member profile Ethan Borg

3. How long have you & your family been members at the JCC?

1. Are you a Rochester Native? I spent a few years in Pittsford then spent the remainder of my childhood in Brighton. I met my wife, Jen, who is from midcoast Maine, at Swarthmore College and together we lived for decades out of the area, in great American cities such as Philadelphia, Seattle, Boston, and in Frederick, MD near Washington, D.C. We moved back to Rochester when our children were young so that they could grow up with their grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.

2. What do you like most about the Rochester community? Having lived in many other cities, I can tell you that Rochester offers a shockingly high quality of life. Our community is very friendly. In other cities, strangers rarely greet you and exchange pleasantries when passing on the sidewalks. This has always bothered me because I grew up in Rochester, where a friendly “hello” is extremely common, if not entirely expected. Rochester is also a very low stress city compared to other places where we lived. People are active despite the rain and snow, and I think this helps. All of this kind of congeals at the JCC, a fulcrum of much of our athletic lives throughout the year. We work out year round at the JCC and frequently we run into friends and have a quick five minute catch-up. You would be surprised how much these little moments of community matter.

You’re going to age me with this question, but I’m game. When I was three years old I went to the preschool here. And I’ve been a member here my whole Rochester life. Much of my childhood was spent playing basketball (Dave Rogachefsky taught me how to play in the JCC gym), hitting racquet balls, and mulling around at the JCC. We’ve passed this on to the next generation, as both of my children went to the Wolk Center and to Gesher. Not to mention that Dave Rogachefsky taught my girls sports as well.

4. Tell us a little about your family. While my wife Jen, daughters Zoleigh and Acadia, and I have a proud heritage here at the JCC, the ties go very deep. I worked one Summer at Camp Sisol. My sisters and my nephew have also worked here or held big events here at times. My parents are members. My sisters and their family members are currently or have been members. Our dues probably paid a fair share towards the new renovation! In our family, the JCC is known simply as the “J” – and that is just common language among our three generations of high JCC utilizers.

5. What is one thing you can’t live without? My family spent 6 months in 2016 living in Spain. One of the important things I wanted to show my girls was that there were good people everywhere you go on the planet. I think one thing we don’t think about is how much we rely on the kindness of strangers. Living in Rochester, we may not often see this in our day-to-day lives, but it is still working its magic in direct and indirect ways. I can tell you honestly as someone who lived abroad, I really was carried a great distance by the kindness of people who didn’t know me and would never see me again.

6. What is your occupation? I come from a long line of entrepreneurs, so I tend to answer this question broadly because I do not fall easily into any single classification all that well. I am almost two decades into being a licensed practitioner of Chinese Medicine, having a practice on Monroe Avenue in Brighton. My previous career was as a software programmer and I have always kept my fingers in that pot as well. My father, Dr. Seth Borg, also a JCC member, and I recently created a company around an app called ‘Qlumi’ (for “clue me in”) that is an invitation, event, and travel platform for big and small parties, weddings, and conferences. We’re just launching it now. My wife, Dr. Jennifer Leigh, is a professor at Nazareth College in the School of Management. Given that she is in the business field, she has always been a giant supporter of my entrepreneurial ventures.

7. What does a typical family dinner look like in your household? We eat our meals together as much as humanly possible. Even with my working late into some evenings and my children’s after school activities, we have been able to keep up this tradition so far. Both of our girls cook regularly. We expect daily “contributions” from our kids, and cooking dinner is often a competitive choice between them. I am surprised at the wide array of meals they can already cook.

8. How has the JCC impacted you and/or your family’s lives?

10. What do you enjoy doing in your down time? Tennis is my big sport and I play it twice a week. My wife reads and as much as we can we socialize with our family and friends. Somehow, and I’m not sure how this happened, my wife recently became a fan of science fiction. So, all of my geek needs are now fulfilled.

11. Share a special summer memory. As a greater family, we used to spend quite a bit of time at Canandaigua Lake – swimming, canoeing, and boating together with parents, sisters, and nieces and nephews. Some of our greatest Summer memories as a family include BBQing a family meal next to the lake.

12. Tell us one thing about you that would surprise most people. People don’t often know this, but I am also a game maker. I actually created an exercise game I call Ethan’s Box Game. It requires no equipment except for a cell phone and it takes advantage of the principles behind the seven minute workout. I made it for myself but found that it really engaged my kids. So I made a website for it at ethansboxgame.com so that others could play it alone or with their kids too. When we are snowed in, we often exercise – and laugh – together. It is a seriously silly game, but it also really burns the calories. I’m always thinking up new ideas like this. And I get a real thrill sharing them with others.

The JCC has kept us healthier, no doubt. Multiple times a week we are either using the Nautilus or cardio equipment in the Fitness Center. Our girls often swim multiple times a week and have taken advantage of Gesher after school activities that include exercise one way or another. While none of us are crazy athletes putting in endless hours at the gym, we feel we maintain a healthy lifestyle by regularly going to the “J”. We also often go to the JCC together as a family, so that all of our exercise needs can be taken care of together.

9. Is fitness part of your routine? As a practitioner of Chinese Medicine, I look at the world from a holistic lens. My children have been raised with the understanding that exercise is necessary multiple times a week if not daily. Our modern life is filled with indulgences. We live in a culture that caters to our every whim. This makes exercise 1000 times more important, because one can quickly veer off into nurturing oneself to death in the US. It may not always be fun to push weights until you strain, but it is absolutely 100% necessary in the modern American culture with all of its sedentary and culinary pleasures.

Motivational Message Try Something New This Summer Written by Daniel N. Irving, Camp Sisol Director

The sun starts to shine. The gray-black-coated snow melts from the edges of all the parking lots. Trees start to bud. The Magnolia flowers bloom and the lilacs fill in. These are just some of the signs that summer is actually coming. Many of us by now have given up on our New Year’s resolutions, but if you are anything like me, these signs of summer pull you outside and keep you motivated. With so many opportunities to get outside, this may be an easier time of year for many to begin new lifestyle habits including stepping up your fitness regime. The outdoors brings inspiration along with much needed Vitamin D, absorbed from the sun. It brightens the spirit and creates more chances to socialize. Why not grab a friend and see some of what the Greater Rochester area provides in the way of outdoor activities?

Festivals

Rochester has a festival virtually every weekend. See what local artisans have been up to all winter. Check out a food truck. Get some good walking in. Here is a link to a list of festivals.

Music /Arts

Rochester is well-known for its vibrant music scene. Of course, we have the Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival but there is also the JCC Ames Amzalak Rochester International Jewish Film Festival and numerous concerts. One must exercise the mind as well as the body. Dancing is an amazing exercise.

Hiking

Our area is rich with parks that are nearby and yet can transport you to a world of forests and nature. Mendon Ponds Park is made up of glacial features that make the terrain and the ecosystem unique and interesting. Just think… you can drive 10 minutes (or better yet, bike there) and feel like you are in the wild. Here are some of the best hiking spots. Check out the NYSDEC site where you can find great info about our parks but also about special events to learn about the history of our parks as well as some of the interesting things that go on there. While there, try some nature photography or drawing or poetry.

Volunteering

How about something that gets you outside, connects you with other people and leaves you with a sense of accomplishment? Volunteering can make a difference in the community and in your life. Here is a list of organizations to consider. I hope you’ll find as I do that the sunshine beckons you outside and that you’ll find some new ways to engage with the many resources for outdoor fun in our area. Whether you are dancing the night away or exploring a nearby park, I hope the nice weather inspires you to get out and try something new. I’m going to try to turn daily walks into an ongoing habit. What change will you make now that you have the chance?

Spotlight: Israeli Folk Dancing at the JCC

Dancing on the deck– Summer 1987 The JCC’s Israeli Folk Dancing program is one of our longest continuously running programs. Every Sunday night dancers of all ages gather to share their love of this centuries old tradition of celebrating culture and community through dance. The Rochester area Israeli Folk Dance group moved from the University of Rochester to the JCC in the late 1970s. Then led by David Valentine, area folk dance leader, the group thrived in its new home. When David retired in the late 1980s three dancers–Max Steiner, Jim Anderson, and Iris Saltsberg–took over the responsibilities for teaching new dances and leading open sessions. Max had been active in the group since moving to Rochester for his pediatric residency at Strong Memorial Hospital, and had met his wife, Devora, at open dancing. Together Max and Devora launched the Israeli Folk Dance performance group “Sharsharet,” meaning “chain.” April Grunspan joined the leadership team in the early 1990s, and helped expand the program’s reach. April taught Israeli Folk Dance at Temple Beth El, and in the summers at Camp Sisol. She introduced teen dancers to the weekend-long Israeli dance workshops and retreats, and started an annual workshop here in Rochester, now in its 20th year. When April relocated South in the early 2000s Max took over on his own, and has been leading the group ever since.

This summer at Horati, the World’s Fair of Israeli Folk Dance, Max will be honored for his over thirty years of leadership of the Rochester Israeli Folk Dance group, and for his critical role in helping to sustain Israeli Folk Dance here in the US. We are so grateful for all that Max has done for the Rochester Jewish community and the perpetuation of this special cultural art form. Mazel Tov, Max, and thank you! WELLNESS

Local vs Organic: Is there a difference?

If we all strive to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables every day, does it matter if they are locally grown? Organic? Is there really a difference? Locally grown produce is just what it sounds like - fruits and vegetables that are grown within a range of where you live – generally within 100 miles of your home. Eating locally grown produce has many advantages including superior taste, increased nutrient availability, unique varieties, support for local farmers, contributing to the local economy, and producing lower carbon emissions. However, just because something is locally grown doesn’t automatically mean it is organic. Organic produce is simply food that is grown without conventional pesticides, fungicides and herbicides. It can be grown anywhere in the world –including near to where you live. Benefits of organic produce include lower pesticide/herbicide load, access to out-of season produce, and greater variety throughout the year (especially in the winter).

extensive certification process and pay annual fees to maintain its certification status. Simply asking a farmer about his or her methods can tell you a lot about the growing approach. Both methods are perfectly acceptable and will provide you with high quality produce.

locally grown produce simply tastes delicious

So, which is better? If I had to pick, I would select locally grown produce. Why? There are simply more benefits to eating locally grown produce than only selecting organic foods. And best of all, locally grown produce simply tastes delicious. Foods that are picked that day (or perhaps the day before) are significantly more flavorful and nutritious. Organic foods that are trucked in will most likely be picked several weeks prior to your purchase. This means that the foods are grown for transport, not for flavor or nutrition. And, as soon as produce is picked, it starts to lose some of its nutrients. The sooner you can eat fresh produce, the healthier it is. However, if you can find both locally grown AND organically grown produce, you have found the best of both worlds. Many local farmers use organic growing methods but may not necessarily be Certified Organic. To become Certified, a farmer must go through an

Because we can’t always get fresh produce here in Rochester, there are certainly times when we must choose foods that are neither locally nor organically grown. Furthermore, there are plenty of foods that will never be grown here such as oranges, avocados and mangoes. But even if a food is not locally grown OR organic, it is still very beneficial to eat – regardless of the growing methods. Getting the nutritional benefits that come with fresh produce will outweigh any possible negative effects of pesticides or lower nutrient values. If purchasing organic or locally grown produce is not in your budget, select what works best for you and your family and try for as much diversity as possible. Eating the rainbow - every color of produce – will provide you with greater health benefits regardless of where the produce was purchased or how it was grown. The JCC has been nominated for one of the top 20 places to take kids in Rochester. Vote for us today! Voting ends Friday, June 16. SPORTS FOR ISRAEL AWARDS LUNCHEON JUNE 4 The JCCs own Eke Aiono will be honored this year with the Distinguished Service Award along with other inductees to the hall of fame and award recipients. The JCC is to receive Brighton Chamber Award on June 7! Congratulations to our JCC leadership, staff, members, board, generous donors and friends for making this possible and helping us to make outstanding contributions to the Brighton community.

Thank You

to our donors for helping us grow! Our generous contributors continue to help sustain the JCC and the value we bring to the lives of our members and the Greater Rochester community. The Our Vision, Our Future capital campaign is still underway and we thank the many whose gracious donations have made this expansion and renovation a reality. jccrochester.org
