early 25 years ago, our JCDS founding families gave us all the gift of a timeless vision. They sought to create an academically excellent school in which different kinds of Jews were in close community with one another, Hebrew was the second language, and children were known and celebrated for precisely who they were. Just as our ancient sacred texts have profound modern resonance, so too do our founders’ vision and core values — forged into our school’s DNA — continue to animate our educational program and school community.

Now in my ninth and final year as Head of School, I am moved to reflect on the founding vision; it has been my privilege to enact, grow, and re-interpret it in partnership with our incredible education team. Day by day, season by season, we continue to build a truly bi-cultural school with a robust and pioneering Hebrew program. Indeed, we are a leading example of what Hebrew education can look like, both inside and outside the classroom (see Hebrew Comes Alive Through the Arts, p. 10). The groundbreaking work that our founding families did to create a pluralistic culture in 1995 was revolutionary at the time (see Tradition, Tradition! p. 6).

Our commitment to serving the whole child remains as strong as ever as we enact new programs focused on their social-emotional growth and development.

The tenets on which JCDS was built have been a guidepost for me, our faculty, our community, and most of all our students.

They enact the founders’ legacy as engaged, responsible, and thoughtful critical thinkers and changemakers who will make an impact over the next 25 years and beyond.

How long have you been at JCDS? This is my 17th year at JCDS. I started as a teaching intern in the Day School Leadership Through Teaching (DeLeT) program from Brandeis when I was mentored by Vered Singer and Kathy Parnes (z’’l). I started my teaching career in the lower grades, including seven years in Gan Nitzan (Kindergarten), then moved to the other end of the building and taught Middle School history for five more years. This is my third year as Director of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) Innovation. The “A” for the arts is important because we encourage integration across the curriculum.

How did you become interested in technology?

When I was ten years old, my family bought an Apple IIC and I learned to code using Logo. A few decades later, as a Gan Nitzan teacher, I had the opportunity to pilot a Lego robotics unit led by JCDS parent and Tufts professor Dr. Marina Umaschi Bers. I loved the idea that we could give students opportunities to use technology to be creative, to collaborate, and to tell stories.

When did you know you wanted to be an educator?

My love of working with children began when I was a counselor at Camp Miriam, which is part of the Habonim Dror Labor Zionist Youth Movement. The educational leadership experience I had at camp pointed me in this direction, and the DeLeT program at Brandeis led me to day school education.

What has been your favorite experience of STEAM in action at JCDS? Last year, with help from CJP and the Ruderman Foundation, we started an Inclusion Makeathon, inspired by the Israeli organization Tikkun Olam Makers. Our Middle School students met a Lesley University student who is visually impaired and identified a few everyday challenges that they wanted to help her overcome. This was grounded in the Jewish value that we want to make the world accessible to everyone. We connected inclusion awareness with engineering so that students would be engaged in meaningful problem-solving. JCDS students went through the engineering design process, developed blueprints and a prototype, and shared them with the Lesley student. She gave feedback, then they improved the design. This is the same design process they learn starting in Gan Nitzan. They are comfortable with this process and see themselves as problemsolvers in the world.

What is something your students might not know about you?

I’ve lived in Winnipeg, Toronto, Vancouver, Jerusalem, New York, and now Boston. I go back to Canada every summer to catch up on sushi, Slurpees, and Coffee Crisp chocolate bars.

What is the best part about STEAM at JCDS? The opportunity to connect students with meaningful realworld experiences is what excites me. We, as a school, have the opportunity and flexibility to be looking around at the latest innovations in education and think about how we can apply those in our unique context by giving the students a Jewish lens for their work.

Can you elaborate more on STEAM through a Jewish lens?

We aren’t teaching math, then Hebrew, then English; we’re teaching kids. What they learn is the total of every learning experience that we facilitate. I see everyone who works at JCDS as a Jewish educator, whatever they’re doing. Some of the teachers are teaching Jewish content, but we’re all teaching Jewish children how to make meaning of the world. We are teaching them how to see the world through a Jewish lens and ultimately to contribute to the world and develop their own strong Jewish identity.

He was a founding Board Member and Vice President of Development during Gann Academy’s first seven years, as well as Vice President of Finance. He was also a Board Member at Gateways and a Board Member of the Solomon Schechter Day School of Greater Boston. Robbie and his wife Rena’s oldest grandchild, Orly, is a 3rd grader at JCDS. Their m’chutenet (daughter's mother-in-law), Gail (Yaffa) Korinow (z’l) was a beloved first grade teacher at JCDS for many years.

Gary Elovitz is an engineering consultant with Energy Economics, Inc. in Newton; his practice includes HVAC, electrical, life safety, plumbing design, and forensic investigations for buildings. Gary and his wife, Dena Bach, have been involved with JCDS since 1997. Their four children are all proud graduates of JCDS.

JCDS at 25: First in a Series T R A D I T I ON , T R AD IT IO N !

O

ur beloved JCDS is almost 25 years old!

The anniversary year is about to begin.

I have been around the school a long while (this is our 11th year) and have such warm memories of what my family considers the old days: the bathtub in the Gan Nitzan classroom, reading the white board with my sons as they came into the classroom each morning, the first-day-of-school Shehecheyanu (sanctifying a moment in time) and all-school gathering (back when I wasn’t embarrassing to my kids!), Sunrise Shacharit, parent volunteers decorating the school for Matters of Taste, and so much more. The traditions of JCDS have been a touchstone for our family for more than a decade now. It is wonderful to see them continue and flourish, and to see new traditions begin to grow.

While in some ways I feel like a bit of an oldtimer at JCDS, I wanted to learn more about how this magical place started. I recently sat down with Arnee Winshall, the JCDS Founding Chair, a long-time trustee, and a nationally recognized visionary in Jewish Education, to get a glimpse of the school’s beginnings.

Arnee generously shared with me the process in which she and her co-creators engaged as they put the pieces in place. What she described sounded so heimishe (warm), so in the spirit of JCDS! A small group of families that would become the founding board held meeting after meeting with the goal of finding a way to provide their children with an innovative Jewish education that was vastly different from anything offered at the time.

Arnee, her husband Walt Winshall, and their founding board, Naomi Bar-Yam, Yaneer Bar-Yam, Rabbi Susan Harris, Mark Kramer, and Vardit Ringvald, dreamed of a school that put Hebrew learning at the center rather than treating Hebrew as one subject among many, was built around project-based learning (before project-based learning had a name),

integrated subjects in creative ways, fostered familiarity and connection with Israeli life and culture, and inculcated Jewish values as not just something you learn about in the classroom, but something that forms the very basis of a life well-lived. The founders envisioned a school that felt like a community and that made space for all kinds of learners to grow and thrive in their own way and at their own pace. They believed that a child is not a vessel to be filled, but rather a flame to be kindled.

Interestingly, the intentional pluralism that has become so much a part of our identity as a school was something they discovered in the early disucssions about the school. A moment came, in the midst of all this dreaming about a new vision for Jewish education, when they looked around the room and realized that as a founding group they represented a range of practice and tradition, and yet all of them were looking for the same things for their children: a framework that was strong enough to provide a great education and flexible enough to meet children where they were in order to help them grow. The realization that this goal was shared across denominations and practices only strengthened the vision, as it has strengthened the school in these past 25 years. That pluralism, like the educational vision that inspired it,

has deepened and grown over the two and a half decades since.

For a non-traditional school, JCDS has many beloved traditions. I think of tradition as a story that keeps telling itself: at once growing and remaining recognizable. Like the Yiddish production of Fiddler on the Roof, which is currently enchanting the New York theatre audience, JCDS has this wonderful timeless quality, coupled with originality and innovation. In fact, perhaps the most important tradition we have at JCDS is the tradition of innovation. As we read in our liturgy: Chadeish yameinu k’kedem (Renew our days, like before). Here’s to another 25 years of innovation, lifelong learning, and being in community!

I

am the proud product of the Jewish day school system. I attended a community day school in San Francisco from Kindergarten through 8th grade. I graduated from the DeLeT (Day School Leadership Through Teaching) program at Hebrew Union CollegeJewish Institute of Religion, and I worked as both a teacher and administrator at the same day school that I attended as a child. As a student, a DeLeT fellow, and an admissions professional, I had spent a large portion of my life inside Jewish day schools by the time I arrived at JCDS in April of 2016.

Still, nothing would prepare me for the feeling of belonging that washed over me when I stepped foot inside our school building. I was immediately welcomed into classrooms, invited to join the community for All School Kabbalat Shabbat, and taught Hebrew songs as students prepared for Pesach. I will never forget the recurring thought I had as I sat on the floor of the Sifriyah (Library) surrounded by the faces of the next generation of day school students: this is what a Jewish day school is meant to be.

Over the last three years, I have had that same thought more times than I can count.

A Jewish day school is meant to be inclusive, vibrant, welcoming, and spirited. It is meant to make each and every student feel known. It is meant to instill in children an enduring love of Jewish tradition, deep knowledge of Jewish text, and an understanding of our place within the rich history of the Jewish people. It is meant to nurture identity, encourage risk-taking, and support lifelong learning. It is

meant to be a second home, a spiritual community, and a place of belonging for students, faculty, staff, and families.

JCDS is that — and so much more. Nearly 25 years ago, our founders gave us all an enduring gift when they created the school that they wished for their children. We have the privilege and awesome responsibility of reinterpreting this timeless vision as our beloved school innovates, evolves, and grows.

I invite you to visit JCDS and experience for yourself what makes this place so unique.

W

ith deep gratitude to a generous anonymous donor along with the support of Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), private donors and parent contributions, JCDS is thrilled to now offer group transportation serving Brookline, Cambridge, and Somerville. Designed over many years in collaboration with our families, the project came to fruition and was launched this past September.

Buses are part of a three-year pilot program through CJP that aims to increase access to Jewish day school for families. The pilot program has provided relief for communities in need. As expected, the buses have lessened the burden of transportation for many parents. Families have shared that the buses are fostering community in meaningful ways. Parents from each bus route are virtually connected through an email and text group, and they regularly communicate with one another to coordinate bus drop-off and pick-up.

Students from all grades build meaningful connections with one another as they ride the bus side by side, and walk, drive, or scooter home from the bus stop each day. As one grateful parent shared, “the bus route is creating a support network... in our sub-community.”

JCDS is grateful for the generous financial support of CJP, the donor community, and the families who make the buses possible. The school looks forward to continuing to strengthen the group transportation program in order to make JCDS accessible for all families in the Greater Boston Jewish community.

S

ince its founding, a hallmark of JCDS has been its outstanding Hebrew program.

Students not only acquire Hebrew in specifically structured academic classes, they also experience the language and culture through the multifaceted arts program.

Creating space for self-expression and unique interpersonal communication, the arts blend emotional, rational, mental, and physical elements. When students are engaged in a thoughtful arts curriculum like ours, they develop confidence, find outlets for their individuality, and gain the opportunity for self-inquiry.

At JCDS, it is a remarkable gift to our students that visual arts, dance/movement, and most music classes are taught in Hebrew by native speakers. This blending provides children with a unique opportunity to experience and use Hebrew language while being simultaneously immersed in the universal language of the arts. Children’s cognitive awareness, literacy and language skills continually develop in two languages — all while they are focused on their creativity.

JCDS is a bi-cultural school with an authentic emphasis on Israeli culture. Language itself contains a whole cultural world. Words have magic; they come out of the heart as well as enter it. Conducted in a second language, the JCDS arts programs transport students to different times and different worlds. Sights, sounds, colors, light, movement, atmosphere,

and more are all experienced through the senses, and Israeli culture is absorbed holistically.

As Hebrew and Art teacher Vered Singer puts it, “Students feel comfortable and content in art class. Inhibitions are left outside the door, and inside, imaginations and creativity shine wildly.”

Students process information in a multitude of ways: auditorily, visually, kinesthetically, and semantically. While engaging in a variety of learning styles in art, music, and movement classes, their imagination and visual awareness are stimulated. Children learn to understand the work of other artists and articulate their own points of view. Through the arts and Hebrew, each coming alive through the other, our students have vast opportunities to develop self-expression, enhance multicultural awareness, take pride in their Jewish heritage, and recognize their role in the world at large.

Tali and Jeffery Goldstein were married in August.

After recieving a Bachelor of Arts in Health and Societies from the University of Pennsylvania, Tali went on to recieve her Master of Business Administration from the Yale School of Management. She now serves as Director of Coporate Strategy at Optum, a division of the UnitedHealth Group.

Abigail is a science journalist and associate editor for Psychology Today. After graduating from JCDS, Abigail attended Gann Academy, University of Rochester and NYU School of Journalism where she earned a Master’s Degree from the Science, Health and Environmental Reporting Program. She’s passionate about psychology, health, and medicine. She recently moved from Manhattan to Brooklyn and loves living in the New York City area. She returns often to visit friends and family in Newton.

CDS 8th graders enjoy many privileges that come with being the oldest students in the school. They walk weekly to Russo’s, the renowned neighborhood greengrocer, to purchase lunch, bring it back to school, and enjoy their repast together as a class in the Hadar Ohel (Lunch Room). They serve as ambassadors at the school’s annual benefit event, Matters of Taste, and a New York adventure in late spring caps their year. But what exactly are the oldest students doing for the school? How are they giving back to JCDS? Offering these adolescents a chance to think beyond themselves, the 8th Grade In-School Service Project calls on students to identify a need in the school that piques their interest. They then proceed to create a project to enhance, help, or elevate individuals or to improve classrooms or shared learning spaces. Throughout the year, they give a minimum of eighteen hours of their own in-school free time to execute their work and fulfill its mission and goals.

A wonderful by-product of the project package is the element of student reflection, one of our JCDS Habits of Mind and Heart. A log is kept at every turn, detailing the goals and the progress made on that particular day, the physical location of where the service transpired, and the amount of time given. Keeping this record elicits students to be mindful and to recognize the impact they are making each time they carry out their work.

Each project is carefully planned. The 8th graders percolate and refine their ideas with an adult in the building who is in some way connected to it. For example, a student with a proclivity for art determined she would delight in enhancing the science lab by painting a floor to ceiling mural across one of its four walls. She and the science teacher contemplated the artwork, and a mentor/mentee partnership was formed.

Another student, passionate about both computer programming and working with younger children, joined forces with our engineering expert on developing and executing SCRATCH programs with Lower School students.

An 8th grade bibliophile built a charming, contained library within our Sifryah (Library), working with a number of teachers on her enterprise.

These projects develop life-skills on multiple levels.

Students tune into needs around them, form partnerships, plan and execute ideas that benefit others, and they see the impact of their work on their school community. From a hands-on position helping Facilities Assistant Nick Sutherland with maintenance, to encouraging first and second graders to read, to acting as a student liaison in the Admissions Office speaking with prospective families, our 8th grade class is now asking what they can do for their school, all the while appreciating what their school can do for them!

Extrasensory perception. These and other superpowers are portrayed in our popular culture through comic books, novels, and films.

What if I told you that superpowers exist not only in the realm of science fiction and fantasy?

What if I told you that superpowers exist right here at JCDS? That’s right. JCDS has a superpower. And that is the power of connection.

In his book, The Childhood Roots of Adult Happiness, Dr. Ned Hallowell says that one of the keys to adult happiness is the sense of “connection” in childhood. Indeed, at JCDS, our children are connected within their school community.

Watching my son, Isaac, now in the second grade, I observe how JCDS staff and faculty carefully and mindfully build this sense of connection. Literature circles, Tefillah buddies, dance troupe, the Hebrew-English musical, cooking club, and engineering club are all ways in which Isaac and his peers connect with teachers, their grades, and with members of the wider school community.

Last spring, my husband, Darren, and I were proud to see our older son, Leo, graduate from JCDS as a member of the class of 2019. Graduation is a phenomenal example of how JCDS students and their teachers forge a personal connection. Each student is known and respected as an individual within the JCDS community.

At graduation, each student is the recipient of a personalized tribute by a member of the faculty with whom the student has a strong connection.

Whether in rhyming couplets, song, artwork, or speech, the tribute captures the graduating student’s essence. As well as we know our own children, there is something incredibly special hearing the perspective of a trusted teacher. For the graduates, it is empowering and validating.

The sense of connection between student and school is clear.

Whether parents of current students, parents of alumni, grandparents, or community friends, trustees are passionate advocates for JCDS, its mission, and its vision. We take seriously our responsibility to ensure that the school remains in good financial stead. We recognize the broader communal challenges that we, and many day schools across the region and country, face. We work to continuously adapt to a dynamic environment.

We all feel deeply connected to our inspiring Head of School, Dr. Susie Tanchel. The current school year is bittersweet as we prepare for a leadership transition. The close working relationship and personal connection that I have with Susie mean so much to me. Her profound and contagious sense of commitment is inspiring to everyone who works with her. It is with appreciation that we reflect upon Dr. T.’s many contributions to JCDS during her nine-year tenure: her leadership, her devotion to faculty professional development, her charismatic presence, and her expertise in teaching and learning.

Susie will continue to impact our school community, as well as our Board of Trustees, for years to come.

t is my pleasure to introduce our 2019 Annual Report. The images and stories throughout Nitzotzot (Sparks) reflect a year of progress for JCDS. Generous donors and dedicated volunteers came forward to say yes to pluralistic community, joyful Judaism, excellent teaching, coding as the new Jewish literacy, multi-faceted Hebrew language learning, bi-cultural arts programs, robust athletics, after-school enrichment, and so much more.

On behalf of all who benefit, I am immensely grateful for the open-hearted philanthropy that makes possible everything JCDS does. Thank you to the anonymous donor who funded a new bus program to bring children to school (see story on p. 9) and thank you to the community members who donated so generously. Thank you to the Va’ad Parent Association and alumni families for the improved playground. Thank you to the foundations and partner organizations that endorse our vital mission. Lastly, thank you to each and every parent who helped us achieve a 94% participation rate in the Parent Campaign.

As our community well knows, Dr. Susie Tanchel, Head of School, is a visionary leader and a spark of joy in the field of Jewish education. Looking ahead, I am excited about the school’s 25th anniversary. What a phenomenal milestone. Everyone at JCDS looks forward to marking this milestone in 2020 and beyond.

W

hen Tamara Charm and Oren Weisberg thought about their daughters’ education, they wanted them to have deep exposure to the texts, traditions, and culture of Judaism.

As they explored day schools, they realized that a pluralistic approach was important to them as well. Learning the value of multiple perspectives, which begins in Gan Nitzan (Kindergarten), helps Ma’ayan (’25), Gavriella (’27), and Eliana (’28) appreciate different approaches to religion, school, and life in general.

Tamara is a strategy consultant at McKinsey & Company and Oren is a pediatric ophthalmologist. Neither grew up in Boston, but they have found warmth and a deep sense of connection in the Cambridge-Somerville (Camberville) Jewish community. The family actively participates in Minyan Tehillah and Harvard Hillel. They appreciate living in an area where their friends practice Judaism in diverse ways.

“We are happy our kids are in a school that supports this philosophy. As all JCDS children get older, they can help lead the Jewish community with a foundation of respect and acceptance,” said Oren.

The Charm Weisbergs were drawn to the way JCDS students treat each other. “On Ma’ayan’s first day of Gan Nitzan, two eighth grade boys greeted her warmly. We were impressed by the way older students look out for younger kids,” Tamara said. Before Eliana even started Gan Nitzan, she had built friendships with older students through pick-ups and the year-end Shabbaton (family retreat). Gavriella has classmates across Camberville. “Through our children, we have a better view of our local community,” Tamara said.

“It is fun to see our kids forge new relationships and then help us strengthen connections with their friends’ parents.”

“Although family and community occupy much of our time, we enjoy spending time outdoors.

Favorite activities include biking and kayaking,” Tamara said. “We have family spread across the United States and Israel. The girls love traveling to visit their cousins — especially if the destination has a nice playground,” Oren added.

When asked why they love JCDS, the girls responded in a variety of ways. Kindergartner Eliana loves physical education with Laura Ball, who she says is “so fun and funny.” First grader Gavriella loves learning Hebrew and art with Vered Singer because "she is very creative and we make fun stuff.” Third grader Ma’ayan loves learning science with Kait Birghenthal because "Kait shows us cool things and I love to learn about science.”
