This site required updated turf and perennial planting with an addendum requesting JBC redesigned the front entrance plaza to the site. Our solution includes undulating waves of Karl Foerster and Mondo grass,complete with Cast-in-Place Benches.

Wayfinding & their locations
Slater, located between Ames and Des Moines, is a small town with a population of around 1,500 residents. Known for its strong sense of community and active lifestyle, Slater is situated at the confluence of two major bike trails, the Heart of Iowa and the High Trestle Trail. This unique positioning warranted JBC to re-design an adjacent dump site into a new recreational facility intended to serve as a gateway and gathering space for all those who crossed these paths, with the dual purpose of incentivizing transformation of nearby warehouses into potential commercial opportunities.

Proposed illuminated park signs tie Slater identity with the rail-trail aesthetic. (day and night views).
Proposed trail kiosk depicts places of interest in Slater and next stops on the High Trestle and Heart of Iowa Trails. It features space for pinning up fliers and has lighting. The gateway includes the kiosk and two arches.

warrants the modification of Slater’s dump site to better accommodate on Main Street where a gathering space once stood, the town is in need while supporting outdoor recreation. The site is organized into rooms that the space feel intimate and comfortable.
