I

n true JCDS fashion, this past school year was an exciting combination of reflection, exploration, and innovation. Learning about and adapting new educational principles, as well as enacting our core values in new ways, made for a generative and growth-filled year.

A principle, which took JCDS by storm, was Dr. Carol Dweck’s work on growth mindset, the idea that a person’s abilities can be developed through different strategies, effort and perseverance. The faculty worked on further developing their own growth mindsets while focusing on cultivating the conditions for students to recognize their own growth possibilities, and the impact of effort and strategic thinking. Conversations in our school became more focused on celebrating the mistakes from which we learned the most, or understanding that if someone hadn’t learned something yet, s/he still could with continued effort.

As we explored new key commitments, JCDS embarked on a multi-year initiative, generously funded by a grant from the Legacy Heritage Fund, to explore and develop our school’s core value of intentional pluralism of engagement. With an energized taskforce comprised of teachers and administrators, we explored how to be more explicit about our pedagogies of pluralism, defined the skills and capacities necessary to be pluralistic, and determined the common places around which we engage in explicit conversations. It is so powerful to hear members of our faculty sharing case studies about how pluralism is enacted in their classrooms and to learn from the successes and the struggles. In addition, we have convened a parent pluralism group to explore both the worthy challenges and great potential that pluralism may afford our wider community.

JCDS

One important educational innovation is our new K-2 engineering curriculum. The engineering design cycle — experimentation, feedback, revision — models a process that our students apply across disciplines, builds math and science skills and fosters a problem-solving mindset. Based on the success of this program, we plan on expanding it in the coming year.

An intense process of reflection for JCDS was the 10-year re-accreditation process conducted by the Association for Independent Schools of New England (AISNE). This effort offered us a rich opportunity to work on the scope and sequence of all content that we teach and our educational program as a whole, as well as to review our financial and governance practices. Following a three-day onsite review from the AISNE visiting team, I was particularly gratified that they noted the extent to which our faculty and staff enact our mission each day.

This work, and all we accomplish here, is possible only because of your generous financial support of JCDS. Your ongoing partnership and commitment to JCDS means that we continue to grow and improve as we provide our children with an outstanding and inspiring education. It is this which provides them with the foundation to build lives of engagement, meaning and service.

Thank you all for your generous gifts of time, financial resources and energy in 2014-2015. We appreciate the dedicated support from our parents, staff and community members on behalf of our vibrant and energetic school this past year.

JCDS Annual Campaign Our Annual Campaign for JCDS relies upon the loyal and generous support of parents, teachers and staff, community members, alumni, and grandparents. Thank you so much for your generosity and devotion to JCDS. Your support allows us to provide financial aid to many families, to strengthen our academic programs, to support our gifted and dedicated teachers, and to allow us to make improvements to our building and classrooms so our children can learn in the best possible environment. We are very happy to report that last year, 97% of our parents participated in the Annual Campaign effort. Special thanks again to our many parent campaign chairs, and our Annual Campaign volunteers, including parents, faculty, staff, and board members. It was truly a community effort.

Finances and Affordability The JCDS Board of Trustees remains deeply committed to finding the best solutions to tuition affordability and cost reduction. Ensuring socioeconomic diversity is a key value of our school. In fact, nearly 50% of JCDS students receive some form of financial aid. I appreciate the efforts of our Treasurer, Nathan Hayman, and his Finance Committee, to continue to offer prudent and thoughtful solutions to many of the financial concerns, especially around tuition and affordability.

Strategic Plan For the past two years, JCDS Board member Stephanie Listokin led a new Strategic Planning committee for the school. This work builds upon a strategic plan that was presented to the JCDS community in 2009. Stephanie’s work involved numerous thoughtful conversations and hard work with faculty, staff, parents, community members, and school leadership to create a new vision for the school for 2015-2018. I was pleased that our school leaders took the time to reflect and consider where JCDS should be in the next three years in several key areas, including continued and improved educational excellence, community engagement and financial position. A full report of this exciting and visionary report will be sent to the community in the fall of 2015. I encourage you to read it through, ask questions, and consider how you can support JCDS in implementing its strategic vision for 2015-2018.

HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014-2015

Sounds of children learning flooded the hallways all year long: students asking each other questions, reading verses of Torah, and singing favorite Hebrew songs. Highlighted here are five programs from the 2014-2015 academic year that most exemplify each of our core values.

Student-Led Conferences

Elephant & Piggie Translations At JCDS, intentional pluralism extends outside the boundaries of Judaism to encompass engaging with difference in all facets of life in productive and meaningful ways. Our 7th and 8th graders had the opportunity to translate from English to Hebrew parts of the “Elephant & Piggie” children’s book series, a Gan Nitzan favorite. Students began by reading other translated books in order to familiarize themselves with how words are adapted in translation.

They compared and analyzed originals and translations to practice identifying the subtle word changes that occur. Students were then faced with the challenge of translating not only the language, but also the cultural components that cannot be literally translated from one language to another. They had to use context clues to determine what would be the best translation in context of the story. In order to test out their translations, the older students read their books to the Gan Nitzaners. Students learned that language differences extend farther than just word changes; language is the verbal expression of culture and it must be recognized and discussed in order to comprehend fully the new language.

W H OLE C H I L D

Educational research shows that students’ own awareness of themselves as learners and their ability to facilitate a discussion around their own learning needs are essential skills for 21st century leaders. In an effort to develop these critical skills, JCDS piloted student-led conferences in 6th grade humanities where students presented a portfolio of work to their parents. Students discussed the process of arriving at what they identified as their best work, shared ideas for how they would improve other pieces of work in their portfolio, elaborated on both their academic and social-emotional goals and the strategies they would use to achieve these goals. Parents had the opportunity to ask their children questions about their work and discuss how they, as parents, can best support their children to achieve their goals. We received positive feedback from both parents and students. One parent noted, “Our son was so proud [of himself ].” A student wrote, “Thanks for helping me lead my conference.

My mom can’t stop talking about it. She says she’s really proud of me.”

JCDS Shabbaton

This past June, amidst perfect weather, much of the JCDS community, including over three hundred and thirty parents, children, teachers and grandparents joined together for a joyful Shabbaton at Camp Yavneh in New Hampshire.

It was an phenomenal turnout. Ruach filled the air as Oren Kaunfer, madrich ruchani, played the guitar and dozens of people led t’fillah and a huge range of activities. Most popular, perhaps, was swimming at the lake and the evercompetitive men’s softball game. As always, the Shabbaton provided the entire community an opportunity to celebrate, reflect, and grow together. It is particularly wonderful to see so many kids buzzing around independently surrounded by a community of friends and those who cherish them.

K-2 Engineering

JCDS piloted an innovative new K-2 engineering curriculum this past year. With an emphasis on hands-on building, students learned about the Engineering Design Process and to “think like engineers” by identifying real world problems and then designing solutions to those problems. Over the course of the year, students designed a wide variety of projects, often tied in to the Jewish calendar. Highlights included Rosh Hashanah Apple and Honey dippers and Omer Counters. This coming year, we will be building upon the pilot program and seek opportunities to expand engineering into additional grades. Additionally, we will be incorporating from the Boston Museum of Science’s “Engineering is Elementary” curriculum.

Boston Tours in Hebrew

At JCDS, our students are given unique opportunities to learn and practice Hebrew in real life situations. This past April, our 4th graders led tours for one another of Boston entirely in Hebrew.

Students were divided into groups and were tasked with the responsibility to research their location so that when the class visited Boston, they could be the tour guides. The goal of this trip was for students to use their Hebrew authentically to present their research on a specific location in Boston. Students only spoke Hebrew for the entire trip, even while chatting amongst themselves on the bus ride. In preparation for the trip, students studied relevant vocabulary and practiced in semi-real life situations, by giving tours of the school, or by writing dialogues and acting them out.

Students presented facts about various locations, such as the Science Museum, Fenway Park, and Faneuil Hall. They also had to provide directions on how to travel to their location, whether by bus, subway, or on foot. Many parents commented that these students now have the tools necessary to navigate Israel because of the skills they acquired during this course of study.

SCHOOL FINANCES 2014 - 2015

The financial picture of JCDS remains strong and this past fiscal year ended with a surplus due to the generosity of our donors and parent partners. The Board and the Finance Committee worked closely with the Head of School to provide the stewardship required to balance the needs of the academic program while maintaining proper financial management. The school’s effective budget development is based on the alignment of resources that enhance and improve its academic program.

JCDS continues to benefit from restricted gifts, especially in the areas of technology and STEM. These gifts have assisted in the expansion of technology usage in the classroom. Through the assistance of generous donors, the Lower School acquired 40 iPads, allowing all students access to the benefits of these devices. In addition to expanding our STEM curriculum, these gifts fund professional development and allow JCDS to remain cutting edge.

The JCDS debt service continues to decline as a percentage of overall budget. Most of this decline is due to the reduction in outstanding principal. During Fiscal Year 2015, substantial debt reduction was due to an additional payment of $230,000.

In summary, JCDS’ improved financial strength and cash reserves will allow the school to maintain a vibrant academic program, invest in the faculty’s professional growth and complete the necessary repairs and improvements to the building.

MATTERS OF TASTE 2015

JCDS

For sixteen years Matters of Taste has been JCDS’ signature event, crafted by a powerhouse team of volunteers and chaired in 2015 by longtime members of the JCDS community, the Gildesgame family. The event attracted 250 participants who were graciously hosted at eighteen homes across the greater Boston area. Each dinner featured a special guest, some of whom included: • Hankus Netsky, Composer and Ethnomusicologist • Orna Berry, Former Chief Scientist of Israel • Jamil Mahuad, Former President of Ecuador • Janet Echelman, Sculptor Matters of Taste generates essential support for the JCDS Annual Fund, which allows JCDS to maximize financial support for families, support the academic experience and establish a joyful and vibrant environment in which students, teachers, and parents come together to learn and grow. Our deepest gratitude goes to our volunteers, host families and special guests for making this intellectually stimulating and vibrant event possible.

Intentional Pluralism As we continually strive to foster this vibrant, pluralistic learning community, we are privileged to have the support of a grant from the Legacy Heritage Fund that allows us to explore and develop our core value of pluralism of engagement. With an energized taskforce comprised of teachers and administrators, we explore how to be more explicit about our pedagogies of pluralism, define the skills and capacities necessary to be pluralistic, and determine the common areas around which we engage with diversity in our community.

Professional Development Professional developement is core to creating a community of teaching practice. Throughout the school year, weekly professional development meetings, grade meetings, and individual coaching sessions focus on teacher growth and development. Faculty members are given the opportunity to create individual professional development plans and annual goals that provide them with targeted learning opportunities in and out of school. Our faculty members participate in numerous conferences, retreats, trips and other opportunities that help them grow and support their curriculum.

New Middle School Student Chromebooks A generous and forward-thinking donor provided the funds to purchase 50 new Chromebooks that are used by our Middle School students. Much of their work is done through Google Docs, and these Chromebooks allow them to access their work anywhere, providing a flexible school environment in which our students learn and collaborate.
