The image accompanying this editorial starkly illustrates a modern paradox: while technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), has become an indispensable part of our lives, it poses profound questions about the essence of wisdom and leadership Featuring a futuristic face composed of smartphone screens juxtaposed with a human heart and a student, the artwork compels us to ponder the implications of relying on machines for guidance and decision-making
AI has revolutionized human development, offering unprecedented benefits AI-powered tools and platforms provide personalized learning experiences, bridging educational gaps and democratizing knowledge access In professional settings, AI streamlines processes, automates routine tasks, and enhances decision-making, thus improving productivity across various industries Furthermore, AI-driven tools aid in the creative process, fostering innovation by handling mundane tasks
Despite these advantages, significant concerns arise from over-reliance on AI The image's tagline, "Wisdom cannot be sought from machines," highlights AI's critical limitation: while it processes information efficiently, it lacks the depth of understanding and ethical reasoning that define human wisdom Over-dependence on AI can erode our ability to think critically, solve problems independently, and make morally sound decisions Additionally, AI's lack of emotional intelligence and empathy creates an emotional disconnect in leadership, potentially leading to decisions that are technically correct but lack compassion and humanity
Ethical and bias concerns also emerge, as AI systems can perpetuate existing inequalities and injustices if trained on biased data. Heavy reliance on AI makes us vulnerable to cyber-attacks and system failures, and the erosion of traditional skills threatens long-term self-sufficiency and resilience
The challenge lies in harmoniously balancing AI's capabilities with human wisdom and leadership To achieve this, AI should augment human abilities rather than replace them, handling data processing and routine tasks while humans focus on areas requiring emotional intelligence, ethical judgment, and creativity. Ethical AI development must be prioritized, ensuring transparency, fairness, and accountability Moreover, education systems should emphasize critical thinking and ethical reasoning, and lifelong learning initiatives should help individuals adapt to technological advancements while retaining essential human skills
As depicted in the powerful image, the relationship between humans and machines is complex By integrating AI responsibly and preserving the core qualities that define our humanity, we can harness the best of both worlds and shape a future that is both technologically advanced and profoundly human
We may have bits of information about the crisis in the Red Sea and have seen and felt the adverse effects on global shipping, but what exactly is going on there and how does this crisis affect and change the current seafaring? Let us go through them and know which way the wind blows
The Red Sea is now facing a crisis due to a surge in regional tension and geopolitical conflicts resulting in attacks on commercial vessels
Significance of the Red Sea to Shipping Business. The Red Sea lies south of the Suez Canal and plays a vital trade route and significant waterway linking the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea and connecting Asia and East Africa to Europe via the Suez Canal
History of Crisis. The Red Sea crisis began on 19 October 2023, when the Iran-backed rebel group (Houthi) in Yemen launched missiles and armed drones at Israel demanding an end to the invasion of the Gaza Strip.
The Houthis have since seized and launched kamikaze attacks against merchant and naval vessels navigating through the Red Sea
Impact on the Maritime Industry. The crisis does not only affect global shipping, but it also creates a ripple effect on the economy, environment, and of course, the seafarers
Impact on Shipping Business and Economy. The crisis is forcing the vessels to reroute and navigate using the Cape of Good Hope route which adds around 10 days or at least 3,500 nautical miles to the voyage steaming times, and to pause commercial operations Billions of dollars of trade goods and supplies pass through the Red Sea annually, therefore, delays have led to soaring freight rates and shipping insurance costs, high petrol prices, unavailability of products, and other aspects of global trade contributing to inflation, thus, adversely affecting the shipping economy
Impact on Environment. Due to the vessel’s rerouting, longer navigation is to be expected Hence, the longer the voyage, the higher the CO2 emissions due to the additional fuel burned
Impact on Seafarers. Consequently, shipping companies have still choices:
a Face the risk of navigating through the Red Sea which means increased shipping insurance costs due to high risk to safety
b Divert the vessel’s route which leads to the risk of delay due to long navigation and probably exposure to adverse weather conditions at open sea
Either way, this has the potential impact on seafarers
Just recently, some of the merchant vessels boarded with innocent people who just wanted to work and provide a better life for their respective families were ruthlessly attacked by the rebel group that caused the destruction of properties and loss of life. Though most ships deployed armed guards on board to defend the ship's crew during an attack, most members of the crew are rarely trained or equipped for this kind of conflict This caused trauma, anxiety, and other disturbances with some considering leaving the trade
Seafarers covered by an ITF agreement worldwide have a contractual right to refuse to sail in designated war zones and demand repatriation at the shipowner's expense.
And yet there are still many questions lingering on our minds When is the right time to say NO? Will it be just fine to refuse even if you just embarked? Will there be no consequences on the part of the seafarer who chose to leave the trade upon the repatriation?
they simply don't like to profit off the pain and the life of the seafarers
Salute to all seafarers. Let there be peace on Earth.
Indeed, this is so sad and scary for the maritime industry. But for me, the top priority is the safety of life as the most important regulation among all other regulations, the SOLAS Regulation is reiterating It may be easy for some Charterers and/or operators to push the vessel and/or pressure the crew to transit in this area for costcutting and commercial matters even though everyone knows that high risk is present and safety would be compromised But I hope in the end we will have clear minds to make wise decisions as we don’t get to choose how are we going to die or when instead we must only decide how are we going to live
With the situation happening now in the Red Sea, I am highly anticipating that ship owners, shipping and crewing companies, and operators will be more reluctant to sail through the area as
Do you think what you know right now is enough for you to thrive and survive?
Based on a published report by QS on 2018 entitled The Global Skills Gap in the 21st Century, there is average of 25 gap indexes on how professionals perceived the sufficiency of skills they have against how employers are satisfied in relation to the skills It was found out that the top five (5) most important skills for employers globally are problem solving, team work, communication, adaptability and interpersonal skills
With this landscape, the question is how to address the skills gap?
We must become a lifelong learner Lifelong learning is a form of self-initiated education that is focused on personal development. Being a lifelong learner can help us achieve personal fulfillment and satisfaction, recognize human’s nature drive to explore, learn and grow, encourage us to improve our quality of life and sense of self – worth and pays attention to the ideas and goals that inspire us In contrary to the common belief, lifelong learning does not only take place inside a classroom Remember when you learned how to ride a bike or learn how to use your smart phone or play online games? You did not enroll to a formal educational institution to have that You learned that through either mentoring from a relative or friend, through observation or experiencing it firsthand
Now, how can you adapt lifelong learning to in your lives just like what I did
Recognize your own personal interests and goals. I have taken free assessments that can be found online for me to have an idea of my strengths and aligned it with my interests and develop goals around it I wanted to achieve the highest level of practice in my specialization and achieved it by applying lifelong learning
Make a list of what you would like to learn or be able to do. The goal I shared in the first step is just one of the many goals I have set. Create a list of your goals and make sure to put weights on which to prioritize By doing this, you will not be overwhelmed of the things you want to do.
Identify how you would like to get involved and the resources available. There are a lot of resources available – and most of them can be found free You can watch videos, listen to podcasts, read books and blogs, find a mentors, enroll to e-learning courses and the likes. For my case, I am fond of enrolling to courses and
watching tutorial videos and such. The combination of resources will be dependent on your learning style and how you can gain the information you want to acquire about your lifelong learning goals
Structure the learning goal into your life. Make a structure about your lifelong learning goal Set a frequency on how to want to do it I usually a lot an hour or two everyday in doing lifelong learning stuffs mentioned in the previous step
Make a commitment! Ensure that you execute what you planned else it will just be a waste Remember, we learn for ourselves, not for someone else.
Lifelong learning took me to places I never knew I can go I hope that you see the beauty of this skill set and start applying it in your lives and see you in places you wanted to go
Just like what Albert Einstein said, “Commit yourself to lifelong learning The most valuable asset you’ll ever have is your mind and what you put into it.”
Let’s continue to be #significantlybetterlifelonglearners, together!
“...weensurethe futureofourplanet a futureinwhichthe harmonybetween humanityandnatureis notmerelyadream, butasharedrealitythat isworthfightingfor.”
The cry to safeguard our environment is becoming increasingly urgent and audible in the dynamic narrative of human advancement Life in all its manifestations is sustained by a delicate balance of ecosystems on our planet, Earth The intricate web of existence is sustained by each element, from the depths of our oceans to the towering rainforests However, our actions frequently disrupt this equilibrium, endangering the very systems that sustain us, despite the wonders of modernity.
Initially, the environment serves as our life support system Our health and well-being are sustained by these essentials: clean air, pure water, and fertile soil Our quality of existence is guaranteed by the preservation of these resources, in addition to our survival It is evident that the world we leave to future generations is influenced by our actions today, as we observe the repercussions of environmental degradation, pollution, deforestation, and climate change
In addition to ensuring our survival, biodiversity is essential for our resilience The stability of an ecosystem is influenced by the presence of each species, from the tiniest insect to the largest whale Our capacity to adjust to evolving circumstances is compromised by the loss of biodiversity, which poses a threat to economic stability and food security
Additionally, the services that our natural landscapes offer are invaluable Wetlands buffer against floods, forests purify our air, and coral reefs safeguard coastlines from cyclones These ecosystems are not merely scenic; they are the infrastructure of nature, they are the backbone of our planet, supporting all life on Earth.
In the end, the necessity of safeguarding our environment surpasses any immediate benefits. It represents a moral obligation to responsibly manage the Earth's resources, thereby guaranteeing a sustainable future in which human progress coexists with the flourishing of nature By advocating for policy change, embracing sustainable practices, and investing in conservation, we ensure the future of our planet a future in which the harmony between humanity and nature is not merely a dream, but a shared reality that is worth fighting for

“Leadership is not an easy job. Being a president is not an easy job. Leadership will subject you to stresses, to criticisms, but at the end of the day, if you know your biggest why then definitely nothing is going to stop you. You may not be favorable for others but again it’s the desire to bring and learn and what you can offer to the table. Once you learn, and you impart your knowledge, whether your favorable or not, then you can be the best version of yourself. Take risk, take the gamble and have fun in learning.”

In a bold move to combat environmental degradation and promote sustainable practices, Project Mundo has unveiled its latest initiative aimed at fostering a greener and cleaner community. Now on its third year, the project aims to tackle two critical environmental issues simultaneously: deforestation and marine pollution.
Central to Project Mundo's mission is the widespread planting of trees across Lemery, Batangas Recognizing the vital role trees play in combating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide, improving air quality, and providing habitats for wildlife, the initiative aims to plant thousands of trees in designated areas over the next year.
"With each tree planted, we're not just adding greenery to our landscape; we're investing in a sustainable future for generations to come," remarked Project Mundo's chairperson Katrine Caag highlighting the project's commitment to environmental stewardship.
Beyond terrestrial efforts, Project Mundo is also focusing on the health of our oceans and coastal areas Coastal clean-ups will be organized regularly, mobilizing volunteers to remove plastic waste, debris, and other pollutants that threaten marine life and coastal ecosystems.
"Protecting our oceans is crucial to preserving biodiversity and ensuring the well-being of coastal communities," emphasized by Caag "Through these clean-ups, we're taking concrete steps to mitigate the impact of pollution and promote cleaner, healthier seas"
Project Mundo's initiative isn't just about actions; it's about inspiring collective responsibility and fostering community engagement Local residents, schools, LGU’s, and civic organizations were invited to participate actively in tree-planting activities and coastal clean-ups, turning environmental awareness into tangible action The project was able to forge partnerships with MENRO, CENRO, the barangays concerned and the Municipality of Lemery
As Project Mundo gains momentum, organizers are optimistic about the positive impact their initiative will have on the environment and community spirit. "By planting trees and cleaning our coasts, we're sowing the seeds of a cleaner, greener future," concluded by Caag
With enthusiasm and determination, Project Mundo aims to set a precedent for environmental stewardship and inspire similar initiatives worldwide, proving that collective action can indeed make a world of difference in preserving our planet for future generations
