From the Head of School

In 1995, JCDS opened its doors to our first 11 students.

In 2013, 18 years later, we celebrated our school’s Chai anniversary. This milestone provided us with a rich opportunity to rejoice in our accomplishments and to assess the areas that we need to strengthen further. In taking stock of our school, I am so proud that we continue to exemplify the same core values upon which JCDS was founded. What better way to honor our visionary founders than by deepening our commitment to our sacred mission by re-visioning new ways to fulfill it?

In our ongoing quest to improve the learning experience for students and teachers alike, we created new teacher leader positions, as well as a new Jewish Life Team in the last year. Our teacher leader positions in both the Lower and Middle Schools enable our faculty to take on new professional capabilities, cultivate our community of practice, and learn from each other. Investing in our teachers’ growth and development in this way is critical to the success of our academic program.

Continuing to find new ways to engage with our intentional pluralism, an essential hallmark of JCDS, is critical to the lifeblood of our school. It was in this spirit that we created a new Jewish Life Team. This team made a dramatic impact on the feeling of ru’ach (spirit) in our school, adding fresh joy and heart to our celebrations of Jewish and American holidays, as well as almost every school-wide assembly. The presence of these talented Jewish educators, who each offer our children a different way of leading a Jewishly engaged life, beautifully enacts our pluralistic mission. The next steps on our journey are to start conversations with our parent body about what it means to raise our children in a pluralistic community, and for the school itself to be more explicit about what a pluralism of engagement means for our students at each developmental stage.

While we continue to strengthen our academic program, we also need to stay focused on our long-term sustainability. I am very excited that during the past year,

JCDS was accepted into a national program sponsored

by Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE), and the Avi Chai Foundation to build our Endowment Fund. Success with our Endowment Campaign will ensure that JCDS will be here for many more birthday celebrations as we continue to educate children for decades to come.

During most Friday mornings in our 18th year, from every point in our building, you could hear our school community enthusiastically singing the song, “JCDS Chai.”

The energy, passion, and excitement evident in that and in so many other moments during our school day will fuel us for at least our next 18 years. What a great time it is to be a part of the JCDS community. Our founders imparted an incredible vision to us that we continue to live each day. May our school and community go from strength to strength.

The funds raised by this campaign are vital to supporting our school’s substantial commitment to its financial aid program, as well as giving our teachers and programs the backing they need to thrive. Generations Endowment Program

Our 18th year was one of celebration, reflection, and growth. Current families, alumni, and community members celebrated our special Chai year in many ways, including several inspiring text studies led by our Head of School, and various school-wide events that honored our wonderful, pluralistic Jewish community. While the year as a whole had a celebratory feeling, we also faced important challenges, including an unprecedented number of applicants for kindergarten, which created significant challenges to the available space in our building. We emerged from the year with new solutions in hand, as well as a plan for the future in terms of the teaching model for our youngest students and what our school needs to flourish and grow.

Annual Campaign We are pleased to report that last year, 94% of our parent body participated

Last January, JCDS was one of six local Jewish day schools selected to participate in an Endowment program, Generations, run by Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP), Partnership for Excellence in Jewish Education (PEJE), and the Avi Chai Foundation. The goal of this program is to raise funds through Endowment gifts to JCDS. These important funds will provide a steady, reliable stream of income for JCDS. We believe that building our Endowment will help ensure economic diversity in our school, provide opportunities and salary support for our exemplary professionals, and allow us to maintain and improve our facilities. There are few other investments that can produce returns as meaningful as an Endowment gift, and I urge you to consider this gesture to JCDS. Affordability and the Tuition Working Group We continue to hear from parents and community members about the challenges many face in paying tuition.

Economic diversity has always been

a hallmark of JCDS, and we remain extremely committed to offering assistance to as many families as possible. Last year, we reached out to numerous foundations and national educators to seek their input and clarity on what other schools are experiencing.

This spring, I formed a tuition-working group, led by our Board Treasurer and comprised of board members and JCDS operational staff, to examine all aspects of tuition and pricing for the school.

The board is deeply invested in finding solutions to this important challenge.

Strategic Planning Process In 2009, the Board of Trustees developed a long-range plan with a number of ambitious goals for the school’s enrollment, fundraising, tuition, and facilities. This year, we will begin the process of formulating a new strategic plan for the school, focusing on the next five to seven years. We expect to focus on several areas, including our tuition and the cost of education, our space requirements, the concept of religious and educational pluralism, and Jewish life at JCDS. JCDS is a pioneer in Jewish learning, pluralism, academic innovation, and excellence. We are excited to end the year on such good financial standing, and look forward to many more successful years to come.

Joyful Jewish Community JCDS is a Joyful Jewish Community ‫ קהילה‬that learns and celebrates together in rich, colorful, and meaningful ways. The creative community spirit and school mission go well beyond the walls of JCDS, for events like life cycle celebrations, Shabbat meals, and weekend soccer games.

Academic Excellence JCDS’ course of study is rigorous and intentional, yet flexible and personalized. Academic Excellence ‫ לימודים‬is built on strong skills, citizenship, and Jewish literacy set in a nurturing and relaxed atmosphere.

Highlights from 2012-2013 The innovative and unique programming that took place at JCDS this past year was remarkable.

Sounds of children learning flooded the hallways all year long: students asking each other questions, reading verses of Torah, and singing favorite Hebrew songs. Highlighted here are five programs from the 2012-2013 academic year that most exemplified each of our core values.

Intentional Pluralism The New Jewish Life Team

Yonah Berman served as a part-time Rabbinic presence at JCDS and provided knowledge and guidance with a particular focus in the Middle School, where he taught a Toshba (Rabbinic Literature) class and led a weekly Mechitza Minyan.

Each member of the team brought our chaggim, t’fillot, texts, and everyday Jewish life to our students in exciting and creative ways, modeling the intentionally pluralistic community that is JCDS.

Whole Child Approach A Production of Twelfth Night

Hebrew and English Throughout the Day “I have gained understanding from all my teachers…” (Psalms 119:99)

“Act well your part; there all the honor lies.” –Alexander Pope Last April, the 6th grade students put on a production of Twelfth Night by William Shakespeare. The play, which was produced by JCDS Humanities teacher, Michelle Boyle, offered the opportunity for students to choose the aspect of production in which they were most interested, and grow to be the best version of themselves.

The students embraced all parts of theater, from acting and narrating, to lights, costumes, set development, and working behind the scenes. One

Boston-Haifa Connection

The JCDS community was enriched last year with a fantastic and energetic Jewish Life Team. Oren Kaunfer, Rabbi Tiferet Gordon, and Rabbi Yonah Berman provided students with multiple voices and role models who embody our commitment to pluralism and meaningful Jewish experiences.

Tiferet Gordon, who was then a Rabbinical Fellow, provided a strong half-time presence particularly dedicated to t’fillah and other aspects of Jewish life in the Lower School. She also taught a 7th grade Tanakh (biblical) class.

Oren Kaunfer, in the new role of Madrich Ruchani (Spiritual Educator), brought his diverse experience as an experiential educator, a camp counselor, and a wellrecognized musician, to coordinating our school-wide celebration of chaggim

‫ארועים בולטים משנת תשע”ג‬ With the dual purpose of language proficiency and making personal connections, the two student communities sent each other handwritten cards introducing themselves in their non-native language.

To facilitate further the authentic communication between JCDS and the HaBonim School, students had several opportunities to video-conference with each other during class time. They asked each other questions, shared facts about themselves, and sang a song together.

With the help of the Internet and a strong Hebrew foundation, geographic distance melted away, and JCDS students were able to find meaningful and real connections with their peers in Israel.

Joyful Jewish Community Celebrating our Chai Year

institution reflecting the spectrum of the Jewish community. As we reflect on our last 18 years and celebrate all that we have accomplished, we are proud of how our core values continue to inform our practices, guide our decision making, and help us enact our sacred mission.

In the true style of our joyful Jewish community, we celebrated our Chai anniversary all year long. We hung a celebratory banner on the building, hosted a reunion for those involved in the community during the first ten years, recreated the Hot Lunch Bunch when several mothers and grandmothers came in to prepare lunch for the students, heard from our founders and former leaders, and sang the cheer “JCDS Chai” in the hallways of our school. The year concluded with a large community event when families and friends, new and old, came together to celebrate where we have been and our bright future.

Academic Excellence Middle School Election Unit

“If you will it, it is no dream” -Theodore Herzl 18 years ago, a group of visionary leaders sat together and dreamed the idea of a school that would have an outstanding academic program, serve the whole child, intersperse Hebrew and English throughout the day, and would be groundbreaking as a pluralistic

vote on important political issues, JCDS students held a mock election parallel to the presidential election. The mock election assembly was an integration of democracy and pluralism, when students and staff came together to share and celebrate what they had learned about elections and voting in America. Each class presented one of a variety of topics, ranging from polling to the Electoral College (adapted to JCDS).

The election unit was rigorous and intentional, yet flexible and personalized. Middle School Social Science teacher Jared Matas developed lessons and assignments that helped students develop their critical thinking skills by using a variety of resources.

In the weeks leading up to the mock election, JCDS Middle School students reviewed and analyzed campaign advertisements, followed online prediction maps, crafted state-specific political strategies, and learned from special guests speakers including Law Professor Jed Shugerman and State Senator Will Brownsberger. Using the computer programming language, Scratch, to program sensor boards, the students designed and built electronic vote counting machines, which were used during the assembly to tally votes.

The older students assisted the younger ones, and the vote counting machines worked without a hitch.

The unit helped prepare students to be active and informed participants who understand our country’s freedom and individual rights to vote.

School Finances 2012-2013 STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION The financial strength of the school has once again improved over the prior year.

Enrollment growth continues to be strong as the JCDS enrollment grew from 200 to 205. We are proud of this accomplishment given the recent national economic challenges. The Krupp Challenge helped reduce our mortgage payments this year, and will for several more years.

Cash flow from the Krupp pledge payments allowed repayment towards our principal mortgage of an additional $350,000 during the year. Debt service, as a percentage of total expenditures, has declined from 16.2% for 2011-2012 to 9.0% for 2012-2013, a truly stellar achievement.

The JCDS Statement of Financial Positions also shows positive improvements. Cash on hand has increased by more than $350,000. This additional cash will provide a safety net to fund needed emergency repairs to the building or equipment without impacting the educational program. The mortgage principal has also declined by $547,541.

During the year, JCDS moved its small endowment from a money market account to the Jewish Community Endowment Pool (JCEP) run by Combined Jewish Philanthropies (CJP). The returns on this investment are significantly higher than our former money market account.

All future donations to endowment will be placed in this investment pool. The school has also joined the Generations Program, which is focused on helping JCDS grow its Endowment fund.

Great Donors & Volunteers Make This Work Possible Matters of Taste JCDS held its annual signature fundraising event, Matters of Taste, on Sunday, March 17, 2013. This memorable evening provided essential support to the JCDS Annual Fund, which enables JCDS to continue to maximize support to families attending our school, to provide our outstanding academic program, to create an intentionally pluralistic environment, and to foster a joyful Jewish community. This event reflects our school’s pluralism in the range of topics discussed by our diverse group of special guests, in the variety of culinary delights served, and in the gracious host families who open their homes to individuals choosing to “nourish their bodies and enrich their minds.”

Made Possible by You JCDS is pleased to have donors that care enough to give generously to an array of curricular areas. Last year, one significant gift allowed our faculty to dedicate time to collaborate with one another and strengthen their practice. To help grow each person’s skills as a productive team member, we were fortunate to have a national expert in Teacher Teams working with our faculty. Another gift enabled our Middle School students to visit the Museum of Science for the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit. Students were fully engaged as they tried to read the Hebrew text with one another and figure out the pieces they recognized. Both our faculty and students benefited from their engaged learning.

We are grateful for our many dedicated volunteers who provide invaluable service and make our fundraising activities and events so successful. This past year, the Parent Campaign was successful in achieving 94% participation. We also greatly appreciate all those who help with our athletics and afterschool programs. We could not hold Matters of Taste or Grandparents’/Special Friends’ Day without the Chairs and volunteer teams who help make these events enjoyable. Our children benefit greatly from the many wonderful volunteers who give of their time, passion, and energy to help JCDS.
