comfort in staying close because of family ties, preferably traveling a lesser amount of hours compared to many out of state students. “I didn’t want to go out of state because of my family,” Marcantonio said. “I want them to be able to come up and visit and me visit them without having to drive over six hours.” In some situations, getting accepted to a specific in-state school completely changed the goal a senior had in mind to begin with, much like senior Sabrina Tannehill after she got accepted into Washington University. “I was actually wanting to go out

of state,” Tannehill said. “I actually preferred it. I just think I fit in more at Washington University. I am not going to feel like I am in Missouri because I will be in St. Louis, which is so different than Jefferson City.” The long lasting traditions and memories made in the athletic programs at the high school can also be a deciding factor to whether or not a student decides on staying in-state for post graduation plans. Senior Travis Burris has committed to play football at Central Methodist University in the Fall. “The coaches at CMU remind me a lot of the coaches here,” Burris said. “That is

one of the reasons that made me want to go there.” Studying new things and meeting new and diverse people is something that many seniors are looking forward to after receiving their diploma. “I am looking forward to studying things I want to study or I haven’t been able to study yet,” Tannehill said. “Also getting to explore a big city and finding myself in what I want to do and meet other people who like the same things as me.”

IN STATE

B

eing from the state’s capital, a city also known as the Most Beautiful Small Town in the United States, some students find comfort staying close to home for college. For the majority of the seniors, attending an in-state college is the next step into their future. Senior Margo Mendez, staying in-state is only a temporary way to save money. “It is less expensive,” Mendez said. “I could save up to go out of state later on. I want to do a couple of years at Missouri State University and that will save money to go far away later.” Senior Ana Marcantonio finds

S

tudents who plan to go out of state for the next four years of their lives can be intimidating, but for some it has been their lifelong dream. Senior Megan Lynn got accepted to the University of Dallas in Irving, Texas, heading south instead of to the west coast for her post graduation plans. “I started thinking about going to California in middle school,” Lynn said. “I just wanted to get away.”

Other students found it difficult to find a program that they wanted in Missouri such as senior Adam Waggoner. He plans on attending the University of Utah in Salt Lake City next fall. “[The University of Utah] has a really good program for what I want to do which is like integrated computer science and film with an emphasis on interactive media,” Waggoner said. Attending an out of state school also gives Waggoner the chance for a change of scenery. “I like the idea of moving to a big city which is outside of the norm for me.”

Waggoner said, “I feel like it’ll be a big change from small city to big city and also not really knowing anyone. I am excited about it.” Another alternative to attending an in state college is Americorps or any other year long, non profit work program. Senior Mary Grace Newman has taken the opportunity to step outside of her comfort zone and head to the Big Apple for a year long program helping children at different schools. “[Next year] I will be in an Americorps program called City Year in New York City,” Newman said. “It was challenging

at first to have people understand that there is an alternative to going to college right away.” Going out of state for any post graduation plans has students eager to start a new chapter in their life. Deciding whether or not to go twenty minutes away or ten hours away can make a huge difference, so finding the right choice for your future can be an interesting process. “Just try to research as much as you can and talk to people,” Newman said. “Try to find out what you want to do next year and what you see yourself doing. Making lists and narrowing it down can help.”

Savanna Guitard

Dear Newspaper Seniors, Thank you for making this year an amazing one. The past nine issues would not have been the same without Thomas’s controversial comments, Savanna’s contagious laugh, Delaney’s wicked dance moves, Jaycie’s pep talks, Brianna’s positive personality, and Brenden’s GroupMe rants. We are sad to see you go but are happy to witness the amazing things that you are going to do with your lives. Whether you are moving 30 minutes away or 9 hours away, we are going to miss all of you in the journalism room next year. Thank you for sticking with us through the long work nights, the early paper days and the stressful deadlines. Thank you for keeping us sane and teaching us everything you know. Although newspaper will not be the same, just know you are leaving the paper in (semi) capable hands and that we will try to make you proud. Do not forget about us and please come back to visit.
