The Hidden Story Symposium

This symposium explores hidden histories, secret identities, ghostly transmissions and how they have impacted national and personal memory, literature and psychoanalysis.
Aaron Rosen Ranging from Simeon Solomon in the 19th century to Lucian Freud in the 21st century, Jews have been at the forefront of modern British art. D.H. Lawrence recognised the special role which Jews have played in English art history when he wrote of Mark Gertler’s Merry-go-round (1916), “It is the best modern picture I have seen. It would take a Jew to paint this picture!” Surveying such titans as Isaac Rosenberg, David Bomberg, Frank Auerbach, and R.B. Kitaj, we will ask what these artists saw that even some of their greatest contemporaries missed.
Chaired by Professor Steph Frosh, Professor of Psychosocial Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London. With historian Richard Goldstein, English literature academic Leya Landau and writer and Jewish educator Amichai Lau-Lavie.

Nietzsche warned us about the death of God, and Jewish thinkers have always taken this seriously. It was well understood that the God we came to understand as children would not see us through adulthood in a meaningful way, that our thinking would need to become more rigorous and substantive as we matured.
It is said that a picture is worth a thousand words, and this has been dramatically proven throughout the Arab-Israel conflict in many a memorable and controversial cartoon.
God For Grown Ups
This course will work through this challenge, seeing how the Jewish God grew and developed in times ancient and modern, helped by thinkers such as Buber, Rosenzweig, Kaplan and Heschel.
Hagai Segal will look at the Arab-Israel conflict through the eyes of the cartoonists – British, European, American, Arab and Israeli – exploring the sometimes dramatic, sometimes funny and often offensive medium of the political cartoon past and present, and what these images tell us about perceptions of the rights and wrongs of the Arab-Israel conflict.

Whisky Tasting 8-9.30pm, £30 The Alice House Group This tasting event is a real treat for whisky lovers. The informal yet informative evening will guide you through the five main Scottish whisky regions, and will cover a brief history of whisky and how it is made, information on distillery techniques, and different types of cask maturation. This event will also, of course, include samples of five wonderful and complex whiskies.

Come Dine With Me in 1846: The Birth of the Victorian Anglo-Jewish Kitchen 8-9.30pm, £30 (demonstration) Rachel Davies and Maureen Kendler Join Rachel Davies and Maureen Kendler to taste the delights of Lady Judith Montefiore’s cookbook from 1846. Learn valuable lifestyle tips and tricks, as well as delicious recipes that frequented the dinner table from this Jewish manual that helped shape the lives of Jews across England. BalletFit 6-7pm, £15 per class or £90 for the course Rhiann Keys It’s official: ballet is good for you. This mat-based workout to music combines principles from ballet with exercises from pilates to develop core strength, good posture and healthy movement patterns. After just one hour, you’ll feel longer, leaner and stronger. Rhiann Keys is a former ballet dancer and a qualified pilates teacher. She’s taught clinical pilates, worked for the learning department at English National Ballet, pioneered a Back Care Scheme for city-based workers and taught ballet to children and adults.

Introduction to Jewellery Making
Hebrew Word Art: Megillah Esther
10am-1pm, ÂŁ40
7.30-9pm, ÂŁ60 for the course Avielah Barclay Sacred text meets the beauty of hand lettering. Using traditional Hebrew calligraphy and illuminations, create a unique piece of beautiful word art based on personal selections of verses from the biblical Book of Esther. This course is suitable for both beginners and those with calligraphy experience. Avielah Barclay is a traditionally trained ritual scribe, who was the first woman to receive this training in 250 years. She has recently completed an illuminated scroll of Esther.
Debbie Carlton This workshop will teach the techniques used to produce unique items of jewellery using polymer clay. This material can create beautiful intricate patterns and is hugely versatile, easy to use, with minimal equipment, suitable to be worked with in the home and studio. This taster class is perfect for beginners and will cover many techniques including: mixing colours, making basic canes, bead shapes, baking and finishing. Debbie Carlton is a jewellery designer and teacher, specialising in polymer and silver clay.
