Winter-Spring 2020

The J offers financial assistance to hundreds of families in the areas of: • J Day Camps • Camp Sabra • Membership • Early Childhood Education • Senior Adult Programming • Inclusion Programming

WELCOME Dear Members, As we enter a new decade, we at the J are continually striving to be the most welcoming and inclusive community leader in your lives. We know many of you will be setting fitness resolutions as the calendar flips to 2020. We at the J are setting some community goals, such as welcoming and caring for the stranger. This Jewish value is mentioned more than any other commandment in the Torah. We believe adopting this as a business and a personal practice can change your community and yourself, no matter what faith you might be. You may have seen that we recently added a welcoming statement to each of our lobbies. We want it known that we are a gathering place for the entire community, where everyone deserves respect, and simply by looking around, you can see the diversity that makes up our amazing J community.

Everyone is welcome at the J The Jewish Community Center welcomes the ENTIRE community. At the J, we treat people with RESPECT, speak kindly, assume the best and serve with spirit. We value DIVERSITY, knowing it creates a vibrant and compassionate community. Let’s remember that we have all been strangers, whether entering a new school, starting a new job or even as a new member of the J. And, developing empathy for others and treating each other with kindness will continue to top of our member and staff code of conduct. And as 2020 settles in, we hope to see you using our group exercise studios, maybe trying a new class; learning new healthy nutrition habits from our registered dietitian; getting motivated (and fit) by our professional personal trainers; and if appropriate, showing a new member where the locker room is located or introducing them to others. While the list of J programs is seemingly endless, you, our members, make participating in them meaningful. We know you will find something within our “walls” to be either intellectually stimulating, physically demanding, enduringly memorable, or maybe just relaxing. Whatever you do here, we hope you’ll make a new friend, create new bonds and share your experiences. I hope you’ll take a look through this guide and find something you love. This is just the beginning of what we have to offer in 2020, so stay tuned throughout the year. Chat with our staff, with other members or family and join us in creating a wonderful experience for yourself and your family at the J. Happy and Healthy New Year to all!

WINTER & SPRING HIGHLIGHTS Something for Everyone! A HEALTHY COMMITMENT

While our goal is to get you energized, moving, and to push yourself to your limits or to just to get to the gym, we also want to help you achieve your Fitness goals! As the new year arrives, make a promise to yourself to stick to achieving your goals. We encourage you to try one of our more than 200 group exercise classes, or train in a group setting with our Signature Training or if you want more focus in a one-on-one setting, we have several personal trainers ready to go.

VACATION DAYS & BREAK CAMPS

The J’s Spring Vacations Days and Spring Break Camp programs offer children the opportunity to let loose and you the knowledge that your children are secure in a safe and active environment. Kids look forward to catching up with friends from other schools and those they may have not seen since J Day Camps the year before. There is no shortage of activities either as your children on any given day may swim, play board games or games in the gym, cook, watch movies, do arts and crafts and even go on field trips!

CELEBRATING THE ARTS

Where some see winter as forcing people inside for many activities, we see it as a chance to let our Cultural Arts programs take center stage! Feed your mind as our New Jewish Theatre season continues through May with four more shows, the St. Louis Jewish Book Festival will feature more authors this December and March (with possibly more to be announced), and if reading is your thing, come by and stock up for the winter at the Used Book Sale in January.

CELEBRATING ABILITIES

We have day-long programs, chances to shine on stage, fitness opportunities and more for people of all abilities. Our many services support our diverse community, regardless of age, and empowers everyone with the chance to be a part of the J. We strive to make all programming adaptable (whenever possible), to meet the needs of all individuals and to create a safe and comfortable environment where ideas can be shared and every individual can feel empowered.

JEWISH SPIRIT

We celebrate our Jewish identity while welcoming people from every faith and background. We provide a rich array of social, cultural and educational programs and events to deepen our connections with Jewish values and our larger Jewish community. We serve as a gathering place for cultural celebrations, community groups and activities for all ages. We encourage everyone to experience the J and see how we are all connected and part of the larger community, with a Jewish twist.

PREPARING FOR A SUMMER OF FUN

Securing a spot that allows your child(ren) to create a lifetime of memories has already started in some instances! Children will make life-long friends, rekindle friendships from summers past and have an amazing time while doing it. Whether J Day Camps or our residential camp at the Lake of the Ozarks, Camp Sabra, it can happen for all. Campers receive swim lessons, leadership opportunities, confidence building and a summer they won’t stop talking about!

GET IN THE ACTION

As the chill of winter approaches, the hardwood inside heats up! We love the action as more than 1,100 boys and girls, from ages three through 18, participate in our youth basketball programs. Team sports provide so much opportunity to learn about one’s self, as you discover and exhibit everyday qualities you hope to strengthen, such as teamwork, leadership, health, skill building and empathy. You can also jump on the field for youth baseball and soccer leagues beginning in March. Adult sports opportunities are also available. Register online at jccstl.org

SIGNATURE SMALL GROUP TRAINING Why Signature Training?

Small group training offers an affordable path for clients to take advantage of a trainer’s expertise – while keeping the fun and competitiveness of a group dynamic. Groups generally never exceed 10 participants which allows for one-onone instruction when needed, but still offers a high-quality workout with additional motivation from your fellow group members. Workouts are tailored to different equipment, purpose, and more, but are all designed to provide significant benefits. You have several options as you discover what works for you. Try a class, make new friends, connect with a new trainer, and find what motivates you! You’ll love the results!

BENEFITS of SIGNATURE TRAINING

• Improve your fitness in cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and body composition • Small Groups (4-10 people) are led by a certified personal trainer to assure proper technique • In a group setting, one-on-one attention is recognized for individual improvement • Easily modify workouts to customize sessions as needed, but always with safety the primary concern • Use of functional, non-traditional training techniques not found in most general fitness classes (TRX, ViPR, CoreHammer, SRT Barbells, etc) • High energy and motivation promotes a challenging, yet fun workout environment • Experience social fitness; be inspired by groupmates; and get challenged (and healthy) all in one!

St. Louis Jewish Book Festival Bookend Event Elderhood: Redefining Aging, Transforming Medicine, Reimagining Life by Louise Aronson________________ Adult

Physician and award-winning author Louise Aronson’s Elderhood takes an essential, empathetic look at a vital but often disparaged stage of life. For more than 5,000 years, "old" has been defined as beginning between the ages of 60 and 70. This means most people alive today will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, and many will be elders for possibly 40 years or more. Yet at the very moment we’re living longer than ever before, we’ve made old age into a disease, or a condition to be dreaded, denigrated, neglected and denied. Aronson uses personal stories to weave a vision full of joy, wonder, frustration, outrage and hope about aging, medicine and humanity.
