CENTER STORY Ageless Art with Heart
By Andrea Kronzek
“A Lifetime of Perspective: 19 Years Celebrating Art and Creativity” is featured in the Goldman Art Gallery April 23-May 14 mom certainly has an eye for beautiful artwork.” Barry Perlis (cover photo), one of the artists whose work is featured in this year’s exhibit, is primarily a self-taught artist. He works in virtually every medium, including acrylic, water color, Plexiglas, copper and steel sculpture. He enjoys being involved in the Jewish community and has always looked to art as his creative outlet. “Participating in the Lifetime of Perspective senior art show is another way to connect my Jewish involvements and my creative passion.”
Her love of the exhibit inspires Kandy Hutman, retired Bender JCC staff member, to return each year to coordinate “A Lifetime of Perspective.”
For the 19th year, the Bender JCC will host “A Lifetime of Perspective,” a celebration of the creative talents of our community’s amateur artists age 65+. But don’t let the word “amateur” fool you. Visitors to the exhibit will have the opportunity to view sophisticated, inspiring and thoughtprovoking works, reflecting the full and colorful lives that our senior artists have lived.
This special annual exhibit was created by Deena and Jerome Kaplan and their family in memory of Deena’s parents, Eve and David Berliant. It is underwritten by the Kaplan family, the Bender JCC’s Deena and Jerome A. Kaplan Fund for Senior Adult Programming, and the Berliant/Kaplan Fund of the United Jewish Endowment Fund of The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington.
“A Lifetime of Perspective” is an eclectic and exciting exhibit that is always a crowd pleaser for patrons of all ages. Participants submit works in a broad variety of media, including paintings, prints, photography, jewelry, sculpture, collage, fine crafts, and glass, wood, fabric and metal art.
Karen Kaplan, a daughter of Deena and Jerry, chairs the exhibit. She says that her mother has spent a lifetime around beautiful art. “My mother saw her father paint in oil and started collecting contemporary paintings with our dad. They then moved onto wood, glass, textiles, basketry and more. Our

“The Kaplan family’s ongoing support for this special exhibit is deeply appreciated,” says Debbie Sokobin, senior adult services director. “It provides a warm and intimate venue for our senior adults to showcase their considerable talent and creativity, and is an amazing exhibit for the entire community to enjoy.”

Kandy Hutman, volunteer coordinator of “A Lifetime of Perspective,” is retired as a staff member of the Bender JCC’s adult services department. One of the reasons she returns each year to give of her time and heart to this program is that she loves the whole process and the joy of the opening reception when the grandchildren and children are the ones who get to say what a great job their loved ones have done. “There are few things more moving than seeing them honor their grandparents and parents, rather than the other way around.”

My Four Questions Message from Michael Relief, dismay and bewilderment ― three emotions that I don’t typically experience simultaneously. But, those were the conflicting thoughts that ran through my mind after learning that the suspect arrested for making the bulk of the hoax bomb threat calls to our JCC, and JCCs and other Jewish institutions across North America, was a Jewish Israeli teen.
less interest in belonging to Jewish institutions in general, there is less of a connection to Israel, and there are more dual faith families. In the Torah, before the Israelites are freed, God tells Moses to tell the story to their children and children’s children. The future of the Jewish people is presumed. Our opportunity, as a JCC, is to expand the ways in which we provide onramps to a Jewish journey by providing connections to our traditions, culture and values in ways that support community and create meaning to help ensure a Jewish future that enriches lives.
Different communities responded differently to this crisis. A few JCCs saw significant withdrawals from their preschool, a slow-down in summer camp enrollment and declines in membership that they attributed to the What is the role of the JCC in serving ongoing threats. It was disheartening the broader community? At our core, for me to hear those effects from JCCs are welcoming and inclusive my colleagues. We did not have that experience as our families, members Michael Feinstein, President & CEO for both the Jewish and broader community. We are encouraged to and participants have stood by us through two hoax bomb threats. As a Jewish welcome the stranger at our Passover table and community center, we serve both the Jewish and invite all who are hungry to come and eat. To create broader community. The steadfast resolve of those a more inclusive and thriving community we can we serve provided comfort and encouragement as provide more opportunities for our Jewish and nonmy staff and I navigated our response to the threats. Jewish communities to come together, as we did with our recent MultiFaith Film Festival. As I think about what we have been through, and recognize that it still may not be over, I find myself What do the last two and half months mean to me? with more questions than answers, which is fitting The arrest in Israel was for many of the phone-call given the approach of Passover – our holiday of hoax bomb threats. I am wary about the ease with asking questions. As I prepare for the Seder, here which copycats can follow. I am thankful that all of the threats have been hoaxes, but I also know that are the four questions that I will be thinking about. there have been many other anti-Semitic acts in our What does it mean to go from oppression to community. With safety and security on the forefront liberation today? Even if the bomb threats were of my mind, we will not become complacent. We not based in anti-Semitism, we are nonetheless will continue to be vigilant, keeping in mind the witnessing an increase in anti-Semitic acts across importance of maintaining the warm and welcoming the country. Yet, based on a recent survey of U.S. environment that you expect. To accomplish this, we adults, the Pew Research Center again reported will need to devote significantly more of our budget that Jews are the most popular religious group in the to security.
