This is the 12th annual Our Town magazine produced by the chamber. We are proud of our county and its many wonderful events, over 400 unique member businesses and incredibly talented and friendly citizens.

The chamber is the lead producer of the Concerts on the Creek summer music series, the July 4 fireworks celebration, and is a strong supporter of shopping small and locally. The chamber is honored to provide two scholarships each year to Western Carolina University and Southwestern Community College. All told, the chamber funds a Community Grant Program each year that has given back more than $143,000 to deserving non-profit organizations in Jackson County. We also assist with Outdoor Movie Nights, host monthly S.T.I.R. Business After Hours events, the popular Stonewall Challenge Golf Tournament, the WNC Fly Fishing Trail and led Jackson County to being named the Premier Trout Fishing Destination in the state of N.C. in 2016.

The Historic Jackson County Courthouse (now the home of the Jackson County Public Library) in Sylva is said to be one of the most photographed spots in the state.

CASHIERS/ SAPPHIRE VALLEY

Cashiers is an unincorporated village on the southern end of Jackson County. This quaint community is home to some of the highest vistas in the county.

Sitting at 3,484 elevation, Cashiers is known for its eclectic shops and boutiques, world-renowned private golf courses, majestic views, and restaurants featuring masterful chefs serving up mouth-watering cuisine.

At the center of Cashiers is the Village Green and Commons, a park with a playground, two stages, sculptures and trails.

This site is home to many festivals, arts and crafts shows and other community events. Each year, the Greater Cashiers Area Merchants Association organizes the Groovin’ on the Green concert series, which offers free music every Friday night from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Other popular annual events include the Tour de Cashiers bicycle ride, the Cashiers

Designer Showhouse, Chirstmas Parade, and annual July 4 fireworks event.

Cashiers is surrounded by beautiful mountains, with perhaps the most scenic being Whiteside Mountain. Whiteside has incredible panoramic views from the top of a mild hike to the peak. Whiteside is located directly on the Macon County/ Jackson County line in between Cashiers and Highlands. To the east of Cashiers, the highest waterfall this side of the Rockies is located in Sapphire Valley, just down Highway 64. Whitewater Falls is easily accessible and well worth the effort. A short trail takes you to a nice viewing platform.

Sapphire Valley is a community just a few miles east of Cashiers. Sapphire Valley features two 18-hole golf courses, along with one nine-hole executive course. The resort is a popular spot in Sapphire, offering food, festivals, concerts, ziplining, snow skiing, and foot golf.

CHEROKEE

Cherokee is a town on the reservation home of the Eastern Band of the Cherokee Nation, in western North Carolina. At Oconaluftee Indian Village, the 18th-century Cherokee lifestyle is preserved via live demonstrations. In summer, the drama “Unto These Hills” tells the tribal story at the outdoor Mountainside Theatre. The nearby Great Smoky Mountains National Park features campgrounds and Appalachian hiking trails.

Cherokee is home to the Harrah’s Cherokee Casino Resort, a world-class venue for gaming, lodging, dining, concerts and much more. The Cherokee Museum is another popular spot for visitors, as is the tremendous fishing opportunities in the Cherokee community.

CULLOWHEE

Cullowhee, which means “white lily” in Cherokee, is an unincorporated community comprised mostly of Western Carolina University and the surrounding businesses and residences designed to service campus needs.

Western Carolina University has been named the premiere outdoor adventure college in the region for the third year in a row, according to a Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine online readers poll. WCU has one of the most honored and respected marching bands in the country, Pride of the Mountains, having recently played the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (2014) and the Rose Bowl Parade (2011).

Enrollment at WCU has steadily grown to over 10,000 students. WCU is ranked in the Top 5 nationally for undergraduate research; has a 16-1 student to teacher

The community of Cullowhee is home to Western Carolina University. This beautiful campus sits in a valley surrounded by mountains on all sides and provides a learning and living culture unlike any other for its 10,000+ students. ratio; and offers more than 35 graduate degrees and certificates.

Near Cullowhee is the Village of Forest Hills. Forest Hills is primarily a residential area for university faculty members.

Cullowhee is the fastest growing area in Jackson County. Cullowhee was recently named by SmartAsset.com as the No. 1 place to retire in N.C., as it relates to the Retirement Tax Friendliness Index, which takes into account property, income, fuel, sales, and Social Security tax data.

DILLSBORO

A village of shops, crafters, family restaurants and diverse festivals, Dillsboro is proud to host annual festivals including the Front Street Arts and Crafts Show, the Summer Arts and Crafts Market, ColorFest, the WNC Pottery Festival, Lights and Luminaries, and an Easter Hat parade, just to name a few.

The popular Great Smoky Mountains Railroad makes a stop in Dillsboro throughout the busy spring, summer and fall months.

Dillsboro’s central location is just minutes away from Western North Carolina’s premier attractions and activities — the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Cherokee Indian Reservation, the Nantahala River and the South’s most scenic mountains, rivers and waterfalls.

Dillsboro has retained its small town charm through its historic buildings, antique stores, vintage shops and quality crafts, while embracing new businesses.

The way to experience Dillsboro is on foot, strolling from shop to shop. Along

the way, you may wander into artisans’ studios to watch the creation of one-ofa-kind, hand-made works of fibers, clay, glass, metal or precious gems.

Dillsboro is a Mountain Trout Heritage City and its WNC Pottery Festival was named a Southeastern Tourism Society Top 20 Event. Four new restaurants, an antique shop, and a merchantile have recently opened in the growing town. The 1993 blockbuster “The Fugitive,” was filmed here and in 2016 the soon-to-be released movie “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” was partially filmed at Dillsboro business Country Traditions.

Many gift shops and galleries focus on local artisans; and some are working artisan’s studios where visitors can watch work in progress and talk to the artisans.

There is plenty of whitewater rafting on the Class 1 & 2 Tuckaseigee River, as well as canoeing, tubing and fishing opportunities as well.

Dillsboro is also home to the Jackson County Green Energy Park (JCGEP) which utilizes clean, renewable energy resources to encourage economic development, provide environmental protection, and offer educational opportunities. The JCGEP captures methane gas from the old town landfill, then uses the gas as fuel for a series of artisan studios. Artists specialize in glass, blacksmithing/metal, ceramics, and more. JCGEP hosts a gallery, guided tours, a sculpture garden and Youth Arts Festival.

GLENVILLE

The Glenville community surrounds a large man-made lake with 26 miles of shore-line at 3,500 feet above sea level.

The lake is the highest of its size east of the Mississippi River and is a favorite place for aquatic recreation.

The community is settled along the

shores with several second hand vacation homes, boating businesses and small shops. The new Pines Recreation Area is a new addition to the area, with a beach and swimming area right on the lake.

There is a marina in Glenville and the Friends of Lake Glenville host fireworks every July.

SYLVA

Sylva is the county seat of Jackson, a retail and professional center where day-to-day services meet unique history.

The town’s development rose with the construction of the Western North Carolina Railroad in the 1880s. The Town of Sylva incorporated in 1889 and became the county seat in 1913.

On Feb. 28, 1914, the new Sylva courthouse, located on a hill overlooking Main Street, opened. In 2011, the structure was remodeled and re-opened hosting the Jackson County Public Library Complex and Genealogical Society. Today, the courthouse is reputed to be the most photographed in North Carolina.

Sylva has a population of 2,669 (2014) and sits at an elevation of 2,036 feet. Sylva averages about 51 inches of rain per year, nine inches of snow, an average high of 67.9 F and an average low of 42.8 F. In 2014, Sylva was named by “Where to Retire,” magazine as one of the greatest places to retire in the U.S., citing the reasonable cost of living and abundance of outdoor activities. Sylva has been a “Tree City USA in North Carolina,” for the last 12 years. Sylva is a Mountain Heritage Trout City as well.

Sylva is home to Pinnacle Park, a 1,100-acre property owned by the Town of Sylva that has beautiful waterfalls, streams, trails and vistas from the 5,008foot elevation pinnacle. Various entities and organizations in Sylva organize such annual festivals and events.

In 2016, Sylva was named among the 10 Cleanest Cities in America by the popular travel website Expedia.com. The 2017 (expected release) movie “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri,” was filmed in Sylva during the Spring of 2016.

Sylva was no stranger to Hollywood as the 1993 blockbuster “The Fugitive,” was partially filmed here.

Also in 2016, Sylva began the process to become the N.C. Trout Capital and an “ACT Work Ready Community.”

Sylva boasts a wide array of restaurants and now has four breweries in the downtown area. Sylva has three bookstores and an eclectic shopping experience featuring unique clothing, arts, crafts, jewelry, antiques and consignment stores.

Whiteside Mountain is located directly in between Cashiers and Highlands in the southern part of Jackson County. Whiteside Mountain offers majestic views to the east, south and west, along with hiking trails at an elevation of 4,931 feet. Nestled in the Western North Carolina mountains, the incorporated village maintains its unique setting, both environmentally and culturally, by fostering an active, friendly, and healthy community.

WEBSTER

The town of Webster is a quiet residential community situated on top of a hill overlooking the Tuckaseigee River.

It is situated just south of Sylva before entering Cullowhee.

The town was created in the mid-1800s with the purchase of an 18-acre tract specifically designated to become the county seat. Within a few years of its settlement, a courthouse was erected.

The town was incorporated in 1859.

During the construction of the Western North Carolina Railroad, county residents fully expected the railroad to run through Webster. However, the county’s state government representative — said to be fond of his drink — was taken aside at a crucial moment in the voting process and plied with liquor by an individual desiring a more direct route from Sylva to Dillsboro.

The location of the railroad later was

a primary factor in the movement to relocate the county seat from Webster to Sylva.

Today, the community is home to Southwestern Community College, many fly fishing opportunities along the Tuckaseigee River, (a Mountain Heritage Trout community) and a vibrant community board that recently renovated a World War II monument. A town logo and historic tour/trail was also created.

WHITTIER

Whittier, Jackson County’s closest community to Cherokee, was another railroad town.

The town was incorporated in 1907 and by 1913 boasted a dry store, hotel, physician and surgeon, plus sawmills, lumber yards, three churches and a school. However, with the Great Depression the town lost much of its industry as the demand for lumber declined.

By 1993 Whittier’s charter was repealed and today the community is mostly residential.

It is home to the Smoky Mountain Country Club.

fter a seven-year hiatus, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce proudly brought fireworks back to downtown Sylva in 2015. The fireworks will return for a third year in a row on July 4, 2017.

This year’s special event will feature a spectacular concert by one of the area’s finest bands followed by an impressive fireworks show when the sun goes down.

The fireworks will be shot from property in the Sunrise Park district donated for use

by Wayne Smith.

“We owe Wayne a huge thank you for allowing us to shoot fireworks from his property,” said Jackson County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Julie Hooper Spiro. “People will be able to see them from all over downtown Sylva.”

There will be food and fun for all ages at this family-friendly celebration.

known as the Jackson Industrial Education Center, the college opened on Dec. 1, 1964, as a unit of Asheville-Buncombe Technical Institute.

some of the best trout waters anywhere and is home to the nation’s first fly fishing trail - the Western North Carolina Fly Fishing Trail.

The trail maps out 15 prime spots to catch brown, rainbow and brook trout in the crystal-clear streams of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Visitors had long recognized Jackson County as a premier destination for fly fishing, but

often times weren’t exactly sure where to cast a line. So, the trail was created in 2009 to guide anglers to our best fishing locations.

Whether you’re looking for wide-open rivers or secluded mountain streams, the WNC Fly Fishing Trail has you covered. The trail website – www.FlyFishingTrail.com

– provides a map for download, descriptions and GPS coordinates for all 15 spots, plus a gallery for users to upload photos of their catches. It also includes a weekly fishing report.

The centerpiece of the trail, and of Jackson County fishing in general, is the Tuckaseigee River. It is the

county’s largest body of water, flowing some 40 miles from southeast to northwest. It has been referred to as “Western North Carolina’s best trout stream for fly anglers,” by The Charlotte Observer.

In 2016, the Jackson County Chamber of Commerce spearheaded an effort to become the official Trout Capital of N.C. In June of 2016, legislators on both the N.C. House and Senate floors approved a resolution

Jackson has 31 public access points for fishing; supports fishing classes for children, is home to the nation’s largest river cleanup day in the country; and plays host to its own chapter of Trout Unlimited.

There are now six retail fly shops and more than 25 guides in Jackson County.

Harrah’s Cherokee Casino and Resort’s community outreach programs focus on assisting health and wellness organizations, senior care, education, as well as organizations which promote diversity and civic improvement. In 2016, Harrah’s Cherokee Casino donated more than $190,000 to non-profits in Western North Carolina.

Harris Regional Hospital, along with its sister hospital in Swain County and outpatient facility in Franklin, provide stable employment for more than 900 people in WNC. As a community partner and tax-paying entity in Jackson County, Harris provides nearly $7 million annually in charity and uncompensated care, community benefit programs and local and state taxes.

In addition, Harris Regional Hospital has invested nearly $10 million in capital improvements and has an annual payroll of almost $51 million.

as much for the music that comes out of them as they are for their picturesque vistas, cascading waterfalls and alluring trails.

Some of the world’s finest musicians have come from Western North Carolina and that rich tradition carries on today.

Here in Jackson County, the Town of Sylva, Jackson County Parks and Recreation Department and Jackson County Chamber of Commerce team up to produce the Concerts on the Creek series at the Bridge Park gazebo in Sylva every Friday from 7-9 p.m., Memorial Day through Labor Day. Concerts on the Creek events are free and open to the public with donations encouraged. Bring a chair or blanket and enjoy the shows.
