welcome Hello everyone! Welcome to the 2015 summer edition of ‘The National’ – JCI UK’s bi-annual printed magazine. I can’t quite believe we’re already at the end of July and therefore fast approaching the next Bank Holiday. Let’s be honest, the last one seems an age away already! 2015, our year in which to Feel Proud, is flying and so much has already happened with lots more to come through the course of the year. In this edition we’ll catch up on the JCI UK national events held so far during 2015, plus look ahead to National Convention - THE flagship event of the JCI UK calendar. Tickets for this great event are selling fast so if you haven’t booked yet, what are you waiting for? You’ll also find a profile of JCI UK’s TOYP Honourees nominated by our local chambers, details of the latest opportunity from our Special Relationship with the US Embassy, plus we’ll be spotlighting what some of our amazing chambers have been up to recently. Finally, we couldn’t let this magazine pass by without concentrating on this year’s European Conference. You’ll find a centre-page spread detailing what the JCI UK delegation got up to whilst in Istanbul, a celebration of our amazing success at the European Awards ceremony, and details of other international events you might like to attend this year. I mentioned at the beginning of this year that I was in no doubt that 2015 would be a truly memorable year for the JCI organisation. This has certainly proven to be the case in JCI UK and we’ve still so much to look forward to. Let’s keep having fun, keep building our organisation’s momentum, keep challenging ourselves, and keep achieving the goals we set ourselves, but most importantly let’s all Feel Proud in everything that we do! With Warmest Regards,

Drew

Now in its 5th year, Marketing Academy was the first of JCI UK’s Academy Suite to take place this year. Members from Barnsley to Southampton and from Birmingham to London took the opportunity to brush up their marketing skills and learn how to use the JCI UK marketing tools to position their Chambers effectively in the public arena.

On 9th & 10th May, twelve intrepid JCI UK members took part in the JCI UK’s Public Speaking Academy. The Academy, now in its 2nd year, sold-out early so much was the demand for places. We were lucky to once again have external trainer Cathleen McCarron, a professional voice coach who has worked with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Cathleen taught the delegates about the physicality of using their voice and how to make an impact through storytelling. JCI UK Past National President (2012) and “charisma coach” Solveig Malvik made the trip over from Denmark to impart her knowledge on owning the stage and personal presence, as well as giving great advice on “finding your voice” speaking on things that matter and can influence others. Deputy National President Sarah Beckwith talked about her journey as someone who was terrified of public speaking to being able to train others in it, with tips on getting comfortable, dealing with the unexpected and how to win a JCI speaking competition.

After weeks of build-up via an Academy Facebook Group, the time finally arrived for the delegates to deliver preprepared speeches, which everyone did amazingly. We can’t wait to see who enters this year’s JCI UK Public Speaking competition at National Convention in Barnsley in November. Some of the feedback from the participants included: “JCI PSA 2015 has been epic. The trainers were great and I have left feeling much more confident in my own skills when giving a speech. My ‘improv’ has improved and I now feel more comfortable on the spot”. Georgina Freeman, JCI Leeds

Modules about how to build and use strategic partnerships, how to increase visibility of JCI in the competitive environment and use digital media effectively were run with solutions being offered to the JCI members in attendance. The delegates wrote their own marketing plans and even produced their own video clips – the first for many of them! In good old JCI style, we spent two days packed with loads of practical tasks, opportunities to network and, of course, have fun. New connections between chambers and members were made helping to build collaborative working relationships that will no doubt come in use going forward.

11 delegates graduated from this year’s JCI UK Marketing Academy. Congratulations to you all – we really look forward to seeing you put into practice everything that you learnt during the weekend. Our thanks go to BPP Birmingham for having been such a good host again this year. We are looking forward to returning for another successful Marketing Academy next year.

Marketing Academy is a must for anyone looking to be involved in a JCI marketing role. Regardless of whether you are a newbie to marketing or already an expert, there’s something for everyone. See you there next year!

“Really good weekend. Even having done public speaking before, there are so many things that will improve my speaking”. Ben Hawley, JCI Barnsley “The format and content of the Academy helped me to prepare my speeches better and built my confidence to deliver them. It felt like a protected space to test and receive constructive relevant feedback”. Célestine Onomo, JCI Southampton.

N A E P O R JCI EU 5 1 0 2 E C N E R E F N CO A delegation of thirty nine intrepid JCI UK members and Senators attended this year’s JCI European Conference held at the beginning of June in the vibrant city of Istanbul in Turkey. With the sun shining the JCI UK delegation touched down and prepared themselves for a very full programme of training opportunities, seminars, workshops, business tours, cultural excursions, sports opportunities, speaking competitions, networking, and, of course, great social events.

The first day started with training sessions offered before the Opening Ceremony in the evening, including an official JCI course run by our own Mark Smith. Members of the JCI UK delegation eased themselves in with the traditional Welcome Drinks Reception organised by the National Board, where members and Senators gathered for drinks in order to get to know each other and be given information about what to expect during the conference and what key events to attend. That evening everyone dressed themselves in their finest Union Jackage for the Opening Ceremony. The theatre was a sea of colours with all Jaycees wearing their respective nation’s colours. The ceremony included welcoming the Chief Delegates from each country on stage, as well as performances of traditional Turkish dance. In a change from the norm, the order of the entrance of Chief Delegates was changed from

4

alphabetical to affiliation date order and therefore National President Drew came out 3rd rather than towards the end, receiving big cheers and lots of flag waving as he revealed a Union Jack waistcoat in a particularly memorable flash on stage. Then, once the Conference was officially open, it was time for the first party! The second day of the Conference commenced with the Morning Show where JCI Barnsley, JCI Bradford and JCI Sheffield were all recognised for completing ‘Project Impact 100’ initiatives which had each impacted over 100 people in their local communities. More details on these projects can be found on the next page.

During the second, third and fourth days the Conference had a full programme of training, keynote speakers, business tours and guided excursions around the historical city of Istanbul, all in addition to the General Assembly where loads of good decisions for JCI Europe were being discussed and taken and, of course, where National President Drew & Deputy National President Sarah unfortunately had to spend most of their time attending! The JCI UK delegation made the most of the many opportunities, throwing themselves into every activity and ensuring they had lots of fun along the way. JCI UK was represented in the Debating Competition by a strong team consisting of Captain Ben Hawley (JCI

Barnsley), 1st Speaker Mark Smith (JCI Sheffield) and 2nd Speaker Charlotte Scothern (JCI Rotherham) who enjoyed their experience debating before succumbing to the somewhat enthusiastic antics of the team from JCI Latvia in the Semi Final. Charlotte also proudly represented JCI UK in the Public Speaking Competition following her win at National Convention in Canary Wharf last year. On Friday night it was the Finlandia party night, hosted by JCI Finland as they will holding next year’s European Conference in Tampere,

Finland. The Finnish members certainly know how to throw a party and a good night was had by all. This was a real chance to get up close and personal with lots of other members in a vibrant little club, with many also taking to the street outside of the venue to enjoy their drinks in the warm air. Come Saturday evening it was time to put on our dinner jackets and cocktail dresses for the European Awards ceremony and Farewell Ball. The UK delegation met for a

Pre-Gala Drinks Reception where the tradition of the fun JCI UK ‘Not-the-Awards’ Ceremony was continued with members being awarded for their antics during the Conference. After that we went to the official Award Ceremony where the JCI UK delegation experienced a simply amazing night. Check out the special article on this! Following the Awards Ceremony was the Farewell Ball where members enjoyed a sumptuous sit-down buffet dinner with plenty of food to choose from and music to dance the night away wbefore heading home and preparing

to return to the UK. Thank you to everyone who came along to this year’s European Conference and made it such a memorable experience. We hope you had a great time and hope to see you at the World Congress in Kanazawa, Japan where a staggering 14,000 members are expected to attend and celebrate in the culmination of the celebrations for the 100th Anniversary of the JCI movement!! Wasim Alfaisal JCI UK International Director

JCI UK Chambers Recognised For Project Impact 100 Initiatives The European Conference commenced post Opening Ceremony the next day with the Morning Show where JCI Barnsley, JCI Bradford and JCI Sheffield were all recognised for completing ‘Project Impact 100’ initiatives which had each impacted over 100 people in their local communities during 2015. But what were their projects? Well, read on to find out! Heavy industry and coal mining has left the countryside of Barnsley in South Yorkshire heavily scarred. Natural England is working hard to restore this thriving community into a paradise for nature through initiatives that encompass the ethos of habitat creation and improvement. The government-led Nature Improvement Area vision is to plant 10 hectares of new broadleaf woodland over 3 years. As part of this vision, the team from JCI Barnsley planted over 500 natively grown British tree saplings in a particularly deprived area of the town which has had a long-standing negative reputation for lots of criminal behaviour. The concept behind the team’s project was to help create an improved natural environment for years to come thus benefiting members of the local community by creating new woodland for wildlife, helping prevent flooding and combatting climate change by neutralising carbon dioxide emissions.

The teams at JCI Bradford and JCI Sheffield both launched two huge Easter Egg appeals in order to collect eggs in order to donate them to local hospitals and charity organisations with the hope the gifts would bring a smile to the faces of the children and young people who were staying in hospital or receiving assistance through the charities. JCI Bradford collected a staggering 2,293 Easter eggs, however, have subsequently received further subsequent donations absolutely smashing their original target of 1,000 eggs. A big shout out goes to Michelle Pemberton, JCI Bradford’s Community Director, for managing the project for the 2nd year and who received a Feel Proud Award from National President Drew for her sterling efforts.

JCI Sheffield who were running this project for the first time collected 711 Easter eggs, again smashing their own target of 400 eggs and were therefore able to donate surplus eggs to Age UK Sheffield’s older people day care centre as well as Jubilee Food Bank, over and above the eggs they donated to Sheffield Children’s Hospital. They also worked with Razzamataz Theatre School (run by one of JCI Sheffield’s members) to put on a special performance for the children in the hospital to cheer them up and to hand over the Easter eggs.

More details about ‘Project Impact 100’ can be found at www.jci.cc/100years/impact100 and don’t forget to get in touch with your local Chamber to find out about the projects they are running and find out how you can help or get involved.

MY JCI experience – A first-timer at JCI European Conference Hey all Jessica Tucknutt, a recent new member to JCI Cambridge and a First Timer at a European Conference was kind enough to give a short account of her experience, which should hopefully show you how much you’d enjoy going to one of these international (or national) conferences. The opportunity to travel and network with people all across the world was one of my main reasons for joining JCI, so I jumped at the chance to attend the JCI European Conference in Istanbul. I had been told to prepare for a lot of fun, new friends and hardly any sleep. This prediction turned out to be quite accurate indeed. The conference itself was four days long, with a programme packed full of official JCI training, professional skills development workshops, sightseeing visits and presentations of JCI projects

carried out all over the world. There was a different party every night, organised by the hosts every evening at venues across Istanbul and debating and public speaking competitions, each warmly supported by the delegations. The JCI UK delegation were also keen to meet up as much as possible, and this was a fantastic opportunity to get to know past and future presidents, senators and other new-comers as well. Istanbul is a fascinating city and it was great to be able to explore with a bunch of

friendly JCI-ers (or ‘Jaycees’). The whole conference had the best atmosphere, like being at a party with a group of people all looking to make new connections and learn new skills from each other. I had a lot of fun, met lots of new people, and overall had

the perfect introduction to JCI, its international structure and its many opportunities for development. Now I just need to start saving for Japan!

JCI UK Scores Massive Awards Haul at European Conference! I had the privilege of leading this year’s delegation of 39 JCI UK members and Senators to the European Conference for 5 days of fun in the sun where many amazing memories were made. I’m sure most of you will have kept up with the corresponding posts on Facebook & Twitter whilst the Conference was being held. Lots of action-packed days and great nights were had with the JCI UK delegation making the most of the many opportunities, throwing themselves into every activity and ensuring they had lots of fun along the way. Topping it all off, the JCI UK delegation experienced an exhilarating final night at the Farewell Ball and Awards Ceremony witnessing our best haul of European awards in a very long time and winning more than any other National Organisation in Europe – a truly sensational achievement! JCI UK won 5 main awards with 4 other entries also being short-listed (making the Top 3 of their respective categories). If that wasn’t enough we also had a win in the First Timers Competition AND were recognised with a Gold Award from the UN Foundation for our Nothing But Nets fundraising!

Established in 2011, ACE (Active Citizen Experience) is the free-choice volunteering programme which recognises the positive contribution that JCI UK members make in their communities through active involvement in a diverse range of activities. The ACE programme was initially created as a lcoal chamber activity for JCI Doncaster, but due to its popularity and success it was quickly established as a programme for the whole of JCI UK. Katie Ogley, former Local President of JCI Doncaster, came up with the original concept believing that, in addition to participating in organised JCI activities,

members should be allowed to choose activities which are special to them and be acknowledged for this. JCI UK couldn't agree more! Volunteering can be a very personal thing and one of Katie's favourite quotes about volunteering is from Margaret Mead who said 'never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has'. We believe that it is these small actions which add up to make big changes - something which JCI is all about. The scheme has 3 standard accreditation levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold. Members are awarded certificates for the number of volunteering

hours (between 10 and 30 hours) that they contribute to community projects. These can include volunteering with a local charity, participating in fundraising activities such as being sponsored to run a marathon, working with Scout or Brownie groups, or just completing simple gestures like supporting an elderly neighbour. Here is why they do it: "The ACE programme is a really great way to log all your volunteering hours, not just what do with JCI but in any setting. It really gets you to think about how you are having an impact on responding to the outcomes of the Millennium Development Goals. I was really shocked with how many hours I logged, often averaging 30-40 hours a month, which is like doing an extra week at work time-wise on a range or projects!"

"The great things about ACE is it takes into account what you do both in and outside of JCI. It was an amazing feeling to have my hard work recognised and I felt honoured to be presented with my award." Jenny Storey (JCI Barnsley) Since there is clearly so much passion for this area, we added an additional level to the awards in 2014! There is now a Platinum award for any members who contribute more than 100 hours of voluntary service in any given year. To log hours all you have to do is complete the sections on the ACE form each time you undertake an activity. Let's get volunteering and make a difference in our communities! Yorkshire Ashes In Yorkshire there is a muchtreasured box of ashes which used to be the Regional Group Chairman’s Chair, and we compete to hold the prestigious honour of holding The Ashes on an annual basis. JCI Barnsley has held the Ashes for a number of years, and our members with a slight competitive streak decided to challenge them. With the help of JCI Sheffield, we made up a team to compete for them over a tournament of pool and darts. It was a fantastic, fun and well attended event with hours of games, food and over 25 members joining in the fun. Gareth Carson from JCI Sheffield and Shane Young from JCI Rotherham made up the winning pair for the pool tournament, but unfortunately

2015 is proving to be a great year for JCI Barnsley and its members who have lots planned to make sure it stays that way for the rest of the year. So far they have volunteered with Voluntary Action Barnsley and planted over 500 trees in Barnsley and thrown blue powder paint at the Barnsley Hospital Charity Rainbow Run. In April seven members and two Senators made the short trip up to Scotland along with the rest of the JCI UK delegation to attend the JCI Scotland National Conference hosted by JCI Barnsley’s twin chamber of JCI Aberdeen. During June JCI Barnsley hosted The Great BIADS Bake Off - this involved baking birthday themed cakes (as BIADS were celebrating their 5th birthday) and selling them at the Sunday market in Barnsley town centre. All proceeds went to BIADS (Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s & Dementia Support) who are JCI Barnsley’s nominated charity for 2015. Members also joined BIADS in

it wasn’t enough to bring round the overall points for the day. Many congratulations to JCI Barnsley who therefore continue to hold the Ashes. Watch this space though as JCI Sheffield have challenged Barnsley at the recent Yorkshire Forum meeting! There could be a new Chamber holding the Ashes soon, but one thing is for certain it will definitely be a well fought match, whatever the competition may be. Charlotte Scothern JCI Rotherham President

their annual walk to celebrate the lives of people who suffer from or have been affected by dementia, as well as walked in the Mayor’s Parade to raise awareness of both BIADS and JCI. Even though they have completed lots of community work this year they have been busy with training opportunities and keeping up the JCI Barnsley reputation of putting on great social events! Training sessions have included time management, optimising social media, neuro-linguistic programming, extempore and an open mic session. Social events have included pub quizzes, watching the Tour de Yorkshire and competing against JCI Rotherham in the annual Ashes Challenge. JCI Barnsley look forward to seeing everyone in November when they host the 2015 JCI UK National Convention during which they will lead the way in celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the JCI Movement!

JCI Rotherham members have been concentrating on public speaking in 2015, running sessions that focus on this core element of JCI training. They recently ran ‘Public Speaking Training -Part 1’ which focussed on body language, gestures, confidence and vocals. The session was very well received becoming one of their most popular training sessions with around 80% of the chamber’s members attending including new members who actively participated. Members from other chambers too were also in attendance.

The session provided top tips and finished by recording members presenting on a topic of their choice so they could watch themselves back with a view to making improvements for next time. The JCI Rotherham team were very pleased to see two members compete in the Regional Extempore competition with both making the final. Charlotte Scothern, JCI Rotherham President, commented that both members did amazingly well for their first time. Congratulations to Shane Young who went on to win!

JCI Sheffield is proud to be hosting their 2015 annual gala dinner at the historic Cutlers Hall on Saturday 2th September 2015. Encompassing a theme of ‘Through The Decades, the Sheffield team will take attendees on a whistle stop tour of historical highlights, re-visiting inspirational leaders, committed Council teams and marvellous members’ stories, from the birth of the Sheffield British Junior Chamber in 1927 right up to the Chamber’s present day as JCI Sheffield.

Members from around the UK and further afield are invited to come along to join in celebrating the year and the 100th Anniversary of the JCI movement as this dinner will be held in the evening following JCI UK’s AGM which will also be held in Sheffield. Tickets are on sale now! More info at http://www. jcisheffield.org.uk/events/201509-12/1960-through-thedecades-2015-annual-dinner/

Canary Wharf’s First New Members Evening by Andy Hessey JCI Canary Wharf Deputy President

A balmy mid-summer’s Saturday evening in June was the perfect opportunity for JCI Canary Wharf to hold their first New Members Evening of the year called “Find Your Passion”. JCI Canary Wharf may have become an award winner at the European Congress in Istanbul, but it doesn’t mean we don’t need to work hard at the events to get new members – even if 110,000 people work on your doorstep every day! It’s always tough when you just have a list of names and no idea what they’re

looking for when they walk into the venue but I was really impressed by the diversity and the enthusiasm. We had around 10 new people and 3 international Past Presidents – not a bad supporting cast! All of the potential new members had clearly read the memo and all came with one thing – passion. Yet this passion was for different things within different people. One guy’s passion was selfimprovement and how he can develop those skills within JCI while another was passionate about running his own

business and wants to learn the critical business skills of finance and marketing. These different individuals took the first step towards furthering themselves along with people who love public speaking and want further challenges, to a potential member looking to become a better networker. Each one of them had a burning desire to succeed and improve – to learn and grow and I am confident that we have some potential Council members who were standing in front of me that evening.

We may be small, but hear us roar!

JCI UK & the US Embassy

Since the 2014 JCI UK National Council members met up with representatives from the US Embassy during the National Convention weekend in Canary Wharf last year, the Special Relationship between JCI UK & the US Embassy has been gaining rapid momentum. From local Chamber visits by the Embassy team to receptions held with Ambassador Matthew Barzun himself, we’re fostering a Strategic Partnership that looks sets to benefit everyone significantly, not least JCI UK members. The latest development in this partnership saw the US Embassy recently contacting JCI UK National President

Drew Charman to let him know they are actively looking for members aged between 18 and 30 to take part in an amazing opportunity and that they immediately thought of JCI UK. Ambassador Barzun is launching a new initiative called Young Leaders UK, searching to connect with Britain’s rising leaders and engage in exciting opportunities such as virtual mentorship sessions with high-level U.S. officials and selected American visitors, discussions with Embassy leaders on current issues and U.S. Embassy events and receptions. The process to apply is simple: Step 1. Write a short text

response (not an essay, something the equivalent of a 140 character tweet) OR create a video response (again, nothing professional - videos filmed on a phone are fine. Nothing lengthy - one to two minutes is great) answering three questions: 1. What word or image illustrates what frustrates, concerns or confuses you about the United States? 2. What word or image illustrates what inspires you, what do you like, or what gives you hope about the United States? 3. What word or image comes to mind to describe the Special Relationship between the U.S.

Step 2. Send the text or video to YoungLeadersUK@gmail. com along with your name and age. Please let them know you heard about the initiative through JCI UK and don’t forget to let National President Drew and Deputy National President Sarah know how you get on.

JCI UK National Convention 2015 set to blow your togas off! Friends, Jaycees, Countrymen lend me your ears, for I want to tell you of JCI UK National Convention 2015. OK, OK, yes it might be a bit melodramatic to be quoting Mark Antony in the introduction of an article about JCI UK’s 2015 National Convention, but as it has the theme ‘Modern Centurions’ and an overall Roman flavour, it seemed a nice way to open. So firstly, why the theme of ‘Modern Centurions’? For those of you that don’t know, a Roman Centurion was a commander of 100 men in the army. As 2015 is the 100th anniversary of the JCI movement on a global level, and, as members of JCI, we are the leaders of tomorrow, the theme seemed to fit very nicely. We’re using this idea of modern leaders throughout the conference, with training sessions and workshops designed to help you develop your skills as a leader whether it be in JCI, business or in life as a whole. The conference runs from Friday 20th until Sunday 22nd November and will be held at Holiday Inn, Barnsley, just 3 minutes off J37 of the M1. The Friday is focused on Business and Career, with a full day covering topics including Company Values, How to Overcome Adversity, and Business Intelligence to name a few. We’re aiming to attract not just JCI members to the Friday, but the wider Barnsley and South Yorkshire

business community. We’ll be running a 20 stand expo, have networking sessions, and panel discussion about issues that organisations face not just in the local region, but across the country as a whole, and how they can be addressed. Friday will also showcase the JCI UK TOYP winners of 2015, with a lunch in their honour and showcasing the amazing work each one does in their own field and the afternoon will be rounded off with the JCI UK Public Speaking Competition. A JCI UK National Convention wouldn’t be a JCI UK National Convention if there wasn’t a great party on the Friday night, and it’s not going to be any different this year! Continuing the Roman flavour, the Friday night will be a Togo Party! You don’t have to come in a toga if you don’t want to, but when all you have to do is wear a sheet, it’s going to be cheap, easy and great fun. Also, for those of you that don’t know how to tie a toga, we’ll be creating a video to show you all in advance, so there’s no excuse there either! As with all JCI UK National Conventions the Friday night will include the Extempore Competition followed by some great entertainment - more on that to follow soon. Saturday will focus on you and developing your skills, as well as National Council and the JCI UK Debating Competition. We’ve tried to put on training sessions that are varied and different and so far have sessions planned around how to tame your chimp (that little voice in your head that puts you off doing things) and in a nod to the origins of JCI, a dancing training session.

Saturday evening will be the JCI UK National Awards and Gala Dinner. This will be held at the main conference hotel so no need to worry about transport as everything will be in one place. Make sure you come along to support your local Chamber in the awards they have entered and cheer them on. The Gala Dinner is always a great night and it will be even more memorable in this special year for JCI. We have also arranged an official JCI Training course to be delivered on the Sunday morning, but which one it is, is up to you - the members. Closer to the time, we’ll be asking all those registered for the weekend to choose which course we run. Don’t worry - we’re not forgetting about the Senators. We’re got a great programme of events planned for all you Senators on the Saturday and a wonderful Senate Breakfast on the Sunday morning. Hopefully after reading all this you’re as excited to come along as we are to host the event! If you already have your place booked, brilliant! If not, you can register now by going

to www.jciuknc2015.co.uk. If you have any questions about the2015 JCI UK National Convention, feel free to email at ipp@jcibarnsley.co.uk or give me a call on +44 7717 682413. Hope to see you here in November! Ben Hawley Director, 2015 JCI UK National Convention
