Your Health and Safety are our Priority.

Building Safety Measures We have implemented the following safeguards to protect you during the COVID-19 period:

THE FRONT ENTRANCE: everyone is required to use the hand-washing station before entering the building.

THE MEMBER & GUEST DESK: staff wear face shields, and work behind a plexiglass barrier.

y Installed plexiglass barriers between our customers and our team members. y Installed floor decals to reinforce 2-metre social distancing. y Installed signs on front doors and windows to control the number of people in the building at one time, and reinforce social distancing.

THE AQUATICS CENTRE: distancing is observed in group classes and lane swimming.

y Enhanced cleaning and disinfecting measures in all areas. y Installed a hand-washing station, and distributed hand sanitizer throughout the building to promote good personal hygiene and hand washing protocols for our staff and members.

Message from the Board President Salomon Casseres Board President

I have had the wonderful honour of writing “welcomes” and “thank yous” in our program guides for the last three years. It is one of the perks of being Board President. Usually one feels a tinge of sadness when writing your last one, as your term is coming to an end, but for me this one is even more thrilling than the first. Given all we have been dealing with these past six plus months, I didn’t think we would have a chance to start running programs, let alone need a program guide.

It is a testament to the great work of our staff and the dedication our community has shown to everyone’s health and well being that we are able to start moving forward to our new normal.

Having a program guide also allows me, on behalf of the Board of Directors and the JCC staff, to wish everyone well. Wish you all health and happiness. We hope you have been OK during this difficult time and want you to know we are here – have been throughout – to support each individual and our community in any way needed. It also allows me to say thank you. Thank you to the staff for all their hard work and dedication and putting the J first. For having our virtual J and the community support it brought, available the moment we needed to close the doors of our physical location – and have kept it going even as we slowly open our facilities.

Thank you to our members for sticking with us. Your support, even though our building wasn’t open, was more important than

you realize. And a special thank you to all that donated this year to our reconfigured Annual Campaign. This year it became our Covid Relief Fund Campaign and you really came through. We were able to raise over $200,000, which was a record amount many times over. You all helped us even though it was supposed to be us helping you.

How incredible that we have our fall programs starting up. There will be a few less programs available. There will be new protocols in place. But you will be getting what you expect from us – leading class programs and activities that will bring you back to the J and hopefully making life feel like it is getting back closer to “normal”.

It has been an absolute honour being Board President. I want to thank everyone for all their support throughout. Too many names to mention. Easier to just thank all our Board members, J staff, J members and donors. I really appreciate it.

Fall also brings the Jewish High Holidays.

It is a time of reflection and renewal.

Perfectly timed.

After earning an MSW from Florida Atlantic University with a focus on child welfare, Nicole joined the Peace Corps, and served as a community and youth development volunteer in Armenia for two years. Her experience has given her the knowledge to work with youth from various socio-economic, cultural, ethnic, educational and other diverse backgrounds. Growing up, she was an active member of the JCC, and is thrilled to now join as an employee.

Nicole’s goal is to provide a fun and safe environment for the teens in our community to help them become influential leaders of tomorrow.

There will be no competition fee for returning students - we will use credits from last year. New Advanced students will be charged $44 in January.

CLASS PLACEMENT Students will be emailed regarding class placement. Advanced students will be invited to continue in the Advanced level.

Sept 10 - Nov 10 Over the past 6 months, our lives have been truly upended - our routines destroyed, our work transformed, our gathering places shut. As a result, we are compelled to view the world in new and different ways. As a means of sharing this experience with one another, The Zack Gallery has created this exhibit: a series of stories told through narratives and photographs that showcase the way in which members of our community are looking at the world right now.

Nov 12 - Jan 4 Through a series of 18 portraits (in Judaism, the number 18 represents the word “chai,” which means “life”), Carol Wylie creates a silent dialogue between Jewish survivors of the Holocaust and Indigenous survivors of Canada’s residential schools. In her words, “the painted portrait is a true meeting of two subjectivities, requiring a commitment of time and engagement unique to the process.”

By interviewing, photographing, sketching, and painting close up portraits of survivors, Wylie creates an unflinching look at trauma, injustice, and the power of human beings to survive the unthinkable. The quote that gives this exhibition its name is from Greek poet Dinos Christianopoulos: “They buried us, but they didn’t know we were seeds.”

Every other Wednesday, Hope Forstenzer, Director of the Sidney and Gertrude Zack Gallery, and Jessica Gutteridge, Artistic Managing Director of the NRT and the Chutzpah! Instruction by S-class Fencing Joseph and Eli Schenkel - Olympic hopefuls with 20+ years of combined competitive and coaching experience.
