August 20-September 30 Artists Reception, Sunday, Sept. 22, 11 a.m.-1 p.m. The High Holidays refer to the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah ("Jewish New Year") and Yom Kippur ("Day of Atonement"), by extension- the High Holidays refer to the period of ten days including those holidays, known also as the Ten Days of Repentance (Aseret Yemei Teshuvah). The Jewish New Year is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past Participating Artists: year and planning the changes to make in the New Year. The focus of this entire Robin Atlas period is the process of Teshuvah, or Ruhama Cohen repentance, whereby a Jew admits to sins, Fran Drosman asks for forgiveness, and resolves not to Cheryl Herbstman repeat the sins. Alison Hyman The High Holiday Art exhibition is a Seymour Lampert group exhibit, reflecting different artists’ perspective on this special time of year in Sherry Marger the Jewish Culture. HIDDEN AND REVEALED the spiritual aspects of Judaism

Artwork by Lynne Kaplan, Artist in residence, JCC School of Art October 1-November 25 Artist Reception Thursday, Oct. 10, 6-8 p.m.

Lynne's desire in her upcoming show, is to represent the Spiritual aspects of Judaism, through nonrepresentational means. There is a provocative parallel to this in the Jewish tradition, which prohibits the production of graven images. Judaism interprets this edict to mean that realistic portrayals of G-d are forbidden. (The Biblical idea is that Man is created in the image of G-d)

Fascinated by the possibilities of abstraction, Lynne explores several Jewish themes and ideas, using a variety of mediums. She will also be presenting magnificent fused glass pieces which are all hand made and each one, only one of a kind.

Our goal is to build a strong foundation and nurture a joy of lifelong learning. We offer programs for children six weeks old through Transitional Kindergarten. CURRICULUM: Our curriculum is founded upon the richness of Judaic tradition and values and is deeply inspired by the theories and philosophies of the schools of Reggio Emilia, Italy. This philosophy of early learning maintains a strong focus on children’s academic development through an approach that fosters a love for literacy, math and science. Each day we provide opportunities for social, emotional, physical and cognitive growth that prepare children for kindergarten readiness. In our small class sizes, children develop research, inquiry and critical thinking skills. Children construct meaning from their learning environments which seamlessly blend the richness of Jewish values, traditions and holiday celebrations into our early childhood education. JCC preschoolers and their families have access to an unparalleled facility and all the benefits of the entire Merage JCC, including indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, swimming pools and spacious grounds. Through creative hands-on experiences, our children embark on a journey from home to kindergarten. Our programs are designed and based upon the most recent research in brain development and are founded upon cutting edge child development. We know that children learn and progress as they grow and develop new skills and ways of thinking and perceiving. In our stimulating classroom environment our children are encouraged to embark on an exploration of concepts, gain awareness and understanding of literacy and numeracy, and become more articulate, confident individuals.

Transitional Kindergarten is a very exciting time in your child’s school experience. “TK” at the Merage JCC is designed for children who either “just miss” or “just make” the cut-off for Kindergarten entrance, but would benefit more from a small class size and enhanced curriculum in this year. Our TK program is taught by experienced Kindergarten teachers and offers the gift of an added or enhanced year for children who fall on the “cusp” of entry into elementary school. Children are prepared to continue on to Kindergarten or a first grade upon completion of the TK program. Our program focuses energy on building a strong classroom community based on mutual respect and fostering social-emotional growth in each child. Over the course of the TK year, your child will dive deep into literacy and math and science explorations, learning key concepts through a variety of lenses. The children will strengthen their relationships with the alphabet, build a solid foundation of reading skills, and expand their understand of the purpose of writing and varying forms of communication. Math will focus on developing strong numeracy skills and problem-solving from multiple perspectives. The TK community of learners will use experiences in the real world to examine and interpret their academic and socialemotional understanding. In our small class sizes of 18 students to 2 teachers, children actively research, inquire and think critically about the world around them. While our academic standards are fixed goals we are working towards during the Transitional Kindergarten year, our school’s philosophy is to have a flexible inquiry-based curriculum that is guided by a series of research questions. At the heart of everything we do is the ultimate goal of fostering curious, creative, and critical thinkers.
