On May 2, 2014, Rodney D. Bennett addressed a crowd of hundreds who gathered to witness his inauguration as the 10th president of The University of Southern Mississippi. Bennett’s inaugural address to the Southern Miss community was an honest reflection of the institution’s progress over the past year and further evidence that he is uniquely equipped to lead Southern Miss into a new era.

Jodi Ryder, health education and promotion director for Student Health Services, and Dr. Virginia Crawford, director of Student Health Services, submitted a grant application on behalf of The University of Southern Mississippi to the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation and were awarded a $250,000 grant for the “Health is Golden” initiative. On March 6, 2014, the University officially kicked off the campaign, a movement to create and sustain a culture of wellness on the Southern Miss campuses.

With more than 15 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, Shonna Brown ’01 is currently the senior associate commissioner and CFO of the America East Conference.

Brown’s passion for college sports began at an early age, blossoming as a student worker in the University’s Department of Athletics. In time, Brown found herself immersed in the field and enamored with the environment of college athletics.

When they made the decision to adopt, David Bundy ’89 and wife Lisa Munsch Bundy ’95 knew the commitment to expanding their family would be faced with trials and tribulations. But it wasn’t until the couple experienced a civil war, political unrest, violent protests and a governmental overthrow during the process of adopting their four children from Kiev that the Alabama couple discovered just how difficult their journey would be.

NOTES FROM HOME It is difficult to believe that my time as president of the Southern Miss Alumni Association has come to an end. Reflecting on the past year, I can say without reservation it has been an honor and a CLASS NOTES privilege to serve the constituents of this great organization.

During my presidency, many events transpired unique to the timing of my appointment. On May 2, as part of the formal inauguration ceremony, I was provided the opportunity to congratulate SNAPSHOTS and officially welcome Rodney D. Bennett as the 10th president of The University of Southern Mississippi on behalf of the Southern Miss Alumni Association and the more than 120,000 alumni across the globe. Although faced with unforeseen challenges at the start of his term, Dr. Bennett’s leadership during one of the most challenging times in the history of our great institution illustrated ALUMNI AUTHORS his commitment to our alumni and Southern Miss.

On Feb. 10, 2013, an EF-4 tornado struck the southern edge of the University’s Hattiesburg campus. Then newly appointment president immediately displayed the determined spirit of ALUMNI ALMANAC Southern Miss and has continued to make a difference for our beloved alma mater, a University that is stronger today than it ever has been and an institution well-positioned for future success because of his leadership.

I am proud of the staff of the Alumni Association, who during the aforementioned time were uprooted from their offices after much of the south and east ends of our beloved Ogletree House were damaged during the tornado, yet refused to allow this setback to hinder their ability to continue to serve our alumni. I was awestruck at the financial support that poured in from alumni and friends of the institution during the campus beautification campaign and was pleased at the speed in which the staff was able to return to the Ogletree House. The team of architects and contractors selected to complete the reconstruction have worked tirelessly to restore this campus treasured facility to its exact condition prior to Feb. 10, 2013, and I look forward to the grand reopening of the historic structure, scheduled for Sept. 5, 2014.

Throughout my presidency, I was allotted the opportunity to travel and meet alumni from across the nation. Whether an athletic event, the Association’s Annual Homecoming festivities or the commencement ceremonies, some of my favorite moments of the past year involved visiting with alumni and listening to their Golden Eagle memories.

Lastly, Legacy recruitment has been one of the primary initiatives of the organization during my term as president. It is my hope this initiative continues to grow and develop for years to come. I am proud to share that my two children, as well as two nephews, have chosen Southern Miss during my term on the Association’s executive committee. I am a firm believer that recruitment of children and grandchildren is crucial to the success of the University.

The University is enjoying an exciting and promising time in history, and alumni across the nation are contributing to that success. Our Association is strong, and the volunteer leadership and staff are committed to making a positive impact on our beloved institution. With your continued support and involvement, we can take Southern Miss…

The University of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast Library is hosting a new exhibit featuring artists who grew up on the Mississippi Gulf Coast and express its beauty in their art.

Mary Beth Barnett and Patti Sneed, sisters who were raised in Gulfport, paint vivid images of plants, animals, beach scenes and bayous of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Barnett, having discovered watercolors later in life, finds

her favorite challenges are exploring with color and discovering the essence of a subject. Sneed, who does not consider herself an artist for show, loves watercolor and sketching as a hobby.

For Long Beach resident Xavier Carrubba, her interest in art began in elementary school when a nun introduced her to watercolors. Having started with art classes at Gulf Park College for Women, she eventually earned a Bachelor of Fine

Arts degree from Southern Miss.

She has experimented with different techniques, mediums, styles and forms of art from paintings on canvas to ceramics, egg shell decorations, painting on furniture, backdrops for college plays, sand sculptures, pottery, murals and wine glasses.

The exhibit will be on display through July 15 during regular library hours.

Selected pieces will be available for sale.

Nutrition Students Assist Edwards Street Fellowship Center Through Service-Learning Senior nutrition students at The University of Southern Mississippi recently applied what they learned from shelves of books to help individuals served through shelves of a community food pantry.

In a spring 2014 capstone course, led by Dr. Holly Huye of the College of Health’s Department of Nutrition and Food Systems, students participated in a service-learning project that assisted the Edwards Street Fellowship Center (ESFC).

The ESFC is a nonprofit organization on the southeast side of Hattiesburg that helps individuals and families with various needs. More than 1,000 families from eight

University of Southern Mississippi seniors majoring in nutrition and food systems participated in a service-learning project for their capstone course.

Pine Belt counties are served by its food pantry. The nutrition students helped sort and prepare food for delivery or service, hosted informational tables, and conducted

Southern Miss Students Earn SCUBA Certification EAGLE CLUB ATHLETIC NEWS

CLASS NOTES At the end of the 2014 spring semester, 11 Southern Miss students enrolled in the School of Human Performance and Recreation’s SNAPSHOTS Self-Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus (SCUBA) course.

Exams do not always involve No. 2 pencils and Scantrons, a lesson quickly learned by students enrolled in the School of Human Performance and Recreation’s SCUBA course at The University of Southern Mississippi.

At the end of the 2014 spring semester, 11 Southern Miss students piled into a van bound for Vortex Springs, a camping and diving park near Ponce de Leon, Fla., to complete their certification training.

Diving skills learned at the Southern Miss M.C. Johnson Natatorium were put to the test in open water. Basic skills evaluation included navigating by compass and clearing a face mask full of water without surfacing. Emergency ascent and air sharing were some of the emergency procedures tested.

After a three-year hiatus, this is the first group of students to earn their open water diver certification through the Southern Miss program.

Leaders with a vested interest in the economic potential of maritime industries and marine technologies along the northern Gulf Coast gathered on June 5, for the 2014 Marine Technologies Economic Forum hosted by The University of Southern Mississippi on its Gulf Park campus in Long Beach.

The forum, which featured an address

by Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant, included the establishment of a partnership between Southern Miss and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) in Massachusetts, which is known as the world’s largest private, nonprofit oceanographic research institution.

According to Dr. Monty Graham, chair of the Southern Miss Department of Marine Science, the two institutions have agreed to work together in developing marine technology programs.

During the forum, Bryant expressed the importance of investing research toward marine technology, which can, in turn, provide an economic benefit to the State of Mississippi and beyond.

Southern Miss President Rodney D. Bennett explained how University students are engaging in research resulting in real-world solutions. He noted that these students understand the importance of the Gulf Coast to our state’s industry partnerships, energy, economy and potential for future growth and development.

The forum included speakers, as well as panel discussions, with representatives from various organizations, government

offices and businesses, who offered their expertise in the economic potential of marine technologies along the Gulf Coast. Panel discussion topics ranged from “Local, State and Federal Needs in the Gulf Region” to “How Do We Get There? Developing a Pathway Forward.”

The forum concluded with a private tour of the WHOI’s research vessel Atlantis and deep submergence vehicle Alvin, which are both docked at the Port of Gulfport.

MDOT Presents Check to Help with Construction of New Pedestrian Pathway

The University of Southern Mississippi’s plan to build a new pedestrian pathway on the Hattiesburg campus received a major boost on June 4, when Southern District Highway Commissioner Tom King presented a check for $683,560 to the University.

Southern Miss President Rodney D. Bennett accepted the check provided by the Mississippi Department of Transportation as part of a grant, which originated through Transportation Alternative Program funds distributed by the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act. The grant is an 80/20 match – meaning that MDOT contributes $683,560 toward construction of the new pathway, while Southern Miss pays approximately $171,000.

The proposed pathway will extend approximately 1,400 feet, establishing a link between Scianna Hall and Pride Field. The pedestrian corridor will run along the front entrance to Century Park South – a new residential complex nearing completion.

The project is being designed and managed by Neel-Schaffer Inc. Construction and is expected to begin this fall with an estimated completion timetable of 18 months.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Freedom Summer, the photographs of award-winning civil rights photographer Herbert Randall Jr. are being displayed in The University of Southern Mississippi’s Cook Library Art Gallery and Learning Commons Gallery. The exhibit, titled Freedom Summer, 1964: The Photographs of Herbert Randall features 43 of nearly 2,000 photographs taken during the historic summer of 1964.

Randall served as the official photographer during Freedom Summer, when an alliance of local residents, out-of-state college students and voting rights organizers from all across the U.S. gathered in Hattiesburg to secure the right for African Americans to vote in Mississippi. During that summer, Randall captured 1,759 images, which he donated to University Archives at Southern Miss.

Additionally, Randall’s work is permanently represented in the collections at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the New York Public Library and the Library of Congress.

Bobs Tusa, author of the 2001 book Faces of Freedom Summer: The Photographs of Herbert Randall, wrote that Randall was an African and Native American from New York who was only 28 when he was awarded the prestigious John Hay Whitney Fellowship Award for Creative Photography.

Shortly after receiving the award, he met and befriended Sanford Rose “Sandy” Leigh, director of the Freedom Summer Project in Hattiesburg, who requested Randall use his fellowship to travel to Hattiesburg and serve as the official photographer.

Dr. Steven R. Moser, dean of the College of Arts and Letters, recognizes the importance of the historical exhibit and says he is proud to have the college partner with University Libraries to showcase Randall’s photos.

The exhibit is open to the public and will run through Sept. 6.

After 20 years of distinguished service as an English professor at The University of Southern Mississippi, Dr. Ellen Weinauer has been named the next dean of the University’s Honors College.

Weinauer came to Southern Miss in 1994 as an assistant professor in the English department. An active scholar in the field of 19th-century American literature, Weinauer also has directed the Women’s Studies Program and the Graduate Program in English. For the past two years, she has served as the director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program.

Weinauer has also taught numerous honors world literature courses and has mentored many students through the honors thesis process.

Weinauer takes over for Dr. David R. Davies, who is stepping down from the position he held for the past seven years to focus on his role as director of the British Studies Program and the Chateau Program (formerly the Abbey Program). He also plans to spend more time as a classroom instructor.

Amount of Legacy Scholarships FOUNDATION NEWS Awarded Continue to Break Previous Records

ecruiting children and grandchildren of alumni has incessantly been one of the Southern Miss Alumni Association’s top initiatives. Last year the Association FROM THE ARCHIVES awarded nine Legacy scholarships and this year, that number was surpassed, awarding 10 children and grandchildren the Legacy Scholarship honor.

Established in 2003, and named in honor of former Alumni Association Executive Director THE Bob Pierce in 2008, theARTS Legacy Scholarship helps perpetuate Southern Miss legacies by providing financial assistance to children and grandchildren of active Alumni Association members.

Colin comes from a rich Southern Miss history of five Southern Miss graduates before him and is the grandson of Colleen Whittington Cameron, Alumni Association member and former professor in the business department.

Whitney Mei Jun Dees

A native of Lucedale, Whitney graduated from Faith Academy, where she was an honor student and involved in numerous organizations and activities such as the symphonic band, National Honor Society, Friends of Exceptional Children Club and Robotics Club. She also served as the vice president for youth group missions at Faith Academy. Whitney was on the honor roll throughout high school and received the Outstanding Junior Award as well as the U.S. Achievement Academy National Science Award.

She has completed many hours of community service while volunteering for the Ronald McDonald House, Habitat for Humanity and the American Red Cross. She is the daughter of Alumni Association member Kim Dees.

Myranda Rena Gallagher

Myranda attended Ocean Springs High School and is a native of Ocean Springs.

She was captain of the varsity cheerleading team, played varsity softball, and was a member of many school clubs, including Mu Alpha Theta, National Honors Society, Future Educators Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Ambassador Mentor Program. She was selected by her teachers for the class Hall of Fame and was voted for the Homecoming court and prom queen.

Myranda is active in the community and has participated in many communityservice projects, such as the local breast cancer walk, food preparation and serving at the Lord is My Help food kitchen, Deuce Noblitt Bridge Walk and Golf Tournament and organizing Polar Express Day for local elementary schools. She is the daughter of Life Members Steve and Dianna Gallagher.

Frances S. Latady

Frances Latady, a native of Pascagoula, attended Pascagoula High School. In addition to being involved in many school organizations such as varsity tennis, Interact Club, Jeune Esprit Club and Goula Girls, she was a student in the Culinary Arts class at the Applied Technology Center. She was elected to the board of directors and vice president of the Interact Club, as well as class secretary and treasurer. An honors student all four years, Frances was the fourth place winner

As a varsity cheerleader, she was the recipient of the squad Leadership Award and was a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She was also a member of Student Council and the Beta Club, where she completed many community-service projects. Laken is a member of First Baptist Hattiesburg and Forrest County 4-H, and participated in the Covington County Distinguished Young Woman Scholarship Program, where she was the recipient of the Spirit Award. She is the daughter of Alumni Association member Deena Lowery.

Jacob Gates McNeese

A native of Hattiesburg, Jacob graduated from Oak Grove High School, where he played on the varsity soccer team and was awarded Most Valuable Defender for three years in a row. He was also a member of the Young Republican’s Club, First Priority, Chess Club and Key Club. Mobile Resident Receives Mickey Marshall Endowed Scholarship

The Mickey Marshall Endowed Scholarship was presented to AROUND CAMPUS ClaytonNEWS Herring of Daphne, Ala., during the Mobile Bay Crawfish Boil on June 1. Clayton was unable to attend, and accepting the award on his behalf was his father, Bobby Herring ’85. The Mobile Bay Alumni Chapter held its Third Annual Mobile Bay Crawfish Boil on June 1, 2014, at the Historic Malbis Community Center in Daphne. Southern Miss alumni and fans enjoyed hundreds of pounds of boiled crawfish, live music and a silent auction filled with priceless Southern Miss memorabilia. Seymour made a special appearance and enjoyed visiting with fans.

Each year, the Mobile Bay Chapter invites local high school students who are interested in attending Southern Miss, as well as current students, to attend the crawfish boil, making this a unique opportunity for alumni, current students and incoming students from the Mobile Bay area to socialize together. Proceeds from this event benefit the Mickey Marshall Endowed Scholarship for an incoming freshman from the Mobile Bay area.

The University of Southern Mississippi Alumni Association recently welcomed Lauren Richards as the organization’s new manager of programs.

Lauren, a Ridgeland, Miss., native, earned a degree in elementary education from The University of Southern Mississippi in 2011. Following the completion of her undergraduate degree, Lauren was employed as a leadership development consultant for national Kappa Delta Sorority, where she traveled the country working with collegiate

women to improve their leadership skills, organizational procedures and recruitment processes, in addition to starting new Kappa Delta chapters at select universities.

Following her time as a leadership consultant, Lauren attended Florida State University, where she earned a master’s degree in higher education and student affairs. While at Florida State, Lauren served as a graduate assistant for the University Honors Program. In this role, she advised students on how to complete the honors curriculum, managed two honors student organizations, and assisted with the interview process for scholarship selection. In addition, Lauren has experience in orientation programs, student-athlete academic advisement and student leadership programs at various institutions.

As the manager of programs, Lauren is the Association’s primary event planner and manager of scholarships.

Among other duties, Lauren will plan and coordinate many of the Association’s external functions, including Homecoming festivities, commencement receptions, reunions, and will oversee Growing Up Gold, a legacy engagement program designed to create a black

and gold bond with children and grandchildren of Southern Miss alumni.

This University of Southern Mississippi legacy was raised a Southern Miss fan! Each member of her immediate family graduated from the university, and her sister will be a senior at Southern Miss this fall. “I couldn’t be more excited about returning to my alma mater and joining the Alumni Association team,” shared Lauren. “I look forward to collaborating with Association staff as we continue the tradition of excellence in providing programs and opportunities for our alumni.”

“The Alumni Association received more than 50 applications for the manager of programs position,” said Jerry DeFatta, executive director of the Alumni Association. “Following a very competitive interview process, there was no doubt that Lauren was the right candidate for the position. We are fortunate to have been able to hire someone with such a diverse background for this important role within our organization and look forward to the continued growth of our programs and initiatives under her leadership.”

Peets Buffett, Elmo Lang Memorial Scholarships Awarded by Alumni Association The Southern Miss Alumni Association has announced Chrystal C. Noble as the recipient of the Elmo Lang Memorial scholarship and Sarah Elizabeth Rhett and Victoria Lane Geiger as recipients of this year’s Peets Buffett Scholarship.

Chrystal, a native of Gautier, attended Gautier High School where she was a member of the Gautier band and color guard. She was a member of the Beta Club and the Key Club, where she participated in many community service projects such as annual food drives for Our Daily Bread, the annual Coastal Cleanup Project, and local hospital and nursing home visits.

Chrystal was also a member of the Multicultural Club and French Club. As

an incoming freshman, Chrystal plans to major in nursing.

Lizzie, an English major, is a three-time recipient of the Peets Buffett Scholarship and a rising junior at Southern Miss. She has been involved on campus from Sarah Elizabeth Rhett the start of her freshman year and is currently a member of Reformed University Fellowship and Chi Omega Sorority, where she is the assistant philanthropy chair. Lizzie is on the Dean’s List and was selected as a finalist for the Freshman of the Year Award in 2013.

Scholarship recipients must be active members of The Legacy and must exemplify qualities such as outstanding service to The Legacy, strong leadership skills and a commitment to the University. The “Passing of the Gavel” concluded the reception as outgoing President Torrel Bridges presented The Legacy gavel to incoming President Sophie Saizan, and Board Member Nicholas Fountain led the group in the singing of the University’s alma mater.

Legacy President Torrel Bridges Named Student Organization President of the Year Torrel Bridges was named the 2013-14 Student Organization President of the Year at the Office of Student Activities’ Annual Presidents’ and Advisors’ Luncheon on April 29, 2014. Torrel served as the 2013-14 president of The Legacy, the student chapter of the Alumni Association, and has also served as vice president, board member and Legacy member.

“Torrel understands the importance of carrying on our University’s rich traditions and works hard to ensure that they are still alive and well when his future children and grandchildren attend Southern Miss,” said Laurie Benvenutti, Legacy advisor. “This Legacy President Torrel Bridges receives the award is very well-deserved, and Torrel has been an 2013-14 President of the Year Award from Emily Holmes, assistant director for Student outstanding campus leader during his college career.”

The Legacy was also recognized at this year’s luncheon as a nominee in the Advisor of the Year category for the second year in a row, and freshman board member Autumn Sobel was a finalist for the 2013-14 Emerging Leader Award.

Nominations for a variety of awards were accepted from students, faculty and staff representing the more than 220 student organizations on campus, and a committee made final selections. The top five nominees in each category were recognized at the luncheon, with the award winner receiving a plaque.

Chi Omega Wins Legacy Membership Drive Competition

The Legacy, the student chapter of the Southern Miss Alumni Association, hosted a friendly membership drive competition between chapters within the Panhellenic Council, the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Interfraternity Council. The objective of the competition was to recognize the chapter from each council that obtained the highest percentage of Legacy members. Almost 65% of Chi Omega members were also members of The Legacy, making them the Panhellenic Council winners. Thank you, ladies of Chi Omega, for helping to keep the history and traditions of Southern Miss alive through your Legacy memberships!

Golden Grads Reminisce During the 2014 Reunion The much-anticipated 2014 Golden Grad Reunion was held April 25-26. The Southern Miss Alumni Association welcomed alumni from the classes of 1963, 64 and 65 to the Hattiesburg campus, creating a unique and memorable reunion experience!

The weekend consisted of a full schedule of events, including a welcome reception at the golden eagle exhibit at the Hattiesburg Zoo, a breakfast of memories, University tours, special exhibit in the University Archives, a luncheon featuring the Spirit of Southern vocal performance group and induction into the Golden Circle.

“My favorite part of the reunion experience was simply seeing many of my classmates and friends and remembering the special times we had together,” said Tom Potter, president of the class of 1964.

“I think everyone enjoyed going to University Archives and seeing photos, yearbooks and issues of The Student Printz from that era,” Potter continued. “Everyone was talking up a storm! Luckyday Foundation Renews Support for SNAPSHOTS Scholarship Program at Southern Miss

Since 2001, the Luckyday Citizenship Scholars AUTHORS Program has ALUMNI impacted the lives of more than 1,400 students at The University of Southern Mississippi through the gift ALUMNI ALMANAC of scholarship, service, leadership and community engagement.

In April 2014, the Luckyday Foundation renewed funding for the program at Southern Miss for another four years with a gift commitment of $6.9 million to The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation. This gift will provide 75 incoming freshmen with $5,000-per-year scholarships, which are renewable for three years after the students’ freshman year, provided they continue to meet eligibility requirements.

Since its initial gift in 2001, the Luckyday Foundation has generously provided more than $24.4 million in gifts and commitments to the USM

Foundation, making the Luckyday Foundation the University’s most generous benefactor.

Founded by the late Frank Rogers Day, the Luckyday Foundation funds scholarships for Mississippi high school seniors who are exemplary students with outstanding leadership skills and a commitment to their community.

Since welcoming its inaugural class in 2002, the Luckyday Citizenship Scholars Program at Southern Miss has grown into a thriving group of student leaders who graduate and go on to a diverse range of professions, including doctors, international volunteers and ministry leaders.

The Luckyday Citizenship Scholars Program has been recognized by state, national and international organizations as a best practice in student development and for its efficiency and impact as a scholarship

provider. Luckyday Citizenship Scholars Program staff members and University faculty affiliated with the initiative are invited to present several times a year at national conferences on innovative programming, student engagement and student success.

“The Luckyday Foundation has invested in The University of Southern Mississippi for more than a decade. As a result, Southern Miss has been able to shape a life-changing program that is truly unique in all of higher education,” said Dr. Larry Sparkman, director of the Luckyday Citizenship Scholars Program. “Our students find a program specifically tailored to both challenge and support their efforts to grow as a student and citizen while capitalizing on the wonderful opportunities offered through the Southern Miss community.

We are truly grateful to be a part of the vision of the Luckyday Foundation and the generous gifts of Frank Day.” The generosity of the Luckyday Foundation fosters student growth both inside and outside the classroom while helping move the Hattiesburg community forward. Luckyday Citizenship Scholars are introduced to the philosophy of servant leadership through a special class designed for the program, where they learn to be leaders by choosing to serve first. Leadership opportunities follow their freshman year, and a large percentage of students go far beyond the requirements of the scholarship, providing leadership for the program and support for their fellow students.

Students are challenged to make a difference in their communities by actively participating in local charitable organizations. Since 2002, Luckyday Citizenship Scholars have completed more than 200,000 hours of community service in and around the Hattiesburg area.

Support from the Luckyday Foundation also provides scholarships

for students to study abroad in the program of their choice. The Luckyday Study Abroad Scholarship is a $4,000 competitive scholarship open to sophomore, junior and senior Luckyday Scholars who have completed at least 30 credit hours and are in good standing with the Luckyday Program.

In 2011, the Luckyday Foundation made a $4 million gift commitment to the USM Foundation to be used for construction of new student housing.

Designated as Luckyday Citizenship Hall, the new facility will be one of three buildings included in Century Park South, a residence hall complex that will provide 954 beds for freshmen and other scholarship students. Luckyday Citizenship Hall will house Luckyday scholarship students and the Luckyday program offices. This designated community will provide an environment for freshmen scholars to be encouraged by upperclassmen mentors and develop a supportive group that guides their transition into the university experience.

“The Luckyday Citizenship Scholars Program is one of the most successful scholarship programs in the history

of our institution,” said Southern Miss President Rodney Bennett.

As an illustration of its continued support for the nursing program at The University of Southern Mississippi, NEWSServices, AROUND CAMPUS HMP Nursing Inc., of Hattiesburg recently made generous gift commitments totaling $125,000 to be used toward the University’s Nursing Building Campaign and to endow an academic EAGLE CLUB scholarship.

“HMP Nursing is proud of USM and its many accomplishments. The new College NEWS of NursingATHLETIC building is just an example of the growth and prosperity of the University,” said HMP Nursing Services Director Jay Slaughter. “We realized NOTES FROM HOME the building that is in place at this time can no longer provide the requirements needed for a quality education.”

The gift commitments CLASS NOTES will include $100,000 for the Nursing Building Campaign to help construct Asbury Hall and $25,000 to establish a scholarship in the name of HMP Nursing SNAPSHOTS founders and owners Mike and Janet McElroy. Requirements to receive the new scholarship include a 3.0 grade point average, Mississippi residency and financial need.

“Our family realizes the importance of continuing ALUMNI AUTHORS education through the College of Nursing at The University of Southern Mississippi. The quality of nursing graduates plays a vital role in both the Hattiesburg community and ALUMNI ALMANAC surrounding areas. It is a great honor for our family to support the University,” said Michael McElroy, Jr., son of Mike and Janet. Michael serves as the president of Bedford Health Properties, the parent company of HMP Nursing Services.

Slaughter emphasized the importance of HMP Nursing’s relationship with the University, noting that the company employs a large number of Southern Miss graduates.

“HMP is committed to continued education for our employees and the community at large,” said Slaughter. “Scholarships have been offered on the community college level for more than a decade. We are pleased to start at the university level with USM.” In January 2012, The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation announced an $8 million fundraising campaign to construct a new facility for the University’s College of Nursing. The campaign was kick-started with a $4 million gift from the Asbury Foundation of Hattiesburg – a gift that will name the building Asbury Hall.

The state-of-the-art facility, which will be located on the western edge of the Hattiesburg campus, will increase the square footage dedicated to the College of Nursing by 135 percent, providing much-needed space for faculty and students and replacing a facility that can no longer meet the requirements of nursing education.

The additional space will also allow for an increase in nursing enrollment from the current 550 students to more than 800 and expand new programs in the College of Nursing through student interactive areas, an enlarged and enhanced clinical simulation lab, computer labs, and classrooms that will promote the acquisition of knowledge in a positive and interactive learning environment.

With HMP Nursing’s gift commitment, the University’s Nursing Building Campaign has accumulated approximately $5.7 million of the $8 million goal in private funds.

Dr. Katherine Nugent, professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at Southern Miss, said the gift commitments from HMP Nursing Services demonstrate the cohesive bond that exists between the University and business entities in the Pine Belt.

“As a result of this funding, a large classroom in the new building will be named for the McElroy Family and HMP Nursing Services,” said Nugent. “Asbury Hall will allow us to develop new programs, expand enrollment, and increase opportunities to partner with the Hattiesburg community.”

HMP Nursing Services, Inc., has served the healthcare industry throughout South Mississippi for more than 15 years and offers services that are tailored to meet the needs of individual patients within a medical facility or at home.

All services are rendered by experienced personnel and are available seven days a week, 24 hours a day.

“The momentum that has been building for the new College of Nursing building is tremendous,” said Slaughter. “The new building space will not only add to the level of continued excellence in education, but will add a new level of recruitment for both students and faculty at Southern Miss.”

USM Foundation Hosts 2014 Honor Club Black Tie Gala The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation hosted its annual Black Tie Gala on March 28, 2014, at the Beau Rivage Resort and Casino in Biloxi, Miss.

Master of ceremonies and president of the USM Foundation Rex Kelly opened the night’s festivities, followed by a formal welcome from University president, Rodney Bennett.

The evening’s entertainment was provided by the Southern Belletones, the female a cappella ensemble directed by graduate students in choral conducting. The ensemble is comprised of Southern Miss female students ranging from freshmen to graduate students. The Southern Belletones also closed the formal ceremony with a performance of the Alma Mater.

Wilton Jackson, a junior Broadcast Journalism major from Jackson, Miss. and recipient of several Foundation scholarships, spoke about how his experience at Southern Miss has been greatly enhanced through the gift of scholarship.

In addition to maintaining a 3.8 GPA, Jackson had the THEhas ARTS opportunity to gain valuable experience as a writer for The Student Printz, a news reader for WUSM-Southern Miss Radio and an online correspondent for USA Today.

NEWS AROUND CAMPUS Shannon Fleming, executive director of the Foundation, reflected on highlights from the past year, including an increase of more than 60 percent in the market value of the endowment in the past five years, allowing the Foundation to surpass the $100 million EAGLE CLUB mark in total assets at more than $107 million. This allowed more than $3 million to be allocated for scholarships benefitting more than 1,700 students, as well as support provided directly to the ATHLETIC NEWS University for campus construction and maintenance.

Gold Rush Raises More Than $200,000 in 36 Hours

After counting down the top ten reasons to give to the Southern Miss Gold Rush, The University of Southern Mississippi Foundation presented the University with a birthday gift of $200,391.90 at the University’s 2014 Founders’ Day ceremony on Thursday, March 27.

During the Southern Miss Gold Rush on March 25-26, the USM Foundation utilized social media platforms to encourage alumni, students, employees and friends to support their favorite areas of the University. The total amount raised represents 326 gifts from donors in 38 U.S. states, England, China and Hong Kong.

“We were truly humbled by the outpouring of support from our alumni, friends and students,” said Megan Burkes, manager of annual giving and special projects. “It is such an exciting time to be a part of the Southern Miss family.”

The USM Foundation hosted a similar smaller-scale fundraising event in 2013 in support of the Southern Miss Campus Beautification Campaign. Last year’s Day of Giving raised $130,234.46. The Foundation staff wasn’t sure what to expect from the Gold Rush since support for the Day of Giving focused on a natural disaster.

“This intense, concentrated crowdfunding method of fundraising

was a direct result of the tornado relief effort last year,” said Shannon Fleming, executive director of the USM Foundation. “What we learned was this same concept can be used for ‘noncrisis’ fundraising as an effective way to encourage people to give utilizing strong communication through social media and a sense of urgency.”

Burkes said there was a strong focus on student support to help generate awareness of the campaign. “With the use of social media platforms, we had the ability to create hype worldwide.

Thanks to the students’ engagement, #USMgoldrush was officially a trending topic on Twitter.

“The Gold Rush gave each USM Foundation staff member the opportunity to work together in an organized, concise 36-hour period,” said Fleming. “The result is a stronger appreciation and respect of each other and a reminder of how working together as a team can be incredibly beneficial to the cause.”

Burkes offered her gratitude to the Office of University Communications, iModules, Hederman Brothers, JMH Graphics and The Focus Group for their efforts in making the Southern Miss Gold Rush a success.

The USM Foundation looks forward to another successful campaign in March 2015.

Bennett took the stage in Bennett Auditorium to address the crowd of hundreds who gathered to witness his inauguration as the 10th president of The University of Southern Mississippi while countless others viewed the ceremony online. “I cannot tell you how much joy I have in my heart on this special occasion and how much this celebration means to me,” expressed Bennett. “Thank you for this moment. I’m grateful to each and every person who has touched my life and led me to this moment, and I am excited to call The University of Southern Mississippi and the city of Hattiesburg my home.”

Entwined with his appreciation for the opportunity that has been presented to him, coupled with his commitment to move the University forward, Bennett’s inaugural address to the Southern Miss community was an honest reflection of the institution’s progress over the past year and further evidence that this former vice president for Student Affairs from the University of Georgia is uniquely equipped with the proper tools to proficiently lead Southern Miss into a new era.

Bennett then touched on the newly formed strategic planning council that has begun work reviewing the University’s current vision, mission and values. “They will also work to develop strategic directions for the University moving forward,” the president explained.

I am hopeful that the strategic planning council’s dialogue with the campus community will result in a strategic plan that complements my vision for the University.”

Moving forward, Bennett outlined his broader vision as president and the six critical areas in which he will focus. “My larger vision includes intentional focus on ensuring student success, expanding enrollment strategies, enhancing academic instruction, fostering greater focus on research, bolstering economic and community partnerships and maximizing human potential. I am confident that as we focus on these key areas, The University of Southern Mississippi will become the institution of choice for high-achieving students throughout the state of Mississippi and beyond.”

Lastly, Bennett thanked the commissioner and members of the members of the Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning for this “amazing opportunity” to serve as president of The University of Southern Mississippi, and additionally, he recognized faculty, staff, students, alumni, family and friends for joining him on this monumental moment.

Dr. Michael Adams, president emeritus of The University of Georgia under whom Bennett served as vice president, acted as the guest speaker for the ceremony. He touched on the historical significance of the occasion for the University and for the state of Mississippi, with Bennett being the first African American to hold the office.

“This is a major appointment at one of the state’s most cherished institutions,” stated Adams in regard to this historic milestone. “The door of opportunity is symbolically opening today much wider in Mississippi because of this appointment.”

As Bennett addressed the Southern Miss community in closing, he spoke about the University’s past and the opportunities that lie ahead in the future. “For more than 104 years, our institution’s fundamental purpose has remained consistent—To impact the lives of our students, their families and our communities through the high-quality educational opportunities offered here at Southern Miss. Each of you has the ability to help support this purpose. We have already demonstrated that when we come together, great things are possible, and I look forward to our future together.”

ith a desire to always want to know more, Emily DeVoe ’14 has been perpetually curious.

This recent University of Southern Mississippi broadcast journalism graduate from Mobile, Ala., recognized as early as the fifth grade that she enjoyed talking with people and learning their stories.

When it was time to attend college, DeVoe “threw the dart” and set off to attend Southern Miss, a university close to home that had a suitable program to fit her journalistic needs. “The benefits that I received from Southern Miss are so much more than I ever could have imagined,” shared DeVoe. “I definitely feel that the things I learned during my time in the School of Mass Communication and Journalism not only made me successful as an undergraduate, but also aided me tremendously in my job search.”

At the beginning of May, DeVoe learned that her fellow classmate Hillary Stepney and she had earned a highly competitive fellowship from Raycom Media Inc. In the five-year history of the fellowship program, this year marks the first time Southern Miss students were selected to participate in the competition, and the first time two students from the same school received both reporting fellowships, which will provide practical, hands-on experience in preparation for careers in the broadcast industry.

As a fellowship recipient, DeVoe was assigned by Raycom to a television station in Wilmington, N.C., where she will be treated as a full-time employee while working for a year as a reporter, an opportunity she says would not have been possible without the guidance of Mary Lou Sheffer, Southern Miss faculty member and head of the broadcast journalism sequence in the University’s School of Mass Communication

and Journalism. “Dr. Sheffer is the glue that holds the program together,” said DeVoe. “Without her, my experience at Southern ATHLETIC NEWS Miss would have been very different. Not only was she a mentor and a role model in my studies, but she’s been a mentor in my life in general. I know without her I would not have the skills or the aspiration that INOTES have now.”

Along with producing the weekly show, she CLASSherNOTES wrote, filmed and edited her own stories, most memorable being the election that took place in Hattiesburg in the fall.

“It was really different covering the election from a student’s perspective. I was at City Hall all day, every day, simply SNAPSHOTS reporting for the love of the story.”

For DeVoe, it is industry icons such as Sally Ann Roberts, Chuck Scarborough and Natalie Allen, who have attended AUTHORS Southern Miss and paved theALUMNI way for students in her field, that give her the inspiration to continue to pursue her passion for journalism. “I especially look up to the Southern Miss alumni ALUMNI ALMANAC who have done really well,” DeVoe shared.

“These individuals came from the same background as I did and received the same education. I hope that I can be as successful as they are.”

In regard to the future for this promising journalist, DeVoe plans to continue to move up in the local side of news. “I know a lot of students who study journalism that have dreams to work at stations as big as CNN, but my future goal is to continue to move up in market size but to stay local. I have really fallen in love with the local station environment. I have found that no matter how big the city, there is a true bond with the community you are living and reporting in.”

Creating a Culture of Wellness

ast summer, the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Mississippi Foundation invited representatives from Mississippi’s eight universities to a summit to discuss grant opportunities based on a university best practice health and wellness model the Foundation developed through their work with numerous universities and colleges throughout Mississippi. Jodi Ryder, health education and promotion director for Student Health Services at The University of Southern Mississippi, attended the summit, and in collaboration with Dr. Virginia Crawford, director of Student Health Services, submitted the University’s grant application to the Foundation and was awarded a $250,000 grant for the “Health is Golden” initiative.

Prior to the grant application, Ryder had previously partnered with University Communications to craft the “Health is Golden” campaign, a University-wide health initiative encouraging students, faculty and staff to eat healthier and exercise more, which became the basis for the grant application. “Before we were made aware of this grant, we had already formed the ‘Health is Golden’ campaign but were limited in our resources,” explained Ryder. “We had put an effort into getting the campaign started, but when the opportunity for this grant came along, we said, ‘Hey, let’s grow this and make it big!’ When applying for this grant we were able to explain what we were already doing in the area of campus-wide health and wellness education, and indicated that we would ultimately use these resources to fund this initiative and make it bigger.”

On March 6, 2014, Southern Miss officially kicked off its “Health is Golden” campaign, a movement to create and sustain a culture of wellness on the University’s campuses that would eventually extend into the surrounding communities and schools.

Beyond the objective to inspire a healthier campus community, the “Health is Golden” campaign is currently aiming to provide faculty and staff with the education and resources to accomplish these goals. Giving individuals an

opportunity to become healthy and create permanent lifestyle changes, Student Health Services created an application process, and selected faculty and staff who were either considered overweight through their body mass index or had high blood pressure, cholesterol or glucose levels to join the “Healthy 100.” “The ‘Healthy 100’ consists of 100 faculty and staff who are committed to making big changes,” said Ryder.

“These individuals are receiving consultations with a full-time dietician and personal trainer and have access to the Payne Center, all made possible through the grant.”

Pre-health assessments and measurements were required upon joining the 100 and will periodically be reassessed to document what changes have occurred. “We have already had huge losses in weight,” Ryder shared. “Program participants are making lifestyle changes, going to the Payne Center more regularly and making modifications in their diets to warrant results.”

Additionally, a piece of the “Health is Golden” initiative includes a project to recognize “Health Champions,” or members of the Southern Miss family who serve as positive role models of health. Posters have been designed to promote these champions, a tactic Student Health Services hopes will influence others.

“Our ‘Health Champions’ aren’t only superb athletes,” explained Ryder. “We want to focus on everyday students who go the extra above and beyond and faculty and staff who have families but still incorporate exercise into their daily routines because they know the importance of being active.”

In the fall, Student Health Services plans to implement a program similar to the ‘Healthy 100’ but geared toward students. This spring, mini health challenges involving students were conducted across campus, Lunch and Learn gatherings were organized to educate the campus community on the importance of fitness and wellness and a partnership with Aramark has been made to highlight some of the healthy eating options offered in the Fresh Food Company, in addition to displaying calorie and fat content on meals offered each day. In the near future, Ryder and her team will work to create

educational videos targeted to students that focus on healthy eating, portion control, fitness, and how to choose healthy options when dining out, among other topics.

With the main focus of the initiative currently centered on students, faculty and staff, Student Health Services would like to eventually reach out into the Hattiesburg community. “We have created a Wellness Council that is comprised of people from the different school boards in Hattiesburg, Oak Grove and Petal, as well as representatives from the mayor’s office and other community organizations.

Although the plan has not been finalized, we are going to reach out into the community to educate people on wellness. We want to let outsiders know that we really do have a healthy campus!”

An Alumna’s Journey to the America East Conference

W

hen Shonna Brown ’01 completed her final track meet as a senior at Hattiesburg High School, she knew then she somehow wanted to be involved in the field of college athletics. As a freshman biology major at The University of Southern Mississippi (with a strong passion for the sport of football), Brown took action by visiting the Department of Athletics and asking how she could be involved.

Immediately taking her under their wing, Athletics employed Brown as a student worker in the areas of compliance and football operations.

Finding herself immersed in the field and enamored with the environment of college athletics, without hesitation Brown changed her major. “When recruits visited campus, I would give tours and explain student life at Southern Miss,” shared Brown. “I slowly transitioned into becoming an assistant to the director of football operations, organizing scout files and the recruiting board and working directly with the Conference USA office. When I realized I could make a career out of working in the industry, I changed my major, and it’s been sports administration ever since.”

alumna moved to Miami, Fla., where she studied at St. Thomas University, obtaining a Master of Science degree in sports administration. While in Miami, Brown began working for the Miami Dolphins in corporate sponsorship and partnership, but after a year and a half, realized she missed the atmosphere of college athletics.

Brown then moved to Pennsylvania to join the Patriot League, which shortly led to an opportunity to transition into a role with the Mid-American Conference in Cleveland. During her time with the Mid-American Conference, Brown experienced hosting a Division I women’s basketball regional and Women’s Final Four tournament first-hand, serving as the tournament director for both events. “I kind of got bit by the NCAA Championship bug,” shared Brown. “Working with these marquee events was an amazing experience and I wanted more!”

With the excitement still fresh, Brown pursued a position with the NCAA, in championships specifically, moving to the organization for approximately three years. Yet again, the void of the college environment was ever present. “I really missed working daily with coaches and student-athletes and being at the membership level,” Brown said. “I believe it is there where one can be most impactful as far as making change in

the world of Division I. This is when I took a position at the America East Conference.”

With more than 15 years of experience in intercollegiate athletics, Brown is currently the senior associate commissioner and CFO of the America East Conference, a collegiate athletic conference affiliated with the NCAA Division I, whose members are located mainly in the Northeastern United States.

As a woman in this male-dominated field, Brown stresses the importance of always “being great.” “You have to be open to learn,” advised Brown. “Even though everyone makes mistakes, when you’re the minority in a group, you don’t have this privilege. The pressure is on, and more eyes are on you. It can be a little taxing at times.”

With that being said, whatever gender, Brown encourages all young people who wish to work in this field to truly know why they want to be in the business. “Someone interested in a position such as mine really needs to understand the sports industry, specifically college athletics,” explained Brown.

“For most people, college athletics looks glamorous, and it is exciting, but it is more than a job, it’s a lifestyle. We work a full day like most, but then competition takes place nights and on weekends. You’re always on!”

This is why Brown stresses the importance of finding a healthy release to keep her grounded and to avoid exhaustion.

“The burnout can happen in the first five years if you don’t find a release and discover your hobbies,” Brown said. “I love to travel internationally and cook. If I can squeeze those in throughout the year, I can work as many hours as possible, finding professional fulfillment in knowing that I’m behind the scenes working for the betterment of student-athlete welfare.”

Additionally, Brown is currently serving on the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Committee where she, along with nine other individuals, are responsible for the NCAA women’s basketball tournament bracket selection. For someone who is very task- and goaloriented, this committee appointment was ideal.

“We first start out in the preseason educating ourselves on over 300 NCAA teams,” explained Brown. “Then we go through the season watching more than 100 women’s basketball games per committee member. It all culminates with four to five days in the committee selection room, debating teams, where they should be seeded and putting together a bracket, knowing as soon as it hits ESPN everybody is going to have an opinion

about it. It is an amazing feeling watching your entire past six to seven months come to this great concluding event and end with somebody being crowned champion.”

Lastly, Brown enjoys mentoring young professionals, and for numerous years has been a part of an educational program titled the Women’s Leadership Symposium, where approximately 100 young administrators gather to learn about the business. “This year, I brought a similar concept to the America East Conference,” shared Brown. “Under the guidance of facilitators such as me, young professionals who have been in the business one to five years were able to participate in a Continuing Education Forum and come together to learn and grow.

It is genuinely important to me that our younger administrators are mentored. They are going to be running this business in a few years, and I love being part of that learning experience!”

When they made the decision to adopt, David Bundy ‘89 and wife Lisa Munsch Bundy ’95 knew the commitment to expanding the Bundy family would be faced with trials and tribulations. But it wasn’t until the couple experienced a civil war, political unrest, violent protests and a governmental overthrow during the process of adopting their four children from Kiev that the Alabama couple discovered just how difficult their journey would be.

I came out at the half dressed as the mascot and got down on my knee as she sat at the table, and I proposed.”

The love story continues to present day, as the Bundy family has grown significantly, thanks to the addition of four children, adopted from Ukraine.

“We didn’t choose to adopt from Ukraine,” David said, a freelance photojournalist and now proud stay-at-home dad. David and Lisa, whose names were placed on numerous waiting lists for domestic adoptions here in the U.S, visited Bridges of Faith Inc., a faith-based group that brings Ukrainian orphans to Alabama during school breaks for cultural enrichment, where they became volunteer chaperones and house parents: “We met our kids there and fell in love with them.”

Through the program, they met Nastia and made plans to adopt her. Later, they met three siblings — 14-year-old Karina, 11-year-old Max and 9-year-old Alla — and decided their home could handle four children with some slight renovations and a lot of love.

The Hattiesburg native’s journey to becoming a father of four is compelling and complicated. When David and Lisa traveled to Kiev, the family had planned to return together when all four adoptions were completed. The Bundy family saw first-hand the violence in Independence Square and the tension with Russia while staying in their downtown apartment, where bullets flying past the windows were a common sight and homemade bomb explosions in the distance were a frequent sound: “We arrived right at the start of anti-government protests there and lived in an apartment about half a mile from the center of the protests,” David said.

Due to the increasing violent protest, David traveled with the younger three children, whose adoptions had already been cleared, back home to Montgomery, Ala., while Lisa, an emergency medicine physician, stayed behind an additional three weeks to finalize Nastia’s adoption that was held up by paperwork problems and a judge’s illness.

For David, the passion for photojournalism came late in his collegiate career while at Southern Miss – during his senior year as a criminal justice major to be exact: “…I had a lot of catching up to do in journalism classes. Most of my classes were under Ed Wheeler, a former professor. He was tough but gave me a lot of encouragement. He has become a lifelong friend and mentor and even was a groomsman at my wedding.

I hear his voice in my head a lot when I’m shooting, and he’s pretty mean if I don’t do my best.”

Now, much of David’s work is focused on creating and documenting the memories of his children: “It’s very important to me that I capture as many moments as I can now to begin a photographic biography of their lives. Most people have hundreds and hundreds of photos of themselves or their family as they were growing up showing all their special moments. Our kids have none.”

The couple experienced frustration, corruption and false judgment throughout the adoption process. The paperwork alone took a period of about three months to complete, while the review process took another two months. After traveling to Ukraine during the holiday season, the Bundy’s found a lack of zeal by social workers to keep standard office hours or complete work in a timely manner, while others expected monetary gifts and other incentives to process the adoptions. Throughout this time, officials jealous of the children’s adoption by an American couple told fantastic stories about what would happen to them when they came home to the United States, including slavery, sex trafficking and worse: “Corruption is a problem that Ukraine must overcome. We were just at their mercy. It took three months in Ukraine for us to get the processes done and get home. For me, it really illustrated the battle of good hearts against evil hearts,” David shared.

When asked how the Bundy family is adapting to life at home, David confides that every day is a new adventure: “I have a new respect for stay-at-home parents with children. It is just non-stop action from the morning to midnight.”

While the Bundy family no longer faces political unrest, adapting to a new way of life does come with unique challenges, including adjusting to American cuisine: “American food is generally strange to them,” David shared. “Like all kids, they love sweets and candy, but finding good food they will all eat is tough. Usually, I have to prepare a few different choices and do more of a buffet-type thing. Gradually, they are beginning to like more things.”

As for his approach to parenthood, David offers some sound advice to all parents: “Love your kids no matter what they say or do. Correct them, but always tell them you love them. Work really hard not to let them make you mad. Bad behavior is a sign of something else that is deeper.

Also, you will not be perfect as a parent. You will make the wrong decision sometimes.

You will be tired, and it’s okay to do something for yourself.

Lastly, when there is an argument, always be the first to apologize because you are the bigger person.”

And for those considering Nastia teaches Max adopting, David’s advice is how to ride a bike. a testimony to his and Lisa’s dedication to their children: “From the moment you decide to adopt them, think of them as your children. When you commit to start the process, finish it at all costs and as quickly as you can. Do what you would for them if they already were your children.”

The Bundy family love story continues as the family adapts to life at home, with David taking up the study of martial arts in his not-so-spare time under the tutelage of a secondgeneration student of Bruce Lee: “I practice, read, watch Bruce Lee movies, study my teacher’s training videos, and I use it as an example of how my children should study about things they truly love. Knowledge is incredible. The kids like to watch me practice, too.”

or 40 years, The Children’s Center for Communication and Development, a clinical division in the Department of Speech and Hearing Sciences at The University of Southern Mississippi, has provided direct early intervention services for our state’s infants, toddlers and preschoolers with communication and developmental disabilities. In 1973, faculty members Bob Thomas and Mary T. Schaub responded to parent pleas for speech-language therapy services for their preschool-aged children. Envisioning the potential of a clinical program to provide direct services and unique training opportunities for its University students, the department established a model of excellence in both.

Throughout her 32 years of clinical practice and leadership, Margaret Buttross Brinegar fostered the Center’s demand for the highest clinical standards and for the most gifted clinical staff. Unprecedented state and private funding was generated to support the growth and mission of this exemplary program. Upon Ms. Brinegar’s retirement in 2011, the Center’s special educator of 30 years, Cindy Bivins, became interim director, continuing to build upon the Center’s vision for highest standards.

In 2013, a satellite program of The Children’s Center’s Early Oral Intervention Program was established at The University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Park campus in Long Beach. This program serves children in Mississippi’s southernmost counties.

The Children’s Center, now located on both campuses of The University of Southern Mississippi, has the capacity to annually serve over 100 children with disabilities, ages birth through five, and their families; train as many as 150 university and college students; and train several hundred professionals. Thousands of children and families have benefited directly and indirectly from the experience and expertise of the Center’s highly qualified transdisciplinary staff of On May 16, a total of 27 children comprised the 2014 graduating class at The Children’s Center.

Summertime isn’t the only thing going on in South Mississippi these days. The 39th consecutive season of Southern Arena Theatre at The University of Southern Mississippi is underway, and we’re saving a seat for you. This year, the wonderfully talented summer theatre company will present Taking Steps by Alan Ayckbourn and One Man, Two Guvnors by Richard Bean, adapted from Carlo Goldoni’s masterpiece Servant of Two Masters.

Southern Arena Theatre, or SAT, as it is known in the bustling halls of the Theatre and Dance Building at Southern Miss, began in the summer of 1977. The very first performances included A Streetcar Named Desire, The Hound of the Baskervilles and Uncle Vanya. Back then, the summer performances were held in the old Hartfield Theatre building, which was torn down in 1998.

“Today, SAT is staged in the Theatre and Dance Building on Southern Miss’ Hattiesburg campus,” said Dr. John Warrick, chair of the Theatre department.

Warrick says the move was an improvement logistically, allowing for greater efficiency in technical operation and implicit variety for the season. Though SAT is performed in the same venues as the regular semesters, the goals of the productions are very different.

“During the fall and spring terms, the focus of faculty is on the actual training of theatre students. We have a dual

commitment; we are committed to our audiences, but we are also committed to making sure our actors, particularly, get a range of periods and styles,” said Warrick.

The summer theatre is purely dedicated to entertaining the greater Hattiesburg area and the Southern Mississippi region by featuring shows that appeal to everyone.

SAT has been a highlight of the theatre calendar, which features a single dance company performing two productions in rotation. Not only does SAT exist to entertain the greater Hattiesburg community, but it also brings the community into the university and elevates the excellent arts profile for which Southern Miss is known.

Certainly no stranger to SAT, Professor Lou Rackoff was a producer for eight SAT seasons and directed four productions, including last year’s The 39 Steps. This year he is director of Taking Steps by Alan Ayckbourn.

Alan Ayckbourn’s Taking Steps was described by The Times newspaper as “an absolute delight” and a “mini masterpiece of farce” upon its revival in 2010. Everything at the Pines mansion is falling apart, and three incompetent characters endeavor to sort their lives over the course of a single evening. The distinguishment is based upon being excellent in academics, finances, organization, campus standing, recruitment, membership education, community service and philanthropy.

Since Zeta Chi’s founding in 1986, the chapter has been ranked top 10 for a total of nine times, and top 20 for a total of 23 times. Supporting the International Fraternity’s effort, Southern Miss Delts raised more than $1,700 for the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation and volunteered in partnership with the Southern Miss Association of Office Professionals (AOP) in raising more than $1,800 for the 20th Annual Mega-Garage Sale. For the past 25 years, the undergraduate chapter has been responsible for raising more than $400,000 in the fight against the disease.

Sigma Phi Epsilon Honored with Volunteer Award Recently, 25 members of the Mississippi Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon traveled to Atlanta to attend the annual Carlson Leadership Academy (CLA) sponsored by the organization’s national fraternity. CLA is a two-day conference that consists of a variety of involved workshops and presentations from distinguished alumni.

During the previous year’s concluding ceremony, Mississippi Gamma received three awards: two for academic excellence and one for their member development program. This year, the organization received the Volunteer Excellence award, designated for excellence in volunteer recruitment and volunteer performance over the past year, including the recruitment of new volunteers, the retention of existing volunteers, and the establishment of a new alumni and volunteer committee to help guide and assist the chapter on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

On May 1, 2014, Southern Miss Director of Athletics Bill McGillis announced the hiring of Doc Sadler as the 20th head CLASScoach NOTES men’s basketball in school history.

Sadler’s résumé reads like a “who’s who” of college basketball, as he has coached in the Big 12, Big 10, PAC 12 and Conference USA, while working under some of the greatest basketball minds SNAPSHOTS in the game, including Bill Frieder, Billy Gillispie, Eddie Sutton, Bill Self and Fred Hoiberg. Doc Sadler is known nationally for his recruiting prowess and his development of talent as AUTHORS evidencedALUMNI by 19 current or former NBA players that have been tutored by him. A hallmark of a Sadler-coached team is their aggressive hard-nosed defensive style of play.

“He is universally respected by his peers and regarded as one of the great coaching minds and recruiters in the country.

Coach Doc Sadler came to Southern Miss from Iowa State, where as an assistant coach, he helped guide the Cyclones to one of their best seasons ever last year with a 28-8 record, an appearance in the Sweet 16, a Big 12 Conference Tournament Title and a #3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

“My family and I are very excited to be joining the Southern Miss family. I look forward to being a part of the unbelievable tradition of the Golden Eagle basketball program and building on the great foundation already in place,” said Sadler.

As a head coach, Sadler is no stranger to success as he has guided his teams to nine postseason appearances. Sadler’s impressive coaching career spans over 30 years, including head coaching stops at three schools (Arkansas-Fort Smith [JC], UTEP and Nebraska), compiling a 269-146 overall mark.

Sadler is also very familiar with Conference USA as he spent two years as the head coach at UTEP, where his teams produced an outstanding record of 48 wins to only 18 losses.

In his first year in El Paso, his team won 27 games and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, the 27 wins ranked as the ninth-best win total ever by a first-year head coach in NCAA history. His 2005-06 team went on to win 21 games and advanced to the NIT. Sadler spent six years as the head coach at the University of Nebraska, guiding them to three postseason appearances. His 2008 team won 20 games, becoming the first team to win 20 games in a season in almost a decade at NU. During his tenure, his teams defeated eight nationally ranked teams.

Sadler received his first head coaching job at Arkansas-Fort Smith (1999-2003). He led the former junior college power to

three postseason appearances while posting a 120-39 mark.

Sadler has been part of nine Division I basketball staffs, including Arkansas (1982-85), Lamar (1985-86), Houston (1986), Chicago State (1987-88), Texas Tech (1991-94), Arizona State (1994-97), UTEP (2003-04), Kansas (2012) and Iowa State (2012-14) A native of Greenwood, Ark., Sadler is a 1982 graduate of Arkansas, working four years as a student manager for the Razorbacks under Coach Eddie Sutton. He received his master’s degree in education from Northeastern State in 1991. Sadler and his wife, Tonya, have two sons, Landon and Matthew.

Baseball Enjoys 13th Consecutive Winning Season The Golden Eagles collected their most league victories since 2005.

The Southern Miss baseball team may have come up a little short of its ultimate goal—reaching the NCAA postseason again—but the CLASS NOTES achievements of this 2014 squad were certainly outstanding.

The Golden Eagles, who finished 35-25 overall and 19-11 in Conference USA, which was good for third place, collected their most league victories since 2005, winningSNAPSHOTS eight of 10 league series throughout the season. Southern Miss finished in the top three in the league standings in each of the last five seasons.

The program won 30 or more games for the 13th consecutive season AUTHORS and finished above the .500 mark for ALUMNI the 28th time in the last 29 years.

Southern Miss was a game away from reaching the C-USA Baseball Championship title game for the second-straight year (and the fourth time in the last sixALUMNI seasons). ALMANAC After starting the year at 6-9, the squad went 29-16 (.644) over almost the last two and a half months of the season. The team defeated Ole Miss and Alabama each twice and went 5-6 against the Southeastern Conference during the campaign.

The Golden Eagles also lost consecutive games just twice since early March, winning 14 of 19 games at one point.

The Golden Eagles return a solid nucleus in 2015, and the future looks bright for this program. They signed 11 players for next season as they vie to get back to the NCAA postseason.

Men’s Tennis Enjoys Success for First-Year Coach Engineer After a successful year both on and off the court, Zubin Engineer, head coach of Southern Miss’ men’s tennis program, is excited about the direction the program is headed.

Engineer has more than 20 years of coaching experience at the collegiate, Davis Cup, Federation Cup, national and international levels under his belt, which has given him valuable experience prior to becoming the head coach at Southern Miss.

Originally coming from an international background, which is weighted more toward individuality, Engineer particularly enjoys the team aspect of collegiate tennis.

While success on the court is certainly important to Engineer, he is equally proud of his players’ focus in the classroom. Engineer’s team finished this past year with the highest GPA among all men’s sports.

That success off the court has directly fit into the model Engineer has installed in the Southern Miss tennis program.

The team’s success is led by a unique group of international and American players. This past year’s roster included players from Ecuador, Taiwan, England, India, Russia, Portugal and Mississippi.

With the success of such a unique culmination of players from around the world, Engineer looks forward to utilizing his international assets even more in the coming years to continue expanding the culture of the men’s tennis program.

Women’s Tennis Continues Improvement Under Coach Modise After a difficult 0-24 season during the 2013 spring campaign, Southern Miss’ women’s tennis head coach Dominic Modise has begun righting the ship.

“I think we’re growing, and I think we’ve done a great job this year as a team,” said Modise. “We went from a losing season to challenging teams that are nationally ranked and finishing in the top half of the conference. I think we’re making some strides to be better and better.”

Transforming the women’s tennis program is an exciting experience for Modise and has led to some stellar play from four freshmen that earned all-conference honors this past season. The freshman group included Carolin Drescher, who received second team honors, Mahitha Dadireddy, Lisa Noderer and Alex Kitchen, who earned third team all-conference accolades.

With primarily freshmen on Southern Miss’ women’s tennis roster, the future looks bright for the Golden Eagles. Modise has high hopes for his team in the near future.

The University of Southern Mississippi softball team isn’t walking to Oklahoma City, but after a 2014 season like the Golden Eagles had, the team is SNAPSHOTS definitely taking steps in that direction.

Grouped with a team whose average age was roughly 19 years ALUMNI AUTHORSold, Southern Miss finished the season with 22 wins - the most wins since 2010 - and ALUMNI ALMANAC10 Conference-USA wins - the most since 2009. Eighteen of the 22 players on Southern Miss’ roster were underclassmen.

Golden Eagles had just two juniors and two seniors.

The team played a daunting schedule against some of the top competition in the country. After a rugged nonconference schedule, the team notched the most Conference-USA victories in the last five years. Southern Miss opened up the ConferenceUSA season with back-to-back series wins for the first time since 2006.

Throughout the season, the team accomplished several milestones offensively.

Despite the youth of the team, the offense improved its overall batting average 38 points, finishing the year with a team average of .251, up from .213 a year ago. The Golden Eagles tallied 81 extra base hits, including 55 doubles, 10 triples and 16 home runs, an increase from the previous season.

The road to the Women’s College World Series is long and has many pitfalls along the way. Over the last season, Southern Miss traveled 16,430 total miles - 6,700 by plane; 9,730 by bus - but, more important than the miles, Southern Miss took important steps toward reaching Oklahoma City.

PERRY W. MARTIN SR. ’69 was inducted ALUMNI ALMANAC into the Southern Miss ROTC Hall of Fame in 2011. He served seven years in the U.S. Army and a tour of duty in Vietnam with the 101st Airborne. Martin resigned as a captain and became a special agent in the FBI in 1976 to later retire in 1998. He also became deputy director of the Alabama Emergency Management Agency, retired in 2011; and is currently the director of security for Brookwood Medical Center in Homewood, Ala. Perry resides with his wife in Pelham, Ala. JOHN LAZENBY ’69, a realtor with Colony Realty Group Inc., was elected to serve as vice chairman of budget and finance for the more than 9,000-member Orlando Regional Realtor Association.

DR. RANDALL J. WEBB ’71, president of Northwestern State University of Louisiana, will be retiring from this role after serving since 1996. He will become the University’s longest-serving president.

LARRY HARRISON JR. ‘72 was among 15 individuals from throughout the state of Texas who was named an honoree for Best Landman at the 2013 Texas Top Producers awards banquet hosted by the Texas Independent Producers and Royalt Owners Association (TIPRO).

CAROL ANN CRAPPS DRANE ’74, special populations teacher at the Simpson County Technical Center, was selected as the Third Congressional District finalist for the 2014 Mississippi Teacher of the Year.

JOHN E. FORDE ’84, currently the head of Mississippi State University’s Communication department, now serves on two national boards dealing with public relations education. John has been appointed to the Universal Accreditation Board of the Public Relations Society of America and the UAB’s Commission on Public Relations Education.

MARK PROULX ‘85 won first place at the 1979 Mississippi Junior College Press Association for Best News Story. He accepted a national award from the Online News Association in Washington, D.C., in 2006 for Mississippi Gulf Coast coverage after Hurricane Katrina. Proulx was a member of The Student Printz from while at Southern Miss and a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity.

RICHARD AUCOIN ’86 has been honored for his dedication to New York City’s juvenile justice system by the international company Multisystemic Therapy Services, with a Whatever It Takes Award.

For Melanie Keene Hall, MD, SNAPSHOTS choosing to practice medicine in Hattiesburg, was a natural decision.

Growing up in the Hattiesburg area, Hall, ALUMNI AUTHORS a 2005 graduate of Southern Miss, knew her career in health care would lead her back to her hometown.

ALUMNI ALMANAC As a family medicine provider at Hattiesburg Clinic’s Oak Grove Family Clinic, Hall is a small-town girl with big dreams. After earning a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Southern Mississippi, Hall went on to complete her medical degree at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson.

Upon completing medical school, she felt a calling to come back to her hometown and treat the people who knew her best. Hall says, “Although I was an Ole Miss Rebel for those four years, I bleed black and gold! I am a Southern Miss fan through and through.” She adds that one of her favorite pastimes is attending any Southern Miss sporting event.

As a Hattiesburg Clinic physician, Hall says she enjoys being affiliated with a facility that holds a strong presence in the community. “Hattiesburg Clinic has a reputation for providing South Mississippi with health care tailored to an individual’s needs,” says Hall. “We have great physicians who provide great care to each patient. It is a wonderful feeling to be a part of something with such history. I’m proud to serve Hattiesburg, the city that I love.”

At Oak Grove Family Clinic, Hall offers comprehensive medical services to patients of all ages. As a hometown provider, she enjoys getting to know each patient on a personal level. By building relationships with her patients, Hall can help to ensure that individual needs are met.

M. KATHERINE HOLLOWAY ‘79, PH.D. works for Merck Research Labs and is credited with developing protease inhibitors to inactivate HIV. Taken with other HIV drugs, the death rate from AIDS in the United States has dropped by 70% as a result of Dr. Holloway’s research. In 2013 she was named to the 2013 class of ACS Fellows.

LESLIE BOUNDS ‘91, an attorney in the firm’s Ridgeland office, has been named a new shareholder for Copeland, Cook, Taylor and Bush.

Myers is the recipient of the John and Gwen Deakle ’75 Scholarship, presented to a student who has demonstrated initiative, exhibited a concern for the less fortunate, showed an understanding of justice, and who possesses a strong work ethic; and the Sue Riggan Millette Scholarship, presented in memory of graduate Sam Millette’s mother.

Pearl River Resort Names New Director

Dr. Gillentine Promoted to Associate Dean

Erica Clemons Moore ‘08 has been promoted to director of public relations, internal communications and special projects for Pearl River Resort in the Southern United States’ first comprehensive luxury gaming resort. Moore has over nine years of progressive experience in marketing, public relations and event budgeting and planning. Before her promotion, she most recently served as public relations manager at Pearl River Resort. In her new role, she will be responsible for managing all media relations initiatives for the resort properties, which consist of three casinos, three hotels, a water park and two top-ranked golf courses. She will also oversee a team of writers, media specialists, event planners, the resort’s employee communication efforts, and special projects including community service, fundraisers, sponsorships and media events.

Moore has been manager of the department since August 2008, leading the public relations team in creating a strategic and integrated communications program for not only the public, but for the resort’s nearly 3,000 employees. While she was over the public relations team, the resort gained national media attention from more than 80 national media outlets, including NBC’s The Biggest Loser and ABC’s Good Morning America, in the past year alone.

Andy Gillentine, Ph.D. ’95 has been appointed as professor and chair of the Sport and Entertainment program at the University of South Carolina, the largest undergraduate program of its kind. Before this role, Gillentine held positions as the associate dean of academic programs for the College of Hospitality, Retail and Sport Management, associate professor and director of the Sport Administration programs at the University of Miami, and graduate program director at Mississippi State University.

Dr. Gillentine received the Sport Management Outstanding Achievement Award from the National Association of Sport and Physical Education in April of 2009. He has also served as athletics director and coach for more than 15 years and is nationally recognized for his expertise in sport management curriculum and program development. Additionally, he has been appointed as one of the founding commissioners of the Council of Sport Management Accreditation.

Previously he served on the Sport Management Program Review Council Executive Board and as chair of the National Sport Management Council.

CRAIG KING, M.ED. ’95, PH.D. ’98 has recently been appointed superintendent of schools for the Western Maine Foothills School Unit, which serves 10 communities and 2,800 students. King has previously served as a teacher at Jim Hill High School in Jackson and as an assistant principal at Prentiss Jr./Sr. High School.

Hattiesburg American’s New Digital Reporter Eric Shelton ’09 is the new digital reporter for the Hattiesburg American. As a digital reporter, Shelton will provide news coverage through writing, photography, video and social media. Before accepting this position in Hattiesburg, he served the professional photojournalist community for five years.

After his graduation from Southern Miss, Shelton interned with the Associated Press in Boston. Once his internship ended, he moved on to Texarkana, Texas, to work for a daily newspaper and later in Natchez. His next job was in Abilene, Texas, in 2012 as a multimedia journalist.

Shelton grew up in the Magnolia State, residing in Columbia, where most of his childhood was occupied with art, music and history. His interest in photojournalism began with his discovery of the legendary Gordon Parks and his 1956 photograph “Alabama,” and the album art for musician Common’s studio album, “Like Water For Chocolate.” This image showed the juxtaposition of humanity and uncivil cruelty with subtly, which triggered Shelton’s desire to be an instrument for change and be able to tell other people’s stories and fight for the voiceless.

Dr. Phillips Wins Society of Toxicology Translational Impact Award Timothy D. Phillips, Ph.D ‘73, ATS, has won the 2014 Society of Toxicology (SOT) Translational Impact Award. The Transitional Impact Award was developed in 2009 by the SOT, a professional association of more than 7,700 toxicologists, to distinguish scientists whose research is improving human health in areas of toxicological concern.

SOT is committed to creating a safer and healthier world by advancing the science of toxicology.

Phillips is being recognized for his pioneering research with dioctachedral smectite clays in the United States and Africa. Phillips has been named a distinguished professor and holds the Reed Endowed Chair in Toxicology at Texas A&M University. Since joining the faculty at Texas A&M University, he has published more than 185 papers.

TIA CARDWELL ‘03 of Laurel, former partner of Cardwell and Cardwell PLLC in Heidelberg, has joined Sanderson Farms’ Organization Development Department to manage the company’s corporate retention program.

of her work-a-holic father. When one of her fellow classmates and star of the basketball team suddenly turns ill due to the use of illegal performance enhancers, Lindsay finds herself caught up in a scandal that plagues the school’s Athletics department.

Things turn from bad to worse when the school’s beloved coach is found dead, and Lindsay finds herself on the run from the law with the school’s “bad boy.” While forced into becoming fugitives together, Lindsay and this “bad boy” discover much about themselves and each other along their journey— finding unexpected love along the way.

Tony Yarber ’00

Tony Yarber ’00 has been sworn in as SNAPSHOTS the mayor of Jackson. The new mayor brings a presence of strong leadership experience from his education and faith-based arenas.

ALUMNI AUTHORS Yarber shares a great passion for the youth and the community he serves.

Before taking this role, Yarber served on ALUMNI ALMANAC the Jackson City Council as the councilman for Ward 6 since 2009, City Council vice president in 2011, City Council president in 2012, Budget Committee chairman since 2013, as well as Education/Youth Ad Hoc Committee chairman.

Along with his other accomplishments, Yarber has been a committee member for Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and Board of Directors for Relevant Ministries Inc. Yarber credits his achievements and goals to a host of individuals, circumstances and professional growth opportunities. “But most of all, God gets the glory, and it is a humbling experience to be in a position to serve,” Yarber said.

When asked how his University of Southern Mississippi education helped him prepare for where he is now, Yarber replied, “The most profound thing I heard when I made it to Southern Miss came in the form of a challenge by Dr. Joe Paul. He challenged the 1996 freshman class to leave the University better than we found it. I have since lived under that challenge in every arena that I have ever entered. I simply want to matter.”

Mayor Yarber does have some advice for the young people who have hopes of serving in public office. Yarber has three simple suggestions: seek to be a servant of all, become a walking human resource agency, and determine early that doing what is right is more important than being right.

As mayor, Yarber has a three-point plan to unify Jackson and make the Capital City the best place for work, rest, recreation and raising children. Yarber wants the citizens of Jackson to be proud of where they are from.

Hall of Fame Member and Alumni Award Recipient Passes Away at 84 Bobby Chain, a former mayor of the city of Hattiesburg and a graduate of The University of Southern Mississippi, died May 31. He was 84.

Chain was chairman and CEO of Chain Electric Company in Hattiesburg. He served as Hattiesburg’s mayor from 1980-85 and was a member of the Board of Trustees of the State Institutions of Higher Learning from 1972-84, serving as its president in 1978.

He was a member of the Southern Miss Alumni Hall of Fame, a recipient of the Southern Miss Department of Athletics Distinguished Service Award and the Alumni Association’s Continuous Service Award. He also served on the University’s College of Business Advisory Council from 1988-2003 and as chairman of the University’s 75th anniversary campaign, and was national coordinator for the establishment of the University’s Trent Lott Center for Excellence in Economic Development and Entrepreneurship.

Chain has also served on numerous boards at the local, state and national levels. He was a member of the board of directors for the Mississippi Economic Council from 1982-83 and 1992-93. He was appointed by President Lyndon Johnson to serve on the National Advisory Council for the Small Business Administration 1964-68 and by President Reagan to serve on the National Advisory Council on Adult Education from 198488, the latter for which he served as chairman from 1986-87.

Chain was the recipient of the first Hub Award, given to an individual who has made significant contributions to advance the quality of life in the Hattiesburg area. The Pine Burr Area Council and the Boy Scouts of America presented Chain with its 2008 Lifetime of Achievement Award, and he received the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s 2009 Hope Award.

Chain served as chairman of the Alumni Planning and Steering Committee for the former Demonstration School, located on the University’s Hattiesburg campus, where he earned his high school diploma. Located in the University’s George Hurst Building, the school served as a laboratory for student teachers and as a K-12 school up until the early 1960s.

In 2010 during the University’s centennial anniversary, Chain and fellow alumni helped secure a marker for the building and school from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History, along with ones honoring students and teachers who died in military service and an information kiosk.

1. Forrest County Hall and Hattiesburg Hall were both built as part of the original campus in 1912. Forrest County Hall was a men’s and married couple’s dorm, and Hattiesburg Hall was a women’s dormitory.

2. Dr. Jennings Burton George was the first president to hold a doctorate. He was the third president with his term beginning on July 1, 1933. He helped the school get out of debt after the Depression, and helped change the name of the school from Mississippi Normal College to Mississippi Southern College.

Southern S C E N E S L AKE BYRON

When major upgrades are completed on The University of Southern Mississippi’s popular landmark this summer, Lake Byron will be more accessible, more attractive and more appealing than at any time during its 80-year history.

The University’s Physical Plant worked with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to design a new bridge that would preserve the historic look of the old structure, yet bring it into compliance with current ADA and OSHA standards. On May 7, 2014, the bridge was lowered into place and installed.

Among many other upgrades to the area, an honor wall is also being built along the lake as part of the University’s way of saying thank you to the community and the donors for the campus restoration project.

A formal dedication of the newly renovated Lake Byron will take place Sept. 5.
