can help to extend the service life of concrete structures when exposed to marine environments. The benefits of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), such as fly ash, natural pozzolans and slag, among others, are also described. Reinforcement corrosion protection in marine environments is addressed according to the European concrete standard EN 206:2013 and the Spanish regulation on structural concrete, EHE-08, where two methods for evaluating the service life of a concrete structure are set: deemed to satisfy rules and modelling by performance.

Finally, the paper gives some recommendations about the most appropriate cement types for marine environments and about concrete mix design.

Recycling the polypropylene sack production waste Russian packaging producer Kazanskiy Zavod Sovremennoy Upakovki (KZSU) ensures low-waste cement sack production by recycling and reusing the sack production waste. The company produces AD*STAR block bottom valve sacks which are made of coated woven polypropylene tape fabric. The polypropylene waste generated during production is recycled in a Starlinger recoSTAR universal recycling line and then reused in sack production. KZSU benefits from the reduced costs for raw material and waste treatment.

The energy-efficient design and high system availability of the recoSTAR recycling line additionally contributes to cost savings.

The bale opener in the cement industry The experience of using a bale opener by ReTec Miljø ApS (Denmark) for opening bales of packed wastederived fuel at the Cemex Latvia plant in Broceni, Latvia, is described. The fuel from opened bales is separated from the oversized fragments of packaging, and then used on the clinker burning line. The test results in conditions when the fuel bales froze and became as hard as rocks, demonstrated the reliability of the bale opener

Use of carbon dioxide as an accelerating additive in concrete Environmental concerns have prompted research into the use of captured carbon dioxide as a feedstock in the production of concrete. Industrial trials have examined the use of CO2 to produce ready-mix concrete. A gas injection system provided CO2 into a ready-mix truck during batching and mixing of a concrete with a binder containing 20% slag. The impacts of carbon dioxide dose, injection method and time of injection were examined. The slump and concrete temperature were measured. Compressive strength and resistivity were measured at ages from 24 hours to 91 days. Strength improvements up to 14% at 24 hours and 26% at 28 days were observed. The resistivity was not affected by the carbonation treatment. The strength benefit is attributable to the influence of carbon dioxide on the very early hydration of the cement. A combination of isothermal calorimetry and microstructural analysis suggests that nano-scale carbonation reaction products seed the hydration and contribute to the development of a stronger microstructure. The strength benefit suggests that carbonation is a possible tool to provide acceleration that could allow the greater use of supplementary cementitious materials in concrete mixtures. The use of waste carbon dioxide in the process offers a means to upcycle the CO2 as a beneficial additive to concrete.

The influence of particle-size distribution curve of sand on porosity and frost resistance of concrete The results of studies of porosity and frost resistance of concrete made with CEM I 32,5 R and CEM III/A 32,5 N cements are published. The sand content in the concrete and the proportion of grains up to 0.125 mm were varied.

The effect of particle-size distribution curve on porosity was established, particularly with varied content of the smallest particles of sand, the increase in which caused an increase in porosity, and in the case of concrete with CEM I cement - also in frost resistance. Differences in relative dynamic modulus of elasticity and the degree of damage to the concretes with CEM III cement, of different porosity, could not be found. This is probably due to the fact that their porosity was too low in principle..

Expansion of gypsum stone in the presence of a polycarboxylate hyper plasticizer

dosage of 0.35-0.70% by wt of gypsum leads to a linear expansion of the stone within 0.7-8% and its softening.

It was also established that this hyper plasticizer affects the shape and size of the crystals of calcium sulfate dihydrate formed from solutions supersaturated with CaSO4 · 2H2O. The reason for expansion of the hardening rock, apparently, is the internal pressure developing in the initially formed finely crystalline structure (crystallization pressure) during the subsequent slow recrystallization of gypsum

On the chemistry of thaumasite formation The expansion behavior of cement mortars with 0-25% limestone content is studied in water and magnesium sulfate solution for 2.5 years at room temperature and 7oC. The mortar with 25% limestone cured in sulfate solution at 7oC deteriorated after 6 months and the thaumasite salt separated from its surface. The other mortars expanded without cracking because of the ettringite formation.

In parallel series on pure systems, thaumasite could be prepared at room temperature. Infrared measurements on mixes composed of silica gel, calcite and ettringite indicated the formation of an intermediate phase that forms readily at room temperature and is detected by an infrared shoulder at 1012-27 cm-1. The thaumasite salt is expected to form in a further stage as a result of a combination of lime with the intermediate phase. The reaction depends on the solubility of lime which increases at low temperature and in presence of sucrose.

Mechanically activated cements with mineral additives based on raw materials of the Kola Peninsula The results of studies of binding properties of mechanically activated compositions based on Portland cement (PC) and mineral additives are presented. Magnesium-ferriferous slag from the Pechenganickel Combine of OAO Kola Mining & Metallurgical Co., iron ore concentrate and tailings from OAO Olkon, nepheline and titanium magnetite concentrates from AO Apatit, baddeleyite concentrate from AO Kovdorsky GOK were used as mineral additives.

The relationships between relative compressive strength of the compositions (PC + mineral additive) in medium and long terms of hardening and the content of mineral additive in them were found. The mechanism of the effect of additives on the strength of composite cements was described in comparison with additive-free PC.

Expansion of gypsum rock caused by Melflux 6681F, polycarboxylate hyper plasticizer of the latest generation, was investigated. It was established that the introduction of this additive into gypsum stone at a
