Dear Friends: “The play’s the thing” is not just a quote from Hamlet, but the theme for the upcoming Cleveland Israel Arts Connection season. During the next few months you will experience Israeli theater in myriad ways.

This March, prominent Israeli actor-director Roy Horovitz returns to Cleveland for a residency where he will speak on Israel’s theater scene at @Akiva, CWRU’s Siegal Lifelong Learning, and Oberlin College and Conservatory.

In May, and in celebration of the 70th Anniversary of Israeli statehood, Bill Rudman and The Musical Theater Project will present a special program called, “The Impact of Milk and Honey.” Written shortly after the founding of Israel, Milk and Honey is set against the backdrop of the country’s struggle for recognition as an independent nation. Yiddish theater star Molly Picon starred in the original Broadway cast.

We are especially proud that Dobama Theatre will be producing the American Premiere of On the Grill this summer, starring Cleveland’s own leading lady, Dorothy Silver. In On the Grill, playwright Dror Keren, a native of the Jezreel Valley, returns to the landscapes of his childhood, and on one highly charged night, Israel’s Independence Day, he brings about a confrontation between parents and children, the founding generation and the younger generation, and the home we dreamed of and what it is today.

The celebration of Israel’s independence continues throughout the spring and summer with offerings that include music, visual art, literature, and film – all detailed on the following pages.

THEATER Artist-in-Residence

ROY HOROVITZ March 12 –14

Roy Horovitz is one of Israel’s leading actor-directors and holds a B.A. and M.A. in Theater, with distinction, from Tel Aviv University. An award-winning actor, Horovitz has performed in myriad shows and theaters in Israel. He has also appeared in several television series and in films. Horovitz returns to Cleveland after his highly regarded performances at Dobama Theatre last summer.

Horovitz has directed a succession of critically acclaimed productions that have been performed throughout Israel and around the world. He regularly conducts workshops for drama students and high school pupils, and is in demand as a lecturer for Israel drama and play analysis. Horovitz was named a Schusterman Visiting Israeli Artist, and will be in residency at the University of Texas-Austin in Winter/Spring 2018.

Horovitz is the recipient of many awards, including “Best Actor” in 1997 at the Haifa International Festival and again in 2010, and “Best Director” in 2011 at Cameri Theater.

LET’S NOT WASTE A MOMENT: THE IMPACT OF “MILK AND HONEY” Presented by The Musical Theater Project When you fall in love as a middle-aged couple, how does that compare with a romance when you’re young? The 1961 musical Milk and Honey explores the question against the colorful, passionate backdrop of the state of Israel, then just 13 years old.

In 2018, we celebrate the 70th anniversary of statehood by telling the story behind the first Broadway production with music and lyrics by Jerry Herman, who went on to write three of the biggest hits of his time: Hello, Dolly!, Mame and La Cage aux Folles.

David Broza returns to Cleveland to celebrate Israel at 70! He will be joined by Tamar Eisenman and Maya Isac, two singers relatively new to the Israeli music scene.

Israeli superstar David Broza is considered one of the world’s most dynamic and vibrant performers. From his whirlwind finger picking to Flamenco percussion and rhythms, to a signature rock and roll sound, David Broza’s charismatic and energetic performances have delighted audiences throughout the world. Broza’s music reflects a fusion of the three countries in which he was raised: Israel, Spain and England.

A powerful musician, passionate peace advocate and music industry innovator, David Broza awes and inspires audiences with his sincere message and musical allure.

Tamar Eisenman is one of Israel’s unique voices. This young yet experienced artist brings an exact combination of vulnerability and ruggedness, shyness and extroversion, rock & folk, all these blends into a fabulous musical concoction she calls “Hip-Rock.” Growing up in Israel she was eager to create a new female voice in Israel’s rock music scene by exploring various influences of gender identities and cultural fluidities. Maya Isac is a New York City-based artist native to Karkom, Israel, with South African roots. She initially made a name for herself performing throughout Israel with her guitar, capturing the ears of many with her unique voice and vulnerable presence.

In early 2012 Maya won Israel’s prestigious ACUM award for “Best New Artist.” The committee noted, “The past few years have opened their gates to Israeli artists singing in English. Maya is one of the unique voices in this genre. With hard and diligent work, Maya has succeeded in establishing herself over the past year, as one of the most invigorating discoveries in the folk-rock scene. Her extraordinary voice and feminine songs have carved the way for Maya to the center of the stage.”

The musical centerpiece of Two Faiths: One Spirit is Sarajevo Haggadah: Book of Songs by the acclaimed Bosnian composer and accordionist Merima Klujčo. Georgianborn Israeli composer Josef Bardanashvili has reimagined Klujčo’s original composition and created a new piece for chamber orchestra.

Nikolaj Znaider performs at the highest level as both conductor and virtuoso violin soloist with the world’s most-distinguished orchestras. He has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Mariinsky Orchestra Saint Petersburg since 2010.

The Sarajevo Haggadah is an illuminated manuscript that contains the illustrated traditional text of the Passover Haggadah which accompanies the Passover Seder. It is one of the oldest Sephardic Haggadahs in the world, originating in Barcelona around 1350.

FRONT is a new art triennial coming to Cleveland in the summer of 2018. This citywide art festival will bring together internationally and regionally recognized artists, curators, and scholars for a unique and engaging experience.

Chen Tamir has been named an International Curatorial Correspondent for the Triennial. Tamir, is Curator at the Center for Contemporary Art in Tel Aviv. She was listed by artnet news as one of 25 women curators on the rise and by Artslant as one of 15 curators to watch in 2015.

As one of 10 Curatorial Correspondents, Tamir will provide feedback and discussion from a global perspective, bringing social and political concerns from their respective regions to reflect on parallel situations in the United States and Cleveland.

Dani Gal is one 57 international artists invited to participate in the inaugural FRONT. Israeli born, Gal currently resides in Berlin, Germany. The core interest of his work is memory, recollection, recording, and the methodology of writing history. Fifty years after surviving Auschwitz, Bracha Weissman still suffers the aftermath of her old trauma. When she allows Ann Meshenberg, the child of other survivors, into her Beachwood home to take testimony for a videotaping project, Bracha considers the legacy she has left her own daughter. The Interview, which has played in more than three dozen theatres around the U.S., is a story about mothers, daughters and memory – about forgiving and being forgiven.

This reading, which features Dorothy Silver, is part of the National Jewish Theater Foundation’s 2018 Holocaust Theater International Initiative.

REMEMBERING & FORGETTING Cleveland Jewish Arts and Culture Lab Presented by The Mandel JCC

May 8 – July 8

Mandel Jewish Community Center 26001 South Woodland Road, Beachwood Now in its sixth year, the Jewish Arts & Culture Lab is an artist fellowship program for Jewishly identified Northeast Ohio artists. This year’s cohort is made up of 10 artists including painters, poets, performance artists, writers, photographers, sculptors and mixed media artists.

Together they are exploring the theme Remembering & Forgetting. Led by the program’s Jewish Educator, Alanna Cooper, the fellows dive into questions such as, “Where does memory come from?” “What do we remember and what do we forget?” “How do Jews remember their collective past?” The fellows then create original work(s) in response to the theme under the guidance of the Program Coordinator and Artistin-Residence, Lisa Yanofsky.

The exhibition opening program and reception will be held at 7pm on May 8th, 2018.
