Age and Income: The median age and household income levels are compared with the national number as both of these factors are primary determiners of participation in recreation activities. The lower the median age, the higher the participation rates are for most activities. The level of participation also increases as the median income level goes up. The median age in the Primary Service Area and the State of Kansas is below the National number. When developing parks and recreation master plans and facilities the lower median age points to the presence of families with children, which are primary users of parks and recreation facilities and programs. With that information in mind it must also be remembered that there are retirees and Baby Boomers in the Primary Service Area. That segment of the population continues to stay active longer, which makes them a significant market for programming and another key user of parks and recreation facilities.
