Update from the OCDA

The Oranmore Community Development Association CLG for those of you that don’t know, has been running in one form or another for over 50 years. It’s main objective, to promote the development of all areas of our community in an effort to make Oranmore a better place in which to live.

In our July issue of the ‘MORE News, we gave an update in regard to our plans for the development and maintenance of the local playground based in the main village adjacent to the large Astro Pitch. We reported that the OCDA had received approval of €6,500 in grant funding from the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA). Unfortunately, our application for funding to the Community Enhancement Programme 2019 was unsuccessful. The OCDA will be providing 20% match funding to the grant received from the DCYA, leaving us with a budget of €7,800 for the playground project.

There are a number of stages to this project that we hope to undertake.

1) The Oranmore playground is in much need of general maintenance of the existing play units. Parts on the existing frames need to be replaced as a matter of safety for the children who use the playground on a daily basis.

2) Access to the existing playground is also something we are looking to improve by adding a second entrance at the rear of the playground, while also replacing the defective fencing that is currently in place.

3) We would like to make the playground more inclusive for children of all physical abilities. We are planning on adding an inclusive chair to one of the existing swings as well as some Sensory Panels that can be added to the new fencing I mentioned above.

4) The safety surface in the playground also needs some general maintenance, with some area of the flooring suffering from general wear and tear as well as distortions caused by weather over the years. I have seen other playgrounds in Galway that have had the floors of the playground resurfaced recently and it really has had an excellent impact on the overall safety as well as the overall appearance of the playground. We would love to get those bright colours introduced to our Oranmore playground facilities, but this particular step comes at a significant cost.

Now that some funding has been acquired, we have started the procurement process for the development of the playground and should have some set plans in place with work due to begin in November of this year. We are hopeful to introduce as many steps of the development outlined earlier as possible, but it will very much depend on the amount of funds available. On this point, I would like to invite any parents or child and toddler groups to get in touch via email to ocdamanager@gmail. com if they would like to get involved in any fundraising initiatives to help raise more money to help develop the Oranmore Playground. With your help, I am sure we will be able to provide the children of Oranmore with an improved and more inclusive local playground.

On another development note, the OCDA have applied for grant funding to the Galway Rural Development (GRD) Leader programme, in order to carry out a feasibility study in relation to the development of Oranmore. The idea of the study would be to identify areas in the village that require development, such as Social, Cultural and Enterprise needs as well as looking into the possibility of additional parking and development of the existing sports facilities.

This feasibility study will allow us to assess if we can rectify any shortcomings in the current infrastructure and provide Oranmore with facilities that can make a significant contribution to the social and economic prospects of the citizens of Oranmore.

Zimmer Biomet Ireland Plays a Key Role in Helping 100 People in Vietnam Walk Again during pre-op, worked on their procedure in theatre and then saw them post-op and in recovery the next day. It was incredibly moving to see a patient, who has not walked for eight years, walking in physical therapy two days later.”

Zimmer Biomet, a global leader in musculoskeletal healthcare, has played a key role in helping 100 people from Vietnam to walk again. As part of a broader company effort, the company’s Shannon and Galway manufacturing operations recently donated knee implants to charity Operation Walk Ireland. Three employees from Ireland travelled to Vietnam to serve as part of a volunteer team from Ireland’s orthopaedic community. Over the course of one week, the 168-person team, which included surgeons, anaesthetists, physical therapists, nurses, sterilisation staff and implant specialists, operated on 100 patients in Hanoi, transforming the lives of people, who had been immobile for years.

The Zimmer Biomet volunteers included Ian Kelly, who heads up the company’s commercial operations in Ireland.

He describes the experience in Hanoi as life-changing. “We saw the whole patient journey. We met all of the patients

As a result, an important component of our work is to cooperate with the Vietnamese surgeons and medical team who are extremely interested in learning modern minimally invasive and rapid recovery techniques in hip and knee replacements . We are proud of the role Ireland plays – ours was one of the first international chapters to be set up and the Ireland business and medical orthopaedic community continues to provide huge support. I want to extend a big thank you to Zimmer Biomet for its generous donation and for the dedication and expertise of its volunteers.”

Gary Madden - Zimmer Biomet Interview to me. Zimmer Biomet provides the added benefit being able to work close to home, while offering a more secure career with great benefits and opportunities. The company manufactures orthopedic implants for knees in Oranmore.

Tell us a bit about you?

My name is Gary Madden. I was born and reared in Maree, Oranmore, where my family has deep roots in the local community. In terms of education, I attended Maree NS and Calasanctuis College. The community continues to play a huge part in my life as I am a member of many local clubs, including the Maree Oranmore GAA club. I also play golf, badminton and soccer, making great use of the wonderful facilities around the area.

What was your profession before you joined Zimmer Biomet?

My background is in construction. I spent 10 years working as a carpenter after completing my apprenticeship.

Construction was something I loved as I enjoyed being outside and every day was different. However, one downside was the lack of stability as I did not know where I would be working from one week to the next. There was also a lot of travel involved.

Tell us how you came to know about Zimmer Biomet? What did you know about the company?

I had previously heard about Zimmer Biomet’s successful operations in Shannon. When I found out that there was a plant opening in Oranmore, I was interested to learn more. Having had no previous experience in a manufacturing company, I did not know what the company actually did.

I investigated and managed to get in touch with a friend, who had recently started working in the Oranmore plant. Talking to him gave me a good idea about the company values, the kind of work available and allowed me to assess if it would suit me. My friend had also been in the construction industry and explained how Zimmer Biomet had provided training and support throughout the learning process. That was reassuring to hear. My friend also told me how much he liked his new role as a Product Builder and that he found the work very meaningful as every day he was helping to improve people’s lives.

What did it mean to Oranmore when Zimmer Biomet opened in 2015?

Zimmer Biomet is a global medical device manufacturing company. To have such a leading company create so many jobs for the local area it is a huge boost for the Oranmore community. I am sure that the company and the community will continue to thrive and benefit from one another. Zimmer Biomet continues to expand and there are many interesting roles available in various departments throughout the plant. Zimmer Biomet Oranmore currently employees over 250 people. Many of my colleagues live locally in Oranmore with a very short commute to work.

Can you tell us about your career journey In April 2016, I joined Zimmer Biomet as a Product Builder, despite having had no previous manufacturing experience. After undergoing extensive training, I quickly excelled and gradually took on more and more responsibilities while showing my value as an employee.

While I worked hard, it was always recognised and appreciated.

After working with Zimmer Biomet for eighteen months, I was offered the chance to return to college and complete a Manufacturing Technician Apprenticeship, a two-year programme sponsored by the company. 70 percent of my time is spent in the workplace and the remainder is spent at GMIT. I am currently half way through my second year and thoroughly enjoying the challenge.

What type of internal training is offered?

Exposure to unfamiliar technology was challenging in the beginning but the onsite training has really helped develop my skillsets. I have also enjoyed opportunities like “Train the Trainer” along with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint presentation training. My skills have really advanced since I joined the company.

What attracted you to join Zimmer Biomet?

Finding out that the work was both technical and interesting made me decide to apply for a Product Builder role. Looking back, it was definitely the best decision I have made to date in my career. I enjoy the work and the people I work with. I also see the wealth of opportunities in the medical device sector and the great career options open 3

What are you currently working on?

I moved out of the Product Builder role and have been working on the engineering side for the last year.

Up until recently, I was part of a product transfer project team, responsible for introducing a new shoulder implant product to the Oranmore plant. I have just moved to a Continuous Improvement project team, focusing on one of the knee implant production lines.

What does it mean to you to be working in a medical device company?

For me, the work is meaningful as you are building implants to improve people’s mobility. The company sponsors charitable programmes like Operation Walk, where it provides implants and instruments to healthcare professionals, who travel to less well-off areas in the world to perform critical operations. When you see the difference this makes to people’s lives, you feel a real sense of pride and ownership. In fact, you feel directly involved as the implants are built in the Oranmore and Shannon facilities.

We also participate in a charity cycle in aid of The

Saoirse Foundation, BUMBLEance Children’s National Ambulance service, allowing sick children to travel safely and comfortably to and from their homes to hospitals, hospices, treatment centres and respite centres nationwide.

Last year, we raised over €10,000 for the charity. Apart from being great fun and good exercise, it’s wonderful to know that you are also doing some good.

Zimmer Biomet offers a complete employee experience, while actively encouraging and assisting employees to pursue third level training to further career prospects and become involved in new and exciting projects. Music Session for Juniors

The Oranmore Community Development Association in co-operation with the Oranmore Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann are running weekly music sessions for Primary schoolchildren, in the Pre-Fab beside the Gaelscoil in Oranmore, from 6.00pm to 7.15pm on Monday evenings. This is an opportunity for children from the four Primary schools in the parish to come together for a weekly music session where they can play and practice their music with other musicians of similar age, swap tunes, learn new tunes and make new friends in the music world. All instruments are catered for, and while it is mainly traditional music, it is not exclusively so. There is adult supervision and assistance from adult musicians, and there is no charge. Narcissist “A Narcissist? Who called you a Narcissist?”

“This lady on table four. I brought her an espresso and she said to me… “I think you are a Narcissist.” Do you know this word, Narcissist?” he asks, in hope of finding some continental translation. This particular “Narcissistic” waiter, who already boasts fluency in three continental languages, seems bright-eyed at the opportunity to add this new little gem to his English vocabulary. He’s laying cups on the dishwasher tray. I’m crushing cookies with a mallet to make rocky road, with inappropriate zeal perhaps.

Baking is excellent therapy.

“Yes, I am familiar with the word” I say and I’m probably grinning. “Can you maybe give me a little context? Why do think she might have called you a Narcissist?” I try to mask the mounting panic in my voice, while I wonder what on earth he had said. My brain begins drafting possible replies to the imminent TripAdvisor backlash.

“Well…” he stands like Peter Pan while he thinks. “She asked me how long I have worked here. I told her one month. She asked me then if I worked as a waiter back home. I told her, Yes, but I think Lily hired me for my good looks” “Fabio!” I say too loud. “That is absurd! I would never hire someone based on such cosmetic and frankly offensive criteria. I am offended! GENUINELY offended!” I might be shouting. “You know very well you were hired because you opened the interview with a knock-knock joke. Go tell that customer you were hired for your knock-knock jokes, not your good looks and certainly not your ego.”

“So, it is good to be a Narcissist then?” she asks genuinely, in her Continental twang.

“How do you mean?” I put down the mallet and stop humming ‘Hammer Time’ in my head for a moment.

“Narcissists love themselves and you say I should love myself” she points out and admittedly has a point.

It stumps me a bit and I rummage for my phone in my apron pocket as the realisation hits that I might not fully understand the word myself. I may need Google.

“No. You should definitely love yourself but not too much because then you’re a Narcissist and I don’t think that is delivered as a compliment very often. I’m not sure who tells us when we love ourselves enough though. The media maybe, or that lady on table four” My logic feels tangled.

I’ve confused myself.

“Are you a narcissist?” she asks in a tone of complete innocence, with no intent to offend. It makes me laugh.

“Hahaha! I’m not sure. You’ll have to ask my friends. I do sort of plod through life assuming most people like me. Ironically this approach might ensure that not many people do… but what can I say? I’m the only me I’ve got! It’s a tranquil way to live. It beats the alternative anyway. To be perfectly honest, I’m not entirely sure what a Narcissist is.

I’ll ask Google” I produce my phone.

“Okay” he says and struts to the floor. I exhale through my teeth and silently debate whether I had just given some woeful customer service advice to our resident “Narcissist”.

[Narcissist: noun- A person who has excessive interest in or admiration of themselves]”

“So, what is a Narcissist then?” a new voice asks in a near whisper. She’s delicately weighing flour for tomorrows soda breads. She triple-checks the recipe with each new move.

We both nod to denote some level of comprehension and I give further thought to the idea of adopting the label of Narcissist. “Well, I do like to be excessive where possible, and I love a compliment now and again, if there’s one going cheap. Maybe I am a Narcissist. Is that a bad thing?”

“I’m not sure really. People that love themselves or have notions of their own self-worth. Something like that.

Certainly not something you will be labelled with, Lainey.

Is there any chance you can speed up that process? We close in an hour. You’ll have to sleep here if you measure at that pace.”

“Sorry, sorry” she whispers again and nearly cries. “I’m useless at this stuff. I’m no good at anything”

I breath in. “Lainey, we would not allow you to do it if you were useless at it. You know these recipes. Trust your judgement. You’re good at lots of things. We all love you here. Try to love yourself more.” I spout out like a selfordained Zen Goddess.

“Well, I like you” she says kindly.

“Thank you very much, Lainey. That’s nice of you to say.

And, you know I love compliments. Way to know your audience” She laughs and seems to be rocketing through those bread mixes now in high spirits.

“Anyway…” I continue “Isn’t everyone and their cat a Narcissist these days?”

CULTURE & LIFESTYLE “I think the cats got there first” she beams back. Brilliant.

Does she even know how funny she is! I fully laugh.

“I get bored talking about myself. Let’s talk shop. I think crunched up crunchie bars would rock this rocky road. Any thought?”

knock knock joke!”

“Oh Yes! You shouldn’t keep your lady waiting. How do you forget your own joke, Fabio? Poor memory is a terrible affliction for a waiter. You should try to work on that” “Lily!” The joke!”

“Yes, one. If talking about yourself bores you, you’re the World’s Worst Narcissist.” I give a giggle and hold up the crunchies “Oh…and yes to crunchies” she finishes.

“Knock Knock” “Who’s there?”

“She wants to know the Knock-Knock joke” It’s Fabio back at the sink with a stack of plates and a Cheshire grin “Do you remember that joke from the interview, Lily?”

“Higher” “Higher who?”

“I might” I say and let mischievous silence linger. “You look very happy, Fabio.” I accuse. “Has the nice lady forgiven your Narcissism?” He’s blushing. Do narcissists blush?

“We are going out tonight” he pauses to give us time for woo woo noises, which we deliver accordingly, just like schoolgirls. We’re not very mature. “So, this ‘Narcissist’ is a good word then?” he states but as a question, still hoping to lock down his word of the day for his English vocab quota.

“Me!” He smiles wide but doesn’t laugh, which I would call an objective fail where jokes are concerned.

Anyway, it was his joke…

“We honestly don’t know, Fabio. Your new friend seems okay with it, or maybe she just likes your good looks.”

Lainey laughs out loud.

“Lily!” says Fabio and is getting impatient “Tell me the

In Praise of Autumn Plenty

Autumn has come again and we wonder where did the Summer go!!!! Despite the dip in the temperatures and recent broken weather, we did, in fact, have quite a good Spring and early Summer.... the season seems to come a little earlier now and August was not great this year – still Autumn is the season we usually associate with the harvest..... harvest of fruit and grains and hopefully plenty for the winter ahead. It is a time of gathering in of the fruits of the farming year and a busy time for farmers and those who have fruit trees at home.

Autumn, according to the poet, is the ‘Season of Mists & Mellow Fruitfulness’ and while some fruit has come – and gone – some fruits come into their own in September – wild berries such as the common and beloved Blackberry, and one, which is very familiar indeed and perennially popular …. it is, of course, the Apple ………….and that is the subject of our article this month.

But, you will protest, what can you tell us about the Apple that we don’t already know???!!!

Well, bear with me [(and with Niall Mac Coitir and his book ‘Irish Trees – Myths, Legends & Folklore’ (to whom I am grateful for lots of the information in this article)] and next time you go out to pick an apple you may look at it with fresh vision...............*Note: The remaining part of this article is, I admit, largely a copy of one I wrote first in this magazine many years ago but it is worth repeating I think.

A ‘Crab’ by any other name might be a ‘Rose’???!!

This is an article about trees and it is the tree from which the apple comes that is our subject.

We are all familiar with the apple trees we grow 8

in our gardens and with the extraordinarily wide variety of such trees and fruit that are available to the modern grower. However, this is essentially a ‘wildlife’ article – with a bit of myth and legend thrown in – so the tree we are discussing here is the ‘wild’ variety of Apple known as the ‘Crab Apple’ or Malus sylvestris – probably the ancestor of all our domestic varieties – Malus domestica.

Despite its name, the Crab Apple is, believe it or not, a member of the Rose Family. This family of plants contains a staggering variety of very different looking plants, shrubs and trees which range in size from tiny flowers, such as the little yellow cinquefoil Tormentil, to large shrubs – such as Hawthorn – and trees – such as the Apple.

Indeed this family is so numerous and varied that it merits a whole article in itself – maybe later on!!!

You may say, but haven’t roses, despite their beauty, got nasty thorns…….and apples don’t??!!!

Well, you’re right– but only partly. The domestic Apple does not have thorns, but the wild variety – the Crab – usually does, but the best way to differentiate a domestic apple tree from a Crab Apple is by the leaves – those of the Crab are ‘hairless’ whereas the cultivated tree has leaves which are slightly downy.

Where the Crab Apple scores over its cultivated cousin, however, is in its flowers.

The Crab is second only to Flowering Cherries in the excellence of its flowers – indeed you could do worse than to plant a Crab Apple for the beauty of its flowers alone and it is hardier than the Cherry into the bargain and, though it does not – like the cherry – have good Autumn colour it makes up by bearing very pretty flowers.

We all love apples and, of course, they have a wide variety of uses – apart altogether from ‘keeping

the doctor away’!!! With our modern refined tastes, however, the ‘wild’ Crab Apple would not be everyone’s favourite. Long ago though, before human tastes became conditioned to having sugar with everything, crabs were eaten as we would eat a sweet apple today.

However, we are not the only animals to relish an apple or two. Foxes like them and even cattle and sheep seem to like the less acidic ones. Slugs, as any gardener knows, love them and will devour those left lying on the ground. As for birds, they are very partial to apples and can spoil a whole orchard by pecking a hole in each apple.

Insect larvae don’t seem to like Crabs as much as domestic apples – probably because crabs are more acidic.

The Autumn Equinox takes place this month and days grow shorter. While there is a touch of melancholy about as Autumn comes – holidays are over and children back to school - September can often bring a spell of good weather too and, even if it does not, what it does bring is the apple harvest and, as the Apple is a tree of healing, apples are thought to restore energies and give new hope.

An old Samhain charm required all an area’s unmarried young people to tie an apple on a piece of string and whirl it around before a fire. The one whose apple fell off first would be the first to marry but the unfortunate one who was last left with an apple was fated to die unmarried!!!

Another trick was to peel an apple in one long strip, toss the strip backwards over the left shoulder and the shape made by the peel was said to give the initial of the person’s future spouse!!!

The Apple was associated with fertility also. At Circencester in Britain there is a stone statue from Celtic times depicting a seated mother goddess figure with three apples in her lap as a symbol of fertility and the Norse Goddess, Iduna, kept apples in a chest to give to the gods so as to maintain youth and health.

The apple harvest, of course, also comes in time for Hallowe’en when lots of games involving apples used to take place.

Apples of healing and restoration …

There is an endearing story told of hedgehogs rolling in apples and carrying a load of them off on their spines to their nest to eat. Unfortunately, given the fact that no-one has ever actually seen hedgehogs eating apples (hedgehogs generally eat slugs, worms and the likes), the story is more likely to have arisen from hedgehogs falling on apples (hedgehogs often throw themselves from walls or banks, rolled up to break the fall) which then become attached to their spines giving rise to the ‘myth’ of the hedgehog ‘gathering’ the apples for food.

Apples of Love and Fertility…

The Ogham Month we celebrate at this time is Cert (5 September – 2 October) corresponding to the Gaulish month Ogronios which means the ‘Cool Month’ i.e. the time when cold weather arrives

The Apple tree is a tree of healing and renewal.

In the ‘Otherworld’ apples were always golden coloured and tasted of honey and they possessed great restorative powers.

King Arthur – he of the Round Table – was, you will recall, brought to the mythical island of Avalon -‘the Island of Apples’- when he was mortally wounded in order to recover from his wounds.

The Irish Sea God, Mannanán Mac Lir, lived at Eamhain Abhlach – the place of the Apples –(the Gaelic ‘Avalon’), which was an island said to be full of trees bearing the most beautiful golden apples. Mannanán had a branch from which hung nine gold red apples and the music they made when struck was so sweet it restored life to the sick.

Trips by mortals to these eternal other-worlds are the subject of numerous stories throughout the 9

Celtic world. In one of the best known, the same Mannanán Mac Lir, dressed as a warrior carrying his branch of nine apples, appears to Cormac Mac Airt at Tara. When the branch was shaken its music was so beautiful that the listener forgot all troubles and tiredness. Later Mannanán brought Cormac to his island other-world, Tír Tairngire, the Land of Promise (another name for Eamhain Abhlach) , where he presented him with a Cup of Truth.

Apples of Saints and Sinners …

There are several examples of saints being associated with Apple Trees. St. Brendan and his companions at the end of their voyage reach the ‘Land of Promise’ (this time referring to ‘the New World’ or America!!!) which is described as ‘full of fine apple trees in fruit’.

In Adamnán’s ‘Life of St. Columcille’ there is a story of an Apple Tree at the monastery of Durrow which had been bearing bitter fruit. However, at the saint’s command it changed and from then on bore only sweet apples.

St. Brigid, however, for some unknown reason, actually cursed an apple tree which was very fruitful and caused it to become barren!!!

However, she redeemed the situation by blessing an Alder Tree which, from then on, bore twothirds apples and one-third ‘sweet sloes’. Saints had some peculiar ways hadn’t they??!!!

St. Mochuda, to prove his holiness to a druid, blessed an apple branch four times – at the first blessing it bore leaves; after the second it blossomed; after the third it produced sour fruit; but after the fourth it bore fruit as sweet as honey.

The same Mochuda also used apples to effect cures, at one time curing a child with a withered hand by holding out an apple to her – when the child grasped the apple her hand became whole.

St. Patrick – never to be left out – amongst his many other activities, took time out to plant an apple tree at a place known as Achadh inna Elta (the Field of the Doe); while, in Scotland, St. Servanus flung his staff across the Firth of Forth and where it landed it took root and became an Apple Tree.

As for Sinners, well, of course, even though the Bible doesn’t say so, the Forbidden Fruit of the Tree in the Garden of Eden is always thought of as being an Apple!!!

The Other-World Tree of Kings and Poets …

The Apple, with its fruit ripening at this time, is also associated with the Celtic Feast of Samhain at which time the great Harvest Festivals took place.

Like the Hazelnut, apples, too, are associated with royalty and poets. The Rath of Aedh of the Poets had ‘golden yellow apples in it and crimson pointed nuts of the wood.’

King Conchubhar, the Red Branch King of Ulster, had a silver rod with three golden apples on it and, when he shook or struck it, the entire house would be silent.

There are many more tales told of the magical healing powers of apples but there is no space here to relate them all, you’ll have to read more yourself.

W.B. Yeats, in his mystical poem ‘The Song of Wandering Aengus’ also refers to Apples linking them in to the mystical other-worldly theme of the poem:

‘Though I am old with wandering Through hollow lands and hilly lands, I will find out where she has gone, And kiss her lips and take her hands; And walk among long dappled grass, And pluck till time and times are done The silver apples of the moon, The golden apples of the sun.’

Madden Conquers the Channel

He stood knee height in the waters of the secluded Samphire Hoe Beach on the South East Coast of England.

It was 11.40pm, pitch dark, except only for the port and starboard lights of his 30ft support boat called Gallivant piloted by Mike Oram. It was eerie. He wore swimming togs, goggles, a swimming cap and ear plugs. He remained alone in solitary silence. So this was it. This is what he had spent the past 3 years preparing for. Destination France.

This is the story of Fergal Madden (48), a native of Derrydonnell, Athenry, who became the first male Galwegian to swim the English Channel, a challenge which adventurers say is even greater than scaling Mount Everest. It is Friday night, August 2nd 2019 and Fergal has a gruelling challenge ahead of him which will fully test both his physical and mental capacity. A full 16 hours and 46 minutes later Fergal will exit the channel on French soil on a beach know as Cap Blanc Nez. He has achieved greatness and written his name into the annals of sporting greatness.

Fergal Madden grew up in Derrydonnell, Co. Galway.

His father Tommy, RIP, was the much renowned cross country runner whose wonderful achievements are well documented. Unusually, Fergal didn’t learn to swim until he was almost 30 years of age and only became interested in Open Water swimming in 2014. In 2015 he was instrumental in setting up the Atlantic Masters Swimming Club which no boasts in excess of 70 active members.

While he very soon began participating in long distance swimming, having completed 6 Galway Bay swims to date and 3 Lough Gill swims, it wasn’t until he completed a relay crossing of the English Channel with his close friends Helen 16

Colfer and Annette Cullen in 2018 that he fully committed to taking on the gruelling task of completing a solo crossing.

While Fergal had always maintained a very high level of fitness and followed a rigorous training programme, for the past 20 months he hired the assistance of strength and conditioning coach Gerry Cronnelly Jnr, swimming coach David Warby, nutrionist Honor Geraghty and sports dietician Laura Mahony and physio Emer Collins. He also spent time with Ned Dennison at his training camp in Cork. Fergal also put together a very experienced support team consisting of Paddy Mac, known and respected throughout the country for his knowledge of Open Water Swimming, Pascal Phelan who is one of the top Open Water swimmers in the country and Alice Flood who became the first ever Galwegian to complete the crossing in 2017. These three members of his support team would play a vital role in getting Fergal across the channel as they observed his every stroke, totalling 55,500, provided encouragement and had a well earned drink available to Fergal every 30 minutes. The swim itself is deceiving. Very deceiving. It measures 21 miles as the crow flies. However, owing to the huge influence of tides and strong currents it is estimated that the distance can range from 25 miles to 35 miles depending on conditions.

Fergal’s swim was a 30 mile endurance. However, Fergal had prepared for all eventualities. His training regime for the past 3 years was immense, training 6 days a week, twice a day sometimes, covering distances ranging from 20km to 45km weekly mostly in the sea. However, no training can prepare one for such a marathon swim. Swimming for almost 6 hours in pitch darkness, being constantly stung by jellyfish, swimming for one full hour and not moving 1m owing to the ferocity of the current, enduring swollen tonsils, lips and tongue as a result of the salidity of the water and extreme fatigue. In truth, it takes a rare breed to complete a channel crossing and Fergal Madden certainly is that. In February of this year Fergal was awarded the Irish Long Distance Swimming Association (ILDSA) Connaught Open Water Swimmer of the Year for 2018, a great achievement in itself.

Oranmore Doing More Together

Adrian Furey, Zimmer Biomet, John Burke, Scoil Mhuire Pre-school, Máirín O’Reilly, Mór Public Relations, Gary Loughlin, Loughlin Accountants, Helen Keane, Bank of Ireland, Eleanor Leadbetter and Lindsay Deely, Toodlelou Creativity Labs, Fiona Mullins, Vincent’s Shop Oranmore, Brenda Gorman, Oranmore Lodge Hotel, Annette Hassett, SCCUL, Evelyn Burke, Lámh and Olwyn Trainor, Scoil Mhuire Parents Association - many of whom are active volunteers in the many community, arts, heritage and sports clubs in the area. Also involved is Ann Finn, Annabelle Fitzgerald of the Oranmore Twinning, Tom Broderick, Oranmore Community Development Association and Cllr. Martina Kinane of Bridge That Gap. The weekly meetings have been kindly hosted by Glynn’s Bar. As the judge’s time is limited to 3 hours, a very strategically planned series of events, presentations and walking tour of the village have been planned. It is hoped that the judges will be wowed by our enterprising population that very much punches above its weight with the wealth of community, voluntary, sporting, business and enterprise activities and achievements to date.

Oranmore has been nominated once again for the Bank of Ireland Enterprise Town Awards and the judging panel will be hosted in the village on Monday 23rd September from 2 to 5pm. This would be a great accolade to raise the profile of Oranmore nationally, highlighting the positive and proactive initiatives of our many local organisations, businesses and community making the area a great place to live and work. A group of volunteers representing the many aspects of both business and community life in Oranmore came together in July to work on this initiative and to put our best foot forward to win the title of Enterprise Town 2019. The group have been greatly motivated by the very positive feedback received from the judges on the previous entry in 2017.

A call to action went out to all locals to take part and support our efforts to show the great collaborations and supportive spirit of the locality. The presentation on the day will showcase the ethos of innovation, proactivity, sustainability, collaboration, social inclusion, leadership and the wonderful sense of energy in the village.

With a potential prize fund of €33,000, this is a great incentive for our village to work together on this. Bank of Ireland’s National Enterprise Town Awards recognise the spirit of enterprise in local areas across Ireland, bringing business and community groups together to showcase their efforts to build an economically sustainable community. The winners will be announced at a gala awards ceremony taking place at The Lyrath Hotel, Kilkenny on December 5, 2019.

The voluntary group working on this represents both business, sport and community groups. The project is being coordinated by Gillian Carey, a volunteer with Amhrán Mór Intergenerational Choir and Oranmore Arts Festival. Local businesses involved include: Seán and Anna Ó Máille, Glynns Bar, Myles McHugh, Spar, Bluebell Woods, Michael Cannon, Cannon Concrete, 18

An added element to the project is the tagline which represents the sentiment of the motivation and aspirations of our community – Oranmore Doing More Together #doingMoretogether. Posters and window signs for businesses designed by graphic designer Corinna Maguire will be displayed to show the partnership locally.

The aim is to create awareness and a buzz in the locality in the lead up to the judging day and to promote the ethos of ‘Doing More Together’ into the future.

Tuam, Salthill, Portumna, Galway Westend, Clifden and Oranmore have entered in Co. Galway, with a total of 19 entries in the Connacht/Ulster region and 70 nationwide. There are over 40 awards available from a total prize fund of €193,000 with the overall winning town or urban village/area awarded €33,000 and the title of Ireland’s Most Enterprising Town, which in 2018 was won by Letterkenny.

LOCAL FARMING

Welcome to harvest time of the year on the farm.

Most of the summer festivals are behind us. We enjoyed a great week at the Galway races and our village deserves great credit for the evening entertainment and the atmosphere it generated. Next up we have Oktoberfest as so many of the businesses put their best foot forward to showcase all that is best locally and of course we will attend the national ploughing championships in Carlow.

The Harvest On the farming scene, there was quite an amount of corn sown in Oranmore this year with beautiful golden fields to be seen in Frenchfort, as well as Moneymore and Rinn. It really is one of the gifts of nature to see a seed being planted in fertile ground, then for the climate to play it’s part, providing the rain and the sunshine to warm the ground, allowing the soil to put so much energy towards growing the crop to produce the harvest. This year all the ingredients for a wonderful crop fell into place, including a good spring, followed by adequate moisture and lots of summer sunshine. But then mother nature gave us a

strong reminder of where we live on the west coast, raining almost every day during the month of August, sending us a massive 300mm, almost 12 inches of water in old money. This was more than the total of the combined 4 months previous to that and seriously tested the ability of cereal crop to remain standing while carrying their heavy harvest. Thankfully the sun shone for a few hours occasionally in early September and allowed enough time for the Combines to work and save the corn even if the moisture content of the grain was higher than ideal.

The Farm On our own farm we usually scan the cows in September to confirm pregnancies after the breeding season and to predict the calving dates next spring. PD also helps to identify the cows carrying twins so that they can be fed accordingly and ensure they are closely observed at calving time in case of complications. The grass continues to grow very well as the higher moisture levels during August, combined with the summer temperatures created the perfect environment. This lush high-quality protein rich clover pasture (photo “Clover rich pasture”) is consumed by the dairy cows every day and converted into grass fed milk. The cows are milked twice a day every day from early February

LOCAL FARMING to early December. Normally we milk at 6am (photo “Dawn milking”) and 4 in the afternoon. The milk is cooled almost immediately down to 4 degrees Centigrade by first of all passing through a “Plate Cooler” supplied with water at about 10 degrees from the underground farm well before flowing into the milk storage tank where the chilling is completed while simultaneously recovering heat from the milk to heat the water that is then used to wash the milking machine and the bulk milk tank. Our milk is collected by the Co-op every 48 hours for processing into cheese and butter. On the broader stage, almost 90% of Irish Dairy product is exported with more than half going to the UK. This will leave agriculture in an extremely vulnerable position if there is a no deal brexit because tariffs will be imposed on all produce entering the UK without a trade agreement.

Smart Farming I attended a number of “Smart Farming”, www. smartfarming.ie events recently including one in Kilkenny, opened by climate action Minister Richard Bruton. These are educational initiatives supported by the Irish Farmers Association to assist farmers for example in getting better returns for less inputs or by optimizing the resources available to us to ensure we use the correct amount of each ingredient to maximise returns. One of the big ones we are addressing at the moment, through education, are “Emissions”. Animal manure is identified as one of the culprits in this area and now research tells us that if we use a particular type of a machine to apply the slurry we can retain most of the energy by applying it close to or on the soil which gives better crops and also reduces losses to the air by as much as 90%, a “WinWin”. We also know through research that clover (photo)“Fixes nitrogen” and therefore requires less purchased nitrogen to promote grass growth. For clover to grow we need the PH of the soil at an optimum level of 6.3 which is determined by soil analysis and the application of ground limestone as required.

On our farm we grow “Willow”, a renewable energy crop that is being used to substitute for Peat at the Edenderry electricity generating power plant.

This is a government encouraged enterprise that is positive from the perspective that it is renewable, is very positive from the perspective that we are not burning peat which is one of our great resources as a “Carbon sink” but is negative in that we should not be generating heat burning anything to create electricity and from my own perspective is a non-profit making enterprise without government support, so it is not realistic to stay growing the crop. Agriculture itself has work to do and can definitely contribute with solutions on the climate challenges we all face.

Every day for me is a new day during which I try to do something good, something beneficial and over the last few years alone I see the interpretation of “what is good?”, changing on an almost daily basis.

So many fantastic new products discovered in our lifetimes such as plastic, which we all use extensively on a daily basis are now also showing up causing incredible damage to our oceans, as a result of either careless or deliberate dumping, sometimes for profit.

In my opinion Irish people are very conscious of our environment and it is through education we will make positive strides to reduce our impact on the planet. We also need the big countries such as China, USA and South America, particularly Brazil (Burning the Rain Forests) to act responsibly otherwise what we do will have zero impact.

Climate Change Other initiatives include the Teagasc Agricultural Sustainability Support Advisory Programme, “ASSAP” based in Galway under the guidance of Noel Meehan ,testing water quality on a nationwide basis and assisting farmers to put better safeguards in place to avoid leakage.

Irish agriculture in 2019 has a lot of science and measurement going on with a large number of different groups employed or funded by government overseeing it on a day to day basis.

Update on the Old Limerick Road footpath With Matrina Kinane

Over the last two years I have continuously lobbied Galway County Council for the installation of a footpath and cycle path from the Old Limerick road junction to the Maree road junction to support the “ safe passage” of all school going children and young adults to their individual schools. I have also sought for the development of a footpath into the Deerpark Industrial Estate in the interest of pedestrian safety . Hopefully, funding will be secured for both projects under 2019 Town & Village Renewal Scheme submitted mid May 2019.

I have been advised by area engineers that a decision is excepted shortly from the Department of Community and Rural Development on these proposals.

Pedestrian Crossing at Maldron Hotel

For a number of years now a request for a pedestrian crossing at the Maldron Hotel has been made to the roads section of the council. They have informed me that this is a matter for Transport Infrastructure Ireland. I have been informed now that the survey is well underway. The results will then have to be compiled and a report submitted to TII for consideration. Galway County Council have assured me that it will be progressed as quickly as possible.

Footpaths on the Maree Rd

Following numerous complaints that I have received about the condition of the footpath particularly from the entrance to Oranhill down to Renville Park I have asked the Municipal District Engineer to resolve this ongoing problem. It is neither safe for pedestrians or parents wheeling their children and these footpaths carry a lot of foot traffic each day. I await a reply.

Flooding in Cloonarkin Estate

On receipt of a photographs of the recent flooding I forwarded them to the Athenry Office and the workmen came and cleared the blocked gullies.

Glenascaul Roads

Prior to the Local Elections in May last a well attended meeting took place in Oranmore with residents from the Glanascaul roads on both sides of the R 381 in attendance. I travelled the roads to see at first hand what they were like. Following that meeting I met with the Municipal District Engineer and impressed the urgency of dealing with these roads. I was told that it was not in the roads programme for this year but that it would be treated as an emergency if the council secured funding later this year. The roads programme will be coming up for 2020 in the not too distant future and I will be asking that these roads be included and will be seeking the support of my fellow councillors for this.

Fine Gael, Galway West With Hildegarde Naughton TD

A number of key healthcare infrastructure projects in Galway have been included in the Government’s new €2 billion HSE capital spending plan, which will see them progress under the three-year strategy.

The projects include a new elective hospital at Merlin Park, a new emergency department at University Hospital Galway (UHG), a new ambulance base in Galway city, and the development of a blood science laboratory.

The inclusion of a large number of new and upgraded healthcare facilities for Galway was welcomed by local Fine Gael TD Hildegarde Naughton, who was a member of the Oireachtas Committee on the Future of Healthcare.

Investment in healthcare has been a central tenet of Deputy Naughton’s work since her election to the Dáil in 2016, and she has led the campaign for the development of a new hospital at Merlin Park.

“Having been part of the committee that developed Sláintecare, our first long-term strategy for the transformation of our health service, I am acutely aware of the legacy deficits in healthcare infrastructure that exist both locally and nationally,” she said.

“I am grateful that Minister Simon Harris has taken account of the issues I’ve raised in this regard, and many of those deficits will be addressed under the new capital spending plan.”

Merlin Park has been earmarked as a location for one of three new elective hospitals nationwide, which are aimed at reducing waiting times and overcrowding. A new modular theatre at the site will be prioritised under the new plan.

Funding has also been allocated for the refurbishment of the 60-bed community nursing unit at Merlin Park. Galway’s two existing cardiac cath labs will be replaced, and a third will be developed.

The long-awaited new emergency department at UHG will be progressed under the €2 billion spending plan, while a new maternity unit and paediatric unit will be developed over the new ED.

Building work will commence on a radiation oncology project at GUH – one of three such projects nationwide. The mortuary at UHG will undergo major refurbishment works, while new a new IT room and water systems have also been approved at the hospital.

Deputy Naughton said that the approval of a large number of local projects in the spending plan was the culmination of much work with hospital management, clinicians, the department, and Minister Simon Harris.

“This is an area of utmost priority for me, and I am pleased that progress is continuing to improve our local health service and ensure that we have facilities in place to meet the needs of both current and future generations,” she stated.

“I am particularly pleased that UHG is no longer the sole focus of infrastructural investment in Galway, and there is now a realisation that Merlin Park must be developed in order to relieve and improve our hospital services.

“We are beginning to see the development of more healthcare facilities at that location, and this will pay dividends for patients in both Merlin Park and UHG,” explained the Fine Gael TD.

Oranmore/Maree senior camogie team qualified for the County Senior League Final when they defeated Davitts in a game played under lights in Portumna. Davitts opened the scoring with a point after 4 seconds, one minute later Chloe Farragher added a goal. Midway through the first half Davitts led by 1-4 to 0-4, Oranmore/Maree were in control for the second quarter and points from Eimear O’Donovan (3) and Clodagh Power left the half time score Oranmore/ Maree 0-8, Davitts 1-4.

On the resumption Eimear O’Donovan increased the winners lead with a pointed free. Taragh Moloney pointed 2 45’s and a free to give Davitts a one point advantage with 10 minutes remaining.

Eimear O’Donovan restored the Oranmore/Maree girls lead with 2 points. In the 23rd minute a superb move involving Saraca Mannion, Rebecca Grealish and Eimear O’Donovan saw Amy Connolly lash the sliothar to the Davitts net. While the east Galway girls never gave up they could not break down a resolute Oranmore/Maree defence and it finished Oranmore/Maree 1-14, Davitts 1-11.

We congratulate all the players on this victory and compliment goalkeeper Tara Holland who made a number of vital saves.

Prior to this victory Oranmore/Maree defeated Pearses 1-21 to 0-8. In their final group game they played Killimor on this occasion, Oranmore/Maree had only 12 players. Despite the numerical disadvantage they were unlucky to lose as Killimor won on a final score: Killimor 0-13, Oranmore/Maree 1-8.

Renville Sports & Community Grounds – Update

by Robert Monaghan In excellent news for the project, this July Galway County Council decided to grant permission for the Renville Sports & Community Grounds, our Sports Centre of Excellence for the Oranmore-Maree area. The original planning application had been submitted in October last year. There were 10 submissions made on the application, including submissions by An Taisce and the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht. In early December the county council issued a Further Information (FI) request, seeking additional information on archaeological aspects, road layouts, winter birds and construction management plan. As there was significant work required to address the FI request (full archaeological impact assessment needed to be undertaken and a survey of birds was required over the winter period), the collation of the comprehensive FI responsive was not ready for submission until May of this year.

All-Ireland Final

We congratulate Ailish O’Reilly and Niamh Hanniffy on their fantastic displays in Galway’s victory over Kilkenny in the All-Ireland Final. Ailish O’Reilly laid the foundation for this victory with a goal in the first minute.

Niamh Hanniffy raised a green flag in the 23rd minute and Ailish O’Reilly scored her second goal before half time.

We wish Ailish and Niamh many more great days in the maroon jersey.

Approximately €110,000 has been spent to date on the planning process with a large number of comprehensive studies undertaken to address all critical planning issues.

Nearly €24,000 has been spent on archaeological related studies/investigations alone. With this investment by the club, it was therefore great to receive the positive news from the Galway County Council. Unfortunately, there have been three local objections to the planning decision (neither An Taisce or the Department of Culture, Heritage and Gaeltacht have objected), and therefore the planning decision has now gone to An Bord Pleanála. We are currently working hard on preparing responses to the points raised in the objections and will be submitting these shortly. The An Bord Pleanála decision is expected by December or early in the new year.

SPORTS In the meantime fundraising efforts for the project continue. The particular focus currently is looking for supporters of this visionary project to sign up to our €5 a week contribution (refer to the posters that have been put up around the village). It promises to be a great fun day concluding with a Seisuin in the club house afterwards. Lots of prizes to be won.

SFAI Irish Cup The first rounds of the Irish Cup were played recently, and Maree Oranmore FC had a clean sweep. Both U12 sides prevailed against Hodson Bay from Athlone and Bearna Na Forbacha. Our U14 side entertained Ballymote Celtic from Sligo running out 3-2 winners in a thriller. Finally, our U16 squad defeated Tuam Celtic in an 8-2 scoreline in Tuam.

New and old members are welcome to join the Club, where we cater for all ages and abilities from U6 to Adult for Boys and Girls, and we also run an FAI approved Football For All programme. Registration is via the Clubzap App which you can download from the App Store or Google Play Store. Clubzap is used to communicate Club News to all our members, parents and guardians so we recommend that you keep the app on your phone throughout the season.

U12 SFAI Irish Cup squad

Junior Soccer (Adult) Following an opening day defeat to a strong Mervue Utd team that won the Premier League last year, our Junior Premier squad bounced back with a win at St Bernards, went down on a 1-0 scoreline away to Loughrea and finally held a strong Salthill Devon side to a 1-1 draw.

Republic of Ireland v Switzerland Our U12 Players with Parents travelled in force recently to see the Ireland v Switzerland game in the Aviva Stadium. 61 players and parents travelled to see the match and a big Thanks to Philip Smith and Wesley Coyne for their preparation and organisation. Well done Lads.

SPORTS The Division 3 Squad have had mixed fortunes with a home win over Corrib Rangers and defeat away to a strong East United side.

Former Club members selected for Irish Internationals Well done to Donal Higgins (Ballinacourty Hill) who has been called into the International Ireland u19 Training squad to be held in Dublin early next week. Donal played all his schoolboy football for Maree/Oranmore fc. Player Development in a week which also saw former club player Aaron Connolly make his Premier debut cross channel with Brighton and Hove Albion.

Junior Division 3 Squad

Our U21 squad have been training hard and are eager to get the season going with the league scheduled to begin in September.

In a new addition to the Galway FA Leagues our Under 19 Ladies bounced back from a defeat to Mervue Utd on the opening day of the season with a comprehensive win over Corrib Rangers.
