Welcome to this sacred journey of power and purpose during the Season of Lent 2023! As followers of Jesus Christ, we are equipped with power from the Holy Spirit and designated with a divine purpose in life by God the Creator.
The Season of Lent is a time of consecration through fasting, repentance, self-reflection, increased prayer, and fervent study of the Word of God. Lent begins with Ash Wednesday (this year, February 2) and lasts forty days (not including the Sundays) until Easter Day.
Sundays are excluded because this is the day we remember Jesus’ resurrection. Every Sunday is a little celebration of Easter and thus a time of joy.
In 2015 the Young Adult Pastors of the Seventh Episcopal District (State of South Carolina) of the African Methodist Episcopal Church came together to compile a Lenten Devotional Guide to help our congregations deepen, strengthen, and enhance their relationships with God. These devotionals are practical and relevant to our daily lives.
In the booklet, we compiled fresh, empowering devotionals (Monday – Friday) written by anointed, young adult pastors in our Episcopal District with the objective of spiritually equipping us with greater power and focused purpose in our lives.
During this journey of power and purpose, we reserved Saturdays and Sundays as days of special prayer, consecration, and personal reflection.
Our goal now is to use this booklet as a Sankofa moment where we look back to look forward. The words and text have not changed, however all of our congregations are different, the Word has not changed.
In conclusion, we offer praise to God and thanks for the sacrifice and hard work to the Young Adult Clergy in developing this Lenten Devotional. We also praise God for our families and local church for their support. Lastly, we are thankful to God for the African Methodist Episcopal Church for giving us opportunities for to serve and display our gifts and graces in ministry.

All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being.
John 1:3Modest and Pure. Real and Inspiring. Holy and Righteous. Loving and Kind. Compassionate and Forgiving. Extraordinary and Supernatural. Needed and Requested. Required and Fulfilling. Healing and Delivering. Reproving and Teaching. Historical and Proven. Alive and Active. Victorious and Infallible. Worshipped and Adored. Returning and Reigning! These are impressive descriptions of someone. Who is this man?
This man is the Jesus the Christ, Savior of the World! John’s Gospel provides clear evidence that Jesus is the Son of God and that by believing in him we may have an abundant life today and everlasting life beyond death. This Gospel also shares with us that everything created came into being through Jesus and without him nothing would exist. This is an amazing statement of truth! We live, move, and have our being through the person of Jesus, the source of life.
During this Lenten season, we will be reflecting upon Jesus as the One who gives us life abundant and eternal. This is a life that exceeds our limited expectations. It is a life that gives us power, purpose, and fulfillment.
With Jesus, our lives are satisfying. Without Jesus, our lives are void and hollow. Make a commitment today to become a fully devoted follower of Jesus Christ. Embrace the creator of everything because he lovingly created you. This man is worth knowing and we invite you to sojourn with Christ during this Season of Lent.
Prayer
God our Creator, I thank you for the gift of new life in Jesus. Give me the love and courage to share that gift through my words and deeds through Christ our Redeemer. Amen.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:14Historically in movies and television landlords are often portrayed as being meddlesome and misunderstanding. Frankly, if many of us entrusted a tenant with our property we probably would be also. But, as we read the first chapter of John this is not the image we develop of Jesus, the only son of God who would come to Earth and suffer for the sins of humanity. John the author, conveys that God took a different approach in reaching us. He didn't simply come to check on his property. He came to see about you and I, the crown of his creation. He moved into the neighborhood to spend time with creation as he redeemed it. By moving in, a transformation occurred. The arrival of Christ in the flesh was a revelation that could not be duplicated. It was a way for us to see and experience God's glory and encounter his grace fully in truth. Certainly one could think that God has more important things to do than to be concerned with the daily lives of you and I, but not so, according to John. We are what God thinks about. The author of Psalm 115:12 reminds us of this by telling us, "The Lord has been mindful of us; He will bless us." [NRSV] Grace is what he provides to his tenants who at times do not always keep their end of the rental agreement. In His truth we discover that he came so that our quality of life would be better. Let us pray:
Gracious God,
Thank you for your son. We are reminded of your love for us as you came to be with us. May we be transformed in this season of Lent and the ways in which your truth will be revealed to us as we approach Easter. Help our hearts to remain steady and fixed on you. In Christ name we pray. Amen

"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full.”
Matthew 6:5As I peruse the pages of social media sites I am noticing so many persons have made the decision to give things up during this season of Lent. The idea of giving things up or rather fasting is a beautifully spectacular idea. Fasting is a true gift from God where the person fasting receives greater spiritual clarity and insight, but most of all, fasting is purposed to be a humbling experience. The person fasting enters into a partnership with God purposed to show God’s awesomeness in the midst of a chaotic world. I caution persons in the body of Christ to always remember why they are giving things up during this season of Lent. Your giving up is never purposed to be a weight loss initiative, nor is it purposed to be a time where you give up things that are ultimately detrimental to your Christ-like character for the truth of the matter is you should not have been participating in those activities previous to the fast (i.e., cussing, fighting, lying, gambling etc). Ultimately, when you give things up make sure it is God who gets the glory and not you.
I am encouraged to remind someone as we approach the Cross that even in the midst of your fasting you may experience an overwhelming sense to give up or throw in the towel. However, the word of the Lord that says the battle is not yours, it is the Lord (2 Chronicles 20:15) I think about the fact that I oftentimes find myself trying to fight in my own strength, when I should be relying on God’s strength. I am finding it is quite normal for people to automatically react out of themselves rather than adhering to the power and provision of God because of a natural spirit of discouragement. If you are going to sincerely fast in this season of Lent you need to be reminded validation never comes from people. Stop thinking about the failure and focus on the victory God has already laid in your pathway.

“Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?”
Mark 10:17B
A very familiar quote, “I’ve never seen a hearse pulling a U-Haul” has made its way in countless sermons, Church School lessons, Bible Study discussions, and spiritual conversations, magnifying the reality that material wealth is only temporary. In a world consumed by materialism, living in the finest home, driving the most luxurious car, and wearing the latest designer fashions, can cause one to be easily distracted, much like the rich young ruler in today’s text. While in the busyness of ministry, Jesus is approached by this rich young ruler who eagerly asks Him, “Good Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” Jesus presents him with a checklist of commands to be obeyed and the ruler confidently confesses his obedience to those commands. Jesus, a discerner of the heart, identified the stronghold that was running interference between the young ruler and eternal life and challenged him to sell all of his goods and give it to the poor. Sadly, this young ruler loved his material possessions and couldn’t part from them. If Jesus told you right now to sell all of your worldly possessions and give it to the poor, would you be able to obey? This young ruler wanted to earn his salvation on his own terms but Jesus was calling him to a life of humility and total surrender. Is there anything or anyone in your life that takes precedence over your relationship with God or demonstrating the love of Christ by helping our brothers and sisters in need? Just as Jesus identified the condition of this young rulers heart, we must honestly examine our hearts and prayerfully yield ourselves to a life of obedience and service and not be distracted that which is short-lived.
Prayer: “Father, I thank you for salvation and eternal life. Please condition my heart to walk in total obedience to you, that I may one day inherit eternal life.” In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:41One key characteristic that Jesus embodied was obedience. He was always in line with the plan he was sent to carry out. In John 6:38 Jesus states, “For I am come not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent me.” (NKJV). All of His actions recorded in scripture, the miracles, the sermons, the prayers, the parables, were a result of Jesus being obedient to the will of the Father.
In this season of repentance, reflection and renewal it should be our top priority to confidently carry out the will of God, no matter the cost. In this passage of scripture, Jesus gives an example of obedience that results in him being given the strength to do what he was sent to do.
The inclination of our flesh is more often than not take the easy way out, or at the very least, the least path of resistance. Being in God’s will is an awesome endeavor. However, when we consider the weight His will places on our shoulders, it can seem like we are not strong enough to do it. We feel as if we are in over our heads. We sometimes feel too small, weak and unprepared to carry our His will.
In his own psyche and flesh, Jesus is confronted with the desire to take another path. Several times, the text makes reference to Jesus being sorrowful and/or distressed. Notice what he does that results in him finding strength to do God’s will.
First, Jesus separates himself from his closest confidants. He also shares his inner most feelings with God the Father. In his prayers he completely opens up with statements of sincerity and honesty concerning what he has to do. Finally, he realizes that God’s will and God’s way is the best way. Read this passage in the gospel of Luke and you will find that in the middle of separation, sincere prayer and realization, God sent angles to minster and strengthen him.

Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.
John 15:4John shares with us today that when God, the gardener finds branches in his garden that are bringing forth fruit- that God prunes those trees. God cuts the productive branches so he can bring forth even more fruit. We would think that if we were bringing forth fruit, that we would get a promotion in the garden, that if we’re doing good then we’d get some extra fertilizer- we’d get watered a little more than the other vines- our way of thinking says that because we’ve brought God this, that and the other, we can retire in peace now and just be shade in the garden but God says those branches in my church that do good- those branches in my church that are talented- those branches in my church that I can count on- I’m going to prune those branches- I’m going to cut them so that they can bring forth more fruit. The challenge for today is to keep the faith when God prunes you- know, believe and remember that God knows what he’s doing and after you have suffered a little while, the God of all peace will restore you, promote you and strengthen you. Pray then, when folks roll their eyes. Preach then, when they won’t accept your word. Sing then, when they tune you out- allow God to cut you- allow God to trim you- allow God to prune you until that great day that you look around and your devotion to Christ and his church has produced more fruit than any of us could have ever imagined.
Prayer: God we thank you for not cutting us off. We thank you for pruning us so that we may be more excellent witnesses for you. Grant us wisdom, courage, knowledge and understanding of your plan, your work, your will and your way. Help us to hold on and hold out in the pruning process. AMEN
Thursday,
March
And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, “Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!”
Luke 8:25bI’ve always admired the ocean. It always amazes me to see the waves come crashing into the coast. I even enjoy standing in the water and playing as the waves come inland. As much as I love playing in the ocean, I have learned to respect the power of the ocean. Those same waves that I enjoy playing in have proven that they have the power to overcome me. I’ve learned not to go too far out without having someone to help me.
In this passage, Jesus and the disciples set out to sea, and while they are traveling a storm arises. The waves frighten the disciples, and they go into a panic. This probably wasn’t the first time the disciples had seen a storm at sea, but they still find themselves overcome with fear. They cry out to Jesus, who is asleep. This is the only time in scripture that mentions Jesus being asleep. The disciples speak doom and gloom to their situation. Jesus awakens from His sleep, silences the wind, and calms the sea.
After speaking peace to the storm, Jesus asked a simple, yet powerful question: “Where is your faith?” Isn’t it amazing that the disciples, who believed Jesus was the long awaited Messiah, seemed to have more faith in the storm that in the Christ? How often do we put more faith in our crisis that we do in our Christ? Each time we worry, panic, or allow fear to overcome us, we give our problems more credit that we do our Savior. While fear is a human emotion, we must also remember that we have a Divine presence with us at all times, and He is always ready to step in and deliver us.
Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”
Over the last decade advanced technology have given us as a society the power to increase our intellect, expand our horizons, and go where no man has gone before. Simply beyond the positive aspects of what technology brings to the forefront it still creates challenging issues to our everyday lives. One particular issue that we face from the various facets of technology is identity fraud. From Facebook to Instagram and other social media outlets many people create false realities of themselves in order to fit in with the outside world. Harmless as this may seem to the untrained eye, problems such as theft arise when imaginary worlds are lived out as reality. People who choose to live out their imaginary worlds as their own, lose the very essence of who they are as God created them to be. We must realize that our God given identities helps us access the very things that make us special and unique. Jesus in the text gives us the primary example of staying true to himself no matter the circumstance. Jesus could have made the decision to deny his true identity during Pilates questioning but he told the truth anyhow. Jesus understood that if he denied himself, he would have denied his father, and all those who came to save. Simply Jesus teaches us that our identities are more than just what our parents named us at birth, but it carries those who poured into our lives and the divine purpose were supposed to live out. Let us all be challenged to live out our lives as God called us to be…..authentic.
Lord help us to be real with you, ourselves and all those that we come in contact with in Jesus name we pray. AMEN

He who believes in the Son has everlasting life;
John 3:36aDuring these forty days of reflection I encourage you to meditate on what you believe and why you have this belief. As Christians our beliefs include but are not limited to: the Holy Trinity, life after death and a place called Heaven and a place called Hell. John 3:36 tells us that in order to receive eternal life we MUST believe in Jesus. Believing in Jesus means we know that when we’re ready to give up and throw in the towel Jesus gives us the strength to go on. Believing in Jesus means that when the doctor has given up you know that Jesus has the power to heal. Believing in Jesus means that regardless of what you’ve been through, or what you’re currently going through or what you’re about to face you know that Jesus will make a way. We must believe in Jesus because despite our shortcomings, our faults and our sins Jesus continues to forgive us and gives us another opportunity for salvation. We must believe in Jesus so we can have eternal life. We must believe in Jesus so Heaven can be our final home. So if you’re asked why do you believe in Jesus you can boldly declare as the songwriter wrote “God has already done so much for me He’s opened doors I could not see I’ll keep on trusting His word is true Cause He’s already done what He said He would do.”
You search the Scriptures, for in them you think you have eternal life; and these are they which testify of Me.
John 5:39This day Lord, let me be a living witness. Grant me strength to take the stand and proclaim your salvific power to the world. Help me when I stumble over my words, and when I stammer in the face of adversity. Grant me strength to live a life that pleases you. Bless me as I bless you. This day Lord, let me be a living witness. Amen
In a courtroom, a man or woman cannot be a witness for themselves. Their account of the case would be considered invalid if not for the witness of another. Jesus profoundly makes the claim that the scriptures are witness to His truth and power. Today, the courtroom of life will call you to the stand. You will be called to give an account of your life, your love, and your testimony of the goodness of Christ. There are some who will see your praise as invalid, but praise God anyhow. There are those that will call objections to the truth of the Gospel, but today, you must still remember to profess your story. The world would see fit to hold you in contempt because of your mistakes; however, you still have to uphold the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth of the salvific power of Christ! Your life is a living scripture, revealing the truth of God to those who would read your pages. Though some would see your testimony and faith as lacking, Christ stands on your behalf as the One true Witness! Today will be filled with challenges, yet and still, you are a viable witness to the power of God. Others will watch as you take the stand and remain praiseful to the one who is praiseworthy! Those who hear your exclamations today may ask where your evidence can be found. Remind them to search the scriptures for the love of God, search them and find the Prince of Peace!

Simon Peter answered him, “Lord, to whom can we go?
You have the words of eternal life.
John 6:68While traveling this Christian journey of life there are things that would make a person want to turn around. Often times those could be different issues that we have to face day after day, and really do not know how to deal with them. Then there are times when we want to turn around, because the things that we are face we just do not understand them. My brothers and sister even when we cannot understand where God is trying to take us in life, don't turn around because God is the one who holds the key to where we are trying to go. Just like what is happing here in our chosen pericope for today. In our chosen pericope Jesus has given instructions and some of his disciples could not believe what Jesus was teaching them, so some of them turned back and no longer traveled with him. There were some of the disciples that in spite of their colleagues truing around, they knew and understood that they could go where they are trying to go without Jesus. As we continue this forty day journey of Lenten of power and purpose don't allow anything to turn you around. This journey might get rough it might get tough but don't turn around. When we know that we are on the journey with Jesus as our guide, we have to understand that Jesus has given us the power to reach the purpose that Jesus has for us.
Prayer: God thank you for who you are. God as we continue this journey, give us the strength to keep pressing forward even when the ones close to us turn around. Amen.

The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.
John 10:10The season of lent is a time believers prepare before Resurrection Sunday. It is an opportunity for reflection, repentance, prayer and fasting. This is the season; I refer to as “growing in grace” because our personal relationship with God is vitally important to our faith walk. The scripture lesson in the Gospel of John reminds us of the greatest act of grace ever performed. Only Jesus willingly went upon a shameful cross and took the sting out of death for humanity. Jesus loved, taught, healed, directed, and elevated persons who had no identity in Him. He is the Good Shepherd that warned us of the thief that is lurking, waiting patiently to steal, kill, and destroy what He gave to us. For, He gave us life and He wants us to live it abundantly. In order for us to live abundantly, we must watch out for the thief. The thief that wants to destroy our hopes and dreams; the thief that wants to steal our joy; the thief that wants to claim our life. The thief may attack at any time and we have to prepare ourselves by suiting up with the Full Armor of God. He cannot penetrate the God’s armor. The belt of truth keeps us from being vulnerable and exposed. The breastplate of righteousness keeps our heart pure for God. The Gospel of peace is our protection reminding us of our salvation. The Shield of faith protects us from the thief’s fiery darts. The helmet of salvation protects our mind from condemnation. The sword of the spirit is the only offensive weapon because it is the Word of God. It is sharper than any two-edged sword. Now that you are ready, live abundantly, and watch out for the thief.
“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.”
John 7:37b-38
Can you remember a time when you met someone of importance or influence and it changed your life? People are often star struck when meeting a hero or celebrity. They often say that their life is changed in some dramatic way. But how are they changed? When we meet people in our daily lives who may be impacted by our influence, do we seek to make a difference for the better? In this passage Jesus invites those who have a thirst for something greater in life to meet him. When we meet him he touches our hearts, our very core. Jesus makes us better. Out of our hearts flow the wisdom and insight to bless others as we have been blessed. In changing us he gives us the tools to use to help change the world around us also. The change comes through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. Our challenge is to have a thirst or desire for Christ so great that when we encounter him we are changed from the inside out. John says that some who heard his words found it hard to understand. Likewise, some will not always understand our testimony about how our lives have been changed by him. As with some people of that time, their natural eyes look at where he came from to confirm that he would meet their needs, instead of what the eyes of their hearts could see.
We thank you for how you have met us on this Lenten journey. Thank you for seeing beyond our broken exteriors and speaking to our hearts. As you touch our lives may we reach the river of spiritual overflow that leads to abundant life. You've loved us despite the moments we have come up short. Thank you for growth. In Jesus' name we offer this prayer, Amen.

For as the Father raises the dead and gives life to them, even so the Son gives life to whom He will.
John 5:21Boy! He has really done it this time. Jesus, at this time better known simply as a man from Nazareth, has made a lame man walk! The problem is that it happened on a Sabbath. The Jewish leaders were really looking to persecute a man that day. First, they got on the lame for picking up his mat and walking. Now, they are on Jesus for healing on a Sabbath. In defense, Jesus tells them that He work as His Father always works. This really set things off. He practically made Himself equal to God. Something that Jews just did not do.
That is where we come to today’s passage: John 5:19-30. In this passage, Jesus further explains His relationship with the one true God. Jesus was not simply a man from Nazareth. He was not just another teacher. He was not just another prophet of God. Oh no! He was more. Jesus, who walked in flesh through Jerusalem that day, was God Himself. Everything Jesus did was in sync with the Father. Even more, greater works will come through this Jesus whom they thought was just a man. Just as God raise the dead, see the Son will as well. Yes, He is to raise Lazarus, the widow’s son, and the ruler’s daughter, but even greater is to come.
It is through this not so regular man from Nazareth that our dead souls are given life. Overtaken by sins, we were certain to be counted as dead, helpless by any other means and destined for eternal separation from God. However this Jesus, God Himself in flesh, sacrificed His life in order to give life to those who believe in Him. No, this was not simply a man, this was God!

For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.
John 6:33I am remind of one of my brothers who is a average bread lover. I can never forget one day we went out to eat, and as we sat down to order our food my brother looked at the young lady who was waiting our table, and said, "Can I please have some bread." When the young lady brought the bread to the table my brother said out loud with excitement, "Thank you for the bread." It is with that same excitement that we ought to give thanks to God for the true bread that comes to give life. In our chosen pericope Jesus reminds the people that he is the true bread of life that God sent to give life to the world. I don't know about you but that is enough for me to give God thanks for the bread of life. As we go through life we can tell everybody thank you for everything else, but don't take the time to say thank you God for the bread of life. Thank you that he came that I might have the right to the tree of life. My brothers and sister as we continue this forty days of lent power and purpose don't forget to tell God thank you for the bread of life. We thank God for the bread of life because, it is the bread of life we are where we are today. We thank God because this bread of life is what keeps us when we cannot keep ourselves.

"I am”
Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM.”
There are times on the journey when our faith in the Triune God will be challenged, tested, and tried but we can find courage and strength through the life and ministry of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who passed every test that came in His way. In the midst of the busyness of ministry, Jesus experienced attacks from religious leaders who would interrogate Him with the intent of trying to make Him contradict His teachings. In today’s passage, we meet Jesus as these religious leaders challenge His claim as Messiah. The religious leaders called Jesus a Samaritan and even called him a devil, persistently trying to provoke him. Rather than giving in, Jesus remained focused on the truth of who His Father is and affirming His relationship with His Father by declaring, “Before Abraham was, I am.”
Every day our faith in God is under pressure, however we must hold fast to the truth found in our “I am.” The enemy will try to feed us with his lies, especially when our life is filled with so many questions but as we rest in “I am”, we can rest assure that our God is the God of all flesh and there’s nothing too hard for Him to do as recorded in Jeremiah 32:27. God’s love is everlasting, His mercy and truth endures to all generations and He faithfully promised to be everything we need Him to be in this life. Let us be intentional in safeguarding our time that we won’t waste time entertaining the enemy but we will invest our time in growing in our relationship with “I am.” As we grow, our faith will increase and we will experience salvation, deliverance, healing, breakthroughs, and victory through “I am.”
Prayer: Father, thank you for being everything we need you to be in this life. Thank you for allowing the life of your Son Jesus to be a relevant example for us. Help us to rest in the promises of “I am” and stand on the truth of who you are. In Jesus name. Amen.
From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day.
Matthew 16:21If you can have any super power, what would it be? This question has been asked many times. I am sure you have been asked it as well. Some people would choose to fly, while others would choose to read minds, have super strength, or manipulate time. For me, one of the scarier powers is predicting the future. Sometimes knowing what is to come is a bit chilling and nerve wracking. This is why I cannot help but to think whether or not Jesus felt this same way.
Being the Divine, Jesus knew of what His mission here on earth involved. He knew that an immense period of suffering, even unto death, was on its way. In Matthew 20:17-19, Jesus clearly predicts His death a third time. In private, He took His disciples aside and once more explains how in Jerusalem He will be delivered over to the chief priest and scribes. They will sentence Him to death, where Gentiles will scorn, torment, and crucify Him. Oh how dreadful that must have been to know. However, He knew there was a greater good resulting from his sufferings.
The list of predictions did not stop with human’s last enemy, death. In self-denial, Jesus looked pass His suffering and saw the victory over death. Jesus saw His resurrection. He saw that the veil of separation between God and His children was to be torn, giving us access to the Father. Meditate on what all that entails. Now that’s what I call super power!
Prayer: Thank you for your Son Jesus Christ and the great sacrifice given. Lord, there is no greater power than your resurrection power. Amen!

“Therefore My Father loves Me, because I lay down My life that I may take it again.
John 10:17Divided and confused, the Jews were searching for words to describe Jesus. Some cried out that He was demon-possessed and raving mad. Others thought, since when can a demon open the blind’s eyes? All of this was brought on because once again, Jesus was healing. Well, how would you describe Jesus? Two great answers can be found where Jesus describes himself. Two answers that may come off as contradicting at first, but allow me to explain. A great way to describe Him is as a shepherd and a lamb.
The Lamb – No other animal is mentioned in the Bible as many times as sheep and lambs. They were very important to the Hebrew people during the Bible times. Though the followers of Christ are described as sheep, the Word also describe Jesus as a lamb. It was through the sacrifice of unblemished lambs that God’s people were forgiven of their sins. Likewise, it is through the sacrifice of the ultimate Holy Lamb of God that our sins are forgiven.
The Shepherd - Shepherding was not only one of the oldest professions, but also one of the most unclean professions, according to the Law. Yet, this was one profession God worked through greatly in the Bible. For instance, it was shepherds who first received the word that Jesus the Messiah was born. Also, here in John 10, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd. It is a Good Shepherd who would lay down His life for his poor defenseless sheep. As poor defenseless sheep, it was the Good Shepherd Jesus Christ, who knows us and laid down His life for us.
Prayer: Lord, help us to grasp the greatness of who Jesus is to us. Help us to understand Him as being the Lamb that was sacrificed for our sin. Help us to know Him as our Great Shepherd. Thank you Lord, for being it all. Amen.

“But God raised him up, having freed him from death, because it was impossible for him to be held in its power.”
Acts 2:24
As we sojourn with Jesus during this Lenten Season, we are reminded by God’s word of the power of resurrection. During our journey with Jesus to the cross and empty tomb, our faith shouts with exceeding joy for victory in a conquering Savior. Yes, Jesus possessed the power to get up!
In Luke’s historical analysis of the early church in the Book of Acts (Acts of the Holy Spirit), Peter spoke forthrightly about the resurrection of Jesus from the dead. In Peter’s sermon, he expressed the importance of the finished work of Jesus’ death and resurrection to cure humanity’s greatest deficiency (the power of sin). Jesus Christ is God's only provision for man's sin. Through Him we can know and experience God's love and plan for our lives.
Through our profession of faith and receiving Christ into our hearts, the power of God (the person of the Holy Spirit) assumes residency within us. Therefore, imparting the same power that resurrected Jesus from the dead within the new believer.
This is exciting news! We have the power to get up! Several years ago, President Barack Obama popularized the phrase “Yes, We Can!” Yes, we have access to Jesus who will give us “the power to get up! Therefore, in the power of Jesus’ name and his shed blood, get up from sin, past hurts, low living, sight walking, small planning, laziness, excuses, mundane talking, and negative people.
In Jesus, we have the power to get up! If we fall or fail, we still have power to get up again. Today, Get up and walk in the power that God has ordained for your life.
Lord of life, I praise your holy name. Empower me with strength, faith, and endurance to get up and live abundantly through you. Amen.

Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “Talitha, cumi,” which is translated, “Little girl, I say to you, arise.” Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age.
Mark 5:41-42a
There is a great hymn sung in many churches entitled “Blessed Assurance”. The refrain simply says, “This is my story, this is my song, praising my Savior all the daylong”. We were created to praise because God is good. The story presented in Mark 5 is one of faith. Jairus was a synagogue leader frantically needing Jesus to look beyond his faults and seek to his need. He needed help because his daughter was sick and dying. She needed a miracle and her father sought out his only answer, Jesus the Christ. Many local synagogue leaders in that time did not believe Jesus was the Son of God. The scripture does not advise if Jairus was a believer but it did reveal he was father desperate to save his little girl. Then the most paralyzing words spoken, “your daughter is dead”. What was this father to do? The naysayers were talking. Jairus had stepped out on faith and now he needed to stand on faith. Jesus did not say a word to the naysayers but He assured the distressed father by these words, “Just trust me” (5:36). He called his inner circle and they went to the girl. A miracle happened and it was a blessed assurance of all who witnessed death to life. My brothers and sisters we can meditate on the assurances of God because He is the author and finisher of our faith. We can have the blessed assurance because Jesus died on the cross. We can have the blessed assurance because Jesus rose from the dead. We can have the blessed assurance that one day he will return for us. It is because of what He’s already done that we can have the blessed assurance that Jesus is ours.
Prayer: Father in the Jesus name, show us who you are in the time of our need. We praise and thank you. Amen

Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.”
So he who was dead sat up and began to speak.
Luke 7:14b-15
Lord, today we call upon your power to breathe new life into our plans. We ask that you empower us with miraculous faith, glorious strength, and powerful resolve. Help us to never give up, no matter what lies before us. Lord, breathe in us new life, new perspective, and new purpose. Amen
You thought your greatest dreams had already died away. You watched as your plans fell apart before your very eyes. Your hopes for a prosperous future seem to have slipped through your grasp. You must know that Jesus has seen your fears. He has watched you birth your dreams and goals into something beautiful. He has seen your faith, and He has watched as you fell victim to a senseless world. Even now, as you have considered those plans to have died long ago, Jesus has come to bring life to your faith! He has compassion on you today not because of anything you have done, but because you are a believer who may lose faith in their dreams from time to time, but NEVER in God! Be reminded that your heart’s desires, and your greatest love is rekindled in Christ. Just when you think that there is nothing left that you can do, Christ reminds you of the power of faith and compassion. All that remains is your trust in Jesus, your love for life, and the passion that God placed in your heart. Your greatest goals are your calling and ministry. Never give up! Even when your ideals have been placed on the funeral bier of doubt, and carried by the pallbearers of naysaying, backbiting, faithless complaint, and fear; Jesus will give new life to them! Today, remember that Jesus Christ, the great composer of compassion has come to give you renewed life! Take hold of your faith and be ready now to witness feats of impossibility! What is impossible for the world is possible for God!

I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing.
John 15:5The utmost desire of every Christian should be to glorify God. That means that the sum of our lives should point to God and God alone. The calling God has placed on the life of every Christian is ultimately to bring Him glory. The measure of faith that every person has, was placed within them to give God glory. The money we make, the way we talk, the manner in which we carry ourselves at work, our relationships, all that we do and have should be to give God glory. From Adam down to the infant that is being born right now, we were made to give God glory.
Isaiah 43: 7 is very clear about why we are here. God says “Bring all who claim me as their God, for I have made them for my glory. It was I who created them.” You were created to give God glory.
If we are living lives that glorify God, the proof will be in the fruit that we produce. The easiest way to distinguish what kind of tree or plant that you are looking at is to identify the fruit that’s growing on it. God wants us, as His children, to be fruitful.
The question is how are we to be fruitful. The answer is quite simple: Abide in Jesus. Six times in this passage Jesus uses the word abide. The Greek word for abide is MENO which literally means to remain and not depart. In order for us to be branches that grow fruit that glorify God we must remain in him and never depart.
The key to remaining in God and not departing is found in verse 7 where Jesus teaches that it is his word that enables us to remain. The power to stay close to God is in the word of God. When we place his word on hearts, then Jesus promises the “the Father will be glorified and we will bear much fruit.” In order to be fruitful we must remain in the word.
When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory.
Colossians 3:4
Quite often people are criticized for having nice things. A large home, a luxurious vehicle, a sizable bank account, fine clothes and shoes and the list goes on and on. This criticism usually comes from those on the outside looking in who know nothing about the person or persons that have these nice things. There is nothing wrong with being successful, achieving your goals, and being blessed beyond measure. The issue comes when we believe that we are solely responsible for all of our nice things therefore we don’t give God His rightful praise. We pray before the job interview but we don’t give praise once we’re hired. We pray that our financing will be approved but we don’t give praise after we’ve made the purchase. We pray while studying for an exam but we don’t give praise after we’ve made an A. Unfortunately success is often frowned upon because we praise and worship material things when we should be thanking, praising, and worshipping God for blessing us with these things. We know that God will supply all of our needs but when God goes above and beyond and gives us more than we ever could have imagined we need to look up and say thank you. As we fast during this Lent season let’s shift our focus from material living to Holy living. Let’s focus on our charitable giving and not on what we can receive. Let’s focus on pleasing Christ and not on pleasing man. Jennie Wilson said it best when she penned “Build your hopes on things eternal Hold to God’s Unchanging Hand.”

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received:
1 Corinthians 15:3a
When growing up as a child I have always had a love for reading detective stories. These stories gave me a thrill for solving complex problems in which the writer presented for their avid readers. My favorite mystery book series is Sherlock Holmes written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Sherlock Holmes was a mystery detective who solved crimes with his trusted partner and longtime friend Watson. Sherlock and Watson went on many adventures together solving murders, theft, political corruption, and missing persons. The reason why I loved Sherlock Holmes so much was his unique ability to find the culprit no matter what the crime may be. One particular story I can recall is when Sherlock and Watson was trying to find the great jewel thief. In this story the thief, who turned out to be her butler, had stolen a blue sapphire necklace adorned with diamonds, which belonged to a wealthy duchess. The thief was very cunning at the scene of the crime because he left no finger prints or traces that could connect him to the crime. Simply after a thorough investigation that included a photogenic memory and an eye witness testimony, Sherlock and Watson solved their case by finding the necklace in the butler’s room safe. Paul in the text reminds us that sometimes in life we will doubt the very nature of Christ and begin to construct a mystery within our own minds. Paul reminds the Corinthians that Jesus proof was always in the pudding we just have to seek the right answers. Paul lets us know that in order to solve our conceptualized mysteries we must look to scripture for answers. Simply scripture gives light to the proof of not only what we need to know, but it gives light to the ultimate truth, of Jesus dying on the cross for our sins and risen to live forever.

But they constrained Him, saying, “Abide with us, for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent.”
Luke 24:29a
Several years ago I started a task that God had assigned to my hands. I was excited about fulfilling the vision. As the project was getting underway, I had a seasoned pastor who is one of my mentors tell me the difficulties that would come with the project. He told me of the unforeseen challenges that would arise, and even warned me of the discouragement I would feel during the process. He also told me that ultimately the vision would come to pass, and I would be better for it. Even after hearing what this pastor told me, I can honestly say that I was still overwhelmed, and even surprised by the way things played out. Everything he told me happened, yet I was still caught off guard at times.
In this passage, we find two followers of Christ who had a similar experience to mine. They thought Jesus was the Messiah they had been waiting for, but after seeing Him crucified and buried, they doubted His Messianic Authority. They’ve heard that Jesus’ body is missing, and even got the message that the angel said Jesus was alive! Jesus comes and walks with them (even though they don’t recognize Him at first.) After inquiring what was wrong with them, Jesus reminds them that the prophets clearly predicted the Messiah would suffer before entering His glory. Finally, the next morning they realize they’ve been with Jesus.

And He said to them, “Why are you troubled? And why do doubts arise in your hearts?
Luke 24:38
In a world of uncertainties, one thing that you and I can always hang our hat on is that Jesus keeps his promises…Jesus keeps all of his promises. It makes sense for us to question our banker- it makes sense for us to question our supervisor- it makes sense even at times for us to question our family members and our spouses- but when Jesus gives us his word, at the very moment that Jesus gives his word- all discussion- all question- all discomfort and all confusion must cease. The disciples had witnessed Jesus do great things and even when Jesus was healing sick and raising dead and casting out demons, he always gave them a preview of coming attractions- Jesus was always letting them know that they would see (and even perform) greater works than even the great miracles that they witnessed in their presence. Jesus then told them that he would die, told them that he would be buried and told them that he would rise again from the dead but somehow when he does what he says he would do, the disciples had the gall to be surprised, startled and shocked according to the scriptures.

“Then said Jesus to them again. Peace be unto you: as my Father has sent me, even so send I you. And when he said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.”
I’ve discovered if God does certain things for you at certain points in your life, especially those points when you are not mature enough to handle them, it is like giving a 12 ounce steak to a newborn baby and expected the child to eat. Jesus’ life and ministry ought to serve as a lesson in divine timing. Jesus knew even those closest to him, the disciples, were not always in sync with His timing. Yet, Jesus exposed them to certain things to test the faith they had working in them. One need only look at the events that transpired after the Resurrection to realize timing is important to the message of Christ.
Many times in your life you have received the divine commission to obtain the things you seek in your life, yet and still, when you ought to be out “doing” you are hiding and cowering in the corners of life afraid to reach your destiny. Ministries, books, positions, careers, businesses and relationships, just to name a few, have yet to be birthed because you haven’t taken your turn. In God’s timing, one has to understand that Jesus will speak not only peace, but He will speak blessings and provision into your situation.
Don’t wait for someone to hand you the position, but you take it knowing God has predestined your success. Pray and believe that it’s not only my time, but it’s my turn to make an impact in my world. Become the true essence of change you seek and then, and only then, will you have the kind of peace that surpasses this world!
Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Matthew 28:19-20I believe that when we look at our world today that we can understand that there is work to be done. When we turn on the news and see people are losing their life to crimes and even to the ones who is suppose to be protecting us. When people cannot even get along to make our world a better place, we see that there is work to be done. So in our chosen pericope Jesus gives us our job description. Jesus lays out the job description that he wants the disciples to do. I believe that not only did Jesus left this job description for only the disciples but for us as well. Jesus wants us today even to make sure that we are still making disciples. My brothers and sisters as we continue this forty days of this Lenten journey of power and purpose, I challenge us to make sure that we are doing the work that Jesus left for us to do. I challenge us that we would being to reach beyond the four walls to make sure that we are reaching everyone. Yes, this challenge is going to cause some of us to come out of our comfort zone. This challenge might even cause us to break some traditions that we are accustom to but remember there is work to be done. In order for us to get this work done there some things might have to change, but however we get the work done we must make sure to have God the head of the work.
Prayer : God give us the power in order for us to make sure that we go to work to fulfill our purpose in life. Amen.

And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
John 20:30-31Gracious Lord; in the midst of it all today, I cling to you. In the struggles of the day, I look faithfully forward to the blessing you bring. Thank you Jesus, for your great truth! As I believe in you, I am given new life, renewed spirit, and strengthened faith. In the midst of it all today, I cling to you! Amen
Jesus is the Messiah! What more do you need to know today!? No perilous journey can stop this fact. No unmerciful sea can swallow this truth! During this Lenten season, as you draw closer to Jesus through sacrifice, fasting, and prayer, be reminded of the truth of our Lord and Savior! What place can you go where His name is unheard? What story can be told without his presence? Regardless of your struggles, sicknesses, issues, or pains, one immutable fact remains: Jesus Christ is Lord! You as a true believer have unlocked the key to an abundant life: by believing on the name of Jesus, you are promised life, and not just so, but also a blessed, purposeful life! The story of your life has many chapters thus far, and it is still being written. Your experiences are not just for you, they are pages that are meticulously designed by our Creator to embolden the faith of others! Christ has provided you with a wealth of life, love, and happiness! Jesus will provide untold blessings to you this season! So much so that not even the book of YOUR life will be able to contain it! This day, accept your life! Believe on the name of Jesus, and take hold of the purpose for your living! Each breath you take is for a reason, each challenge you face is authored for your strength, and every moment of your life is preeminently formulated! Today, take a deep breath, and remember that you are designed to live on purpose!

And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
Matthew 27:50We’ve all had our moments of suffering but none compare to the three hours of agony and darkness that Jesus went through while on the cross. It was during this time that Jesus asked what we all ask “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” We’ve all had our moments where we’ve asked “why me Lord.” We’ve all had our moments where our burdens have seemed too heavy and too much to bear. We’ve all had our moments where we’ve wanted to throw in the towel and walk away. We’ve faced more bills than what’s in the bank account and we cry out why me Lord. We’ve given our best but we still come up short and we cry out why me Lord. We receive an awful diagnosis and we cry out why me Lord. This passage reminds us that although we may taste some drops of bitterness through suffering, being put to the test, and going through, Jesus endured the greatest pain, anguish and affliction so our sins can be forgiven. During this Lent season we should be encouraged because God heard and delivered Jesus when He cried out and God will hear and deliver us also. Let us boldly declare “While on others thou art calling, do not pass me by.”

Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.”
John 2:19The Cosmopolitan Church of Prayer featuring the late Dr. Charles G. Hayes has a song, “God Said It”. The words of this song moves congregations by the power of God when it’s sung. Simple words, “God said it I believe it” stirs up the gift in the believer. My brothers and sisters there are no more bibles that will be written proclaiming the Son of God. Jesus is the Word, born and made flesh. After Jesus’ baptism, God showed up, declared Him as His son, and stated He was well pleased. He is the original and only Son of God. When God speaks, we should listen because He gave us His only begotten Son who bore the burden of our sin. God has given all authority to Jesus the Christ.
Jesus experienced everything humanity experienced and he still willingly laid down His life for us. Jesus was always about His Father’s business and refuse to allow unscrupulous acts to take place in the church. He confronted the moneychangers and kicked them out of His father’s house. He commanded the House to be a house of prayer. Believers, Jesus keeps His word and we can stand on His promises. He paid our ransom. He brought grace (unmerited favor) in the world. He did not leave us comfortless. He still intercedes on our behalf. My friends make time this Lenten Season to read and study the Word. Seek the scriptures about our wonderful, everlasting, Prince of Peace. Resolve to know Him and make Him known to a world that still needs a Savior. Only Jesus became poor so we might be rich. Only Jesus was crucified so we can live. Jesus keeps His word and its time that we learn from the love book He left behind for us. No one can live without a heart and no Christian can survive without the word! Incorporate daily prayer and meditate on the Lord’s Holy Word! Trust Him because Jesus keeps His Word.
“When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.”
John 18:6Today, we observe Maundy Thursday during this most holy week leading up to Easter Sunday. On this day, Jesus meet with his disciples in a room, shared a common meal with them (the initiation of our celebration of Holy Communion or Holy Eucharist), prepared the disciples for his betrayal, suffering, crucifixion and resurrection; and reassured the disciples of His continued presence in their lives through the ministry of the Holy Spirit within them. Around the table with the disciples, Jesus spoke words of power to them.
In the late evening at the Garden of Gethsemane, the temple guards with Judas Iscariot, accompanied by a large crowd with torches, came to arrest Jesus. As they sought to identify Jesus, he stepped forward and boldly proclaimed, “I am he.” He acknowledged that he was the one they were seeking. Jesus spoke authoritatively with words of power.
Jesus made a bold and powerful statement! He identified himself as the great I AM, the God who disclosed himself in a similar fashion to Moses at the burning bush. No wonder the soldiers and the crowd involuntarily stepped back and fell to the ground. In that confrontation, the overwhelming power and irresistible authority of Almighty God flashed through the words of Jesus. The only way that the soldiers could arrest him would be if he allowed them to do so. He offered himself to the temple guards which prevented his disciples from being harmed or arrested and fulfill the plan of God.
Jesus understood that his words possessed power. As we draw closer to the end of our Lenten journey, let us speak with the authority of Jesus with the Word of God, and fervent prayer in the darkness of our Gethsemane experiences of life.
Lord, help me to be courageous and bold when the evening shadows gather and opposing forces attack. Give me power through Your Spirit to overcome obstacles in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split,
Matthew 27:51It’s 12 P.M. and as our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is hanging on the cross after being whipped and beaten, darkness covers the earth for three hours. This intense suffering was for no wrong of His own but for the sins of the world. In pain and agony, at 3 P.M., Jesus cried with a loud voice His last of seven sayings on the cross, “My God, my God, why has Thou forsaken me?” It was at this moment that Jesus felt alone and abandoned. As Jesus bore our sins in His body on the cross, He was experiencing spiritual anguish from being separated from His Father because of the sins. I’m sure all of us have had moments where we felt like we were all alone, like everyone turned their back on us but those feelings of loneliness can’t compare to what my Lord and your Savior experienced as He paid the penalty for our sins. After Jesus uttered his final words, He cried with a loud voice and gave up the ghost. As soon as Jesus died, there was an earthquake, tombs were opened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two, signifying that the chains of bondage were now broken. The Holy Temple was central to Jewish worship and in the temple, there was a veil that separated the Holy of Holies, where God’s presence dwelt. The high priest was the only one who could go beyond the veil once a year to make atonement for the sins of the people. When the veil of the temple was torn, it affirmed that Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient for our sins. Jesus gave us access beyond the veil that we can go to the throne of grace boldly where we can obtain help and mercy in the time of need (Hebrews 4:16).
Prayer: Father, thank you for your Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. I pray that you help me to go beyond the veil daily with a deeper sense of appreciation for the sacrifice He made. In Jesus name. Amen.

And the women who had come with Him from Galilee followed after, and they observed the tomb and how His body was laid.
Luke 23:55
I am convinced that God does not disappoint those who are faithful. Despite the defeat that the followers of Christ must have felt on Good Friday they could not fully imagine what they would find on Easter Sunday. But in between lies Saturday, the Sabbath, which is the holy day for adherents of Judaism. It is not only a day of rest but also one of worship. Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus, wrapped him in linens and even gave up his burial spot so that Jesus could have a place to lay for the time being. The women also came to observe before they would prepare the body of the Lord for burial. Despite their disappointments, that was faithful followership. They were doing not only what the law required but what they knew the Lord deserved. The miracle of Easter belongs to those who are faithful despite what circumstances appear to be. Although in mourning, they showed up to honor the Lord on their holy day. And because of their faithfulness, according to Luke the women upon return would be the first to discover that God does not disappoint the faithful. They had one image of how they had left things but would return to find a different scene. Be faithful. Push through the dark days with your worship and adoration. Watch what God does to honor your faithfulness.
And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?”
Mark 16:3
Can you imagine the task of having to do something, and knowing there is a huge obstacle blocking your way? It’s even harder when you’re grieving, and you have absolutely no idea how you’re going to handle the task of caring for the loved one you lost. On top of having to watch their beloved Christ die on the cross just hours earlier, these ladies are now charged with the task of anointing the dead body of Jesus. On the way, they realize they have a big problem. They have the oils and spices, but they have no one to remove the stone to give them access to the grave.
These women are faced with an issue that they feel will keep them from carrying out the ministry assigned to their hands. How many times have we been given an assignment from God, yet we only see the things blocking us? These ladies had every reason to give up and turn back, because they didn’t have anyone to remove the stone. Instead, they went anyway. God knows what obstacles are ahead of us, and He wants us to go anyway. Your obstacles are God’s opportunities to show you His providence.
When these ladies get to the tomb, the stone has already been removed. Isn’t it amazing that on the way they were discussing who would remove the stone, yet when they arrived at the tomb they found that God had already handled the situation? God would have you and I to know that all we have to do is trust Him, and He will handle the stones in our lives. If it’s a financial stone, a health stone, an emotional stone, a sin stone, or any other stone, God is saying to us “Go.” You’ll find that by the time you reach your assignment, God has already removed your stone. Don’t fret over the Stone…..
