Now is the perfect time to start your list for spring clean-up! Check out the following tips from professional builders to start you on your way. If any of these projects are more than you can (or want) to handle, find a local professional in the Homeowner’s Resources on page 46.
Tip #1 Check the smoke alarm
and carbon-monoxide detector and replace batteries where necessary. Replace smoke detectors that are more than 10 years old, as newer models have longer battery life and hush features.
Tip #2 Clean out your fireplace.
Vacuum your fireplace to remove ash after your last fire. Ash can be sprinkled on the compost heap or placed in the garbage. Make sure the ashes are cold and there are no burning embers. While you’re at it, get your chimney inspected.
Tip #3 Go through the house
and unplug unnecessary extension cords and store space heaters and other small appliances that go unused during the spring and summer.
Tip #4 Inspect your roof and
clean gutters and downspouts. Wash them to get rid of grime and dirt. Check corner seams for evidence of leakage and replace fascia if it shows signs of damage. You wouldn’t believe how quickly this beautifies your home!
Tip #5 Look over your siding
for dirt and rotting pieces. Replace rotten pieces and use soap and water to clean the siding (Note: use caution when using a power washer on painted sidings as it could damage the paint).
