Cover Story The Jaguar XJ (X300) is a luxury saloon manufactured by Jaguar Cars between 1994 and 1997. It was the first XJ produced entirely under Ford ownership, and can be considered an evolution of the outgoing XJ40 generation . In this edition of Classic Marque we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the X300.

Club Directory PRESIDENT’S REPORT Who would believe it is nearly 12 months since I stepped into the role of President First, I must thank our various committees for their support and dedication over the past year. Thank you also to my family for their support over the last few years in my various roles within JDCSA. We are grateful for the many members who have organised an event, attended an event or contributed to the Classic Marque.

Our change in General Meeting format with Guest Speakers has been well received. We need to get feedback on what it is you would like to hear about. It does not have to be Jaguar related. We have had a diverse range of speakers including our Patron, Ian Webber. Ian and his wife Chris have attended many of our events and are valued participants.

I believe our Club has been a pioneer within the Jaguar Drivers Clubs. We were the first club to go electronic and we have led a big change in the direction of National Rallies.

At the last ACJC meeting it was confirmed that we are to host the National Rally in 2018. Although National Rallies will occur annually, concours events will be held every second year.

Our challenge for the future and beyond is not only to maintain but grow our membership.

Peter Holland has launched a project called “Pete’s Pet Project” which is to grow our younger membership to help ensure the continued growth of the club well into the future. If you have any ideas, Peter is always happy to listen.

Our SA Jag Day planning is coming along well thanks to Phil Prior and his committee. Combining Cats and Cans with this event will not only benefit the club, but benefit those who the Salvation Army works tirelessly for.

In closing I would like to encourage you all to contribute or participate in any way as this is what makes our club great.

The Thrill of the Chase!

I’m back! Or maybe you did not even notice there was no editorial last month?

For the past nine months I have been in the market for another Jaguar. I spend many hours on the internet searching for what might be the car for me. It has reminded me of some of the important things to keep in mind and some of the pitfalls to be avoided in an exercise like this.

In my opinion the four most important things to do are as follows: 1.

What do you want? A car that needs major rebuilding and restoration with the inevitable dollars that go with that territory? Or do you want to buy a car that someone else has thrown their hard earned cash at?

Your choice really. But you should determine this.

2.

Do your research and know what is available and what the right price is for the model and condition you want. Too many mistakes are made when you have done all your research on a particular model etc. and get swept off your feet by something completely different. If you are shopping for apples, buy apples. If an orange takes your fancy you best do some quick research before buying.

3.

Keep your budget in mind. Now this will be on the one hand an absolute amount you want to spend for the perfect example. Or what you should pay for that project car you can’t refuse. It will always be a mine field.

4.

Don’t talk too much about what you are up to at home, it is not worth the pain. A wise man once told me it far easier to seek forgiveness than ask permission. After all it is an investment! (LOL) Now what are some of the pitfalls to be avoided?

Never, never, never, be in a hurry! The biggest let down is to open up the internet a week after you have made your purchase only to see that perfect car that you thought would never be for sale. Take the time to take the time.

2.

Never take much notice of how the car looks in the photos. Photos lie! The car with the fantastic paint job can turn out to be a disaster. If the car is photographed in a pool of water you can be sure the seller wants to get a shine on the duco finish.

3.

Don’t make your mind up too quickly once you have a car in mind. Lose some sleep over it first. Spend a lot of time on the phone speaking to the seller. Ask for more photos and written evidence for claims made.

Eventually after many conversations the real truth will be revealed and more importantly you will know soon enough if the seller is being truthful.

4.

Don’t think you have to do this on your own. Other club members can be of huge assistance and always love to help you spend your money. With the last two cars I have purchased interstate members of interstate Jaguar clubs have been most willing to help. Don’t be afraid to ask for help!

Well, having said all that I have just purchased another car.

I think I have followed my own advice, although it is hard to keep the emotions in check completely.

I did know what I wanted. I did have a budget. I took my time (approx. 9 months). There was not a lot of talk at home until we got to the pointy end. Interstate club members were most helpful. I asked lots of questions and received lots of photos and written evidence. This car has already been named ‘Clayton’ by Suzanne. ‘The car you buy when you are not buying a car.”

I get almost as much pleasure from “the thrill of the chase”, as I do from ownership.

Inspection requirements for Historic Registrations have changed as most will be well aware.

It is now the owners responsibility to have their historically registered vehicle inspected every three years in addition to the signing of a Statutory Declaration annually.

This means that by June 2015 you do need to have your vehicle inspected by one of the club’s authorised inspectors.

The inspector will sign your log book to indicate that you have complied with this requirement.

This is a very simple inspection and can be done at regular club outings by arrangement with one of our authorised inspectors. Each Register has appointed inspectors and a list 5

Jaguar news Jaguar X300 Celebrates 20 years 1994 - 2014 The Jaguar XJ (X300) is a luxury saloon manufactured by Jaguar Cars between 1994 and 1997. It was the first XJ produced entirely under Ford ownership, and can be considered an evolution of the outgoing XJ40 generation.

Like all previous XJ generations, it features the Jaguar independent rear suspension arrangement. The design of the X300 placed emphasis on improved build quality, improved reliability, and a return to traditional Jaguar styling elements.

At the car's launch in October 1994 at the Paris Motor Show, Jaguar marketing material made use of the phrase "New Series XJ" to describe the X300 models. The X300 series represented the result of a ÂŁ200 million facilities renewal program by Ford. The program introduced state-ofthe-art automated body welding robots manufactured by Nissan, and was intended to show the future direction of the British auto industry.

To honour Jaguar's achievements, Queen Elizabeth II visited the Browns Lane factory in December 1994, and ordered a British Racing Green X305 Daimler Double Six for her personal use. This was the Queen's second visit to Jaguar's Coventry factory since 1956.

Aesthetically, the X300 received several updates in the design refresh led by Geoff Lawson in 1991. The mostly flat bonnet of the XJ40 was replaced with a fluted, curvaceous design that accentuated the four separate round headlamps.

Rear wings were reshaped to accommodate the new wraparound rear light clusters. Also, the separate black-rubber bumper bar of the XJ40 is gone and replaced with a fully integrated body-coloured bumper.

The Jaguar "leaper" hood mascot was installed only on cars for non-European markets.

The interior of the X300 was similar to that found in the XJ40, with some revisions. The seats were updated to have a more rounded profile, wood trim was updated with bevelled edges, and the steering wheel was redesigned.

Early X300 cars were built without a front passenger glovebox, due to space constraints caused by the introduction of a front-passenger airbag.

Jaguar's V12 engine and AJ6 inline-six (AJ16) engine were

both available in various X300 models, although they received significant updates. Both engines were fitted with distributorless electronic engine management systems.

The V12's new management system was designed by Nippon Denso. The top aluminium cover in the engine's valley was redesigned to house two packs of three coils each, with each coil having two high-tension terminals for a total of twelve. These coilpacks were driven by two Denso ignition modules, which are very similar to Ford EDIS-6 units. The crankshaft in the V12 was switched from a forging to a chill casting. A visibly significant chromed pipe connecting the left and the right banks of the V12 in the XJ40 platform (intended to vent and route the crankcase blow-by gas to the intake plenum) was changed with the introduction of the X300 to an almost invisible design at the top center of the engine underneath a plastic cover that also hides fuel rails and coilpacks.

Magnesium-alloy valve covers and revised pistons featured in the engine, which was given the designation AJ16. It was found in 4.0 L supercharged form in the XJR. The normally aspirated six-cylinder X300 cars used either a ZF four-speed automatic gearbox (4HP-22 on the 3.2 L and 4HP-24 on the 4.0 L), or a Getrag 290 five-speed manual.

The 4HP-22 automatic is mechanically controlled while the 4HP-24 is electronically controlled, allowing 4.0-litre models to offer 'normal' and 'sport' modes on a switch by the gear lever. This switch is replaced with a blanking plate on the 3.2 L. The supercharged six-cylinder in the XJR was normally built with the optional GM 4L80-E four-speed automatic and very few XJRs were ordered with the standard specification Getrag 290. All V12-equipped cars were built with the GM 4L80-E automatic. In certain markets, such as North America, no manual gearbox was offered.

The X300 was the first XJ to be affected directly by Jaguar's takeover (in 1990) by the Ford Motor Company. According to David Versical of Automotive News, Ford's influence was evident more in terms of "product development processes than its parts bin". However, Versical added that the XJ's new "traction control system came via Ford's Mondeo program" and it also featured "a Nippondenso air conditioner sourced through Ford's purchasing channels."

The X300 was latterly available in both short- and longwheelbase body styles and in various trim levels. Some markets had a limited selection of X300 models or features.

For example, the North American XJ6 was only available with the 4.0 L engine, and all cars sold there were equipped with alloy wheels, a leather interior, and air conditioning.

North America did not receive the Sovereign, Sport, Executive, or Century models, nor was a manual transmission offered.

Power folding mirrors were standard in Japan and optional in all other markets except the USA.

2. GENERAL BUSINESS: Des Brown had previously mentioned problems with the CM retaining some out-dated information. Peter Holland advised that the primary web-site data was being corrected.

Ross Rasmus has sold his SS1 after 30 years. The car remains in SA & the new owner has requested assistance re transferring the vehicle under the Historic Registration system.

Ross gave an interesting talk about his 3-year project to sell the SS1 The Qld. Classic Jaguar Enthusiasts Club inc. July Newsletter includes a 5 page feature on the first SS cars.

Ross Gogler returned the mounted SS Border Run Trophy for the Most Enthusiastic Jaguar Owner for the Secretary to take to Loxton.

An extract from JDCSA November1988 issue of the CM being the ‘SS Register Report’ was tabled & included the following item- “Did you know that the JDC has amongst its members 28 Mk5, 6 Mk4, 3&1/2lt; 5 Mk4 2&1/2lt; 8 Mk4 1&1/2lt; 3 SS100; 2 SS saloons and 2 SS1 saloons.”

August 14, 2014 – Last night,Jaguar Land Rover debuted three vehicles at an exclusive event held at the Beach and Tennis Club in Pebble Beach, Calif., including the new 550hp Range Rover Sport SVR, the U.S. production version of the Jaguar FTYPE Project 7 and the prototype of the new Jaguar Lightweight E-Type.

Joe Eberhardt, President & CEO, Jaguar Land Rover North America, opened the event before John Edwards, Managing Director of Special Operations, Jaguar Land Rover, and Director of Design, Ian Callum, took the stage to globally unveil the Range Rover Sport SVR and the U.S. production version of the F-TYPE Project 7.

All three vehicles are from the Jaguar Land Rover newly created Special Operations division which, under the leadership of Managing Director, John Edwards, will focus on designing and engineering high specification vehicles, bespoke commissions, heritage products and branded goods.

The Jaguar F-TYPE Project 7 and Range Rover Sport SVR are both from Special Vehicle Operations – the engineering and vehicle division of Special Operations – while the new Lightweight E-Type is the first recreation from the Special Operation Jaguar Heritage team.

The Range Rover Sport SVR is the first Land Rover vehicle to wear the new high-performance SVR badge, and is the brands most dynamically focused vehicle Land Rover has ever produced.

The Range Rover Sport SVR features a 550hp 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine capable of accelerating from 0-60 mph in 4.5 seconds with a top speed of 162 mph* on track. Pricing for the Range Rover Sport SVR will start at $110,475.

The first recreation from the Special Operation Jaguar Heritage team, the prototype of the Lightweight E-Type, was hand-built by skilled Jaguar craftsmen in a new facility at Browns Lane in England. Six customer Lightweight E-Type vehicles will be built and each will be assigned one of the remaining chassis numbers originally allocated in 1963 to the intended 18-car 'Special GT E-Type' project, of which just 12 were built. In celebration of the recreated Lightweight E-Type vehicles, Jaguar has also furthered its relationship with the Bremont Watch Company. Bremont will create six bespoke ‘E-Type’ watches, each of which will be offered to customers of the six new Lightweight E-Type vehicles.

The U.S. production version of the F-TYPE Project 7 is an all-aluminum, fully road-legal two-seater roadster with bespoke carbon-fiber aerodynamic aids and is the pinnacle of the F-TYPE range. Named to reflect seven Jaguar overall wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, F-TYPE Project 7 is inspired by the Jaguar D-Type which celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. The F-TYPE Project 7 will come to market with a starting price of $165,000*** and will be available in two standard color schemes – Glacier White, a metallic white which is the feature color for the model and Ultra Blue, a metallic take on French Racing Blue and the signature color of the Jaguar Land Rover SVO team. British Racing Green, Ultimate Black and Caldera Red will also be available as optional upgrades.

The cats giggle My neighbour was working in his yard when he was

startled by a late model car that came crashing through his hedge and ended up on his front lawn.

He rushed to help an elderly lady driver out of the car and sat her down on a lawn chair. He said with excitement, "You appear quite elderly to be driving."

"Well, yes, I am," she replied proudly. "I'll be 97 next month, and I am now old enough that I don't even need a driver's license any more."

"You don't need a driver's license any more?!?"

"That's right! The last time I went to my doctor, he examined me and asked if I had a driver's license. I told him 'yes' and handed it to him. He took scissors out of the drawer, cut the license into pieces, and threw them in the waste basket, saying, 'You won't need this any more'. So I thanked him and left!"

Gotten Old! I've sure gotten old!

I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, new knees, fought prostate cancer and diabetes.

I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts.

Have bouts with dementia.

Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore.

Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92.

Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's license.

In 1969 voted the best car in the world. Yes it has to go, no garage space, unfortunately and reluctantly this early Series 1, Manual Overdrive car that I just love driving needs to be sold. Most people in the club will know the car but the following information will be helpful.

The vehicle is in excellent condition, with a rich burgundy paint job completed by a previous owner, chrome wheels, delightful refurbished biscuit interior, new headlining and new webasto sunroof by the previous owner. Mechanically everything is in order and it performs beautifully on the road.

Since my ownership, over the past few years I have, replaced the LH fuel tank, installed new front springs, refurbished the interior, including seats, carpets, refurbished timber dash etc. replaced the inner RHS rear hub seal, fitted four new correct size whitewall tyres, upgraded the exhaust system with new rear mufflers (it sounds great), fitted chrome wheel arch trim, replaced the front bumper, attached dual gold pin striping, upgraded the boot lining and more.

A used under dash AC evaporator (see pics) with central vent/outlets has been installed. (Supplied with the car but not yet installed is a new 7 series Sanden Compressor, a new condenser, and new dryer plus double pulley and brackets etc to complete the AC system) I want to first offer the car for sale to club members before it is advertised publicly elsewhere. Swan Hill 15–17 August With the XJ, Mk10, 420G Register

It was a beautiful Friday morning and 21 people joined the XJ, 420G, Mk10 Register’s week end run to Swan Hill.

The meeting place was 34 km’s up the freeway at 8.00am.

Most of us were there on time with just a few sleepy heads.

Andrew and Milli Costi went flying past as if we were standing still. (Hang on – we were standing still!) They rang back

to say they would meet us further up the road as the Mk IV was not as fast as she used to be. The convoy then made its way through Pinnaroo, Lameroo and Ouyen for lunch.

The Mk IV got as far Lameroo and decided it had had enough and wanted to go home.

After the rest of us arrived in Swan Hill and settled into the lovely Big 4 Riverside Caravan Park on the River. Then after a short R & R we boarded the bus that Bob had arranged to take us to the Murray Downs Golf and Country 19

Club for a magnificent buffet dinner. The race to see who could eat the most was a tie between Steve Arthur and Dave Bicknell.

Saturday was a big day, starting off with a big breakfast. I don’t know how they did it, but Steve and Dave were first there as well.

So then, into the cars and off to the Burrabliss Tea Rooms on Lake Boga for morning tea where we learnt how to grow sheep for the top end wool market.

Then, just up the road was the Catalina Flying Boat Museum. This was a real eye opener. Lake Boga was used during the Second World War to service and repair the Catalina’s. The men who flew these magnificent machines would tell you, I’m sure, that they were not built for comfort. I think I can best explain it this way, ‘if you hop out of your Jaguar and go for a ride in a wheel barrow’. I think this museum and the communications bunker next to it were worth the trip alone.

It was then back to the caravan park and into the Pioneer Settlement, which is right next door. Walking through the settlement actually bought back a lot of childhood memories for most of us.

Saturday night we all took a short walk into the settlement again, but this time to board the Paddle Steamer “Pyap” for a one and a half hour cruise with non stop finger food.

Darryl Leyton won the food prize this time as Steve and Dave had only just finished lunch and afternoon tea in the settlement.

Sunday morning, after another large breakfast we all decided to point the Jags homeward. Rob Smith put $30 of fuel in his XKR for the 600km journey home. He must be getting about 90m.p.g. Not bad, these super cars of today.

From there until Adelaide it was a matter of finding a food stop that was open.

In summary, everyone arrive home safely after having a most enjoyable and informative weekend.

All except Andrew and Milli. The MkIV decided it wanted to come home a day earlier, feeling a little sore and home sick.

Member’s Pride A love affair with an unusual beginning It all started with my younger brother acquiring a project car a Jaguar MK VII in Western Australia and as I am a motor mechanic about to retire he suggested he send the motor and gearbox over to SA for me to recondition in my spare time (ha ha).

Well it arrived and needed a lot of work.

As I stripped the motor down, I thought it might be of some value to check various forums on the net to find any peculiar quirks or faults associated with this model and of course where to find a good supply of parts for the task.

Whilst browsing the net, in particular Ebay I found this 1990 Daimler being offered by a dealer south of Sydney at a reasonable price. And thought it looked a classy eye catcher.

After a lot of correspondence I reluctantly paid a deposit in return for which he would fit 2 new tyres and submit the car for a road worthy inspection and register it for 3 months.

He posted me the report, a clean sheet. So the next step was hop on a plane just prior to Christmas 2012 and then a

2hour train trip south to Albion Park.

The dealer picked me up from the station and took me to his yard. There it was and after my full inspection and a consequent test drive, I fell even more in love.

All the books and service records and the complete tool kit were there. The previous owner was obviously fussy.

After signing transfers and taking position of the rego papers, oh and of course parting with my cash I drove out of the yard. step2: first to the nearest servo to fill with fuel some lunch (I was starving as it was 4.30pm and I hadn’t eaten since 6am on the flight over).

Next program the TomTom sat nav for the trip home along with documenting times, kilometres and locations on the long trip home.

Winding through Macquarie’s Pass the handling and power impressed me.

Onto the Hume highway and here was the chance to test 22

the cruise control, fantastic it even braked to maintain an equal speed downhill, all that with a return of 9.5l per100km, I’m impressed even more.

As I crossed the border into Victoria, perhaps a few hours rest wouldn’t go astray.

Wife Elly rang on my progress and insisted I book into a motel for some rest.

Why waste money on a motel when this car with plush leather seats has a perfectly comfortable back seat. 31/2 hours alongside the river Murray near Tooleybuc.

The kookaburras woke me so on we go to Ouyen where there is a nice bakery for breakfast, or so I thought, they had changed hands and no longer bake on the premises.

Oh well go on without breakfast to Geranium for some fuel, to my surprise the proprietor owns a xj series 3 which he just had painted in exactly the same colour as mine and of course was very happy to tell me all about it.

When I got home, my thoughts were that Elly might still prefer the later model Fairlane, but how wrong can you be.

She has decided this is her car now, except for when it needs maintenance.

Speaking of maintenance, all I have done in the last 12 months is replaced the shocker bushes, a new rack and pinion seal and fitted standard rear springs to compensate the removal of the self levelling system.

So to sum it all up after 40 or so years as a Ford fanatic I am now converted even to the point of joining the Jaguar drivers club of SA to share and compare notes with fellow enthusiasts and enjoy outings with members with similar interests.

Member’s Pride “ . . A moving work of art . . . “

She was a moving work of art and I loved her, but before I even became used to her my husband was already eyeing off a more recent model. This time it was a 2007 S Type Luxury model with all the bells and whistles. In 2013 he found it online, so before I knew it he was jetting off to Melbourne to check it out and hey presto he bought it.

My Love affair with Jaguars, started when I was about 8 or 9 years old, my next door neighbour (John) had a cream Mark 2. The Mark 2 was, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful cars that I had ever seen. Every now and then I could sit in her and I would dream of owning one.

Out went the old and in with the new however I made him promise that he was not going to sell this one until I was ready. Once again I have that sinking feeling as he has started showing a lot of interest in the new XE due for release in 2015.

But this time the battle lines have been drawn and I am standing firm.

As the poor, maligned husband my only comment is that I do have a VERY BIG ERASER. Jim Komaromi.

Jumping ahead a few decades or so and I started seeing the S types on the road and once again my love affair with the Jaguar was re-awakened. At the time (2010) we had a “brick on wheels” a BMW 5 series, which suited my husband better than it did me. Towards the end of 2010 I found a 2003 S Type and I finally got him to try it out and surprise, surprise he felt comfortable driving it. Finally we purchased a car which we both liked and my childhood dream had come true.
