In a vibrant Jewish environment, our students practice intentional pluralism, empathy, and critical thinking. They unlock their true potential every day and explore experiences and worlds beyond their own.
We open hearts.
As Jews with the sacred responsibility of making the world a better place, we approach our teaching and learning with intentionality, reflection, and compassion; recognizing the individuality of each student. Knowledge prepares our students for tomorrow, but ethics and ethical living illuminate their hearts today.
Letter from Shira Deener, Head of School
According to Pirkei Avot, Ethics of Our Fathers, the age of 30 is considered the peak of strength – both physically and in character.
Thirty years ago, our founders developed a groundbreaking model where Jews from all backgrounds would coexist under one roof. This has always been our commitment to the Boston Jewish community. We are stronger together. Unified but not uniform.
I remember when JCDS was just in its nascent stage of formation. My eldest child was in 1st grade and while the school moved homes from time to time, its spirit of innovation and intention remained steady. Hebrew was spoken in the hallways and on the playground, student art adorned the walls, and the spirited singing all attracted me to work at the school as a teacher.
Thirty years later we continue to embody the heart and soul of what we have always been – a warm nurturing community that embraces intentional pluralism. Our character, based on warmth, authenticity, joy, and a solid commitment to Ahavat Israel, has been permanently formed. And now, at our 30 year milestone, we see the fruits of the seeds we planted along the way. Our graduates have become leaders in their fields – STEM, medicine, education, business, computer science, social justice, and the arts, just to name a few. And we continue to be a family that welcomes back our graduates who return for visits or to join our staff.
With 30 years behind us, we thank you, our dedicated donors and friends, who have helped make this all possible. It is your strength of character that helped lead us to our permanent home in Watertown because you value the unique contribution JCDS makes to the broader landscape of Jewish education. My youngest child, along with her remarkable classmates, spent their entire JCDS experience enveloped by the warmth of our colorful, vibrant permanent home. I thank you for helping us make JCDS the premier, inclusive, and pluralistic Jewish day school that it is. A school
that cultivates knowledgeable, passionate Jewish learners, with the capacity and confidence to question, listen, understand, and change the world.
JCDS has a new tagline that in its simplicity captures the essence of who we are today and who we have always been: Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Worlds.
Thank you for your incredible support of JCDS. An investment in our children today is an investment in our collective Jewish future and we couldn’t do it without you.
Letter from Nicole Lieberman Gann, Board President
I’m very excited to take on the JCDS board chair role during JCDS’ 30th anniversary year! My husband, Josh, and I are the parents of Leah (’16), Joe (’19), and Micah (’24). For the first time in 17 years, we’re not JCDS parents. We’re alumni parents! We are proud to join this illustrious group.
You might be wondering why I decided to take on this role right now. For me, it was an easy decision. During my many years as a JCDS parent, I was a parent-board member for nine years, co-chaired the Shabbaton for three years, and served as room parent countless times (including this past year). The commonality of all of these experiences is that I was wearing my “parent hat.” When I last served on the board, I switched off my parent hat in my role as a board member, but of course there were times I would need to focus solely on my children.
Now, I can give my time to this amazing JCDS community with the perspective of 17 years, but without needing to wear two hats. My focus is now on JCDS as we all celebrate this 30 year milestone together, while also being a part of working and planning for the next 30 years and more.
We read in Pirkei Avot that: “A thirty-year old [is at the fullest flower of] strength.” This is so true for JCDS. JCDS is at the forefront of collaborative and progressive education, while still maintaining a focus on Hebrew and joyful Judaism. Since October 7, we’ve all learned as a community about the importance of a Jewish education. JCDS provides this excellent education, and so much more to all the students and families. Indeed, JCDS plays a pivotal role in Boston’s Jewish community.
I am grateful to have witnessed JCDS transform from mitzvah teenager to full-fledged adulthood. We all appreciate the generosity of the founders, families, and community that brought us to this point. I am honored to remain a part of our vibrant community as board chair during this exciting time for JCDS!
We open minds.
Traditional Jewish wisdom informs our contemporary pedagogy. We are fully committed to knowing each student as a unique learner, challenging them to stretch their minds, take on multiple perspectives, persevere through difficulties, and approach learning with joy and integrity.
We open worlds beyond our own.
When we ask a child to learn, we are asking them to discover new ideas and worlds previously unknown to them. To embark on that journey successfully, they must develop socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. We recognize the whole child and their respective and unique gifts, and we prepare them well for a life of exploration and curiosity.
Letter from Shoshanna Goldberg, Director of Development and Communications
Iam so thrilled to introduce myself to you. In the few short months since I joined the staff in September, I have deeply enjoyed getting to know the faculty, students, parents, grandparents, and special friends in this unique and wonderful school. On a daily basis, I am impressed by the obvious pride students take in their work, the clear knowledge and understanding of Hebrew language and Jewish religion and culture, and the warmth and energy I feel in the building every day. I have come to see just how special JCDS is, and how lucky your children, grandchildren, extended family, and special friends are to come to school here each day.
While in many ways JCDS is still a new and evolving school community, there is no doubt that with our shared belief in our mission of intentional pluralistic Jewish education, and excellent Hebrew language learning, we serve an important sector of the Boston Jewish community. Our graduates and their families make a deep and meaningful impact on the world once they move on, and we take pride in knowing we played a role in shaping their hearts and minds.
This year, JCDS is celebrating our 30th anniversary! Throughout the years, we have relied on the support of our community to keep us strong and vibrant. In order for us to move from strength to strength in our next 30 years, we ask you to consider a donation in any amount to our Annual Fund. It is through your generosity and support that we are able to create meaningful programs, invest in our teachers, and ensure that JCDS is accessible to a broad range of families.
I look forward to deepening my relationships within the community and the exciting next chapter of JCDS.
Letter from Sari Korman, Executive Director of Major Gifts
JCDS is a diverse community that comes together powerfully and authentically, in good times and in bad times. Earlier this year I attended a shiva for an alumni grandparent who for many years was an active member of the JCDS community. While his grandchildren graduated years ago, I was struck that nearly everyone had a connection to JCDS. This is a place that leaves a lasting imprint.
This year, we will celebrate the 30th anniversary of JCDS. Thirty years of educating children in how to think; not what to think. Thirty years of teaching students how to think critically, with strong secular academics and Jewish text study, a dual-language curriculum, with Jewish values infused throughout. Thirty years of leaving an imprint on students and their families, and on the community.
We could not do any of this without you. Todah rabah! On behalf of a grateful JCDS community, we thank you for supporting our school. Each year, more and more of our families rely on tuition assistance. As the price of tuition and housing in the greater Boston area continues to increase, wages have not kept up. This is where your support has been critical. It is your generosity that has enabled JCDS to offer generous financial aid packages. Your philanthropic dollars have changed the trajectory of the lives of so many students, families, and the broader community. Many of our graduates reflect back on their time at JCDS with fond memories, but also as the place where they learned the building blocks of collaboration, curiosity, empathy, and respect – the “soft skills” that are often missing in today’s world. Our graduates also report that JCDS prepared them academically for high school and beyond.
As we celebrate our upcoming anniversary, there will be multiple opportunities for you to come back to JCDS, and celebrate with us. I, too, came back to JCDS.
After 21 years as a parent and board member at JCDS, I thought I was done. When I stepped down from the Board, I envisioned that I would champion JCDS from the sidelines as an ambassador and as a steadfast donor. As it turns out, my “break” lasted for all of six weeks. So what happened? Over drinks, Shira’s charm, vision, and leadership persuaded me to partner with her and take on this role. When I think of JCDS’ pull on people, I oftentimes think
of the famous line from The Godfather when Al Pacino’s character laments his continued involvement in the “family business” – “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” As both Shira and Nicole noted in their messages, they too have long histories with JCDS. This community has pulled us back in, and we are happy to give back to the community that gave so much to our families. I recently shifted to a new role at JCDS look forward to working with you in supporting this amazing school.
As we embark on our 30th year, I encourage you to do two things: come back to JCDS, and renew your support of JCDS. I speak from experience when I say that your continued engagement with the JCDS community will pay you back with dividends. I look forward to seeing you, and I thank you again for being a critical part of our community!
Financial Highlights
Last year, we exceeded our fundraising goals thanks to the generosity of you, our JCDS community. Every gift of every size makes a difference. Your continued support enables us to open our doors to families who otherwise could not afford a JCDS education.
Your donations also allowed us to accept 17 students (tuition-free) from Israel in the wake of October 7th. With open arms, we warmly welcomed all those looking for a temporary stay and are forever grateful for your partnership in this mitzvah.
In 2003, we embarked on a Builder’s Fund which allowed us to purchase this campus. We proudly note that many of these donors continue to invest in JCDS today. To this core group, we are thankful for your steadfast commitment.
Our 2023-2024 enrollment remained relatively stable with 170 students, and as we mark 2024-2025, our 30th year, our enrollment has increased! We are delighted to have a robust Gan Nitzan (Kindergarten) class of 24 students.
Report of Gifts
JCDS is profoundly grateful for the generous financial support provided by parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, trustees, friends, and businesses. Donations to the JCDS Annual Fund underwrite academic programs, professional development for faculty and staff, and the flexible tuition fund that allows us to welcome a diverse range of families to our community. The donors listed below made gifts to JCDS between July 1, 2023 and June 30, 2024.

As an educator, I am well aware of the range of educational facilities where one’s children might find themselves. What I think is uniquely special about JCDS is that it’s very much like a family, but with non-negotiably high expectations across the social and academic spectrum, as well as a deep well of resources that address the unique needs of each child as well as each group. All of this resonates deeply with our family values. We want [our daughter] to be in a warm, connected, loving environment and we also want her to be challenged and encouraged to be her absolute best. Our experience with JCDS has proved once and again that this is something that happens there as a matter of routine.
