goes well and I am very pleased with the performance.

The Cat’s Giggle An avid duck hunter was in the market for a new bird dog. His search ended when he found a dog that could actually walk on water to retrieve a duck.

He decided to try to break the news to a friend of his, a pessimist by nature, and invited him to hunt with him and his new dog. As they waited by the shore, a flock of ducks flew by.

They fired, and a duck fell. The dog responded and jumped into the water. The dog, however, did not sink but instead walked across the water to retrieve the bird, never getting more than his paws wet.

The friend saw everything but did not say a single word. On the drive home the hunter asked his friend, "Did you notice anything unusual about my dog?" "I sure did," responded his friend. "He can't swim."

A senior member of the JDCSA drove his brand new Jaguar XK convertible out of Solitaire. Taking off up the freeway he floored it to 100kph, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.

"Amazing!" he thought as he flew towards Murray Bridge enjoying pushing the pedal to the metal even more. Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw a police car behind him, blue lights flashing and siren blaring. "I can get away from him - no problem," thought the elderly nutcase as he floored it to 150kph, then 180kph then 240kph. Then he thought, "What on earth am I doing? I'm too old for this nonsense."

So he pulled over to the hard shoulder and waited for the police car to catch up with him. Pulling in behind him, the police officer walked to the driver's side of the Jag, looked at his watch and said, "Sir, my shift ends in 10 minutes. Today is Friday and I'm off for the weekend. If you can give me a reason why you were speeding that I've never heard before, I'll let you go."

The old man looked seriously at the policeman and replied, "Years ago, my wife ran off with a policeman. I thought you were bringing her back."

When asked by a patrol officer, "Do you know you were speeding?" An 83-year-old gentleman talked himself out of a ticket by stating, "Yes, but I have to get to where I am going quickly before I for-

MEMBER’S PRIDE (Ride) My interest in jags was first spurned back in the early eighties when I was privileged to be able to drive and take a long trip or two in a 1975 series 2 sedan. This trip had left an indelible imprint in my mind of what the engineering of a jag could do. This particular car was only about 7 years old and would purr away all day on what we now classify as “very high speeds” I was to learn for a jag this was just normal and it was over thirty years ago.

At this time in life the purchase of such a late model was a little out of my reach but my enthusiasm to purchase even a 1965 to 1968 model was constantly prompted by a work college who had one. So “to own a jaguar” was put on the bucket list of things to do..

Like all of us life continues on and the kids came and went. Then three plus years ago Fran and I decided to become SKI’s (Spend The Kids Inheritance) and I was to start getting rid of things from the bucket list.

So the search for a series 2 started. It was going to be a tough ask as I didn’t have a garage or a workshop, to do basic repairs and maintenance, so a non resto was to be the only sensible way to go. We looked but nothing was coming onto the market. Having given up on the pre 1978 and the ability to historically register a vehicle, we ventured into a 1996 model the very last of the true 4.0 lt in line sixes.

This was to be short lived as a station wagon was now needed in life and poor old “JJ” as she had been affectionately called, had to go..

Mean while we would still keep looking for that illusive series 2. We didn’t have to wait long this time around as the Jaguar god was now smiling on me and a 1978 series 2 came onto the market that ticked most of the boxes of what we needed.

Thus is the story of SJA-699 affectionately called “Lisa Jay”. Her name came about by chance one day when I was inspecting the door trims and other interior panels I noticed that the workers had placed their initials/girlfriends / wives / female names on the inside of the panels. The first two inspection panels that I took off had the names of Lisa and Jay...

Thus Lisa Jay was born in June 1978 Coventry England Unfortunately unto British-Leyland parents, that promptly shipped her to the great southern land of free settlement, Adelaide.

Her formal delivery was on July 7 1978 to a Dr Ian Clarke Esq. of Woodforde. It is believed that she remained with the Clarke family for at least 27 years where upon like many children they feel the need to move on or persuaded to move out. Lisa Jay then went country but only found herself held captive indoors in a shed at Stockwell.

On August 4 this year Lisa Jay found a new and happy home with Steve and Frances Arthur, and the last few years don’t appear to have been too bad for her with only a few ailments to fix.

She is an ‘all original’ un restored, squadron blue in colour with matching interior, 4.2 litre six cylinder sedan, having only travelled 133 thousand kilometres.

(Multivalve Run Report continued from page 16) a short but freezing walk downhill from Victoria House.

After a hearty cooked breakfast next morning we headed off along the coast road towards Port Fairey, stopping off on the way to “The Crags”, a spectacular rocky out crop with glorious coastal views enjoyed by all despite the gale that was blowing. Following this and a tour of the sights of Port Fairey a delightful local eatery with a Turkish theme was found for coffee and specialty delicacy’s.

From Port Fairey we drove to Warrnambool and straight to Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and Lady Bay Lighthouse museum complex for lunch in the village tea rooms served by local ladies in period costume. The sandwiches, cakes and scones were made on site and were delicious. Our Guide, again in period costume was very knowledgeable in informing us of the local history and the rigors of travelling under sail. Her talk was followed by a, “Shipwrecked Sound and Laser show”, and a stroll back through time around the authentic seaport village.

Following the tour, those keen for an early start to happy hour set off back to Portland while three couples keen to see all on the itinerary stopped off at the scheduled Tower Hill point of interest. This ancient volcanic crater is spectacular with plentiful wild life including kangaroos and emus roaming and Koalas to be seen in trees adjoining the many picnic areas. It was interesting to see many of the normally dry large expanses of grassland had become vast lakes following recent rains.

Dinner that night back in Portland was at the Royal Hotel, again just a short walk from Victoria House.

We had the dining room almost to ourselves with the result that the “Under Sixties” table became rather raucous; especially the traditionally noisy when imbibed Tony Human, Marg Brindal, Jon Castle and eventually all at the table. The more genteel of us quietly sipped our upmarket choice of reds and enjoyed our selection of fine food and stimulating conversation – well that’s our story!!

We departed Portland on Sunday morning and drove west on the Portland/Nelson Road through

pine forests and the Lower Glenelg National Park with, at last, the sun occasionally breaking through.

Crossing back into S A we headed for Port Macdonnell and the Cape Northumberland scenic drive past the 1858 historic lighthouse monument and then onto Feasts Motor Museum. This museum owned by Donald and Sheila Feast has all sorts of weird memorabilia but has as its base all manner of Chrysler vehicles, in particular early S and R Valliant’s. It would seem they have almost cornered the market of these models with at least 15 of each from unrestored to many fine examples of the cars in pristine condition.

Moving on we drove to Mount Gambier and lunch at Sorrentos Café opposite the refurbished Riddock Art Gallery which in itself is worth a visit as is the adjoining famous historic Cave Garden.

Our last overnight stay was to be at “The Barn” just to the south of Mount Gambier. This five star complex is known for its superb cuisine, especially local raised beef and a fine wine cellar. Accordingly our evening meal was magnificent as were the motel suites.

After a very pleasant breakfast we set off for Robe where lunch was at the Robe Hotel on the seafront overlooking glorious Guichen Bay after which our eventful organised tour was complete and each was to arrange their own way home.

All agreed it had been a great four days together and were indebted to Peter Clarke for the time and effort he had put in to ensure all went to plan and was so enjoyable.

-Club T E C Directory H FILESWarning! – Ethanol Fuel mix A Frightening Story from NSW September 07 was a disastrous month for Don Anderson and his XJS – it caught fire!

Luckily for Don, he was just pulling into his driveway, so was able to put the fire out without major damage, but it did take quite a bit of effort and late nights to rectify the problem, and make sure it couldn’t happen again.

On discussing Don’s fire situation, it came to light that this under bonnet fire problem has affected a number of people here in Newcastle and Sydney from the car club movement.

What happened in Don’s case (and to others) was one of his fuel line hoses went soft and mushy and split from the fuel pressure. Don had replaced all his lines as a mater of course with new lines except one where he used some new/old stock. This was the line that failed.

It is our opinion from experience, and talking to fuel hose suppliers such as Earl’s, that any fuel hose fitted to cars or sold before 2000 (or later in some cases) is not acceptable for ethanol fuel.

Ethanol fuel mix to be flagged as rotting is confirmed

Official test results reveal the damage caused by high concentrations of Ethanol. At 20 per cent - a blend widely available in NSW - ethanol was found to cause a variety of "performance and durability concerns" in trials by the Orbital engine company for the federal Environment Department.

The trials showed, however, that 10 per cent blends had no substantial impact on engine performance or operability apart from slight carburettor damage.

If you are using stainless braid hose, use Teflon/SS rather than Rubber/SS but be aware that the end fittings are different in style.

If fitting push on hose to HE engines use only good quality imperial hose ie Gates, Using a lesser quality may cause leaking due to bore size & tolerance as the sealing of the hose relies on the reinforcement weave and bore.

This is only our opinion, but we would strongly recommend that any cars you have from before this period, check the fuel hoses, and replace any with new fuel hose that is rated to take ethanol fuel.

Reading the Date Code on your Tyres Old tyres on classic cars can look OK but may be well beyond the safety limit. Even if the outside appearance of the tyre is good internally there may be real problems lurking.

The Date of tyre manufacture is the last digits of the DOT Code found on the sidewall of the tyre often on the inside. The code is pretty simple. The three-digit code was used for tyres manufactured before 2000.

The study's findings reinforce the argument of engine makers, the car and boat industries, and motoring and consumer groups that ethanol should be capped at 10 per cent.

So for example a tyre manufactured before 1990, e.g. in 1986, would have the following code. 1 7 6 meaning it was manufactured in the 17th week of the 6th year of the decade ie in this case the 80s.

The study turned up problems including stalling, a rise in exhaust gas temperature, increased carbon deposits on pistons, corrosion of metallic engine components and damage to plastic and rubber hoses.

For tyres manufactured in the 90's, the same code holds true but there is a little triangle after the DOT code.

Years ago, car makers told the Government that unless it limited ethanol content they would refuse to honour warranties on vehicles run on blends above 10per cent.

So for this example, a tyre manufactured in the 17th week of 1996 would have the code 1 7 6  After 2000, the code was switched to a 4-digit code.

Same rules apply, so for example 3 0 0 3 means the tyre was manufactured in the 30th week of 2003.
