Each of our lives has a ripple effect on others. All of us leave a legacy.

When I joined the Jewish Community Foundation in 2005, the Endowment Leadership Institute and Create a Jewish Legacy programs were still in their early stages. Since their inception in 2004, these initiatives have transformed the landscape of Jewish collaboration and philanthropy in San Diego. Their remarkable success has been instrumental in securing over $200 million in future commitments for Jewish organizations throughout the city.

Moreover, over $100 million has already been received in current gifts, significantly contributing to the sustainability and longevity of our synagogues, agencies, and day schools. The generosity of individuals and families who have made these contributions underscores their commitment to ensuring a vibrant and enduring Jewish community in San Diego for generations to come.

The Jewish Community Foundation takes pride in having designed and implemented this program, which has now become a national model supported by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation under the Life & Legacy initiative.

As you explore this tribute book, which honors and recognizes all the Create a Jewish Legacy Society Members, you will see that the essence of a legacy is its personal nature. You have the opportunity to make a gift to an endowment fund or plan a bequest to any program or institution that holds special significance to you.

The Jewish Community Foundation offers complimentary and confidential legacy planning consultations. We invite you to join the over 1,400 individuals and families who have already created their legacy, and we would be truly honored to assist you in beginning this meaningful journey today.

What is a legacy plan?

The beauty of a Jewish legacy is that it's yours to create. You can leave a bequest (a gift in your will or estate) to any program or institution that's close to your heart. Chances are you already donate to these organizations.

Honor your lifetime of giving by including your favorite organization(s) in your charitable estate plans.

Your Passion. Your Plan. Your Legacy.

Our Create a Jewish Legacy Story

In April 2004, the Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) launched an unprecedented program for the San Diego Jewish community – the Endowment Leadership Institute (ELI). Initially bringing together 12 Jewish organizations, synagogues, and day schools, participants collaborate towards the common goal of establishing endowments for the long-term financial sustainability of our Jewish community. ELI provides training, consulting, coaching, and marketing as part of a comprehensive, high-quality, program. The effort of the professionals and lay leaders at participating organizations, to encourage and secure the creation of charitable estates is known as Create a Jewish Legacy. This visionary program has been responsible for expanding the culture of giving in San Diego by raising endowment dollars to help ensure that vital programs, services, and institutions flourish now and in the future.

What will your Legacy be?

Once individuals or families commit a legacy gift of any amount to one or more Jewish organizations, they are invited to provide a personal statement to be included in the San Diego Jewish Community’s Book of Life. The inscriptions in the Book of Life detail the personal thoughts, life experiences, and philanthropic vision that inspired the commitment. These statements, along with photos of the donor or family, are kept on permanent display at the JCF offices and on our website. Each year, a few families are invited to be interviewed for a Book of Life video to complement their Book of Life statement. These statements and videos inspire others to include Jewish organizations in their charitable plans.

The success of the Create a Jewish Legacy program in San Diego caught national attention and was adopted by the Harold Grinspoon Foundation to become the model for Life & Legacy. Since its launch, donors have committed almost a billion dollars in future gifts to participating organizations across North America, securing a strong Jewish future.

As part of our mission to ensure the future of the Jewish community, the Jewish Community Foundation offers complimentary, confidential legacy planning services to both Jewish and non-Jewish community members. In addition, JCF partners with professional advisors in documenting legacy intentions and promoting philanthropic giving. With every customized legacy plan drafted, the goal is to honor that individual’s lifetime of giving.

It has been said that you die twice; one time when you stop breathing and a second time, when somebody says your name for the last time. We work hard to ensure that the community will remember the names of the generous donors that have safeguarded our community’s future, turning their memories into blessings.

BOOK OF LIFE STATEMENTS

Edgar and Julie Berner

It is our hope and prayer that our five children teach their children tzedakah, personal and social responsibility, love of our country in spite of its faults, love of learning and education, love of family and friendships, and an understanding of all the beautiful wisdom contained in the teachings of Judaism.

Phil and Ellen (z”l) Lorang

America and the last 70 years are remarkable. They have been so favorable to the prosperity, health, and safety of Jews in general, and to us and our children in particular. Still, the challenges ahead for Jews in America are obvious and many. How could we not put a plan in place to leave a portion of our estates to the Jewish organizations in San Diego, and elsewhere, that have been important to us?

Eva and Ari Isaak

We believe deeply that it is our responsibility to work the soil and to water the roots of our Jewish home. We promise to take action and to nourish this community that has given us so much in return – a spiritual home.

Pat Libby and Mike Eichler

Although only one of us was raised Jewish, both of us have dedicated our lives to Tikkun Olam. Making the decision to provide legacy support to our shul was a natural extension of those beliefs and reflects our desire to ensure that Jewish practices and traditions continue to shape the next generation.

See page 38 for your Book of Life invitation.

REMEMBERING & HONORING

Joan Jacobs (z”l)

Joan and her husband, Dr. Irwin Jacobs, are extraordinarily generous philanthropists who have truly embodied tikkun olam - in San Diego, in Israel, and in the world. Their contributions to Jewish life, health and social services, education, arts and culture, and more have greatly improved our beautiful community and will leave an indelible mark for generations to come.

To support an organization because of valuing what the organization does for the Community

endowment leadership INSTITUT

A Program of the Jewish Community Foundation San Diego

Endowment Leadership Institute participation empowers Jewish organizations to focus on building their long-term sustainability.

In April 2004, the Jewish Community Foundation launched an unprecedented program for the Jewish community – the Endowment Leadership Institute (ELI). Initially bringing together 12 Jewish organizations, synagogues, and day schools, we soon discovered that multiple organizations could successfully collaborate towards the common goal of establishing endowments for the long-term vitality of our Jewish community.

ELI currently provides training, consulting, coaching and marketing as part of a comprehensive, highquality, results-oriented program for professionals and lay leaders from 24 organizations.

Today, 1,400 individuals and families have committed to legacies that will yield an estimated $200 million to ensure a vibrant Jewish future.

Gail Littman Living Legacy Endowment Fund

The Gail Littman Living Legacy Endowment Fund was established in memory of Gail Littman, her vision in creating the ELI program and expanding it to other communities, her leadership at the Jewish Community Foundation, and the incredible impact she made in Jewish legacy giving.

You can contribute to this fund! See page 37.

These Local Organizations

currently partner in the Jewish Community Foundation’s Create a Jewish Legacy program to build endowments for a strong Jewish future in San Diego.

Making a Difference

in the lives of future Jewish generations.

Your thoughtful planning will ensure its success.

Ann and Richard Jaffe IN THEIR OWN WORDS

San Diego Jewish Academy is their passion and will be one of their major legacies in San Diego. But it also reveals so much about their Jewish values and their outlook on life.

Giving is often considered a detached or dispassionate act. But many times, the person giving ultimately gains as much as the recipient, in ways that can be tangible or intangible. “We go from success to significance and elevate our souls by helping elevate others,” as Richard shared in the context of asking others to support the Academy. The Jaffes don’t have any expectation of something in return for their philanthropy. They

just know from decades of giving that it tends to yield rewards in many ways, including the satisfaction of seeing Jewish students grow into future leaders.

Judaism informs their values and has always been an important part of their lives. The couple like to make annual grants each year to nonprofits on their anniversary – reflecting their shared value of giving back. Richard noted the additional assurance they feel with JCF housing and managing the SDJA endowment, ensuring that their decades of support for Jewish education in San Diego will continue their legacy indefinitely.

Thanks to a remarkable bequest gift to the Jewish Community Foundation by the late Joel and Arlene Moskowitz, in their memory, and supported by their daughters Michelle-Shari Kruss and Danielle Ambrose, we are pleased to announce the establishment of the Moskowitz Legacy Resource Center, a dedicated suite in the Jewish Community Foundation offices. This center provides a space for community members to design their personal legacy plans with guidance from staff. Organizations throughout San Diego are invited to host their Legacy Society Members, hold intimate meetings, and conduct board discussions in this suite. This community center will serve as a convening space to inspire, enable, and encourage support for our community for many years to come.

BOOK OF LIFE STATEMENTS

Morris (z”l) and Zita Liebermensch

On behalf of our family, we are most grateful for the opportunity to perpetuate the Jewish tradition of “tzedakah” with our legacy gift.

We especially want to remember and honor all those who came before us; give love and support to all those in the here and now; and be ever mindful to secure a safe and caring future to all those who are to follow.

David and Claire Ellman

We are honored to fulfill our obligation of supporting the Jewish community through the mitzvah of “tzedakah”.

Our children are our precious gifts. It is our responsibility to create and enhance every possible opportunity for them and their fellow Jews to live a rich life steeped in our Jewish heritage and teachings.

Joseph Cohen

The ability to give back and contribute – of time, talent, and financial capacity – is a motivating force for me. I am inspired to help others and understand their charitable capacity for doing good in the world. In the mode of living through giving we enhance our true happiness.

My legacy gift to JCF San Diego is in the belief that a vibrant community foundation will provide strong leadership for the larger Jewish community of San Diego – and elsewhere. Jewish Family Service and the Jewish Community Center are central to the quality of community life and are beneficiaries of legacy gifts.

I am grateful to live in a wonderful city, surrounded by inspiring examples of philanthropy, and desire to do ever more to secure the future of the Jewish community.

Legacy Giving Options

What’s right for you?

Creating your Jewish Legacy through planned giving enables you to have a lasting impact on the organizations you care so much about. Below are some of the ways to achieve your long-term charitable goals.

Bequest

Naming Jewish Community Foundation, or other organizations, in your will or trust. This is the most popular planned giving method and the simplest. A comprehensive and custom Legacy Plan will be created.

Charitable Gift Annuity

A simple contract between you and the Foundation in which you make an irrevocable gift of cash or securities in exchange for lifetime income based on age. Part of the payments are tax-free. After your lifetime, your chosen organization(s) receives the remainder of the funds.

Charitable Lead Trust

A trust prepared by your attorney. Potentially receive an income tax deduction, provide your favorite organization income for a fixed term, and the remaining assets return to you or other named family members.

Retirement Plan Assets

Most types of retirement plans are heavily taxed at death so they are advantageous assets for giving. Name the Foundation or your favorite organization(s) as beneficiary while avoiding income and estate tax for your heirs.

Endowment Fund

A permanent fund that supports your favorite organization(s) in perpetuity. Distributes a fixed percentage of the fund to your chosen organization(s) each year.

Charitable Remainder Trust

A trust prepared by your attorney that provides you with income and a tax deduction upon creation. The remainder of the trust is distributed to your favorite organization(s). Useful for complex assets, such as real estate. More flexibility than a gift annuity to select the level of income.

Life Insurance

Name the Foundation or your favorite organization(s) as partial or sole beneficiary of your policy. Leverage your giving by naming a new policy or transferring an existing policy to the Foundation to be designated to your favorite organization(s). You may receive an immediate and future income tax deduction for the premiums paid or value of the transferred policy.

We can help you!

BOOK OF LIFE STATEMENTS

Marjory Kaplan

My endowment for the Jewish people reflects the joy and energy I find throughout our community. As the previous CEO of the Jewish Community Foundation, I feel blessed to have witnessed so many heart-filled conversations about giving back to the community. Meeting with people of all ages and backgrounds, I understand how the strength of our Jewish values compels us to the obligation of tzedakah and leaving the world a better place.

For my family, I am signing the Book of Life to honor my parents, Rita and Myron Joshel, who showed me through their actions what it means to be generous and active in a community. For future generations, I want to help pass on the powerful values that this book represents.

Dr. Larry and Rebecca Newman (z”l)

When it was time to think about the legacy we wanted to leave our children it was important to us that through our endowments they would appreciate how greatly our involvement with our community had added richness and texture to our lives. We also wanted to insure that succeeding generations of young Jewish families would find a strong and vibrant community awaiting their participation.

SAN DIEGO’S Jewish History

San Diego’s Jewish settlers arrived in 1850 with California’s statehood looking for adventure, good weather, better health, and, above all, the opportunity to make the American dream their own. Many who arrived in San Diego were responsible for shaping the early town, building theaters, owning vast tracts of land, engaging in civic service, and participating in politics.

These early Jewish pioneers were not only pioneers in San Diego, but pioneers in a new country as well. As the 19th century drew to a close, more and more Jews were arriving on American shores seeking a better life for themselves and in doing so, made life better for the communities in which they settled.

In the early 20th century, San Diego’s Jewish community faced obstacles to greater community involvement as restrictive covenants (race restrictions) were attached to particular neighborhood subdivisions like La Jolla, pushing those who helped to fund and build San Diego out of particular locations. But by 1963, Jonas Salk, a Jewish medical researcher and virologist, established the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, (designed by a Jewish architect, Louis I. Kahn) and with the completion of UCSD—a school intending to specialize in the intersection between biology and technology—the restrictions were ended as Jewish scientists were some of the top in their fields.

Today, San Diego’s Jewish community thrives and is different than other Jewish populations in other parts of the state and country. 19% of San Diego County’s Jewish population was born outside the United States, including South Africa and mainly Mexico.

What is an Endowment?

An endowment fund is a perpetual fund that is invested for growth and provides a source of ongoing annual support to address charitable causes. Consistent annual distributions, through up and down markets, create a mechanism for a forever fund.

Organizations that establish endowment funds are demonstrating the commitment that they will be fulfilling their mission for decades to come. An endowment can also provide financial security to those organizations taking on new challenges or seizing new opportunities as they arise.

Individuals can establish named endowment funds at the Jewish Community Foundation to support their favorite organizations on an annual basis or as a legacy to their children to distribute.

A Treasured Archive for Our San Diego Community Individuals and families who have planned a legacy gift, or who have contributed to an endowment for a Jewish organization, are encouraged to provide a personal statement to be included in the San Diego Community’s Book of Life. The Jewish Community Foundation San Diego honors and celebrates our Book of Life signers.

These excerpts are from full statements that detail personal thoughts, life experiences, and philanthropic visions that have inspired legacy commitments to Jewish organizations.

Lee and Frank (z”l) Goldberg

Our strong Jewish feelings about tzedakah started with my father, Frank Winicki. He lost his family in the Holocaust, except for two nieces.

He was a strong Zionist in support of Israel. Each of our furniture stores sent $5000 a month to Israel; we even bought an Israeli car. When Israel became a state, my father had a big celebration with a party.

As the years passed our focus turned to our elderly Jewish community, starting with the Hebrew Home for the Aged. Our parents were founders of the home. Today it is the beautiful Seacrest Foundation. Frank and I served on UJF Boards.

We have learned that it is not what you gather but what you scatter that matters.

Barbara Bry

I feel that my life has exceeded my expectations. This is why my estate includes a gift to the Jewish Community Foundation and other Jewish organizations, as well as the establishment of a donor advised fund for my two daughters, Sarah and Rachel. It is my hope that the experience of helping our community will enrich their lives as much as it has mine.
