Owner and former Chief Operating Optimist, Life is Good

Roy Heffernan is an owner and the former Chief Operating Optimist (COO) for Life is Good, an apparel and accessories retailer and lifestyle brand. The mission of Life is Good is to spread the power of optimism. The founding brothers Bert and John Jacobs learned that their company was much more than t-shirts. Together with Roy, they helped found The Life is Good Kids Foundation, which is committed to helping children who face challenges, including the traumas of violence, poverty, and illness. The foundation is funded through 10% of the company’s net profits with public donations at Life is Good Festivals held across the country. Roy will discuss the importance of this integrated model of a successful for-profit company with a philanthropy that the entire company supports.

HILLEL LEVINE

Professor of Sociology and Religion, Boston University

For more than 25 years, Professor Hillel Levine has been devoted to education at Harvard, Yale, and now as Professor of Sociology and Religion at Boston University. Professor Levine has written five books and many articles on ethnic violence, normative conflict, and how they may be resolved. His research provided the basis for an Oscar-winning documentary and he is a popular lecturer, guest columnist in newspapers, and makes frequent radio and television appearances. He is also the President of the International Institute for Mediation and Historical Conciliation, an NGO organized to prevent and resolve violent conflicts that are made all the more volatile by disputed histories and memories of past injuries.

GEORGIA LUIKENS, PH.D. Musicologist, Educator, Violinist

A scholar concentrating on the life and works of Leonard Bernstein, Georgia Luikens will bring to life the incredible music of the great maestro who would have turned 100 this year. Join Georgia as she delves into the music behind the man, and the man behind the music.

An Australian-born musicologist, educator, and violinist, Georgia received her Ph.D. in Musicology from Brandeis University, where she held the Harry and Mildred Remis Endowed Fellowship for the Creative Arts and received a number of teaching awards, including the University Prize Instructorship. She plays violin with the Brookline Symphony Orchestra and sings with the Jameson Singers.

RABBA DINA BRAWER Britain’s first female Orthodox Rabbi

Dina Brawer was born and raised in Milan and studied in Jerusalem, New York, and London. An active Rebbetzin for over a decade in North London, she recently received her Orthodox ordination at Yeshivat Maharat in New York. Having relocated to Boston, Rabba Dina lectures, writes, and broadcasts to wide and diverse audiences.

What drives a Rebbetzin to become a Rabbi? How has Dina’s move been received by the wider Jewish community? What are the implications for Rabbis, Rebbetzins, and congregations as more women train for the Orthodox clergy? Find out during this revealing session.

Nir Caspi is the Co-Founder of Cafe Landwer, an Israeli chain of gourmet cafes. Established in 2004, there are over 65 locations across Israel, grossing $90 million in annual revenues with 300 employees.

With a vision to expand across North America, Nir opened a cafe in Toronto in 2017 and currently has two locations in Boston. A former Israeli Navy SEAL, Nir planned and led over ten special operations during his military service. Learn how Nir transformed an old German coffee brand into an entrepreneurial success story.

Henry and Lois Foster Director and Chief Curator, Rose Art Museum, Brandeis University

Come join Luis Croquer as he discusses ways that modern and contemporary artists have engaged in activism and given a voice to social causes. His talk will begin with a broad historical look at the 20th century that will include music, film, and fine art, continuing all the way to the present. Luis sees artists as change-makers and the Rose Art Museum as a premier collection of 20th and 21st century art, which together demonstrate how art is an out-of-the box approach to challenging established social structures.

KEREN McGINITY, PH.D. Director of Interfaith Families Jewish Engagement, Hebrew College

Dr. Keren McGinity is a 2018 Forward 50 honoree for her clarion call: “There needs to be a Jewish response to the #MeToo movement” (New York Jewish Week). She is the inaugural Director of the Interfaith Families Jewish Engagement Program at Hebrew College and an honorary research associate at the Hadassah-Brandeis Institute. Keren serves on the Sexual Misconduct Taskforce of the Association for Jewish Studies and the Academic Advisory Council of the Jewish Women’s Archive. She welcomes all genders to learn about her journey from scholar to activist, and how we all must be upstanders moving forward.

HANNAH PICKARD

Program Manager, National Network for Ocean and Climate Change Interpretation, New England Aquarium

Climate change is one of the most important issues of our time.

Yet nearly two-thirds of Americans talk about climate change only occasionally or not at all. What can we do? Join Hannah Pickard to learn how the New England Aquarium is changing the conversation about climate change. The Aquarium is one of the premier visitor attractions in Boston and a catalyst for global change through public engagement, commitment to conservation, leadership in education, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy. Hannah has a background in education program development, implementation and evaluation for families, schools, and community groups.

BETH STEVENS, PH.D. Associate Professor, FM Kirby Neurobiology Research Center at Boston Children’s Hospital

Dr. Beth Stevens is an Associate Professor at Harvard Medical School in the FM Kirby Neurobiology Center at Boston Children’s Hospital, an Institute Member of the Broad Institute and Stanley Center for Neuropsychiatric Research, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. She was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2015. Her research is focused on understanding how neural-immune interactions in the brain sculpt synapses during normal development and disease. Dr. Stevens’s research is providing novel insight into the cognitive dysfunction in neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s, that could lead to new therapies and biomarkers.
