One of the goals of the Central Oregon coast Visitors Experience, which includes the Lippman Gallery located in the News-Times office building and this publication, is to be the most comprehensive and authentic conduit for visitors and locals alike to engage in the area’s cultural and natural resources.

Did you know Mo’s Chowder rose to fame as a result of its association with Paul Newman when he was in town filming Sometimes a Great Notion, with scenes shot on the Bayfront, in Kernville and in Toledo. The predilection of a certain U.S. president for the chowder didn’t hurt Mo’s popularity, either.

The black box theater at the Newport Performing Arts Center is named after David Ogden Stiers, who won Emmys for his role as Major Winchester on the 70s sitcom M*A*S*H and was a resident conductor for the Newport Symphony Orchestra until his death in 2018.

Those translucent, mostly featureless little globs on the beach? Those are salps, invertebrates that move by contracting and pumping water through their gelatinous bodies (“one of the most efficient examples of jet propulsion in the animal kingdom,” according to Wikipedia). That’s also how the salp feeds, filtering its meal of phytoplankton internally.

Want to see evidence from the last big tsunami to strike the Oregon coast, in 1700? Go to the beach near Neskowin, about 15 miles north of Lincoln City, when the tide is at a minus, and you’ll get a look at the stump remnants of giant Sitka spruce estimated to have been 2,000 years old when they died three centuries ago.

Our area of the PNW is a dynamic, wondrous and sometimes mysterious universe. We want to answer your questions, and we want it to be fun. BARNACLES — MORE THAN JUST CRUST ON THE ROCKS FROM THE OREGON COAST AQUARIUM | PHOTO BY JEREMY BURKE

If you’ve ever been to the beach, chances are you’ve seen a barnacle. Probably hundreds of them, in fact, sitting out at low tide, peppering the surroundings with grayish-white encrustations.

They’re everywhere, studding the rocks and driftwood and even the shells of other creatures. They are quite literally a fixture of the seashore — as sessile invertebrates, they are glued to the spot — and their steadfastness gives rise to some curious adaptations.

Barnacles are crustaceans, distant kin to crabs, shrimp and lobsters.

As arthropods, they have bodies split into segments—head, thorax, abdomen—but none of this is visible on an adult, intact barnacle.

Most of its anatomy is held within a ring of calcium-carbonate plates, roughly conical, that protect the animal from predators, the pounding surf and the dehydrating nature of the sun.

This is the part of a barnacle you’re most likely to see: its outer aegis, similar to the shells of crabs and other crustaceans. Inside this conical “shell” is a tiny creature perched, rather improbably, on its head.

Its back is oriented toward the bottom of the cone, and its limbs are pointed upward. What corresponds to the forehead of the barnacle is cemented to the rock. Its six limbs, called cirri, are long and feathered and are used to sieve plankton from the water, bringing it down to the mouth to be eaten. For this anatomical feature, the 1,220 species of barnacles worldwide are known collectively as Cirripedia, Latin for “curl-footed”.

The Pacific Northwest is home to 29 of those species, including what is perhaps the largest of them all: the giant acorn barnacle.

Growing to four inches or more in diameter—roughly the size of a softball — it lives in subtidal areas along the Pacific coast.

Incredibly, giant acorn barnacles possess some of the largest muscle fibers known to science, a fact that makes them ideal (and oftenstudied) subjects in investigations of muscular tissue.

These muscle fibers, known as myocetes, are actually some of the largest cells in the animal kingdom—an individual myocete from the giant acorn barnacle can measure 2 millimeters or more in diameter, about 25 times thicker than the average human hair. By contrast, myocetes found in the human heart have a diameter of 0.015-0.020 millimeters—almost 100 times thinner than the largest barnacle muscle fibers.

You can view the barnacle’s habitat and a vast sample of intertidal fauna and flora at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

The aquarium is located at 2820 SE Ferry Slip Road, south of the bridge in Newport. Tickets, which include admission to all exhibits, are $24.95 for adults, $19.95 for seniors and $14.95 for kids ages 3 to 12. Children 2 and younger enter free.

NEW WINE SHOP MAKING WAVES IN SEAL ROCK SUSAN SCHUYTEMA OF OC WEEKLY

A new wine bar and tasting room is open in Seal Rock, and the owner is hoping it helps bring more visitors to the small, coastal community.

Tiffany McEneny opened Wine + Waves about a month ago in her in-laws’ business, the Brian McEneny Woodcarving Gallery — one of the largest displays of refined chainsaw sculpture and tables on the Oregon coast. “We are a great complement to each other,” McEneny said. “It has a beautiful ambiance here, and you can have a winery experience.”

McEneny and her husband, Casey, a well-known artist and muralist, were both born and raised in Waldport, and they plan to keep the wood gallery in the family after his parents eventually retire. She and Casey pondered what they could bring to the table and decided his dream of teaching art classes and her opening the wine bar was a perfect fit.

After working in high-end restaurants and resorts for the past 24 years, McEneny knows a lot about wine. “I love going to wineries and getting to know the families and the people. It was always a perk of the job.

“I wanted to do something different. I love going wine tasting, and I didn’t see anywhere around here where you could do a wine flight and try some different, local wines,” explained McEneny. “For me, it was like,’ where would I want to go and hang out? What are some things I can take from all of the places I’ve been and create our own space? ‘So the big part of it was the tasting room. Bringing in wine that people can taste that you wouldn’t normally have an opportunity to try.”

McEneny was inspired to keep her concept local, so Wine + Waves only features Oregon wines. “I wanted to have really good wine at a great price. Higher range and lower range, but most of it is in the mid-range affordability in wines. And wines that you can’t just go to the store and buy,” she said.

Wine flights, wines by the glasses and bottles to drink in house or to go are available. McEneny encourages customers to walk around the gallery to view the beautiful art while sipping wine.

The tasting trays and wine pours will rotate every couple of weeks, so there will always be something new to sample. Going to wine country on her days off allows McEneny to taste different wines and decide what she will bring in her store.

Though Oregon is known for Pinot Noirs, she is in search of

The shop also features a selection of gifts, such as beach blankets and wooden bowls. McEneny is on the lookout for local artisans who have goods that might be a good fit in her business.

The wine bar inside the gallery has a few seats, and there is a patio in front with a large propane fire pit with additional seating. McEneny plans to add a wall and a roof to that area in the fall and possibly add more seating inside.

Currently, Wine + Waves offers elevated snacks such as nuts, olives, crackers and chocolate. The business does not have a restaurant license but it is something McEneny might consider down the road so she could offer cheese plates and charcuterie boards. For now, she encourages guests to order from the neighboring Good Mood Food, Luna Sea or the Chubby Mermaid. “We are just going to stay focused on the wine for now,” she said.

Wine + Waves is a casual spot that is both family and pet friendly. “It’s a place for everyone. We want to have people sit down and enjoy,” McEneny said. It’s open Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m., and Saturdays, from noon to 6 p.m. “I’d love to expand hours eventually,” she said. McEneny would also like to have live music, host pop-up tasting events and offer wine and art nights with her husband teaching art.

Wine + Waves is a work in progress, and McEneny expects it will evolve over time. “We are very excited to be in Seal Rock and want it to be a destination for people. People can make an afternoon trip out of it and enjoy the shops, art galleries, good food and beaches. Seal Rock is very special to us. We have a lot of pride being from here.”

GLIDING THROUGH THE SKIES ABOVE NEWPORT

If you’re walking near Nye Beach during a nice breezy day and see a shadow pass over you, don’t worry — it’s probably not a giant multicolored bird, just a paraglider soaring to and fro.

During warmer months, passersby can stop and watch in awe as men and women suspended in the sky by brightly colored sails that catch the wind zoom back and forth over Don & Ann Davis Park in Newport, a popular paragliding spot on the Oregon coast.

When the weather is nice and the wind is strong —but not too strong— paragliders from across Oregon and beyond stop by the elevated park overlooking Nye Beach or other local cliffside locales to take flight, putting on a show for locals and visitors alike.

Brian Jackson, a construction worker who was flying above the park in June, says Newport is a favorite location for him, and he knows many other paragliders from Eugene and elsewhere who often travel to Newport to fly.

“It’s just like floating on a cloud,” Jackson said. “I’ve been doing this for 11 years, and I’m also a tandem pilot who does this kind of thing all over the world. It’s a great stress reliever after a hard day of work.”

“I like it here because of the terrain and this town,” Jackson continued. “I love stopping to talk with people after I fly and the whole thing is a great icebreaker wherever I go. It’s really the best thing I’ve ever done and has really

changed my life.”

Jackson said he considers it a privilege to be able to paraglide in Newport without issue, and though there are many other spots on the Oregon coast, Newport is one of the best and easiest to access.

“We sometimes run into issues at places like Yaquina Head, where park rangers occasionally come and get on us because they say we’re disturbing the birds, which we try not to do,” Jackson said.

“We do our best to avoid and not chase the birds away, and sometimes they like to fly with us naturally. We often use them for information, and I imagine paragliding is the closest you can feel to being a bird.”

Jackson said watching gulls and other birds helps when he’s trying to gauge wind conditions and the intricacies of the terrain before he takes take flight.

Paragliders are considered “ultralight” vehicles and are subject to many of the same laws as drones and small aircraft, such as only operating during daylight hours and being aware of restricted areas.

There are also popular launch sites in Lincoln City, Tierra Del Mar Sandlake, Camp Lookout and Oceanside.

GO FLY A KITE Sunny spring and summer days on the central coast are often windy from cool northwesterlies — such as when this photograph was taken on a June afternoon at Nye Beach — and several Lincoln County businesses offer the original unmanned aerial vehicle for those who want to take advantage of the bluster for recreation. Downtown Newport hosts the Kite Company, located on Highway 101 in the Deco District, selling kites priced from just a few bucks to several hundred for stunt models. There’s also Winddriven, located on Highway 101 in north Lincoln City, and its sister-store Zephyrus in downtown Depoe Bay. Northwest Winds Kites & Toys is also located in Lincoln City, just south of the D River Bridge. Several non-specialty stores carry kites, including Hopscotch Toys at Salishan and Childish Tendencies on Newport’s Bayfront. The Newport Walmart and Fred Meyer stores typically have them in stock, as do other gift and toy shops throughout the county.

A RARE SIGHT: BONES OF THE BELLA

FLORENCE — Visitors to Florence’s South Jetty last month may have stumbled upon a rare site: the bones of a lost schooner, the Bella, which ran aground on the Oregon coast more than a century ago and whose frame is still visible from time to time when heavy rains erode the sand around it.

For a brief few days at the end of June, the frame of the Bella was exposed, possibly for the first time since 2007-2008. The ship is often referenced as one of the Oregon coast’s most notable shipwrecks, but few have the opportunity to see it.

There is a room dedicated to the Bella at the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum in Florence, which has preserved a considerable amount of information about the ship, its role in history and how it met its untimely end.

The Bella was once a three-masted, 121-foot by 32-foot by 6-foot, 180-ton schooner constructed north of Florence. It was used to transport lumber from Oregon mills to San Francisco and to bring supplies back to rural coastal towns that had no

road access. It could carry 100,000 feet of lumber, 5,000 cases of canned salmon and 250 barrels of salted salmon in a single trip.

The ship was owned by William Kyle, and historical records say it was the largest and fastest sailing ship ever built on the shores of the Siuslaw River, making its regular runs to southern California in only four days, while other ships often took five.

When it first left dock in 1897, it became stuck in the mud and had to be pulled free by another ship to begin its maiden voyage.

After a decade serving as a cargo ship, the Bella met her end in 1906 when rough winds blew the ship ashore at the end of a return trip.

(Courtesy photo) were too rough at the time to enter the river, forcing the crew to turn back. While heading back out to sea, the ship hit a calm and ran aground.

The waves continued to push the ship ashore and eventually ripped it in half.

The Bella’s crew was forced to wade through the surf to make it ashore, and most of her cargo and supplies were later salvaged, though much was ruined by water damage. The ship itself was declared a total loss and left to decay on the beach.

Most of the time there is no visible trace of the Bella, but occasionally winter storms erode the intertidal area a bit lower than normal, and its frame can be seen for a time before once again being swallowed by the sand. Prior to the ship’s brief reappearance in June, the last recorded instance of it being seen was 2008.

PADDLING DOWN THE SILTCOOS RIVER CANOE TRAIL South of Florence begins a peaceful three-mile kayak excursion paddling into the Siltcoos Lake, one of Oregon’s largest coastal lakes connected to the Pacific Ocean. The journey begins at the Siltcoos Lake Resort, 82855 Fir St. in Westlake, where a dock launches kayakers downstream of the Siltcoos River Canoe Trail. The scenic three-to-four-hour roundtrip takes people through Oregon’s popular dunes, rainforests, estuaries, the Pacific Ocean and back.

Siltcoos Lake Resort, which offers single and double kayak rentals, is a good place to launch vessels onto the Siltcoos River Canoe Trail.

Paddle right up and check out the Tyee Campground in the Siuslaw National Forest, about a half-mile south of the Westlake exit. On the right, it’s hard to miss the Lodgepole Picnic Area along the river, which is a popular spot to picnic out on. As kayakers continue downstream, a reflection of the trees mirror the water, making picturesque views.

From the dock, the canoe trail encompasses the sounds of birds singing, smells of hydrangeas in bloom and the taste of fresh air from the Sitka spruce trees during the summer months.

Between towering trees and wild berry bushes, people paddle through, connecting with nature in a leisurely exploration.

The river reaches around eight feet deep, and the water temperature is warm. Below, trout and bass swim by.

Before reaching the dam portage, which will signal an almost halfway point, paddlers will pass underneath the bridges on Highway 101 and will surge between canyons of sand, trees and pockets of wavy ivy.

For Gary Dimon, founder of the Siltcoos Lake Resort Yurt and Kayak Rentals, kayaking has brought him the freedom of the outdoors and days filled with tranquility.

“A part of the adventure is to have a big ocean route where you can navigate your way around and over into trees,” Dimon said.

Rafting and kayaking have been Dimon’s passions for nearly 40 years, and he wouldn’t have it any other way. It was about 20 years ago when he realized how much he adored the Siltcoos River and thought to himself, “Wow, I’d like it if my guests could come do this, too.”

“I had one dock, one kayak and a run-down motel,” he said.

Once kayakers are met with the dam, they’ll need to lift their equipment across the dam platform and cruise down an elevated track to scoot themselves back into the river. After this passage, paddlers will ride through the dunes, which will carry them into an estuary and further into a beach, which is a nesting area for endangered birds. This area is restricted snowy plover habitat for the period from March 15 through Sept. 15.

People can only exit when they get to wet sand.

Over the years, Dimon has remodeled the land into an Oregon coast getaway with a total of 30 bright kayaks with paddles, a yurt on the river, eight motel rooms and an RV park with 10 spaces, which are all frequently booked throughout the summer.

Dimon suggests packing a picnic or two and stopping to hang out, eat and enjoy company before turning around and heading back upstream. In addition, he recommends stopping by later in the afternoon to paddle down and catch the sunset and paddling back amidst the twilight hours.

Since then, he purchased a property in Westlake and transformed his kayaking goals into a reality.

Meanwhile, for those who plan on a day trip, single kayaks are available to rent, with life jackets and paddles included. Rates range between $45 and $65.

According to Dimon, kayakers often “kayak all day and come back at dark,” while others “fly down and fly back.”

The route is inclusive to both beginners and experts, or anyone

looking to kayak and paddleboard down the Siltcoos River.

After people rent a kayak from Siltcoos Lake Resort, a gravel road leads to a launching dock at the bottom of the hill. Life jackets must be worn.

For many years now, the panoramic views of the Siltcoos River, lake and ocean have attracted visitors from all over.

After paddling away from the drop-off, head straight as the river welcomes you to panoramic views with lily pads, growing conks on trees, kingfisher birds, dragonflies and an abundance of wildlife creatures.

SHOP AT THE DOCK RETURNS IN NEWPORT SUSAN SCHUYTEMA OF OC WEEKLY

Shop at the Dock is back this summer with opportunities for people to learn more about the local commercial fisheries on the Oregon coast.

The popular tours, organized by Oregon Sea Grant and Oregon State University Extension Service, give locals and visitors an in-depth look at the different types of fishing vessels, what they fish for and how they catch fish, sustainability efforts, and how they can buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen selling it off their boats.

Started as a community outreach program in 2014, Shop at the Dock has expanded the tour times to three slots each Friday instead of two, and an additional day was added this year. Tours are scheduled at 9:30, 10, and 10:30 a.m. every Friday through Aug. 19. The first tours of this season were held July15. The 90-minute tours begin on the sidewalk by Dock 5 at the Port of Newport. About 200 people participated last year.

OSU Extension marine fisheries specialist and coordinator of Newport’s Shop at the Dock Angee Doerr leads a tour of Newport’s commercial fishing docks. The tours run each Friday through Aug. 19 at 9:30, 10 and 10:30 a.m.

Angee Doerr, OSU Extension marine fisheries specialist and coordinator of Newport’s Shop at the Dock, said there were a few occurrences last year where they had to ask people to come back another week because the tours were full. “I was able to hire two additional tour guides, so we will be able to support an extra tour each week this year,” Doerr said. Currently, there is no plan to limit the tour sizes for COVID, but Doerr said they will keep an eye on case counts in Lincoln County and Oregon more broadly. Tours will be limited to 15 to 20 people for manageability and safety.

“It’s an opportunity for people to learn more about commercial fishing, which is huge in our culture, social systems and our economy,” Doerr said. “Much of what you’ll learn is not taught in regular classes.”

Participants will walk the docks and look at several fishing vessels to learn about the equipment used to bring in their catch and the methods they use to prevent bycatch. At the end of the tour, people will be able to identify fishing vessels that catch pink shrimp, salmon, tuna, Dungeness crab, Pacific whiting, halibut and the infamous hagfish.

“Hagfish are fascinating and one of my favorite fish to talk about,” Doerr said. “They are literally living fossils and date back 300 million years.” In 2017, a truck carrying live hagfish on Highway 101 near Depoe Bay lost a hagfish container that landed on a rental car, resulting in a slime explosion never before seen in the area. The massive cleanup required a snow plow to scrape the slime off the highway.

Hagfish, appropriately nicknamed slime eels, are jawless with four hearts and built like eels, but have no spines. Their leathery skin protects them from predators, but so does their ability to produce slime on demand. Doerr said scientists are studying the fish for new ways to use that slime. All the hagfish caught locally are exported to South Korea.

The tours are offered on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is no need to pre-register. However, anyone wanting to attend with a larger group should contact Doerr directly to make arrangements.

The event will be held rain or shine, so participants should plan ahead. Wear comfortable shoes with a good tread since the docks can be uneven and slippery, and arrive early to find

Albacore tuna will be in season during the tour time, and participants may also find salmon, rockfish, lingcod and possibly halibut for sale. If you plan on buying locally harvested seafood, bring cash — since most fishermen don’t accept cards — and a cooler with ice. Most fishermen will sell whole fish, though there may be someone nearby who can filet the fish.

Having a professional filet the fish yields more meat than an average person can get, according to Doerr, but expect to pay more per pound if the fish is filleted.

THE KITCHEN WILD PHOTOS AND RECIPES BY KATIE WILEY

GOOSENECK BARNACLES WITH HEAVY CREAM A while back, someone sent me an image of the strangest looking sea creature, asking if they were edible. And although they looked incredibly unappetizing, I made it my mission to find out what these alien-looking sea creatures were, and if they were, in fact, edible.

That alien-looking creature was none other than the gooseneck barnacle, and it is in fact edible!

Not only is this strange looking crustacean edible, but it is out-of-this world delicious. With its sweet, briny flavor similar to a clam, and how abundantly they’re available here on the Oregon coast, this bizarre looking sea creature just moved its way up to the top of my list for amazing coastal eats.

Gooseneck barnacles are filter-feeding crustaceans that attach themselves to hard surfaces of rocks and depend on water motion, rather than movement, for feeding on plankton. How they got their name is just as odd as the creature itself. It derived from the notion that these bizarre creatures are actually goose eggs. Unable to observe certain geese’s far-away breeding grounds, medieval naturalists in Europe believed that when goslings were ready to hatch, these barnacles would fall from their rocky perches, and fully formed goslings rose from the sea.

Gooseneck barnacles, although not related to geese, are actually members of the crustacean family, related to crabs and lobsters. They have been prized in Spain for centuries, fetching upward of $100 per pound. So they next time you’re out harvesting mussels here along the central Oregon coast, there’s a very good chance you’ll see these alien-looking creatures secured throughout the rocks as well.

But be sure to always know the rules and regulations when harvesting marine life. Currently, Oregon regulations limit wild harvest of these barnacles to 10 individuals of any size, which isn’t a whole lot but definitely just enough to sample with some of your closest friends.

If you are, in fact, brave enough to harvest these crustaceans, here’s, a quick step-by-step on how to clean and prep your barnacles and a recipe to follow that will surely impress your friends and family and add the title of adventurous eater to your resume.

Step one: Quickly blanch barnacles in salted boiling water for about 45 seconds.

Step two: Immediately remove from boiling water and submerge in an ice bath for up to 5 minutes, no longer. Drain barnacles.

Step three: Open the mouth of the gooseneck barnacle (that white, beak-looking shell at the end) and rinse thoroughly under water to ensure all sand is removed. Ensuring skin has separated from the meat, trim tough outer skin off of barnacle with kitchen scissors (get ready for a splash though because these guys release a lot of sea water when you remove the skin) as well as trimming off the head of the barnacle, which is not edible.

Step four: Slice into bite size pieces then enjoy! You can eat as is or serve with your favorite dipping sauce or broth. I used a variation of one of my favorite beer broths that I typically use for mussels, then topped them with fresh parsley and coarse sea salt, and they were absolutely incredible!

LEMON CREAM FRUIT TART A homemade flaky, buttery cookie crust baked in a tart pan and filled with lemon cream and topped with fresh fruit. The perfect spring and summertime dessert.

It’s so hard for me to make decisions on what to cook everyday, especially when it comes to making desserts. There are so many foods to make and not enough time in the day. If I had my way, I would be cooking and baking most of the day.

When making a fresh fruit tart, I love to use a large assortment of fruits.

Crust • 1/2 cup salted butter-room temp • 1/3 cup sugar • 1-1/8 cup unbleached flour (I use 1 cup of white Kamut Flour) • 2 tablespoons milk • 1-1/2 teaspoons almond extract Mix all ingredients in a food processor until it all comes together. Spray the tart pan with cooking spray with flour.

Roll out the dough, place the tart pan on the dough and use a knife to cut the dough around the pan 2 inches larger than the pan. Gently place the dough over the pan and press the dough in the pan lightly, press the dough up the sides of the entire pan with your fingers.

Bake on the middle rack at 400 degrees for 9-10 minutes, until light brown around the top. Let the pan cool completely.

Lemon Cream • 2 cups of heavy whipping cream • 8 ounce package softened cream cheese • 1 cup powered sugar • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice • 3 teaspoons lemon zest While the tart crust cools, make the cream filling. Using an electric hand-mixer, blend the cream cheese, powered sugar, almond extract and whipping cream until thick and creamy. Spread evenly in the tart crust, smooth the top.

Decorate the tart with any fresh fruit of choice.

Serve immediately or cover with plastic wrap and chill no longer than 5-6 hours. You can always prepare the crust ahead of time and cream mixture right before serving it.

WHAT YOU CAN FIND WASHED UP ON THE BEACH FROM THE OREGON COAST VISITORS ASSOCIATION

You can explore the ecology of the Oregon coast by simply taking a walk.

Twice a day, every day, the tides sweep in and out, carrying signs of marine life along with them. If you’re walking on the beach, don’t just watch the waves — check out the jetsam and flotsam that wash up on the beach. Some of it is mysterious, and some of it has an otherworldly beauty. If you’re lucky, here are a few of the finds you might encounter.

JELLIED CREATURES FROM THE DEEP Water or crystal jellyfish are not particularly remarkable if encountered on the shoreline, where they look like little more than a translucent water balloon, but suspended in the ocean, they have a parasol shape and their bioluminescence makes them glow like the moon. On the shore, they appear very similar to moon jellyfish, another translucent and often beached type that’s also frequently found on display at the Oregon Coast Aquarium.

Keep your distance, however, from big jellyfish with a reddishorange color. It might be a Pacific sea nettle, whose tentacles can sting humans.

Possibly the only jellyfish recognized by its Latin name, Velella velella, because it’s so fun to say, these tiny jellies sport an indigo-blue sail-like structure atop a flat base that is the source of their common name, by-the-wind sailors. They are typically only seen in early spring, when they wash up in masses on certain beaches, at the mercy of changing spring winds as they sail on the water’s surface.

One other invertebrate that you might not recognize as readily is sometimes called a sea pickle. Often the size of a finger, though they can grow to the size of a cucumber or larger, tube pyrosomes are bioluminescent, hollow tubes with a Jello-like texture. Though they grow most readily in more tropical waters, storms and other ocean disturbances occasionally carry these organisms to Oregon’s coast, sometimes in large numbers.

CASTOFFS AND CASTAWAYS Find one of these leathery pods with their horny ends and you’ll understand why skate egg cases are sometimes called mermaid purses. They are in fact designed to hold something, but it’s not lipstick. They’re the protective coating for the eggs of skates (also called rays) which flourish in Oregon’s waters

and can grow as large as 8 feet across from wingtip to wingtip.

Find what looks like a rock riddled with lots of little crisscrossing holes? It may look like coral, but it was once home to a colony of worms. These worms don’t tunnel but rather extract calcium from the seawater and use that to create a shelter. As the colonies grow, pressure from surf can break pieces apart, which then wash up on shore as false brain coral.

PLANTS OF THE SEA It might look like soap suds, but seeing fluffy clouds of seafoam along Oregon’s shoreline is no cause for alarm. The frothy tumbles are made from a suspension of air, saltwater, and proteins from algae, seaweeds and phytoplankton — microscopic plants — kicked up by the surf. A foundational food source for many small creatures, seafoam indicates the phytoplankton populations in the water are healthy and robust.

Bull kelp forests of massive, dark-brown seaweed grow along the Oregon Coast and are a foundational part of Oregon’s healthy marine ecosystems. It bears a tubular, hollow stalk topped with an orb-shaped bulb and a cluster of leaf-shaped fronds. Each winter you find mature specimens — often 10 or more feet long — broken free from their holdfasts on the rocky ocean bottom, tangled up in giant piles on the beach.

Also look for winged kelp, or wakame — a long, spear-shaped seaweed with a central stalk — and the purplish-brown, almost plasticky handfuls of porphyra, better known as purple laver or nori. It often is found with sea lettuce, which is similar in

size and texture but a brilliant emerald green. Did you know all of the seaweeds listed here are edible? Always make sure that anything picked for personal consumption is from clean water, and check ODFW’s regulations for when and where it’s legal to harvest before you go.

OTHER ODDITIES Also called whale burps (though they’ve got nothing to do with whales), beach balls are round tufts of tangled seagrass, snail egg cases, seaweed, and manmade materials such as fishing line that tangle together in the surf. They resemble balls of yarn and can be as small as an inch and as large as a foot in diameter.

Count yourself lucky if you find a hollow blue, green or gray glass float on the Oregon Coast. These highly collectible orbs were once used as floats for fishing nets. Nowadays, you’re more likely to encounter intentionally placed glass floats made by local glassblowing artists in Lincoln City and Gold Beach — and at antique shops up and down the Coast.

IF YOU GO • While it’s fine to handle most beachcombing finds, it’s recommended to “leave no trace” by minimizing the taking of souvenirs.

• Before you set out, you’ll want to check the weather report and the tide tables for great low-tide beachcombing.

• Never turn your back on the ocean, watch for swells and observe beach safety.

• Dress in layers and don’t forget sun protection.

• Take along a bag to collect any litter you see on the beach.

HIKING THE OREGON COAST TRAIL, 400 MILES FROM THE COLUMBIA RIVER TO CALIFORNIA A 2021 GUIDE BY BONNIE HENDERSON, PUBLISHED BY MOUNTAINEERS BOOKS

Bonnie Henderson writes in her guide to overnight hiking on the Oregon Coast Trail that the tome is not necessary to traverse the 400-mile route — but it will greatly increase your enjoyment.

Filled with tips on how to camp stealthily, find services like bathrooms and running water, access public transit to skip laborious segments and take boat shuttles across bays to avoid Highway 101 as much as possible, Henderson’s guidebook, the first of its kind other than self-published works, promises to do just that. Previous guides, including one

by Henderson, detail day hikes, but none provide a comprehensive picture of daythrough-night travel of the entire trail by foot, including places to lay your head.

About half the approximately 400-mile Oregon Coast Trail is on the beach itself, Henderson writes, while another quarter follows footpaths over headlands. The remainder follows side roads and, in some places, the Coast Highway.

“It’s also still evolving,” Henderson writes in her introduction. “Where steep seaside cliffs or private property have created gaps in the trail, you will have to hike along the highway shoulder for a mile, maybe even several miles … You must be prepared to hike some long days and, sometimes, stealth camp or grab a motel room in sections where legal campsites are few and far between.”

Henderson’s book breaks down the trail into five sections, which are further broken down into legs of about 12 miles each, for which she provides updates on her website, hikingtheoct.com, to help hikers contend with those evolving conditions.

In a May 27 update (her last while completed an adventure of her own in July, she wrote), she advised hikers at Fishing Rock-Fogarty Creek to cross off instructions on two pages of the book and replace it with following: “After leaving the beach at Fishing Rock, turn right on Fogarty Avenue and follow it south to US 101. Then walk the highway

shoulder just 0.1 mile and veer right into a wide gravel path down to the beach. Wade the creek if you want, otherwise go left on the paved path along the creek a short distance to a footbridge (at the park restrooms), cross the bridge, and take another paved path on the south bank east to stone stairs leading up the hill to where the OCT continues south.”

Hikers to Cape Perpetua were advised of a change in camping conditions: “Campground host says there is no longer a hiker-biker site at the campground here, bummer. You can camp, but it’s no longer drop-in and costs more.”

In combination with the website, the guidebook is truly an unparalleled resource for up-to-date information on hiking the trail.

Henderson includes mileage charts between waypoints and elevation charts for each leg, as well as photographs, maps, suggested itineraries, hazards, resupply points and contacts for overnight stays.

She describes the central coast portion as the “most civilized” on the trail — “close to US 101 most of the way, though the ocean’s roar tends to mask any traffic noise. On beach sections, you’ll frequently be walking past oceanfront homes, and you’ll be ducking in and out of towns — and recommends a four to six-day hike from Gleneden to Cape Perpetua, suggesting: “DAY 1: Gleneden Beach to Beverly Beach State Park. Break up this stretch with a night at a motel in Depoe Bay. DAY 2: Beverly Beach to South Beach State Park south of Newport.

DAY 3: South Beach to Beachside State Park. Break up this stretch with a vacation rental along the route or a motel night in Waldport.

DAY 4: Beachside to Cape Perpetua Scenic Area visitors center. Break up this day with a motel in Yachats, or just end in Yachats.”

Headland summits along the route include Otter Crest, at 480 feet; Yaquina Head, at

160 feet; and Cape Perpetua, at 960 feet.
