Make lifetime memories at JCPRD Summer Camps Everyone has memories of that happy, long-ago summer from their youth. They may include thoughts of running outdoors with the sun on your face, rolling down a hill and the smell of newly-mowed grass, paddling around in a canoe, making arts and crafts with friends, and exploring nature and the great outdoors. Each summer, Johnson County Park & Recreation District summer camps help kids make memories like those that they carry throughout their lifetime. With more than 75 separate camp programs this year, offerings include nature and science, sports and arts, computers, leadership, and much more. We’re confident everyone will find something to their taste. Most full-day camps offer sessions beginning weekly from June 5 to July 31. Other camps start throughout the summer. Camps are offered throughout the county (see the map and addresses on the back cover), and we have programs for ages three through 17.

Parents appreciate the comfort of knowing their kids are in a safe, well-supervised, and fun-filled environment with a commitment to activities that promote emotional, intellectual, and physical health. u Earns JCPRD U Credit The JCPRD U initiative, our holistic wellness program designed for youth ages three to 18, applies to all the camps in this guide. This program lets participants earn achievement badges in five wellness dimensions: physical, social, environmental, intellectual, and mindfulness, in order to advance through JCPRD U. Each camp listing includes information on which dimension applies to that program. To learn more about JCPRD U, visit jcprdu.com. To register for JCPRD U, call (913) 826-2950. Remember, if you wait too long, you could miss out on some great memories this summer as our camps are consistently some of JCPRD’s most popular offerings of the entire year and many fill quickly. Register early to assure your best choice of programs! Financial assistance is available for some camps on a limited basis for qualifying families. For grant information and application materials, call (913) 826-3014. You’ll find several additional summer sports camps listed in our May through August Activities Catalog, due out the week of March 27.

Martial Arts Gracie Bullyproof Summer Camp (Ages 5-12)

We will teach your child to use verbal assertiveness to deter bullies and several non-violent self-defense techniques to stay safe if physically assaulted. Importantly, we don’t teach how to punch or kick, since this often does more harm than good. Instead, we use leverage-based control holds to neutralize threats without violence. Numerous school districts have embraced the defensive nature of the Gracie Bullyproof techniques as a reasonable, nonviolent response to bullying and some even host Gracie Bullyproof classes on campus! The bottom line is: we will prepare your child to defend themselves against bullies without turning them into one.
