About the Cover: Lindsey Austenfeld, APRN, is a nurse practitioner at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. She’s been participating in the KC Corporate Challenge for more than a decade. “As a retired college athlete, I enjoy the competition against other well-known Kansas City corporations,” she said. “I appreciate any excuse to be physically active, and I value the friendships that develop on the field but transfer off the field, too. I have met a lot of new people through KCCC, and it is fun to see them around the hospital. KCCC is a fun and free opportunity to be social and active. I look forward to our friendly competition and reconnecting with my teammates!”

KCCC Mission

s tat EME nt

To promote health, wellness, and camaraderie by presenting participants with physical endeavors designed to challenge their bodies and minds through the spirit of corporate competition.

Me SS age fro M the Pre S i D ent

As President of the Board of Directors, I would like to officially welcome you to the 45th season of the Kansas City Corporate Challenge.

Since the beginning of our initial season in 1980, hundreds of companies across the Kansas City region have come together year after year to promote wellness and build connection within the workplace. Through your continued support, Kansas City Corporate Challenge has become the largest and oldest corporate games in the country.

My involvement with KCCC began in 2011 as a participant, Company Coordinator and Ambassador before joining the Board of Directors. Serving as Company Coordinator provided me an opportunity to connect with many individuals within my company and across the region. I have witnessed over the years the level of commitment and hard work that the company coordinators and their coworkers put into every season. Observing the level of support, encouragement, and camaraderie built throughout the games as tens of thousands of Kansas Citians come out together each year in friendly competition has been an incredible experience to witness. Thank you to our company coordinators for the support and encouragement you provide to each of the Kansas City Corporate Challenge participants. Thank you to our presenting sponsor, PNC Bank, and to the companies who have signed on to sponsor in 2024. Sponsorship at every level allow us to present the highest quality support to our participants and companies taking part in Kansas City Corporate Challenge. The full list of sponsors can be found on the inside of the front cover of this Games magazine. Sponsors will also be highlighted at various events throughout the season. Our sponsors allow us to continue to present the Games successfully each year and we are thankful for their continued support.

The volunteers supplied by participating companies are a crucial piece of the success of the games. Throughout the season, we count on volunteers to provide course support, run water stations, hold timing blocks, cheer on participants and much more. A huge thank you to each the company volunteers.

Kansas City Corporate Challenge is proud to continue our partnership with our charity of choice, Cornerstones of Care, as our beneficiary for the 45th season of the games. A part of each entry fee is donated to Cornerstones of Care and directly benefit their Build Trybe program. The program centers around mentorship to help build health, independence, and empowerment skills among youth right here in the Kansas City region’s community. It is amazing to witness the great work Cornerstones of Care takes part in, and we are happy to partnership with them this season.

Each season the KCCC Ambassadors become the eyes and ears of the Board out on the field. They are invaluable throughout the season, working tirelessly with the Board at events to ensure the games run smoothly for our participants. Operating onsite alongside the Board at every event, the Ambassadors provide valuable assistance with set up, tear down, and everything in between. I am grateful to have an incredible Ambassador team at our side, and I cannot thank you enough.

The Board of Directors are one of a kind and I have had the opportunity to work alongside some of the most committed individuals to the games. Their dedication to its continued success is unmatched; working endlessly to create, plan and implement the safest and most successful version of events possible. The Board gives countless hours of volunteerism to ensure the best participant experience. I am truly grateful to work alongside these individuals as we celebrate the 45th season. We look forward to seeing you as we continue celebrating the many participants and champions since 1980. Let’s Play!

Dear Corporate Challenge Friends,

Cornerstones of Care is proud to be the beneficiary of the k ansas City Corporate Challenge, and we couldn’t be more honored and excited to be a part of this fantastic event alongside you all.

Cornerstones of Care’s mission is to partner for safe, healthy communities. The money raised during the kansas City Corporate Challenge will benefit our Build Trybe Program. This program is a mentorship community that builds health, independence and empowers youth with employable skills. It is a bridge connecting youth, who lack a stable support system, to opportunity. our team of trade experts and community partners introduce and connect youth to three skill-based career paths and education in the culinary arts, construction trades, and horticulture.

We encourage you to visit our website www.cornerstonesofcare.org, Build Trybe’s website at www.Buildtrybe.com, or check out Build Trybe on Instagram @buildtrybe. We would love to show off the great work that our youth perform every day. Please email me to schedule a tour of one of our campuses.

Sincerely,

2024 ambassadors

the KCCC ambassadors serve as the voice of the participant, and the eyes and ears of the Board of Directors. Representing participating companies from throughout the Kansas City area, the KCCC Ambassadors may participate in the Games. An Ambassador is someone who encourages participants of all skill levels from all companies, supports the event officials, enforces event rules when necessary, provides feedback to the Board regarding companies that would be eligible for the Spirit and Sportsmanship Awards based on witnessed activities, and serves as a volunteer providing event assistance and administration. As experienced “KCCC Veterans”, they serve as mentors to new company coordinators. All suggestions and information provided to the KCCC Board of Directors by the Ambassadors will be considered, and it is certain that their involvement will greatly enhance the KCCC experience for all participants. We are very grateful to the following Ambassadors for their service and to their employers for allowing them to be a part of our organization.

if your company has someone interested in serving as a KCCC ambassador, please contact the KCCC office at kccorporatechallenge@gmail.com.

4 Years

As the Kansas City Corporate Challenge celebrates its 45th anniversary, one company has been around since the very beginning. Black & Veatch watched the Games grow from just 18 companies in its inaugural season to involving over 30,000 participants in recent years. They’ve seen competition evolve from just one weekend of events to nearly three full months. They’ve witnessed an unprecedented cancellation due to a global pandemic and were present when the torch was relit, and the Games resumed.

“I’ve made a lot of friends over the years inside the company and among other companies. We may only see each other for two months a year but we still catch up each year. It’s been an amazing time watching KCCC stay at the forefront of corporate events.” —Gayle Freeman

“I’m proud to be at a company that supports participation in this event every year, it shows how much they value and support their professional’s health and well-being.” —Brittany Schultze

“KCCC to me means an opportunity to participate in events that wouldn’t be an option for me otherwise; it allows me to challenge myself to see what I am capable of. KCCC allows me to step outside of my comfort zone and grow as an athlete by participating in events that I don’t do on a regular basis.” —Cara Adreon

“Many love the competition, many love going for their personal best and many just enjoy participating for points and in support of their corporate teams. There is a place for all!” —Angela

those involved each year in the Kansas City Corporate Challenge. The award is named for the late Alex George, founder of the Kansas City Corporate Challenge. It represents the values he demonstrated in his various sports activities, namely a competitive spirit, a selfless dedication to amateur athletics, lifetime physical fitness and good sportsmanship. Below are excerpts from the winning recipients’ nomination letters.

2023 aLE x G E or GE W I nn E r

As a pillar of the company’s success in the corporate challenge, Larry embodies the qualifications considered for this prestigious honor. His selflessness and dedication to the KCCC are unparalleled, as he tirelessly organizes and promotes events while putting the needs of the team above his own. His ability to create buy-in and encourage others is truly remarkable. Larry fosters an environment where individuals feel safe to step out of their comfort zones and venture into new territories. By constantly emphasizing the collective “we” over the individual “me,” he instills a sense of camaraderie and unity among team members, motivating them to test their limits and strive for their personal best. Furthermore, his unwavering commitment to sportsmanship is truly commendable. His focus extends beyond mere results; he genuinely cares that people have the opportunity to try something new, regardless of the outcome. Larry exemplifies the values of showing up, being enthusiastic, and embracing an optimistic and positive mindset.

Rebecca Earp Spirit Award

The Rebecca Earp Spirit Award is given to companies that show incredible passion and support for its athletes while also displaying excellent sportsmanship and class toward other competitors. This competition has been a KCCC staple for many years. With the return to play in 2021, post-pandemic, we were unable to encourage large crowds and spectators so the Spirit Competition took its place on the bench, until we could safely facilitate the contest.

rebecca earp embodies all that this award represents. Throughout her many years of involvement with KCCC – whether as a Company Coordinator, participant, volunteer, or Board Member – Rebecca IS KCCC spirit. You’ve seen her behind the lens at every event capturing your most amazing moments. She’s behind the scenes of our social media spotlighting your unbelievable accomplishments. She’s manning the DJ booth and cheering you on as you cross the finish line. Because of all this, and more, this special recognition is known as the Rebecca Earp Spirit Award.
