WelcometothestartofanewandexcitingseasonatCampShai!Wearethrilledtohaveyouandyourcampersjoin usforwhatpromisestobeasummerfilledwithunforgettableexperiences,growth,andfun.Wehavesomenew programs,initiatives,andcommunitygatheringsnottobemissedthissummer.

Newthissummer,allcamperswillparticipateinour“Makin’Mitzvahs”initiativewhichwillintroducecommunity serviceprojectsforallageseveryFridaybeforeourShabbatcelebration.Fromrandomactsofkindnesstoart projectstodogtoydrives,camperswilllearnmanywaystoappreciatethevariouscommunitiesthattheyareapart ofbothatcampandathome.

Asacamp,weareworkingtoimproveourday-to-daycommunicationwithyou,includinghavingpictures throughoutthedaytoletyouknowwhatyourcamperisupto!Thissummer,wewillbeusingBrightwheel.

Aswekickoffthisseason,wewanttohighlighttheadditionofanewmidda(value)toourwork-“ometzlev“whichdirectlytranslatesto“courageoftheheart.“Atcamp,webelievethatsteppingoutofone‘scomfortzone, facingchallengeshead-on,andlearningbothfromsuccessesandsetbacksareallessentialcomponentsof development.Encouragingresiliencefostersstrength,adaptability,andconfidenceinourcampers,preparingthem forwhateverlifemaythrowtheirway.Weareexcitedtofindnewandinnovativewaystotalktocampersabout courageousnessandtoencourageourcommunitytorecognizeandrewardthosethattakearisktolearn somethingnew,makeanewfriend,orleadacampsong.

Inadditiontoaddinganewmiddatoourranks,wearethrilledtolaunchanewcommunity-focusedinitiativethis summerandrevivesomeoldtraditionsthatallowfamiliestoexperiencethejoyofcamptogether.Whilekehillah (community)hasbeenanintegralpieceofCampShai’sworkformanysummers,wewantedtocreatemore opportunitiesforcamperstoconnectwiththeircommunity,tounderstandhowtheycancontributetoanuplifting andpositivecommunity,andtodemonstratehowwecancelebratethecommunitythatwedohave.

Additionally,wewillbeopeningupseveralShabbatcelebrationsthroughoutthesummerandinvitingparentsand otherfamilymemberstojoinandexperiencethejoyandmagicofourfavoritesongs,ourillustriousShabband,and never-endingpiesintheface!

Last,butcertainlynotleast,wewillberevivingthelongstandingtraditionofpizzapotlucksandhostingourfirst sincethepandemiconWednesday,July10th.Forthosenewtoourcommunity,thiseventwillbeopentoall familiesofcampersenrolledinourprogramsthissummer.Familiesareencouragedtobringapizzatosharewith thecommunityandourstaffwillbefacilitatingseveralactivitieswhereyouandyourfamilycanexperiencethejoy ofCampShaitogether.

MISSIONSTATEMENT

AtCampShai,wearemorethanjustadaycamp.Weareacommunitymadeupofcampers,families, andstaff,allwiththesamedesire—togiveallkidsafunandsafespacetoexplore,imagine,and belong.CampShaiprovidesengagingactivitiesforourcampersthatsparktheirimaginationand inspirethemtocelebratetheirindividuality.

BEHAVIORALHEALTH&INCLUSIONPHILOSOPHY

CampShaiisaplacewhereALLcampersinourcarecanfeelsafe,nurtured,andaccepted. Wedoourbesttosupporttheindividualneedsofourcamperswhileprovidingasafe, healthy,andinclusivesocialenvironmentforthegreatercampcommunity.Coretoour mission,CampShaiwelcomesmanycamperswithidentifiedneeds,solongasweareable tosupportthemandprovidetheappropriatelevelofcarewithoutcompromisingthe safetyandwell-beingofthemortheirpeers.Allcampstaffaretrainedinthemostcurrent inclusivebehaviorpracticesand,forcamperswithhigherneeds,CampShaihasinclusioncounselors thataretrainedandsupportedbyabehavioralhealthspecialist.Whileweareabletoservemany camperswithidentifiedneedsanddoourbesttodoso,weareunabletoserveeveryone.Ifyour camperhaslearning,cognitive,and/orbehavioraldifferencesorspecialneeds,pleasecontactthe CampShaidirectordirectlypriortoenrollment,sowecandeterminewhetherweareabletoprovide thenecessaryresourcesandaccommodationstosupportyourcamper.

Chesed: Kindness - We treat one another with kindness and compassion. We appreciate each member of our community for who they are.

ExtendedCare

SunriseCare(7:30–8:30am):CampShaiisexcitedtoofferSunriseCare!Thisprogramis$20/dayor$80/week. CampersregisteredforSunriseCarewillgetanearlystarttotheircampdaywithavarietyofbooks,crafts,and gamesavailable.

SunsetCare(4:00–5:30pm):OurSunsettersgettofeelthecampmagicalittlelongerwithengaging,hands-on programmingdevisedbyourleadershipteam.SunsetCareis$40/dayor$160/week.Campersregisteredfor Sunsetwillgettomaketimelesscampcraftsandplayavarietyofgameswithothercampersandstaff.

WhenpickingyourchildupfromSunsetCare,pleasebeontime.AllcampersregisteredforSunsetCaremaybe pickedupaslateas5:30pmeachday.Ifachildispickeduppast5:30pm,a$25latefeewillbechargedtothe cardonfile.Ifachildisnotpickedupby5:30pm,andwearenotabletoreachtheirguardians,individuals listedonthechild’semergencyformwillbecalledtopickupthechild.Ifanauthorizedadultcannotbereach, thepolicewillbecalledtothepremises.

Emergency Pick-Up and Drop-Off Procedures

InclementWeather

Intheeventthatinclementweatherimpactsourpick-upordrop-offprocedures,ourcampadministrationteam willmessageallfamiliesviatheBrightwheelapptoaddressanychangestoourregularprocedures.Typically, intheeventofrainorthunder,theprimarychangewillbetomoveallcampersinsideaclassroomwhilewaiting fortheirpeerstoarriveorwaitingtobedismissed.Whilethisdoesnotcreateavisiblechangeforfamilies,it typicallyresultsinaslightdelayinourproceduresascamperswillneedtowalkfarthertothegates.

Wemonitortheweatherreportsregularlyandwillmakesuretocommunicatewithfamiliesassoonaswe knowifthereareanyanticipateddelaysorchanges.Intheeventofsevereweather,wewillhaltourhug-andgoserviceandaskthatparentsandfamiliescomeintoourfacilities.Wewilldoourbesttocommunicatetoall familiescurrentlyinthehug-and-golineaboutthischangeandwillsendamessageviatheBrightwheelapp.

EmergencyDismissal

Allauthorizedadultsmustbenotedonyour“Pick-UpAuthorization”forminyourcamper’sCampInTouch accountinorderforustoreleaseyourchildtothem.Ifachildisgoinghomewithafriend,thatchild’sguardian mustcommunicatewiththeCampLeadershipteamviae-mailtoaddadditionalauthorizedadultstotheir camper’sforms.Allauthorizedadultsareexpectedtopresentagovernment-issuedphotoIDwhenpickingup theircamper(s)eachday.Pleaserememberthatourstaffmembersinteractwithhundredsoffamilymembers eachdayandeveryfamilyisdifferent.WerequireaphotoIDsothatwecanensurewearealwaysreleasing yourcampertoanadultthathasbeenauthorizedtopickupthatchild.Weappreciateyoursupportinmaking CampShaiasafeplace!

Visitors

How“Jewish”isCampShai?

CampShaifocusesonuniversalhumanvalues(Middot)framedwithaculturallyJewishlens.Wedonotidentify withaspecificdenominationofJudaismandweembraceeveryonewhowantstobeapartofourcommunity whethertheyareJewish-identifyingornot.Wewelcomecampersandstaffofallbackgrounds!Ifyoulike games,formingconnectionswithothers,andhavingthebestsummerever,CampShaiistheplaceforyou. ManyofourprogramswillincludeHebrewwordsandphrases,aswellaslessonsfromJewishteachings.We observeShabbatwithanall-campcelebrationtoendtheweek,aswell.

ShabbatsignifiesthedayofrestfortheJewishpeopleandcanbecelebratedindifferentways.InJewish tradition,ShabbatbeginsatsundownonFridayandisobservedthroughsundownonSaturday.AtCampShai, ShabbatisaspecialtimethatwecelebrateasacampcommunityeachFridayafternoon.WewelcomeShabbat withsongs,blessings,andrecognitionofcamperaccomplishments.Thisisatimeforallcampersandstaffto reflectontheirweekandhighlightthespecialmoments.

AfterMorningCircle,theentirecampwillbeinvitedtoparticipateinanactivitytogether.Someweekshave rotationsofspecialcrafts,games,andpuzzleswhileotherweekshavewhole-campteamchallenges.All activitiesadheretothatsession’sthemeandallowourteamthechancetogetcampersexcitedtoengagewith campersinothergroupsandspecialtyareas.

Makin’Mitzvahs

Afterlunch,eachcampergroupwillhavetheopportunitytoparticipateina“mitzvah”orgooddeedthat contributestoourcampcommunity,theJCCcommunity,orthelargerDenverarea.Ouryoungestcamperswill spintheirMitzvahwheelsandchoosefromaselectionofwordsofgratitude,randomactsofkindness,or writingletterstolovedones.Campersinotheragegroupswillparticipateinchallengesandactivitiessuchas makingno-sewdogtoysforalocalanimalshelter,creatingsomethingnewoutofrecycledmaterials,or creatingpaperflowersforanupcomingWolfTheaterperformance.Eachweekwillpresentanewopportunity forcamperstogivebackandlearnmoreaboutthetruenatureofkehillah(community).

GroupShabbat

Afterlunch,camperswillhavetimewiththeirgrouptocelebratetheiraccomplishmentsfromtheweek.Their counselorswillgiveoutpatchestoaddtotheirCampShaicompassandawardthecovetedMenschofthe WeekpatchtothecamperwhobestexhibitedallofCampShai'smiddot(values).

Standards of Behavior

CampShaistrivestosupporttheindividualneedsofitscamperswhileprovidingasafe,healthy,andinclusive socialenvironmentfortheentirecommunity.Conflictresolutionandpositivereinforcementareusedto encouragedesiredbehaviors.CampShaiisaplacewhereallcamperscanfeelsafe,nurtured,andaccepted. Ridiculingandteasingarenotallowed.Campersareremindedaboutthispolicyinagentlebutfirm manner.Thisbehaviormakesallofusfeelbad,andoftentimesresultsinaggressiveandphysical actingout.

Campstaffteach“Nicehandsornohands”toourcampers.Physicallyviolentandaggressivebehavioris notallowed.Achildmaybesenthomeiftheyareinvolvedinaphysicalaltercation.

Threatening,intimidating,andvulgarlanguagearenotallowed.

BullyingisnottoleratedatCampShai.

Graffitiandotheractionsthatdamagepropertywillbedealtwithonacasetocasebasis,andmayinvolve chargingguardiansforthedamage.

TheStaffofCampShaiareheretocreateapositiveenvironmentforallinvolved.Weusean Understandingandfirmapproachtocamperswhocompromisetheeffectivenessofthestaff(e.g.,noncooperation,notlistening,leavingthegroup,inappropriateboundaries).

TheCampLeadershipTeamaimstobeproactiveandempatheticwhenitcomestocampers’behavior. Familiesmaybeaskedtomeetwithcampleadershiptoestablishstrategiestobeenforcedatcampand athome.

Repetitiveoccurrencesofanyoftheabovebehaviorafterrepeatedwarningsmayresultindismissalfrom CampShaiwithoutarefund.Guardianswillbenotifiedpriortoanyactiontaken.

Ourbusdriversareheretokeepourcampersandstaffsafeandtomakesuretheygettoandfromtheir destinationsontime.Campersandstaffwilldotheirbestnottodisturbthem.

Drivershaveimportantinformationtoshare.Whenthedriverneedstosaysomething,everyonepaysclose attentionandlistens.

SubmittingCamperForms

Havingtheseformsmakesforsafeandhealthychildrenatcampandathome.Thisinformationwillhelpusget betteracquaintedwithyourfamilyandchild,andtheinformationontheirhealthhistoryformwill assistourstaffincaringforanyidentifiedneedsthatyourchildmayhave.Theseformsarerequiredinorder foryourchildtoattendcamp.Pleasenoteanyallergiesorhealthneeds(asthma,diabetes,etc.)thatyourchild has,aswellasmedicationtakenduringcamphours.

Guardiansmustprovideupdatedinformation,includingallmedical,developmental,orpsychological informationregardingtheirchildpriortothestartofcampsothatwemayplanstrategiesforyourcamperto succeed.Changesinlifesituations(suchasdivorce,death,loss,recentmoves,accidents,andfears)often influencechildren’sbehaviorandareimportantforustobeawareof.ALLINFORMATIONISHANDLED CONFIDENTIALLY.

All forms for camp are found in your CampInTouch account online and must be completed and submitted no later than Wednesday, May 8th. Campers cannot attend camp without completed forms. Anycamperthatisunder48“inheightwillberequiredtowearalifejacketinthepool.Lifejacketswillbe providedbyCampShaiandareU.S.CoastGuardapproved.Camperswillhavetheabilitytotestoutoftheir lifejacketiftheyareastrongenoughswimmer.Anycampersinterestedinparticipatinginthattestorpassing anadditionaltesttoswiminthedeependofthepoolwillhavetheopportunitytodosoduringswimtimesat campaslongasastaffmemberisavailabletoadministerthem.Campstaffwilldoourbesttocoordinatea timeforthecampertotakethetestassoonaspossible.

CampShaialsoreservestherighttorequestclearancefromalicensedmedicalormentalhealthprofessional atanytimepriortoorduringcamptoallowparticipation.Contagiousdiseasesmustbereportedtothecamp bytheguardianassoonastheillnesshasbeendiagnosedsothatotherfamiliesmaybenotifiedofthepossible exposure.Pleaseremindyourchildthatallinjuries,nomatterhowminor,mustbereportedtotheircounselor.

AtleastoneCampShaistaffmemberineachgroupiscertifiedinFirstAid/CPRandallCampShaistaffhave undergonetraininginsafetyandemergencyprocedures.EachgroupcarriesaFirstAidKitandEmergency Binderatalltimes.Allstaffaretrainedinemergencydrillsandprocedurespriortocamp.Duringemergencies, theyutilizespecificsupervisionstrategiestoensurecampersaresafe.CampShaialsorunsroutineemergency drillsthroughoutthesummerinaccordancewithlicensingregulationstoensurethatcampersandstaffare preparedintheeventofanemergency.

InjuriesatCamp

CampShaihaspoliciesinplacetoensurethatparents/guardiansareinformedaboutanyinjuriestheirchild maysustainatcamp.Forinjurieslikescrapesandbumps,counselorswillperformthenecessaryfirstaidand logthecareprovidedinanOuch!Report.Thesereportswillbesenthomeinyourcamper'sbackpack.Ifitisa moreseriousinjury,yourchild’scounselor,UnitHead,orDirectorwillphonetoinformyouoftheinjury. Dependingontheseverityoftheinjury,youmayalsoreceiveanIncidentReport.

Medication

Medicationsthataretobeadministeredduringcamphoursmusthavethe“MedicationAdministration Permission”formcompletedandsubmittedbyWednesday,May8th.Othermedicationsthatrequirespecial training,suchasemergencyseizureordiabetesmedications,requirethatpaperworkissubmittedinadvance sothatCampShai'snurseconsultantcanreviewandtrainthenecessarystaffmembers.

CampShai’son-callnurse,TOTTSNurseConsulting,isavailablebyphoneforourstaffshouldanymedical questions,concerns,ormedicalemergenciesoccur.ThenursehasreviewedallCampHealthPoliciesand ProceduresandisinregularcontactwiththeCampDirectortodiscussanymedical-relatedincidents,trends, and/orbestpractices.

Immunizations

AllCampShaicampersmustbeimmunizedaccordingtotheStateofColorado'srecommendedimmunization scheduleorbeonaplanviathephysiciantogetontheschedule.Medicalexemptionsforimmunizationsare theonlyexemptionsrecognizedbyCampShai.Allmedicalexemptionsmustbecompletedbyadoctorandon theappropriatestate-approvedform.Childrenthatcannotprovideimmunizationrecordswillnotbe permittedtoenrollinCampShai.

Atthistime,CampShaiisnotrequiringaCOVIDvaccinationforcampers;however,familiesarestrongly encouragedtomakesurethatcampersareuptodateontheirCOVIDvaccinationsbythestartofcamp.

Sunscreen

Pleaseapplysunscreentoyourchildeverymorningbeforearrivingatcamp.Wewilldoourbesttoensurethat sunscreenisreappliedfrequentlytoeverycamper.CampShaistaffwillhelpapplysunscreenifnecessary. CampShaiwillprovidesunscreenintheformofRockyMountainSunscreenKidsSPF50Mist.Ifyouchooseto sendalternativesunscreenforyourchild,itmustcomeintheoriginalbottleandhavetheirnameclearly labeledonthatbottle.

LicePolicy

CampShaifollowstheColoradoDepartmentofPublicHealth(CDPH)LicePolicy: TheColoradoDepartmentofPublicHealth(CDPH)recommendsthatschoolsandchild-carefacilitiesmaintainan activeeducationalcampaignforguardiansontheaccuratediagnosisandcorrecttreatmentofheadlicecasesto preventtransmissionofliceinschoolsandreducelostschooldaysduetoheadliceinfestation.Headlice,whilea significantsocialproblem,donottransmitdiseasetohumans.Traditionally,headlicepoliciesinschools emphasizedthatachildinfestedwithheadlicecouldnotreturntoschooluntilnonitswerefoundintheirhair (“no-nit”policy).

Ifitisdeterminedthatacamperhaslice,CampShaiwillcheckALLcampersforliceornits.Familieswillbe notifiedshouldwedothisandifcampershaveliceornits,guardianswillreceiveaphonecalltopickuptheir camperfromcamp.Camperswillnotbeallowedtocomebackuntiltheyarefullytreatedandlice/nitfree.

MandatoryReporting

IntheStateofColorado,allprofessionalswhocareforchildren,includingCampShaistaff,arerequiredbylaw toreport“reasonablesuspicion”ofchildabusetoeitheralawenforcementagencyoracountychildprotective agency.CampShaistaffareexperiencedandtrainedinassessingsituationsthatmayleadthemtomakeachild abusereferral.CampShaiiscommittedtomaintainingasafeenvironmentforchildrenandtoservingour childrenandfamiliesinthebestwaywecan.Insituationswherewewouldhavetomakeareferraltoeither lawenforcementorprotectiveservices,wewillattempttomaketheprocessassupportiveaspossible.

Accident&IllnessProcedures

Intheeventofanaccidentorillness,trainedCampShaistaffmemberswilladministerfirstaid.Should additionaltreatmentbeneeded,parents/guardianswillbenotifiedimmediately.Iftheycannotbereached, CampShaistaffwillmoveontothecamper’semergencycontactlistandbegincallinguntilwereachsomeone. Ifachildisinneedofimmediateemergencymedicalattention,wewillcall911andthechildwillbetakento thenearesthospital.

AllleadCampShaistaffaretrainedinCPR,FirstAid,andStandardUniversalPrecautions.Additionally,Camp ShaiUnitHeadsandadditionalselectstaffaretrainedinmedicationadministration,includingemergency epinephrine(EpiPen)andasthmamedications.

SuspiciousPersonsorActivity

MissingorLostChild

Whilewelovewhenfamilieswanttotreattheircamper’sgroup,wedoaskthateveryonefollowafew guidelinestohelpusensurethatwearekeepingcamperssafe.Weaskthatfamiliesreachouttoourcamp administrationteamwithatleast48hoursnoticesothatwecanconfirmanyallergiesordietaryneedsinyour camper’sgroupthatmayneedtobeconsidered.Wealsoaskthatanytreatsbroughtintocamparefor everyoneinyourcamper‘sgroupandarepre-packaged(popsiclesareagreatoption!).
