welcome Dear Members 2014 was quite a year - what was the highlight for you? Personally, and I don’t think I’m alone in this, it was an absolute honour and a pleasure to be part of some of the excellent academies JCI UK ran during the year! It was great to see members from all over the country, coming together and supporting each other as they embarked on a journey. Whether you want to brush up your marketing skills, your confidence in public speaking or you want to take the LEAP and become a better leader, our academies are fast becoming internationally renowned for the high quality of both the trainers and the delegates! I am really proud to be part of an organisation that offers these opportunities to our members. Of course, 2014 was the year where I asked you to push yourself that one step further, try something different and ultimately, to Play Your Part. I am delighted to report that we saw no shortage of people doing exactly that. There were some excellent projects that took place last year and whilst I can’t name them all (that would be like delivering a manuscript akin to the Yellow Pages through your door!), in 2014 our local chambers excelled themselves and showed that it doesn’t matter how big or small your membership is - positive impact happens when positive people come together!! A huge well done to everyone! You came and helped us celebrate all of these achievements and more at the JCI UK National Convention, hosted by JCI Canary Wharf on 14-16 November. The team delivered a phenomenal event with great training opportunities, fabulous keynote speakers and a glittering gala! I want to thank all JCI UK members for playing their part and making my year such a memorable one.

National Awards in London On the weekend of 14th to 16th JCI UK held its Annual National Convention hosted by JCI Canary Wharf, London. The theme for the National Convention represented the story of self-development in the pursuit of achieving greatness. This is a message manifested in the Docklands area that was bombed during the war and has emerged to be one of the major financial capitals of Europe. To rise from challenges into great achievement is a common reality for JCI members especially in the UK. We are dedicated to the JCI spirit working in the community and on our personal growth and this is why we adopted the emblem of the Phoenix!

The National Convention saw guests attend from across the UK and Europe. Delegates arrived from Poland, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, Estonia, Malta and France to name a few! Thanks go to all our speakers and trainers: Pam Warren, Senator Joe Dilger of JD Global Advantage, Catherine Gannon, Kay Atkin, Simon Alexander Ong and Sheun Onemusi and Chris Cohsen who made this event a truly inspiring and not-to-bemissed experience. A National Convention would not be the same without our classic competitions in Public Speaking, Debating and the ever-enjoyable Extempore. Each of them were tightly fought and fantastically high quality.

Located in a Grade One listed building, the Museum of Docklands, all delegates as well as numerous Senators and national and international JCI friends, suited and booted, saw a glamorous Black Tie Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony. The evening was not without event and National President 2014 Kate delivered her farewell speech in the intimate surroundings of a cosy room followed by Lesley Fowler JCI Scotland National President, Derek Reilly JCI Ireland National President and JCI UK’s incoming 2015 National President Drew Charman.

Ben Hawley, President In 2014 members of JCI Barnsley were asked to challenge themselves. This resulted in a real community focus, which saw us supporting a number of charities. We raised over £3,000 for charities including Shelterbox, Barnsley Independent Alzheimer’s and Dementia Support (BIADS), Barnsley Hospital Charity and Safe@LAST. This was done in a variety of ways, including walking the Yorkshire Three Peaks, Collections at events and also taking part in a ballroom dancing competition. Members took part in national projects such as the Pound a Day Challenge where members raised £285, over a quarter of the total amount raised, and the Shade Aid appeal, collecting 49 sunglasses.

It wasn’t all about raising money though, and members also gave up their time to volunteer at local events, such as the Rotary District Disability Games, Barnsley Hospital Charity Rainbow Run and also took part in the Barnsley Hospice’s Neon Night walk. Our training programme saw a variety of topics covered, including ballroom dancing, Barnsley and the Great War, and an open mic night, which saw members take to the floor with their own topic. Barnsley was represented in all regional public speaking contests and the national academies, JCI UK Leadership Excellence in Action (LEAP) and the JCI UK Marketing Academy. Socialising is a big part of what we do in JCI Barnsley and our

events in 2014 saw us playing dodgeball, archery and pub quiz’s just to name a few. The annual train pub-crawl took place in August, with 43 attendees. This event seems to get bigger every year! The triathlon (consisting of crazy golf, laser tag, ten pin bowling) also took place again, this time with teams from JCI Rotherham and JCI Sheffield joining in the fun.

Barnsley was shortlisted as one of the top three chambers in Europe. That says everything anyone needs to know about JCI Barnsley - we might not be the biggest, but we certainly played our part in 2014.

JCI Barnsley had members attend both the European and World Conferences, including a couple of first timers. Also, JCI Barnsley made up one third of the Debating team that represented JCI UK at both events. At the European Conference in Malta, JCI

Gary Rocks, President JCI Belfast started 2014 with aspirations to follow the growing success of the Chamber. Highlights in the year included a cocktail making social at Café Vaudeville, an introduction to cloud computing by new member Richard Whan and an interactive leadership training evening.

A major part of our year was the continuing collaboration with three professional members organisations to organise the Young Leaders Northern Ireland conference in May 2014. Jamie Warnock and Richard O’Neill played key roles in organising the conference of approximately 200 young people. The conference theme was

Diversity in Leadership and the fantastic line-up of speakers included local adventurer Leon McCarron, Simon Weston OBE, Falklands war veteran and Dr Leah Totton, the winner of The Apprentice 2013.

knowledge. Members learnt about JCI branding, social media, JCI websites, marketing mix and the 5 P’s, stakeholder engagement, how to create a digital strategy for their chamber and PR. By close of play on Sunday afternoon the delegates brains were exploding with information and ideas and the “to do” lists for each member were bursting at the seams. Feedback from the delegates

about the weekend and the trainers was overwhelming and proved that yet again JCI UK has empowered members to “Play their Part” in their chambers, communities and their workplaces.

February saw the 4th Marketing Academy held in Birmingham, in the fabulous offices of BPP Professional Education. 18 JCI members from across the UK chambers arrived full of enthusiasm and energy, just what they needed for a full weekend of professional trainers/ marketeers talks and exercises to expand their marketing

European Academy interview with Mark Smith How did you feel about being appointed for one of those scare places for European Academy? Very excited, proud and privileged! What would you say was your biggest learning? I learned a lot about myself and more about my personality style. One of the biggest things for me is that I can switch off if I feel like I›m not being heard or listened to. Wasim Alfaisal, Soraya Bowen, Luke Evans and Mark Smith How many years have you been with JCI? I have been a member for 2.5 years. Which role do you hold in JCI this year? 2014 Deputy President for JCI Sheffield Will you stand for a role in 2015, too? Yes, I will stand for 2015 Local President for JCI Sheffield! That is exciting! How did you come to attend the European Academy?

Previous Deputy Presidents have attended EA for years from JCI Sheffield, so I have heard so much buzz and hype about it and heard from previous members about what a positive impact it had on them. When I decided to stand as Deputy President, it was one of those things I accepted was part of the role, if I was lucky enough to get one of the few places! I had to fill in an application form as there was only 3 places for JCI UK it is a competitive process to get on!

What did you enjoy most? I could say so much here but I think overall it was the chance to meet and work with peers from so many different countries and cultures. How do you think will these learnings help you in JCI? It has helped me to establish a great European network of members who are likely to be in a similar role to me next year. The buzz on the facebook alumni group is fantastic and there are lots of examples and ideas being shared.

How will these learnings help you in your job? It has helped me further understand how different personality styles and types play out and how I can adapt my approach to get the best of out of managing a team. Do you feel what you learnt at the European Academy will help you in your personal life? It helped to grow my confidence and push yourself myself even when I was tired and not in the mood for networking or talking, I just had to get on with it! Which message would you like to convey to your fellow Jaycees? Going to EA was such a unique experience and opportunity. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants to take on a leadership role. Thank you!

Kay Purser, President 2014 has been a great year for strong continuation of the chamber from its re-launch in 2013 and we’ve continued to raise awareness of the chamber through social media, with a 57% increase of Twitter followers and a 50% rise in Facebook likes. We’ve held nine personal development sessions over the year with some fantastic trainers donating their time to us, two new members nights in April and October, and many social events including drinks, curry, and the annual Jaycees vs Senators bowling competition! Unfortunately, despite only 3 points in it, the Jaycees were unsuccessful in beating those mighty Senators! Third time lucky hopefully in 2015!

We also enjoyed a private tour of the Birmingham Library, following from the networking event that took place last year, which really is a fantastic building. A local MEP spoke to us about the opportunities within the European Union, and we held a joint negotiation challenge event with the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS). Once again we’ve stepped out of the localities of Birmingham as Deputy President Luke Evans and I attended the World Congress in Leipzig and even strengthened relationships with our twin chambers of Lyon, Leipzig and Frankfurt over a twinning lunch!

On the community front we have raised £300 for our chosen charity, Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research, by volunteering at supermarket bag packs and a collection at Birmingham New street station during the charity’s ‘Small Change Big Impact’ campaign week. The charity’s Birmingham Bikeathon also took place during that week and we contributed to the event by being there to hand out the medals to the budding cyclists when they crossed the finish line! It was lovely to see the achievement (and relief!) of each cyclist as they completed the course. We also had the privilege of meeting the Lord Mayor of Birmingham at the charity’s annual general meeting to recognise our

volunteering efforts. I am really pleased with our achievements this year and I am looking forward to seeing the chamber continue to grow in 2015 with new President Luke at the forefront. I will be there supporting him every step of the way and as still very much a young evolving chamber I’m excited to see what new opportunities lie ahead. Another great year, thanks Brum!

Philip Cockayne, Deputy President It’s been a stellar year for JCI Bradford. We’ve grown by 250%, increased the number of Community Projects by 200%, had various training sessions covering marketing, public speaking, debating and even neuroscience to name a few. On top of that, JCI Bradford is full of energy and more than ready for seeing the same success in 2015. This year was about building on the foundations laid out in 2013. JCI Bradford had a good list of project and events, but despite high engagement from members, still only had 7 members in total. Despite the low number of members, we had a good list of contacts, some excellent emerging

partnerships and various avenues to explore for growth. In 2014, JCI Bradford focussed on developing relationships with local businesses and organisations in the city and the broader region. JCI Bradford partner with the Bradford (now West and North Yorkshire) Chamber of Commerce in order to help them drive Executive Member level value and engagement and help us gain more members. We’ve also developed great relationships with the Yorkshire Enterprise Network, Telegraph and Argus, Local Leader and recently, the Bradford Young Professionals Network and the Yorkshire Mafia Young Guns.

Around our Community efforts, Michelle Pemberton, JCI Bradford’s Community Director, did a great job in 2014 organising Community projects (notably the Easter Egg Appeal, the Harvest Festival and the 25th anniversary of the Secret Santa Appeal) and along with various other Awareness Campaigns. Michelle was awarded for her efforts and is set to have a great year in 2015. Around leadership, 2014 was also when Philip Cockayne stood as Deputy President. With no formal President, Philip and his tremendous council team were able to drive the chamber forward, putting on frequent events and projects and driving engagement with members. 2015 will be about continuing the hard work which has been delivered throughout 2014 and using the recent membership growth, growing council team and increased local exposure, JCI Bradford will aim to see

similar dizzying heights in 2015. 2015 will see the launch of JCI Bradford’s Leadership Academy – a programme of events which members can sign up for in order to Learn, Grow and Lead. This programme, driven by the Chamber of Commerce will see more members who are better engaged but utilising the platform JCI provides to achieve better success in their businesses, their career and their lives.

Jenny Willet, President The main aim for JCI Cambridge in 2014 was to develop a quality core membership base of engaged JCI Cambridge members. In addition, we wanted to provide a balanced programme of business, training, community and social events to cover the full JCI spectrum, with the additional goal of providing the full trio of public speaking, debating and extempore training by the end of the year. We kicked the year off well with over 25 attendees at our first business event: a joint formal networking evening with Cambridge Alternative Network. Other key business events in 2014 included a talk from Justin Miles, a professional adventurer, on the topic of “Positivity in the Face of Adversity”, DISC training from Caroline Robinson, Director of Sandler Training in Cambridge, and a talk from

6

Ross Mendham, founder of Bare Naked Foods, who starred on BBC’s Dragon’s Den. Our well-balanced training programme included Social Media Training from Cambridge-based company Social Media Frontiers, LinkedIn Training from the lovely Derek Reilly, Public Speaking Training from Jon Torrens, a local Communication Coach and Debating Training with our very own Sarah Beckwith, which resulted in one of our members participating in the final of the JCI UK National Debating Competition. We also ran an informal extempore session at the pub to help complete our trio of public speaking activities. Our community activities were focused on local homelessness charity, Wintercomfort, and

included JCI Cambridge members volunteering at breakfast sessions, as well as the Wookie Woodland Walk, where JCI Cambridge members completed a fundraising walk dressed up as Star Wars characters. On an International level, we had one attendee at European Conference, whilst the remaining four members saved up to attend World Congress in Leipzig! Social Events included a

number of well attended informal networking events and a Comedy Night, and we finished off the year with 15 happy bowlers and lots of strikes at the JCI Cambridge Bowling Extravaganza!

Michela Pascucci, President We established our theme for the year ‘Lead Your Life’ and started working on a strategy to build that theme within the Canary Wharf Chamber. For quarter two, JCI Canary Wharf members worked on a community project called Engage where we worked on a 12 week community project to target young people aged 16-25 living in Tower Hamlets, East London who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). Using the Active Citizenship Framework and the JCI strategy of Impact, the program was designed to train and develop the skills and knowledge to the young people to help them enter to further education, employment, entrepreneurship or training. For quarter two and three we started our personal development program on our theme ‘Lead Your Life’

covering 6 training events.

Local Organisation

By September 2014 we had 19 members registered to our chamber. Our JCI members though new to JCI attended a few national events including JCI UK Inspiration Day and JCI South Summerfest. Our members have also attended JCI UK AGM meetings.

2014 Most Outstanding Social Project

In quarter three, we were awarded the bid to host the 2014 National Convention with JCI London and our members started working on the planning for the convention weekend held 14th-16th November 2014.

2014 Most Outstanding Programme.

We were recognised for all our hard work and achievements, as a brand new chamber we took away 5 national awards at the national convention including the following: 2014 Most Outstanding New

Katie Ogley, Yorkshire Regional Chair After three years of relative inactivity, JCI Doncaster relaunched in 2014. This saw great success and quickly built up momentum and membership growth. After a fantastic re-launch event with over 40 people in attendance, we immediately held a planning meeting. This was important for us to ensure that the new and potential members had the opportunity to shape how the Chamber’s event calendar would look for the rest of the year. Whilst awareness of JCI Doncaster’s re-launch grew, the plan was not to provide a packed calendar of events, which may have resulted in poor attendance, but fewer, quality events. We scheduled a varied programme of business, training and community events, all of which had a fantastic level of engagement and attendance. We were also proud to host a Regional social event to celebrate Yorkshire Day, a Regional event that had previously not been run for a number of years. We did not only host a Regional event, but our members also travelled to other Chambers to attend evens they were hosting.

2014 Best Local Community Empowerment Programme 2014 Canary Wharf Most Outstanding Member (Award Of Merit to Nabiil Imrit)

The overall aim of 2014 was to establish a new chamber with active members and we clearly achieved and exceeded our objectives for 2014. In 2015, we look to build upon the projects we started in 2014 especially the community aspect making them more sustainable, establish new and effective strategic partnerships as well as build awareness or JCI and grow our membership. Bring on 2015!!!

Michael Best, President Towards the end of the year, the hard work and enthusiasm was rewarded, when we were presented with the award for Growth and Development at the JCI Yorkshire Regional Awards. This followed through to us being awarded a certificate of merit for the same category at the JCI UK awards. 2014 was a very exciting year for JCI Doncaster and it has been great to see so many new members, bringing a breath of fresh air and new lease of life to the Chamber.

JCI Harrogate launched in January 2014 and is one of the new additions to the growing network of chambers in Yorkshire, extending JCI’s reach into North Yorkshire. This new chamber runs about one event events in the Harrogate area ever three weeks, and over the course of 2014, members had the chance to take part in Extempore, experience business and personal development sessions on a wide variety of themes - from Body Language to effective PR and marketing for small businesses. It has also started to develop links with local charities and make a difference in the local area

New Members Sarah Birkby Andrew Bray Victoria Chapman Simon Dishman Michael Dutton Stephen Hall Kristopher Kerins Ben Latham Cloe Raan Rachel Whiteley Simon Wright

and It has gained a patron, in the Old Swan Hotel, who kindly support the Chamber with venues to host events. It continues to grow it’s membership, and one of the aims for 2015 is to give members more opportunities to visit other chambers and attend regional and national events. It also aims to develop into a more structured chamber, giving the opportunity for its members to experience leadership roles in marketing, finance, training, business and community.

Alex Byers, President JCI Leeds have had a jam packed programme of events in 2014, with a focus on training sessions we ran a full and varied programme throughout the year including networking training, presentation skills and time management. We have also been active on the social front with regular social outings, including our St Patricks Day social to tie in with our twins JCI Dublin. For our community project this year we were proud to re-start a working relationship with the Lord Mayor of Leeds and were heavily involved in organising The Lord Mayor’s Cycle Ride which raised over £14,000 for the charity, Leeds Offers Fun For The Young (LOFFTY). JCI

Leeds members also engaged with the national community projects, taking on the £1 a Day challenge and Shade Aid appeal. We also took on an extra challenge and, for the second year running, collected bras for Flamingo Foundation. JCI Leeds members were active locally, regionally, nationally and internationally with members attending UK National Convention, Scotland National Convention, European Conference, World Congress and Global Partnership Summit. We celebrated the year and the achievements of our members at a purple themed Annual Dinner, held in November attracted members, past

presidents and senators from across the UK and was a resounding success. We also raised £360 for local breast cancer charity, The Haven. I am incredibly proud of what JCI Leeds and our members have achieved in 2014. It has been so rewarding watching members take on new challenges and develop as people through the opportunities that being a JCI member offers. I am honoured to have been given the opportunity to lead JCI Leeds in 2014 and I can’t wait to see what 2015 will bring.

Training and Community successes in Liverpool These are great times to be part of JCI Liverpool. As a member, we have seen how the chamber is moving forward, which fills us with excitement. Recently, we held our Learning from Experience event, and our Great Ropewalks Litter Pick community project. Organised by Aidan McManus our Business Director, in collaboration with the Institute of Directors (IoD), JCI Liverpool, held an event as part of the successful International

8

Festival of Business (IFB2014). Delivered by some inspirational speakers, this focused on challenges facing businesses and how to overcome them. The speakers all told about their own career challenges encountered, and how these were overcome. The event was well attended and enjoyed by JCI members and invited guests, and was thought provoking, as it provided an insight into the importance of online and offline authenticity for businesses and individuals. Great Ropewalks Litter Pick project was organised by

Peter Schriewersmann, our Community Director, in collaboration with Liverpool City Council and AMEY. On a wet Saturday morning, JCI members teamed up with local residents and councillors, by cleaning the iconic Ropewalk streets and surrounding area of rubbish and litter, making the area look better.

Caroline McCarron President Coming in to 2014 as President after having had such a successful few years with Jen, Emma and Debbie as President was no mean feat but the 2014 JCI Manchester Council were determined to ride high on our success and pull out all the stops. We had a fantastic year with our Business & Training directors having put together a fantastic lineup of breakfast seminars with some of Manchester and the UK’s most prolific business people. We had record turnouts and with over 500 people attending the seminars over the year. Having won a national award in 2013 for the Breakfast seminar series we were fortunate to be awarded highly commended at the JCI European Convention. Having had such success with the Business & Training side of JCI we wanted to ensure that the Charity & Social side was delivering what we had promised to our members and were just as successful as the Business & Training Offering. We set about upping

our Charity game and sitting down and working with our two chosen Manchester based Charities Forever Manchester and Francis House. In our two-year relationship with these charities we raised £9,000 and managed to promote the JCI Manchester Brand to all their ambassadors and supporters. They are two very high profile Charities in Manchester so the alliance was of great benefit to JCI Manchester. We managed to retain our membership numbers and remain the second biggest chamber. Our Socials and Charity events were attended by over 700 people throughout the year. The New Members Evening back in March attracted over 150 people and we were able to showcase to them the benefits of joining our organisation. The year was rounded off by our Annual Manchester Young Talent Awards held at the iconic Midland Hotel in Manchester. We welcomed 300 business

Leader and professionals to join with us in celebrating Manchester’s talent and it helped demonstrate how far the candidates and winners had come with the help of JCI Manchester. This was a fantastic night further bolstered by the fact that that two weeks before JCI Manchester was crowned the best local organisation by JCI UK and the Manchester Young talent Awards awarded the best local growth and Development Programme which we made sure that everyone in attendance knew about! I was also fortunate enough to be highly commended as best Local President, which I was not expecting! All of these things gave us the confidence to bid for a national event - something we had not done in the past five years, as we were not confident enough to do so. We won the bid for Inspiration

Charlie Pearson, President On 17th February 2014 JCI Rotherham re-launched at Rotherham College. It has been a very busy year since then! We had fundraising collections, public speaking champions, training sessions, hosted regional events days out in Rotherham, business tours, plus we travelled the region, country and around the world and much, much more! The success JCI Rotherham had this year just goes to show what can be achieved when a group of like-minded people come together. A year into relaunching a chamber we just couldn’t have asked for more. Three highlights from the chamber during the year were the stamp collection, which raised over 23,000 stamps (around £650) for Radio

Nightingale, Rotherham Day where members visited the town’s attractions and the business tour of Beatson Clarke normally only reserved for VIPs. In 2014 we also took away five Regional awards and four National awards. All the members and supporters of JCI Rotherham have worked so hard and I want to say that I am really thankful and grateful for that. You should be truly proud of yourselves and you definitiely ‘Played Your Part’.

and present their views on the future strategy of JCI UK. The groups used the 5 main elements of the 2014-8 Global Strategic Plan (Impact, Motivate, Invest, Collaborate & Connect) to help produce and align a JCI UK roadmap that will be used to provide direction for local chambers to align their own plans to, as well as help shape the JCI UK Plan of Action for 2015 and beyond. All attendees agreed that it was a very valuable and useful session, with the output providing a clear and current map of the strategic areas that JCI UK will focus on going forwards. The output was shared during the JCI UK AGM in Southampton and is available to all members via their local chamber Council teams or via the Resources section of the JCI UK website.

Sarah Beckwith I took on the role of Personal Development Director this year because I am passionate about training. Becoming a trainer is one of the things I never would have considered I could do when I first joined JCI and therefore one of the achievements of which I am most proud. For me the JCI UK Trainers’ Forum held in Sheffield on Sunday 20 July was simply fantastic – to be surrounded by other members

who are just as passionate about training and their own development as trainers. The room was full of laughter and energy, with brilliant ideas flying around for how JCI UK Trainers can support each other and make training in JCI UK even stronger going forwards. The team are working on some initiatives which we will be launching soon. If you are interested in becoming a trainer in JCI, please get in touch: sarah.beckwith@jciuk.org.uk

Ilona Alcock, President At the start of 2014 we challenged all our members, directors, patrons and supporters to “be better” and promised to offer all the support needed to meet those goals. From day one we were overwhelmed with the response and looking back over the year we could not be more proud! Better Members New and existing members became more involved with the Chamber, taking up our new buddy scheme. We sponsored places for all national and international events to ensure all members could get the most from JCI. Better Businesses Our flagship project with RISE Sheffield (which recruits supports graduate recruitment in SMEs) went from strength to strength, with new members, joint events and even one intern joining us at World Congress! This partnership has helped to raise our profile in the business community leading

to a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister. Alongside this we ran a range of business tours and talks. Better Communities We challenged ourselves to donate £1,007 and 1,007 volunteering hours (Challenge 2014!) to our chosen charity, SAFE@LAST, and absolutely smashed both targets! We also ran our annual Easter Egg appeal for Sheffield Children’s Hospital, collected sunglasses for ShadeAid and assisted with a beach clean up! Better Training Our members told us what they wanted to be better at and we listened! This led to some incredible training sessions including time management, goal setting and leadership. Our members have delivered JCI official courses, trained at LEAP and run local sessions on debating, sales and online marketing. Better Everywhere

In 2014 we attended... all regional events and competitions, Inspiration Day, JCI UK & Ireland AGMs, Marketing Academy, JCI UK, Scotland & Ireland National Conventions, Public Speaking Academy, Presidents & Deputies day, LEAP, twinning weekends, European Convention, European Academy and World Congress. Phew! We certainly made an impression whilst we were out and about – captaining the JCI UK debating team to the European finals, picking up awards and presenting the JCI Ireland President with his senatorship (a real testament to the strength of our twinning relationship with JCI Mayo).

Better Socials Our Network Wednesdays really took off in 2014, reengaging current members and raising our profile in the city. Of course the highlight of our social calendar was our Hollywood themed annual dinner complete with Oscars!

JCI South - Summerfest 2014 On 9th August JCI Southampton welcomed members from the Southern region chambers, plus a good helping of National Board, as they made their way to the South Coast to attend their annual regional Summerfest event. Held each year, the event is designed specifically as a give-back event to thank the Southern region’s members for their continued active membership and contribution, bringing them all together for a fun day full of activities such as team building exercises, leadership training, community events and plenty of other surprises - all wrapped up by a social evening spent over dinner and drinks. The morning started with a warm welcome from RGC South, Jasmine Lambert, and JCI UK National President, Kate Senter, and was followed by team building training facilitated by Sarah Beckwith,

JCI UK Personal Development Director. Who knew what you could achieve with a few straws, some stickybacked tape and a raw egg or two?! Enthused, the group moved onto the next activity - a fantastically insightful tour of the BBC South studios, especially arranged for the event by Deputy National President, Drew Charman. Here the group were expertly guided through the workings of the TV and radio studios by BBC Solent radio presenter and former JCI Southampton member, Neil Sackley. Bone china cups, finger sandwiches and cakes a-plenty ensued as we had a lovely afternoon tea afterwards at the ChariTeas tearooms in The Marlands Centre run by JCI Southampton›s nominated charity for 2014 - USupport. The charity is committed to working with local

organisations to provide as many experiences as possible for disabled, under-privileged or disadvantaged children. The afternoon session finished with a community event held at the YMCA in Southampton. JCI Southampton teamed up with CRUMBS Southampton and Southampton Food Port to enable the Summerfest attendees to deliver a huge amount of much-needed food supplies for the YMCA’s residents - up to 40 homeless young people aged between 16 and 25 years old who are offered affordable rented accommodation and housingrelated support.. CRUMBS (Co-ordinated Re-use Makes Business Sense) is an exciting new project led by Southampton City Council which aims to contribute to Southampton’s low carbon initiatives whilst Southampton FoodPort is a local charity

which aims to help homeless people and to create a better place for their well-being. With a short stop-off at a local bar for some timely predinner drinks, the attendees who stayed for the evening social made their way to Fogo Gaucho - a Brazilian ‘rodizio’ style restaurant - where they delighted in eating as much as they could from the salad bar and the numerous giant skewers of meat brought continuously to the table by the attending waiters.

This simple idea has gathered so much pace over its very short life. JCI members throughout the UK took part in this very engagaing, charitable and awareness driving project once again raising over £1,255 for the charity Save the Children. Members could only live off £7 worth of food and drink over seven days. Not only did it raise money but the publicity brought awareness of the plight that some people have to live off less every day of their lives struggling with extreme poverty. The £1-a-day project runs every January.

Inspiration Day 2014 took place in Barnsley welcoming members from all across the country. The program was truly inspirational with two keynote speeches grasping the attention of the audience. Graham Parker told us his story about a terrible car accident in his early life that should change it forever. After long years of numberous major operartions, Graham turned his life around from being a coal miner to launching his own PR agency and raising mony for charities. His talk certainly motivated everybody to overcome obstacles in life. John Sanderson, a musician and composer who built an internationally successful business providing audio for big names like Sony, Sega and Rockstar Games. He inspired his audience to make best use of their talents and gifts to achieve great success.

EUROPEAN CONFERENCE The European Conference 2014 in Malta was a truly knightly experience! The Conference Organising Committee around Charlotte Gregory had not promised too much: a keynote speech by the prime minister of Malta Joseph Muscat, musical entertainment by Maltese celebrity Ira Losco, excellent trainers, a community project under water, pool parties and an amazing openair award gala! What more to add – oh, maybe that JCI UK was shortlisted eight times and won three European awards! JCI UK won the following awards: Best Local Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme - Costa Academy & Apprenticeship Training Scheme - JCI Southampton Most Outstanding Local President - Michael Steel Most Outstanding Member Mark Smith

Last weekend, as part of the JCI UK AGM, we were excited to gather together all of the donations which our Local Chambers have collected for Shade Aid. Our fantastic members have so far collected a total of 579 pairs of glasses and sunglasses! We know this total is increasing still as a number of chambers are awaiting donations which have been pledged. We had 10 of our Local Chambers from up and down the country make donations. Congratiluations to JCI Rotherham who collected the most pairs in any Local Chamber, with a total of 108 pairs!

It was fantastic to have Katherine Sparkes of Flamingo Creative attend the meeting to collect the glasses. She was able to give us information on how the donations will be beneficial to Shade Aid and Vision Aid Overseas. Not only did she give us an update on this, she also gave us an update on how the bras we collected last year have been to put to good use. It's great to have such a great relationship with the charities we support and be able to get ongoing feedback. Thank you to all of the members who donated to and promoted the appeal.

Mark Smith, Deputy President of JCI Sheffield explained ”Winning the most outstanding member in the UK was a total honour only to be topped by winning this award at European level! I was totally shocked and my legs went to jelly when

having to accept my award from the JCI World President on stage in Malta in front of 1400 JCI members.” Well done to all those people, chambers and projects that were shortlisted and especially the award winners – we are proud of you!
