Women’s History Month takes place in March each year, and celebrates different achievements and contributions women have made across the globe in the fight for women ’ s rights. Women in America did not always have the same rights and freedoms as they do now. For example, women did not have the right to vote until 1919 when the 19th Amendment was passed. However, it wasn’t until 1924 when Native American women were able to secure the right to vote.

In 1932, Hattie Caraway became the first woman to serve a full term as a US senator of Arkansas, and in 1933 Frances Perkins became the first female cabinet member.

In 1963, the Equal Pay Act was passed, requiring everyone to be paid the same for doing the same job regardless of race or sex. Title IX prohibits discrimination in academic activities. Additionally, in 1963, Valentina Tereshkova (Soviet Union) became the first woman in space. A woman has yet to go to the moon, but the first woman is expected to be Christina Koch on the Artemis II when it launches in September 2025. The fight for women ’ s rights is still fought everyday. Women still do not receive the same pay as their male counterparts in the US despite the passage of the Equal Pay Act, with women receiving 82 cents for every dollar a man makes (Pew Research Center). Progress has been made across the globe for women ’ s rights, but our society still has a long way to go for equality. Remembering the women who helped fight for women ’ s rights across the globe and recognizing the women who continue the fight is why Women’s history month is celebrated.

JCHS Student's Prefered Easter Treat!

"Reese's, because my dad’s favorite candy is Reese’s and he always gets a new pack during the holidays. When I was little, he would reward us with his special Reese’s for doing extra things to help out. I’ve grown to love them, despite their simple nature."

"Whoppers, because Whoppers are crunchy. They're shaped like spheres. They're my favorite candy. They make me happy."

"Lollipop ring pops, because when I was younger, me and my sister would eat these all the time and pretend we were getting married to someone and just have tons of fun and I miss those days."

"Jelly Beans, because my grandparents stuffed our Easter eggs with jelly beans each year and they are a special memory from my childhood."

Ask Anything Ask Anything

Dear Brier & Chloe, I'm super busy this spring.... how do I manage my time better?

Brier: I would start with a plan which should be something realistic to you. Also, make sure to recognize things that are at a higher priority than others. Once you have your tasks you can set time limits for when you want to get each task done. This can be as simple as having a list on a sticky note with a timer on your phone.

Chloe: That's a great question! I feel like time management is a skill that will never be fully perfected, but here are some of my tips. Having a to-do list organized by priority really helps me understand what tasks I need to do in the time I have. In addition, tools like planners and productivity apps also really help.

How did your education at JCHS help foster your passion for politics?

Just being in Jefferson City, with people like the Mayor's Daughter and Amy Blunt, and surrounded by so many peers whose parents work for the state- it's just a part of living at Jefferson City- politics affects all of us.

What valuable lessons have you learned as the Secretary of State of missouri?

It's been reinforced that you have to seek insight from others and listen to other people, it's really helped me to get out and talk and listen to people around the entire state. It's also important to find a balance between collaboration and decision making.

Who is your greatest role model and Why?

Jesus, because the whole idea of servant leadership and helping other people to be better. Focusing on actually serving the people.

What two items would you take to a desert island?

A hatchet and rope. As an engineer, there's a lot of things you can do with the two.

What was one of your greatest challenges, and how did you overcome it?

It's very difficult to know when to stop compromising on policy: you have to know that to push forward policy, you will have to compromise on it, but you have to stop when you begin to compromise on values.

What do you recommend for high schoolers wanting to get involved in politics?

Get involved by finding and supporting a candidate or politician that they are interested in, or join political clubs and groups. This can help you learn about what it's like and make a difference.

What is a important lesson you were taught at JCHS?

Hard work is rewards and procrastination is not. The further you go in life, the harder things get. Creating good habits early is invaluable and having to correct bad habits later is a real pain in the neck,

Tv Shows, Books, or movies?

Books: I just like reading a good book. If you go to a library, you can go anywhere.

The Jefferson City High School "Jays" basketball team faced a challenging journey marked by setbacks and triumphs. Amidst the adversity of forfeiting 11 games, they displayed resilience and determination, bouncing back with vigor. Winning their next four games, they clinched a spot in the state championships. Their grit was further tested in the state playoffs, where they engaged in an intense battle against Parkview, emerging victorious in overtime with a narrow 58-57 win.

Advancing to the final four, they showcased their prowess by defeating Vianney 63-59, securing a berth in the state finals. Although they ultimately fell short against De Smet Jesuit in a 56-75 loss, their valiant efforts earned them a commendable second place in the class 5 state rankings. Despite the disappointment of defeat, the Jays' remarkable journey showcased their resilience and strength, solidifying their status as a formidable force in high school basketball, prevailing over their rivals Capital City and Helias Catholic along the way.

Are you looking up at the sky and feeling bad about the state of the world? Don’t worry; your ’ re not the only one. Since 1970, Earth Day has been held on April 22nd as a time to reflect on ways humanity can achieve greater sustainability. You may be thinking, “Hey, I recycle, isn’t that enough?” However, recycling is only a small aspect of cultivating a future with rich ecosystems and long-lasting resources the next generations can appreciate. Let’s all enter our Green Era by practicing the three R’s of environmental protection: reducing, reusing, and finally, recycling.

Reduce Reuse Recycle

By not creating waste in the first place, landfills don’t grow into the surrounding areas. Trying to limit the single-use containers, paper towels, or plastic bags will significantly benefit our environment!

Reusing items goes hand in hand with reducing waste: consider swapping the Starbucks your water bottle, Ziploc bags for Tupperware, sheet masks for reusable skincare, thirfted clothes instead of fast fashion.

Obviously, you probably already make an effort to recycle: still, up your game by sorting glass, plastic, paper, and aluminum. Make sure you also exclude contaminated items like pizza boxes and takeout cups.

The Flag of Ireland

The flag of Ireland features a deep, rich green, a pure white, and an earthy orange. Historically, Ireland has suffered internal conflict between its high Protestant Christian and Catholic populations. The green on the flag represents Roman Catholics while the orange represents Protestants. The white in the middle represents peace and unity between the two factions.

Saint Patrick’s Day is a religious and cultural holiday held every March 17th. Originally, it was held to mark the death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. Now it has moved more towards being a celebration of Irish culture. It is full of parades, special foods, music and dancing, good luck charms, and all things green!
