Hi, My name is Jiwon Chung and I am a third-year architecture student at Texas Tech University. My interest in architecture began during a later phase compared to the average architecture student. I do not have any family that pursued architecture as an area of expertise, and it was difficult for me to discover architecture as a potential career to pursue. However, after studying architecture for three years, I was fascinated by the subject and am pursuing my dream to be an architect. Starting comparatively late in this major has motivated me to put forth more effort to match and surpass my peers. I do not wish to work on a project with the mindset that it is something I need to do to get paid, however, I consider projects as making my ideas and architectural vision into a reality. I am a hard worker who does not take shortcuts, rather I thoroughly consider the experiences and lessons people would obtain from my creativity.

Architecture provides the freedom to design anything I desire. The field does not impose a lot of restrictions or limits and all designs presented are discussed openly. Nothing is thrown away and with every single idea containing meaning, passion, and secrets to discover. I like how my ideas can be turned into a usable form, I enjoy learning how to make abstract constructs a shared reality, and making those ideas feel alive. I get to express my ideas and hidden messages without saying anything and that’s a beautiful property of architecture.

Portfolio is a book of creativity which acquires the possibility of improvement. Each project has meaning and purpose that shows the progress I am making. They are showing the variety of possibilities of creativity and vision of myself on how the projects could be done with the given problems. It is not only the result of the projects, but it is to show the steps that motivates me to do better.

To be a great architect it is important to be acutely aware of the entire world around us. Not only when designing buildings, but creating sculptures, crafting furniture, planning transportation, mapping out streets, and more. I want to challenge myself with this different aspects of architecture, then incorporate these newfound ideas elsewhere, so the creativity is not limited to what people are familiar with. In order to do that, architects need to research the culture, population density, sun path, wind path, vegetation, technology, and other forces to create living spaces for people to reside comfortably and safely with an amazing experience.

Simple design is not suggestive in architecture. However, it can still retain individuality with varying materials, textures, and skin. This is another reason why I am fascinated by architecture. Even with the same base, you can create multitudes of individual characteristics. I want to design something that no one has done in the past. I am pursuing this architectural journey to demonstrate how design can turn out and surprise people to see something from a different perspective. I want my work in architecture to leave a legacy that inspires the next generation of architects.

SUMMER SOLSTICE

The concept for this project is derived from the Orpheus and Eurydice mythology. The concept is a connection between the underworld and the livingworld. The designs are separating these two spaces. Many curves are applied in the designs to emphasize this connection.

The pavilion has a reading area under the ramp which represents the underworld. With the texture, the sculpture provides shading with sun rays coming through that looks like a sun. This represents the livingworld.

H O M E AWAY F R O M H O M E IN STUDIO: MODEL 3RD PLACE Home Away from Home is a dorm designed for international students in Covid-19 pandemic. Some international students are forced to leave their school dormitories and have nowhere to go. This is the solution for them. It’s not only a place for them to stay but also a place for safety. The closest each dorms can get is 8ft and has an ultraviolet light area to kill the virus. Each dorm includes air filters to sanitize the interior and grass on both the first and second floors to capture air pollutants. It is constructed with 48 containers and has dorm rooms and public shower facilities.

HERE + NOW The design concept is inspired by Jean Nouvel. According to his concepts, Honeycomb Garden is designed with combination of geometry and nature. The house is built with hexagon shape, and has plenty of garden areas and skylights.

The client is a family who recently got married and wish to have children in the future. They desired natural light for the house ambience. They also wanted to have an outside space to relax on which this house includes balcony.

GEOMETRY STUDY

P E R S P E C T I V E

Pentagons are used in this project. Experimenting how the pentagon can change its form but still following the pentagon grid was a challenge. The variables applied in the pattern are color, size, split, and rotation. Based on the pattern, one portion (middle left) was extruded for the model making. The model is created with four layers.

The crossing structures on the top are applied on the bottom similarily to show harmony, same as the ladder structures on the left and right.

The purpose of this project was to create excitement from all view points.

OCEAN ARCANA “ B O X WA L L’ B U I L D I N G FA C A D E The building is intended for an innovative software company. The owner would like to renovate the existing building facade and wants it to have an interconnection between science, technology, and art. Therefore, Ocean Arcana has five facade layers: three on the front, one in the middle, and one in the back. Concept for this project is Marble Cave and the facade is designed within the steps of how Marble Cave is formed.

DESIGN PROCESS The architecture form is based on the concept diagram, Time. And the site design is based on Teleportation. The entrance is dynamic to welcome visitors and first leads them to the gift shop underground. After passing the bridge in the center, there is an art walkway which follows the Las Plazas Arts Distric. The architecture program containes enough restaurants and free buffet for employees to use. Underground, first, and second floors are designed for visitor’s use and the art gallery involves a great view of San Jacinto Plaza. The offices are mostly open to share ideas better and manager offices are adjacent to other employes to have a family environment. Plenty of outdoor spaces are included for the same reason as well. The skin has a lot of windows to allow natural light and the design looks like a puzzle as an Enigmatic meaning.

The most challenge of this project was the structure. Every floor is cantilevering except the first floor. And each floor is rotated which the columns cannot go through every floor except the center area. The solution to hold this structure was to place truss around the building where the translucent panel walls are, using open web joist, joist acting as beams, placing one-foot columns as much as I can, and placing four 4-feet columns in the center to support all the structures. Another challenge was placing the restrooms and elevators. Since they cannot go through every floor, they are located in different place starting fourth floor.

The concept for this project is derived from the Orpheus and Eurydice mythology. The concept is a connection between the underworld and the livingworld. Many curves are applied in the designs to emphasize this connection.

The south view of the building has mostly curve designs and the north view of the building has mostly right angles to identify the underworld and livingworld.

INVENTORY EXPERIMENT This project was to build a building with twenty different kinds of inventory that was given by an instructor. It was built as a residential building.

1st floor: Living room (aquarium and stage for performance) 2nd floor: Exhibition area 3rd floor: Bedroom 4th floor: Open garden (fountain, outdoor library, and space to look at the stars next to the fountain) Stairs are colored black or frosted to give a unique style to the house. This house has a performing stage to prepare for a party in the client’s busy life. The art display area is allowing for a small amount of sun to protect the arts quality. Finally, the open garden is relaxing with the unique shape of the library space and the sound of water flow while entering the garden.

It is a slim house in between two buildings for the client, Emma Watson.

Emma Watson loves books, paintings, drawings, dancing, and to workout. She is a certified yoga teacher, actress, and a model. She is also open with people.

Interior included: private movie theater, art studio, gym, library, and bar The private movie theater and bar are outdoors to enjoy nature.

An elevator and multiple closets are included as well so she can rest by reducing the amount of walking and being able to change clothes a lot as implied by one of her job descriptions.

C O M PA N Y B O O T H : R A N U N C U L U S T R A N S F O R M AT I O N “Ranunculus Transformation” is a cosmetic brand for visually impaired communities. It is named after the flower because of its meaning and how it transforms into a flower. Even though the blind people cannot see, they are attrative and charming which is the symbolism of Ranunclus. It helps them overcome their obstacles and “transfer” into a beautiful flower, Ranuncluls.

The main product for this brand is the lipstick. It is bright and gives a garden feeling with floating petals at the bottom part of the lipstick, which was fallen from the petals covered in the middle part of the lipstick.

Transparent material is used to add a luxurious taste on the product.

Even though the product has good quality, the design can be interrupted by people from buying because they desire to possess charming products to show off to others. The products can be used by all types of people.

The front of the brochure is especially more considered. It shows the logo of the company and the braill to represent that this company is different.

The braille is giving the company’s name and the visually impaired community can reach out to the company easier.

OUTSIDE OBSERVATION

The two tallest buildings are similar to each other by using a unique block style which adds interest to a city. Also the right corner building has a nature pattern which indicates leaves.

Each of these drawings were done in twenty minutes at El Paso Community College. The angles and the contrast were focused the most, which did not contain much detail. However, it is easy to tell where these locations are within the campus, because the main objects and patterns are there to support identifying their locations.

Land of Light is about value of life.

The different size of trees around the memorial represent hope and their reflection on memorial’s black granite wall encourage people to start a new life.

The two entrances give a feeling of getting closer to those who passed away by the explosion The walkway is designed on wooden floors to give a sense of ‘home’ being with their beloved ones.

From the west entrance, people can see the sunrise. From the east entrance, they can see the sunset. These sun movements are symbolizing hope of starting a new life.

Sunflowers in the middle have a symbolism of unconditional love. As many people are aware, sunflowers face the sun for their love for the sun. However, not many know what happens to them at night. They face east to wait for the sun‘s return in the morning.

They are incorporated to show that the victims are in heaven and that their family will always remember and love them even though they are far away from each other.

As to the lines in the circle, the water drops are dropping on each of these lines which are lighted inside. Each water drop represents each victim’s life. The enormous circle represents the endless hugging from their family. The water drops flow down to the sunflower for their growth. Even after their deaths, they are giving hope to their beloved by water drops aiding in the sunflower’s growth as starting a new life.
