Make lifetime memories at JCPRD Summer Camps Everyone has memories of that happy, long-ago summer from their youth. They may include thoughts of running outdoors with the sun on your face, rolling down a hill and the smell of newly-mowed grass, paddling around in a canoe, making arts and crafts with friends, and exploring nature and the great outdoors. Each summer, Johnson County Park & Recreation District summer camps help kids make memories like those that they carry throughout their lifetime. With more than 75 separate camp programs this year, offerings include nature and science, sports and arts, computers, leadership, and much more. We’re confident everyone will find something to their taste. Most full-day camps offer sessions beginning weekly from June 5 to July 31. Other camps start throughout the summer. Camps are offered throughout the county (see the map and addresses on the back cover), and we have programs for ages three through 17.

Parents appreciate the comfort of knowing their kids are in a safe, well-supervised, and fun-filled environment with a commitment to activities that promote emotional, intellectual, and physical health. u Earns JCPRD U Credit The JCPRD U initiative, our holistic wellness program designed for youth ages three to 18, applies to all the camps in this guide. This program lets participants earn achievement badges in five wellness dimensions: physical, social, environmental, intellectual, and mindfulness, in order to advance through JCPRD U. Camp Location: Mill Creek Activity Center, Natureplay Preschool, 6518 Vista Dr.

l NATURE EXPLORERS - A tree walk, bird watching, and mud pie making is ahead of us this week!

Join us for a summer full of explorations! Camp activities take place from 1 to 3:30 pm, Monday through Thursday. Summer camp activities will focus on STEAM concepts - Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics. The first four weeks will each focus on a different discipline, while the last four weeks will focus on natural sciences. For more information call (913) 826-2958.

l GARDEN ADVENTURES - Each camper will plant a small garden to take home this week as we explore seeds, the plant life cycle and vegetables.

Camp requirements: Children must be potty trained, bring a water bottle daily, and come to camp wearing sunscreen. We also encourage children to wear bug repellant, a hat, and clothing that can get wet and dirty. A late pick up fee of $1 per minute will apply. A daily snack will be provided that follows the National Commit to Health campaign recommendations. Forms will be emailed prior to camp or you can allow time to fill them out the first day.

Age Requirements: Children must be three years old by the start of the first day of camp. This camp is designed for children who have not yet attended kindergarten. Children who were age-eligible to attend kindergarten during the 2016-2017 school year may not attend preschool camp. Outdoor Policy: Camp will take place rain or shine. A daily portion of the class will be held in Natureplay Preschool’s outdoor classroom. Constructed with innovative plots and powerful characters, you will create your very own comic inspired by timeless pop culture and the realms of other worlds. You will learn to draw, write, and ink in addition to gaining the skillset to provide and receive constructive criticism. Open Studio Lab (Ages 6-15)

Need additional assistance to practice lines for The Theatre in the Park Summer Academy? Need an hour to finish that project from Art Studio? Open Studio allows participants of camps hosted in the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center to have open work time with instructors available as resources. Open Studio is available from 7:30 am to 9 am before instructional time begins, and from 4 pm to 5:30 pm after instructional time ends. Theatrical professionals will work with your young performer every day in all aspects of theatre, ranging from audition techniques to final performance tips in this two week camp for students going into fourth grade through going into ninth grade. Who knew learning about the outdoors could be so much fun? Your child will have plenty to discover with hikes, environmental games, nature crafts, and much more. To complement the weekly theme, we will take a fun, educational field trip or have a special speaker visit us. Enriching stories will be told by our own storytellers. In addition, we will have specially-designed programs led by a park naturalist each week. We’ll have just enough time to cool off with swimming, boating, fishing, and practicing archery each week. Camp hours: 7:30 am to 5:30 pm with scheduled activities between 9 am and 4 pm. Enrollment is limited to 60 at Ernie Miller Park and 55 at Shawnee Mission Park. Your young naturalist will discover the diversity of life in local prairies, forests, and streams through this hands-on enrichment camp. Ernie Miller Park will be our base camp. Outdoor Discovery Camp Open House

Parents, are you considering what camp to sign your child up for? On April 13 we invite you to visit Shelter #12 in Shawnee Mission Park and meet Outdoor Discovery Camp Director Molly Postlewait. Stop by anytime between 4 pm and 7 pm. During this special event, check out activities like fishing and camp traditions, and ask questions about the camp schedule and safety procedures. Photography Camp (Ages 12-15)

Do you love to take pictures? Do you want to learn more about photography? Experience four days of nature photography with us and meet new friends with the same passion. In addition to classroom-style instruction on camera basics and practical tips for nature photography, campers go on daily adventures to practice skills in the field. Trips include TimberRidge Adventure Center, Overland Park Arboretum, and the Kansas City Zoo. The 4-day camp concludes with a photo exhibit; parents are invited to attend and view the best of campers’ photos on display at Ernie Miller Nature Center. Participants must bring their own digital cameras for use during all activities and a t-shirt for end of camp photo project. Other activities during camp may include boating, swimming and nature hikes. Participants will meet at Ernie Miller Nature Center. What is it that makes water so special? Spend the week exploring our various water resources. Learn about the water cycle and how to protect our lakes, streams, and rivers. Take a hike in a creek, catch crawdads and go seining. Use dip nets to discover critters in a pond and look closely at water microorganisms. Race kayaks across a lake and try to catch a monster fish! We will teach your child to use verbal assertiveness to deter bullies and several non-violent self-defense techniques to stay safe if physically assaulted. Importantly, we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t teach how to punch or kick, since this often does more harm than good. Instead, we use leverage-based control holds to neutralize threats without violence. Numerous school districts have embraced the defensive nature of the Gracie Bullyproof techniques as a reasonable, nonviolent response to bullying and some even host Gracie Bullyproof classes on campus!
