Club torque PRESIDENT’S REPORT We’ve had our AGM and the only change to the executive is Rob Loffler joining us as XK, 7, 8, 9 Register Secretary. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Robin Ide for his contributions in this role over the last few years and welcome Rob Loffler to this role.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of two valued Club members, Martin O’Dea, and Digby Thomas. Both have been great supporters of our Club and a friend to its many members. The club extends its condolences to Martin and Digby’s families.

McLaren Vale Vintage and Classic have offered us first choice of location for next year’s event. We have chosen Penny’s Hill Winery and are looking forward to a great day.

Closer to hand, our next big event is SA JAG Day. Plans seem to be well in hand thanks to our subcommittee headed up by Phil Prior. They have arranged for a very interesting range of special interest vehicles to be on display.

Don’t forget to our CATS & CANS Annual Charity event on the day. Please help out if you can.

It was interesting hearing of other situations when the Salvation Army are on hand. Rob Loffler told us of fighting bush fires with the CFS and when they had a break at 3 am. in the morning, there were the Salvation Army serving meals and drinks to hundreds of fire fighters.

A representative of the Salvation Army, Linda Goed will be the guest speaker for our General Meeting next Tuesday.

Linda is the Manager of Fundraising & Community Support Services at the Ingle Farm Salvation Army Corp. and has many first hand experiences to share on just how much contributions of food items such as those we will collect on Jag Day are appreciated. Many will have met Linda at previous Cats & Cans events.

See you at the next General Meeting and cross your fingers for good weather on the 19th October 2014.

“Tales” From the Jaguar Drivers Club SA Library Book Review: Now just in case we get some wet weather soon and golf is very reluctantly cancelled and knitting is not what you want to do (hang on ladies some males do knit as well!), how about a great book to read, on one of your favourite Jags you would love to have!

SS & Jaguar Cars by Allan Crouch is a very special book, which took five years to put together (it won’t take 5 years to read though!). The author is a volunteer researcher in the Jaguar Heritage Archive and has established a complete history of the production of these cars. Based on what he has carefully compiled, the book examines the cars, their development and their features in significant detail.

Contents include: Competition History Sales Exports Coach built cars One-offs Colour schemes Production changes and numbers Chassis numbers Rally entrants The icing on the cake to this book is the exceptional colour photographs of outstanding surviving examples of the cars as well as the unique and historic images from the archives.

This book is indubitably a great tribute to William Lyons’s memorable family of cars of this period. It is a step into history (and memory lane for some members) including the clothes worn in that era!

“Nobody knows” (or do some Members know?) Segment!!! : A new engine appeared in the late 1940’s. Mass-production cars of the late 1940’s usually had simple overheade late 1940'clothes worn in that era!e to Willam Lyons'g surviving examples of the carsicant detail-valve engines and some even had side-valve designs, but the new engine with its twin cam design, long stroke and significant power, was the World’s first quantity-production twin cam engine. This of course was Jaguars new XK Engine, which set a whole new bench-mark for mass-produced cars. It powered every large Jaguar saloon from the Mk VII to the 420G, also E-Type, the XJ6 range, the C-Type and D-Type racing Jaguars including the Alvis Scorpion armoured military vehicle. Members can read more about this and the Mk VII, in a book by Graham Robson – “The Big Jaguars”. .........a good read now will get you all in-tune for coming “SA Jag Day” ( incorporating Cats & Cans) on the 19th October, 2014 (just think about it, sat in your favourite chair, feet up in your favourite spot on the patio, reading one of these special books – go on ... spoil yourself!).

Getting Around to it!

We all do it. The excuse is we have not had time, or other things are more important. But mostly it is simply procrastination, “the greatest theft of time” they say.

The words we so often use are, “I just have not got around to it” It is interesting to think about those things we never around to. It may be that bit of maintenance on the Jaguar, buying that new part we have needed for months, or maybe more mundane things like getting the winter weeds under control, painting the fence or fixing the gutter.

It is a little more serious when not getting around to it, relates to relationship issues. Like telling those we love, that we do indeed love them dearly, or complimenting our children or grandchildren on their achievements etc.

Well I have good news for you all. Today you will never be able to say again, “I have not got around to it”.

For as you will see below you can cut this one out and keep it in a safe place for whenever you need it. NO MORE EXCUSES!

On quite a different note, I was rebuked last month for not revealing what car I had actually purchased. My response to the rebuke was that I did that so people would talk to me.

So here it is. Having sold the white XJC convertible last year I was determined to purchase another XJC as soon as I found the right car. It had to be a real one this time ie. Not customised as was the white convertible.

There were two very nice examples available for sale that I was aware of at the time, neither of which was currently being advertised for sale. One was a Daimler in Regency Red in NSW and the other a Jaguar also in regency red in Victoria. With the contacts I have I was able to get excellent information on both cars and either one of them would have suited me.

At that stage, my contact in NSW alerted me to a Daimler Sovereign Coupe currently for sale on Ebay. I immediately checked it out and was very impressed. The auction on Ebay had about two days to go and so far no bids recorded.

This did not give me a lot of time to check out the car, however my contact knew the car and spoke highly of the owner. After numerous phone conversations with the seller and a heap more photos I decided to bid for the car. I was successful at auction and am now the very proud owner of a 1977 4.2l Daimler Sovereign Coupe in British Racing Green.

VALE—MARTIN O’DEA It is with much sadness that I have to inform our club members of the passing of our most esteemed member Martin O’Dea on the 5th of September 2014.

I’m sure when the phrase “nature’s gentleman” was first thought Martin was the man they had in mind.

He will be sorely missed by everyone in the XJ, 420G, Mk10 Register, for his great sense of humour, charm, and the warmth he held for the club and everyone in it.

Car Talk at our meetings will not quite be the same. Often the members were told to go get a cup of coffee, sit back and relax because it was Martin’s turn to talk.

His genuine love of his family, his Jaguar and our club was always felt and I’m sure his passing will not be forgotten for years to come.

Martin joined the club in 2004, and enjoyed every day that he was a member, and we, as members enjoyed every minute that he was with us.

Inspection requirements for Historic Registrations have changed as most will be well aware.

It is now the owners responsibility to have their historically registered vehicle inspected every three years in addition to the signing of a Statutory Declaration annually.

This means that by June 2015 you do need to have your vehicle inspected by one of the club’s authorised inspectors.

The inspector will sign your log book to indicate that you have complied with this requirement.

This is a very simple inspection and can be done at regular club outings by arrangement with one of our authorised inspectors. Each Register has appointed inspectors and a 5

We look forward to hearing more of Pete’s Pet Project which is developing to assist growth of our club well into the future.

Vice President: (Julian) The Jaguar Drivers Club has continued to thrive over the last 12 months with an effective leadership team. Thank you to Di for her leadership and thank you to all executive committee members.

We have seen the retirement of long time vehicle inspector Don Evans who has made a great contribution to the club over many years. Our other long term vehicle inspectors Onslow Billinghurst, Geoff Mockford and Evan Spartalis have continued to provide great service to club members.

This year with the implementation of the 3 yearly inspections for historic registration we have increased the number of vehicle inspectors. Each register now has at least one vehicle inspector to assist the club in complying with registration requirements and our log book officer Kathy Taylor 7

has very effectively managed the logbook process and record keeping for our club.

I also want to congratulate the register secretaries who provide great support to club members and represent registers on the Executive Committee. Also thanks to all the other volunteers who help provide a service for members.

I wish the new committee all the best for the next 12 months.

Secretary: (Kathy) Recently the club has established a new mail box address at Halifax Street.

Over 230 members have had their logbooks processed this year.

Treasurer: (Tim/Di) Treasurers Report for the year ended 30th June 2014 Overall we have total assets of $79,596.37 (2013 $78,512.64), which includes term deposits of $48,568.31 (2013 - $47,389.02).

The result for the financial year was consistent with our budget with a small deficit of $4.39 A number of benefits and subsidies (direct & indirect) were passed onto members in a number of ways throughout the year. For example: presentation dinner, SA Jag Day, Christmas general meeting, calendars and Register Support.

These benefits total some $19,755 or 75% of total income for this year.

It still seems that club fees currently held at the 2008 level might not need to be increased for a couple of years and the executive will continue to review the long-term financial forecasts. Obviously further major changes around vehicle inspections could have a financial impost on clubs funds, which in turn may impact on membership fees.

A big thank you to Simon Mudie from Eastwoods for doing the Audit again this financial year.

We will continue to take where possible a long-term approach to our financial position so that the club is well positioned for the future to weather any “unknown unknowns”, not simply providing short term benefits which have no real member payback.

This is a brand new old Jaguar

Meet the ‘Mark 2’, a classic reimagined by Jaguar’s design director Ian Callum Today, Jaguar's design director Ian Callum and restorer Classic Motor Cars Limited have revealed the fruit of an 18month long collaboration on a new car.

It's a restored Jaguar Mark 2, redesigned by Ian Callum for his own personal use and announced at the unveiling of CMC's new premises in Shropshire. The building itself was officially opened by none other than 1964 F1 world champion John Surtees OBE. It's a Jaguar that Callum has wanted to update for a very long time, and takes in a modified and uprated 4.3-litre V8 from the Jaguar XK, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels.

The outside gets a new set of bumpers that are now "part of the overall form", together with louvres on the side of the car, designed in a low-pressure area for better airflow for that V8.

You'll see from the pictures that the interior has been reworked too, and features a Clarion single DIN multimedia station with a 16cm flip-out touch-screen, together with component loudspeakers.

This is a very personal statement," explains Callum, "a long held notion that, although the Mark 2 has always been a beautiful car, it could be even more exciting in shape and performance.

"Simplification and clarity was my objective," he added.

It sits 30mm lower on 17in split rim spoke wheels, because, as Ian notes, though "the stance of the Mark 2 is already excellent, I wished to make it even better".

In fact, the entire suspension setup has been reengineered

by CMC. The front gets a bespoke power assisted rack, uprated coil springs, roll bar and wishbone bushes, with adjustable dampers and solid subframe mountings (repositioned to improve anti-dive characteristics).

STOP PRESS Limited production run for Ian Callum's Jaguar Mark 2 Overwhelming reception to Jaguar design chief's personal project car prompts a modest production run The company responsible for the build of Jaguar design chief Ian Callum's personal Jaguar Mark 2 is producing a limited run of the car priced at between £350,000 and £375,000.

Shropshire-based restorer Classic Motor Cars Limited (CMC) spent 18 months developing the redesigned Mk2 to Callum's specifications for his personal use.

The finished car was shown off at the opening of CMC's new headquarters last month and the enthusiastic reception has encouraged the company to commit to a modest production run.

“The car has attracted interest from all over the world,” said CMC chairman Peter Neumark. “Within hours of the launch we had received calls from people all over the globe asking if they could buy one."

Callum has given his approval to the build: “I redesigned the car and CMC rebuilt it and re-engineered it for my personal use. I wasn’t sure how it would be received but I have been both astounded and delighted with the response. I am pleased that a few more cars are going to be built.”

Buyers will be able to choose their body and interior colours but the rest of the car will mirror the specification of Callum's example, which has a Jaguar XK-sourced 4.3-litre inline six-cylinder engine that produces 256bhp and 280 lb ft of torque.

Jaguar news Jaguar XE Reveal: Another huge event in September that no-one could have missed was Jaguar’s unveiling of the crucial new XE model.

A spectacularly orchestrated series of activities took place on September 8 that began at the Solihull plant where the XE will be built and ended at the Earls Court exhibition centre in London where 3,000 invited guests were treated to a Broadway style show before the XE was finally revealed.

To set the scene for the reveal, the show told the story of Jaguar’s history through a mixture of words and music.

Fronted by actor John Hannah and featuring music from the Kaiser Chiefs and Emeli Sandé, the performance made use of a number of heritage cars to illustrate the story.

Amongst these was the familiar 1954 short nose D-type and 1963 S1 E-type coupé from the Heritage collection (see pictures at bottom of previous page).

Immediately prior to the show, the XE had been helicoptered up the Thames and onto a special barge; it then made its way up the river, past the London Eye and was unloaded on the south bank to be driven across the beautiful Albert Bridge before being escorted along the Embankment by two period Mark 2 Police Cars which ushered it onto the stage at Earls Court!

C-type, registration NDU 289: Original entry in the 1953 Mille Miglia, and one of just 54 cars built.

D-type, registration 393 RW: This penultimate D-type won the 12 hours race at Reims driven, by Hamilton and Bueb, and was sixth at Le Mans with the same driver pairing.

Mark 2: A great example of the legendary sporting saloon for which Jaguar has become globally renowned, and the genesis of the brand-new XE. E-type, registration 77 RW: The Jaguar 'Works' press car, famously driven overnight by Norman Dewis to Geneva for its Motor Show debut to great fanfare. This was the first production Jaguar to reach 150 mph, and is the earliest surviving E-type Roadster.

XJ13: Only one example of this car was built, being the first Jaguar to use the V12 engine. The XJ13 was built for but never raced at - Le Mans, and was designed by Malcolm Sayer.

XJ6 S1: Car of the Year when launched in 1968, this particular XJ6 was Sir William Lyons' personal car.

TWR XJS: Tom Walkinshaw was very successful in motorsport for Jaguar in the 1980s and returned Jaguar to the podium with the racing version of the legendary XJS winning the European Touring Car Championship.

XJR-9: Jaguar won Le Mans in 1988 with this very car, in one of its seven victories in the famous endurance race.

As regular readers may recognise, all ten of these cars are part of the Jaguar Heritage Trust’s collection!

XK120, registration NUB 120: Perhaps the most famous XK120 in the world. Driven by Ian Appleyard and Pat Lyons (daughter of Sir William Lyons) to numerous rally wins in the 1950s, including the Alpine Rallye des Alpes in 1950 and 1951.

The Mannum Run is on Sunday, November 16th. If you intend to go please let Rob Loffler know and you must register using a form available from Rob. The Border Run is all under control. 6 Victorian couples were coming but 2 pulled out. However, 1 extra decided to come. There is therefore one Motel Room not taken that Vicki will have to cancel soon.

If any participants have any dietary requirements, please inform Vicki.

Jag Day is on Sunday, 19th October, as is the Cats & Cans for Salvation Army.

The Salvation Army will have a speaker at the next General Meeting.

Club Member, Martin O’Dea of the XJ Register sadly has passed away.

Two more volunteers are required for Jag Day. Please let Rob know.

The Club would like to have suggestions for guest speakers at the General Meetings.

S.A. will be hosting the 2018 National Rally without the requirement to hold a concours.

The Bay to Birdwood Rally is on the 28th September.

The Christmas Party will be at the Billinghursts on 7th December, Great news, Julian has the motor running on his XK120.

Bob advised the meeting Bill Browne has brake locking in reverse after washing the car.

Much discussion followed. Bob also advised that Martin O’Deas X300 Sport is for sale.

Ron Palmer 2014 XF 3.0 S/C 10500km returned 7.7ltr/100km on a recent run to Goolwa.

Open Forum: Des Brown spoke of the recent Spectacular release of the XE. Expect entry price about $48000 in Australia..New engines with a range topping 3.0litre Supercharged as in the F Type etc.

The cats giggle PRIZE WINNING IDIOTS FIRST GUY: A guy walked into a little corner store in Cairns with a shotgun and demanded all of the cash from the cash drawer. After the cashier put the cash in a bag, the robber saw a bottle of Scotch that he wanted behind the counter on the shelf. He told the cashier to put it in the bag as well, but the cashier refused and said, 'Because I don't believe you are over 21.'

The robber said he was, but the clerk still refused to give it to him because she didn't believe him. At this point, the robber took his driver's licence out of his wallet and gave it to the clerk.

The clerk looked it over and agreed that the man was in fact over 21 and she put the Scotch in the bag.. The robber then ran from the store with his loot.

The cashier promptly called the police and gave the name and address of the robber that she got off the licence. They arrested the robber two hours later.

SECOND GUY: A man, wanting to rob a Bank of Queensland, walked into the Branch and wrote 'Put all ya muny in this beeg.' While standing in line, waiting to give his note to the teller, he began to worry that someone had seen him write the note and might call the police before he reached the teller's window. So he left the Bank and crossed the street to the NAB Bank. After waiting a few minutes in line, he handed his note to the teller. She read it and, surmising from his spelling errors that he wasn't the brightest light in the Harbour, told him that she could not accept his stickup note because it was written on a Bank of Queensland deposit slip and that he would either have to fill out a NAB deposit slip or go back to Bank of Queensland. Looking somewhat defeated, the man said, 'OK' and left.

He was arrested a few minutes later, as he was waiting in line back at the Bank of Queensland.

Tommy Cooper one liners : 1. My friend drowned in a bowl of muesli. A strong currant pulled him in.

2. Two blondes walk into a building ........you'd think at least one of them would have seen it.

3. Two Eskimos sitting in a kayak were chilly.. They lit a fire in the craft, it sank, proving once and for all that you can't have your kayak and heat it too.

4. Man goes to the doctor, with a strawberry growing out of his head. Doc says 'I'll give you some cream to put on it.’

5. Apparently, 1 in 5 people in the world are Chinese.

There are 5 people in my family, so it must be one of them. It's either my mum or my Dad, or my older brother Colin, or my younger brother Ho-Cha-Chu. But I think it's Colin.

6. Ireland 's worst air disaster occurred early this morning when a small two-seater Cessna plane crashed into a cemetery. Irish search and rescue workers have recovered 2,826 bodies so far and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the night. .

Hillbilly Dayvorce A hillbilly farmer who wanted to get a divorce paid a visit to a lawyer.

The Lawyer said, “How can I help you?”

The Farmer said,”I want to get one of them dayvorces.”

The lawyer said,”Do you have any grounds?”

The Farmer said,”Yes I have got 40 acres.”

The lawyer said, “ NO, no you do not understand, do you have a suit?”

The Farmer said, “Yes I gat a suit, I wears it to church on Sundays” The Lawyer said, “No, no I mean do you have a case?”

The Farmer said, “No, I ain’t got a Case, but I got a John Deere.”

The Lawyer said, “No, I mean do you have a grudge?”

The Farmer said, “Yes, I gat a grudge, that’s where I park the John Deere.”

The Lawyer said, “Does your wife beat you up or something?”

The Farmer said, “No we both get up at 4.30.”

By now the Lawyer is rather frustrated but tries one last question.

The Lawyer said, “Is your wife a nagger?”

The Farmer said, ‘No she’s a little white girl, but our last child was a nagger—that’s why I want a dayvorce.”

Jaguar Heritage has opened a new workshop facility that looks set to rival local classics restoration houses, promising warrantied servicing and restoration of classic Jaguars.
